With all the issues people are having with ambush tipping culture, maybe there is a way we can solve this. It is no longer 15% for acceptable but not bad service, 20% for exemplary service or if the tip worker has a juicy pair of melons. It seems like 20% is the minimum up to 35%.

At 35% it has become obvious they have adopted a pimp – ho style business model. My proposal is to do something that will terrify a fair number of you: Get to know your local merchant of ———-. Know him well enough to open a tab. If you fail to close your tab at the end of the month is he still going to charge you a 20% gratuity for doing the honorable thing instead of taking your CC information and spending thousands of dollars on merchandise from his favorite OnlyFans account in the Philippines? Yes, but at least you won’t have to pay his ho up front which means to tip is required. When she asks you to pay for her middling service just, “put it on my tab.” and let her pimp sort it out.
Okay that’s not going to work at all.

Does she count?
She has fallen out of favor with Trump lately. But not out of my favor.
Pretty sure Trump has access to a better pair of melons without leaving the White House.
I’ll allow it

Federal agents intercepted three gun-runners just south of the U.S. border, resulting in the seizure of an arsenal of high-powered weapons hidden in two tractor-trailers that had crossed into Mexico from Texas.
They have the shoulder thing that goes up?

I ordered gun parts on the internet today.
I wonder if the ATF will arrive in 11-14 days?
I ordered a bunch, but I’m already on NJ’s list after requesting a pistol permission slips.
Not for nothing, but it was a nosy UPS driver that dropped the dime that led to the Waco siege.
I *know* UPS hated me back when I was still buying crates.
My ups driver neighbor changed routes and no longer does his own neighborhood.
Don’t know the new guy yet.
I *know* UPS hated me back when I was still buying crates.
Back when I was doing that, the UPS guy and I started chatting about guns.
Did I ever tell the story of when UPS wanted to try alternate delivery methods and I drove a little tricycle with a trailer all over Shreveport?

No… do tell.
That sounds like some sort of Meter Maid deal RJ.
And herein lies the difference between “open international markets” and “free trade,” roughly approximating the difference between “capitalism” and “the free market” domestically.

That’s a fairly unimpressive junk-on-the-bunk layout, all things considered. Way too many cheap hunting rifles and shotguns for a really high-level arms trafficker.

Tosses limburger in Jimbo bunk. It’s gotta smell better than the Fromunda cheese that is already in there.
Nick:
You think that I have to stick to just Swiss cheese (because it is holey) because I’m the Pope?
Also this limburger cheese really stinks (both literally and figuratively)! I swear it is the worse lube I’ve ever tried in my bunk.
Gouda’s Swiss not narrow his gaze at all these puns?

I mean, if we’re going to do imperialism, I kind of like to see us doing it out in the open and actually at least attempting to obtain some benefit from it. It at least makes sense, in comparison to our prior policy of altruistic imperialism where we just do the killing and destabilizing and neither expect nor receive any reward. But is non-imperialism ever making a reappearance on the menu?
It will probably greatly enrich, well… some Venezuelan(s) or other too.
In the ’80s when I was kicking it with Uncle Sam’s Misguided Children, I advocated for the military being self-funded. No more paychecks from Uncle Sam.
Instead we’d invade Korea/Japan for cars, China for phones and PC’s. Obviously, we’d invade the Philippines for the girls (of course, we’d hit up Thailand too so the Navy could have their lady boys).
Keep costs down and the military would be constantly honing their fighting skills.
If it was good enough for Alexander, it should be good enough for us too.
That was fun. Ran a few errands, including an attempt to stop at a specific place of business. The road is all torn up and i was unable to figure out how to get across. Typical.
Got my monthly checks mailed, anyway. And beer.
Only $16,750 for a replica Lamborghini.

TOO LOCAL NEWS: The usual suspects are mad
The suit was filed in Merrimack County Superior Court Monday by Kelly Wieser of Campton and David Bates of Warner, and seeks an emergency injunction to block Secretary of State David Scanlan from putting the question on general election ballots.
“I’m a former school budget committee member and a paralegal, but with all that experience the proposed ballot measure is still unclear,” said Bates. “I’m unsure what it would mean for my children, I’m unsure what it would mean for hundreds of kids in my district, and I’m unsure precisely what it would do for taxpayers.”
“As a New Hampshire native who attended the same elementary school as my children, I take pride in representing my town on our school board, where we have established processes for determining what is best for our community,” said Wieser. “I know how carefully we allocate every single dollar we budget to benefit our children’s education. It is inevitable, as laid out in this filing, that if this ballot question passed, we would have no choice but to consider budget cuts that would have the potential to impact classroom instruction and other school-based services.”
Why do I think that the thing that sticks in their craw is the cap on administrative budget increases? They could care less about the dummies who want to teach the kids.
The real VIP’s are the teachers who got that Masters degree and then joined the administration. They are the smart ones who don’t have to put up with snot nosed kids anymore. I’d bet that 90% of teachers wish for a job in the admin side of the school district.
+1 Teacher Sob Story about having to buy their own classroom supplies because of budget limits.
I got into it at a Parent/Teacher conference with one of the Altar Kids’ teachers about an upcoming referendum. She tried to tell me about how much she had to shell out for classroom supplies.
I told her that she should be griefing with the school board (and her union) about the budget. If they aren’t allocating money correctly, that should be fixed. The solution isn’t to just get more money.
Mrs. Holiness stopped inviting me to Parent/Teacher conferences shortly after that.
Dub.
Also, teachers can deduct up to $300 spent on classroom supplies from their taxes each year ($600 if filing jointly and both are teachers).
Pat:
I also got into fights with their elementary teachers about New Math. New Math tried to make math fun and intuitive. Instead of learning the basics by rote, there was a lot of questions about what happens when you add three apples to 2 apples. The answer wasn’t 5. It was a picture of 5 apples.
The conversation would go something like this:
Teacher: The Altar Kid is already scoring at a 10th grade level in math. However, they have problems showing their work. They don’t draw the picture of 5 apples, they just write 5.
Me: This New Math is stupid
Teacher: The district thinks it is the bestest most scientific way to teach math.
Me: Kids need to be able to do simple addition, subtraction, multiplication and division in their heads instantly. The only way to do that is by repetition. They need those work sheets with 100 questions on them and they need to them constantly.
Teacher: That isn’t how we do that. When they get to 6th grade they will start using just numbers, but until then we think that this approach is best.
Me: You know why my kid is maxxing out? Because we make them do work sheets at home as well as flash cards.
Teacher: *scribbles note to remind her to call Child Protective Services*
Homeschooling for the win.
Wish I could get half my state, property, and sales taxes back.
Where’s the provision where the school board members and district administrators are personally liable for costs cause by deferred maintenance?
Why 6%? That is far too generous.
Where are the penalties for teachers and schools whose students can’t read, write, or perform arithmatic?
I saw somewhere a theory that 60 years ago, teaching was one of the few professions that was open to women, so a lot of bright ambitious gals went into it.
As feminism opened more doors for women, a lot of them went into more rewarding careers in other industries. That meant that teaching was only getting Education Majors to enter it.
This has led to the deteriorating outcomes.
School districts force you to get an Ed major to teach rather than having any actual skills.
Threedoor:
I remember when the Soviets collapsed and there were a lot of guys leaving the military, the was some thought about letting the ex-GI’s teach without a college Ed degree.
The thinking was that a lot of your time in the military is spent training others. So it wouldn’t be a huge stretch for them to pick up teaching kids.
Luckily the teachers union was around to spike that stupid idea. Think of the disaster it would have been to have teachers sloshing with toxic masculinity instructing our kids!
Where’s the provision where the school board members and district administrators are personally liable for costs cause by deferred maintenance?
I suspect this is already going on in some areas in order to pump up capital expenditures.
Why 6%? That is far too generous.
I attended an information session held by two state representatives who were involved in passing the property tax cap legislation. They picked the 6% cap because it well below the average percentage for administration costs. If I remember correctly, the average NH school district administration cost is about 20% of the district’s budget.
Where are the penalties for teachers and schools whose students can’t read, write, or perform arithmatic?
NH has state wide standardized testing. As far as I know, the scores are not a factor in the per-pupil state aid to local schools.
There is a case before the NH Supreme Court where the state government has asked the Court to overturn the Claremont and related decisions. The entire state mechanism for payments to local schools is based on those decisions. I haven’t dug into all the cases, but I suspect if overturned the state could add test scores to the state aid formula. Next time I talk to friendly state representatives, I’ll ask about test scores and state aid.
I’ve looked into the troops to teachers program.
It’s a hot mess and would still be the same bottom 10% teaching.
Separate school from state.
The end.

Tipping got out of control when the lockdowns ended. Everyone was so happy to be able to go back to the bars and restaurants that they over tipped. Worse than sailors from the Abe Lincoln in Thailand on shore leave.
Like all windfalls, too many people thought it would go on forever. The servers didn’t realize that the huge tips were a one time thing. Or should have been.
The other factor that came into play were the new tip screens that started showing up everywhere. Instead of being allowed to tip what they felt like, those set amounts of tips forced too many people to tip more than they wanted. Personally, I didn’t tip anything if the minimum “suggested” tip was greater than 15%. Felt a bit guilty, but the only way it will stop is if enough people stop playing along with it.
Tipping is also one of the biggest sore points my Asian relatives have with America.
They always bend my ear about how dumb we are to put up with it. They point out that there is no tipping in Japan or Korea and service is excellent. I have to agree with them. I also try to explain to them that if you want to get decent bar service, you better tip.
Or, go some place full of FOB Japanese and Koreans.
Forward Operating Bases have a different tipping culture?
Tip with pogs at the FOB.
But that fad ended when I was in middle school! I’m not sure I could find any.

F***ing Oregon Bastards.
I’ve simply learned to avoid establishments who did that.
Tipping went out of control during lockdown.
Seinfeld covered this 30 years ago:
I still sometimes feel guilted into tipping a person who twists a couple knobs and puts a cup in my face. I have to stop – it’s bullshit. And you know those people are getting regular wages, not the server wage. I know because I used to work counter seats at a restaurant and I got a little more than MW plus some meager tips.
TL;DR – if you’re not actually a server, you’re not getting a tip. And that video – holy shit. Restaurants expect me to pay their staff’s wages too? Go fuck yourselves.
Where I get lost is am I supposed to tip barbers? Fortunately I cut my own hair.
Or movers? I did just tip movers. They are already expensive but I think it has long been the custom here.
Or hotel staff? I stopped tipping the maids when I heard they’re already being paid well above the American average.
I tip at the coffee shop (I only get a simple black coffee) because I plan on taking up a seat and using their wifi for a while.
The traditional barber I used to go to, I never tipped. He owned his shop and had a sign that said no tipping. The chain barbers I go to now, I tip because everyone else does. I should find an old school barber again.
I’ve never tipped a hotel maid. I’ve tipped the porter for running various errands (it is also a good way to get a late checkout).
My understanding is yes, although I’ve only been getting cutting haircuts for about the last year and a half, having previously buzzed my head at home since age 9. My guy charges $40 and I always give him $50, cash (if I’m tipping, I always try to do so in cash so the recipient has the option of declaring it or not). He’s a good dude, knows my gourd, and gives you the old school “Let’s sit around and shoot the shit” experience.
I’ve never hired movers as an adult. My dad tipped the crew that moved us to our new place in 2001, and they deserved every penny they got. Between my dad’s nearing-disorder hoarding and the painting equipment we stored for his business, they did a lot of heavy lifting and got everything done incredibly quickly. If I was paying somebody to move the minimal amount of shit I have now? I don’t know. If it was a local yokel I might slip him some extra cash at the end of the day. If it’s a bigger moving company, probably not.
When I moved here to Texas and needed an immediate local job to get my bills in order, a couple of the national hotel chains with branches off the interstate were hiring. Maids were getting paid more than front desk. That said, Whataburger, Wendy’s and Walmart were all hiring at the same time and paid more than either job.
“And that video – holy shit.”
My takeaway from the video is that somehow the absolute bare minimum tip rate was unilaterally bumped up to 25 percent when no one was looking.
I still see the 15% option on kiosks.
That guy is a lot more generous than I am. I rarely tip more than 20% and not for fucking coffee ever again.
One more: taxis, Uber
I always tip but… really? Why? My last trip the guy helped me with luggage and that is worth a tip but just driving from one place to another? That should not expect a tip.
The Navy isn’t returning to Bahraini base soon
The Navy’s highest-ranking officer told sailors during a town hall on Monday that it would be a while before the service would return to its main logistics hub in the Middle East after it was heavily damaged early in the Iran war.
Answering a displaced service member’s question about retrieving personal goods from the base they previously called home, Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Daryl Caudle said the Navy would not be using Naval Support Activity Bahrain for the foreseeable future.
“We’re not getting back in there anytime soon,” Caudle said. “I just want to be completely honest with that.”
On Feb. 28, Iran struck NSA Bahrain with missiles and one-way attack drones after the U.S. and Israeli militaries launched strikes on the Islamic Republic.
The Pentagon initially reported zero fatalities and said the strikes did not significantly impact military operations.
Several months later, however, the true impacts of the strike are coming into focus.
For home service I gift a quart of honey. For example, the roto rooter guy came out the following day after I called him. On time, a 45 minute drive, did the work, cleaned up the mess, and was $75 cheaper than the previous guy.
The regular UPS guy comes a couple times a month, put packages inside the screen door when I’m not around. Friendly, a quart of honey at Xmas time.
Answer to Jimbo’s tip remarks above.
I saw a Lamborghini on the street in Singapore on one trip. I asked a local why anyone would own one on an island only 30 miles long.
They said the rich dudes cross the bridge into Malaysia and go driving in the mountains, then come home.
The only time I’ve ever seen a Lamborghini in the flesh was in a New Hampshire Wal-Mart parking lot.
Saw quite a few of them in Las Vegas, but that’s to be expected.
I’ve been to Vegas a few times and never seen a Lamborghini there. I’ve seen other fancy cars, but interestingly never a Lamborghini.

Progressive Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) quipped Monday that a company should build an AI data center near President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort, after he said communities will be “backwards and poor” if they oppose the construction of such facilities.
“How about we put one in Mar-a-Lago? I love that. Let’s put a data center up in Mar-a-Lago, we’ll see how backwards and poor he is in response to that,” Ocasio-Cortez told MeidasTouch’s Pablo Manríquez on Capitol Hill.
The president said Monday that communities pushing back on AI data centers will face negative economic consequences, saying the “only reason” they would not want the facilities “is if they want to end up being backwards and poor.”
That’ll show those guys.

Speaking of troubling educational news…
Our schools are hemorrhaging illegal aliens!!!! All because those monsters from ICE showed up and terrorized our vibrant new neighbors.
It isn’t just the per pupil spending that these poor schools are losing out on. Think of all the specialists like Jose who get a cushy job to talk Spanish to the illegals. (Multiply that for the Somalis, the Ukranians, the Haitians, etc.). I’m sure that there are also multiple jobs in the school administration building that are 100% simply tracking the money spent on these kids.
* BTW, “English learners” is a newspeak term I hadn’t heard before. It took me a while to figure out that an English Learner is a kid who can’t speak English.
I hear only good news.
Now the overstaffed department can focus on educational attainment of students, cut useless jobs, reduce spending, and all around improve performance.
Why not celebrate?
Yeah, that took the place of ESL like 20 years ago.
I thought ESL was newspeak at the time.
“English Learner is a kid who can’t speak English”
Isn’t it rather colonialist and white-centric to make them learn English?
And if you don’t, they’ll claim you want to bar them from participating in the economy.
Speaking of… I’m a language nerd and yet I am 100% opposed to the “bilingual” fraud that schools have been perpetrating for decades. It is do-gooders pushing multi-culti nonsense and is more harmful to students than just throwing them into English.
to wit: When I lived in Germany, nobody wasted time trying to teach me math or physics in English. All my classes were in German and guess what, I learned a lot of German that way.
“…[Teacher] says 10 to 15 of his students never came back. Some moved to another state or city to be with family, including an 11-year-old who had to move to Missouri to stay with his sister after both his parents were detained at work. ”
See, pal. Okay. If you’ve got enough family in this country, for long enough that members maintain multiple residences in multiple states, let alone city/county, um. Your inability to ‘find’ them speaks to the problem you’ve been enabling. You go jail, now. Tell me everyone up the ladder who worked to make this happen, and depending how high ya can snitch, ya get nicer apple slices at lunch.
(Me, as God-King? I’d highly incentize snitching upward. Speed is of essence now. I won’t be denied THIS essence, other than those other times, which. Ev, stop.)
“Chain migration”. One gets in and their entire family up and down gets to move to the head of the line.
They’re tipping their hand here. More kids means stretched resources and more students per teacher. This should be a good thing, but it’s costing union people their jobs, which is apparently the most important thing.
Except more students per teacher triggers union demands for “smaller class sizes” and therefore more teachers – and what teachers unions demand, teachers unions get.

Home schooling booming in immigrant homes!
Parents salute ICE for getting better learning facilities for their youngsters,
Schools typically get extra cash per ESL student in the district. If they disenrol they lose the cash. If they stay on the rolls and don’t show up they get the cash.
We’re not 100% sure about our district but we believe that if we enrolled our boy then home schooled him the district would get to count him as we have not moved out of the district.
They should not get paid for services not rendered. Chargeback for all students not fully educated, regardless of attendence. Refund to the taxpayers.
Reminds me of The Wire when the school district has a “janitorial” position on the books that consists of going out on the street and bringing in the truants for their once a month appearance in class to maintain their attendance and keep the student numbers and funding.
I wonder if they offer HTML as a second language for people who can’t properly close their tags.
I learned HTML on eBay.
I tried HTML between 1997 and the MySpace era.
Any second language is a no for me.
My son was listed as ESL because I checked a box saying we speak a different language at home, which we do. I figured it would look good on his permanent record when it came time to apply for college. It took my wife a lot of effort to get him delisted because the school didn’t want to lose the money.

Carney said any deal with the U.S. “must” recognize Canadian sovereignty, which includes respecting the French language and Quebec culture.
“When the Americans stop doing memes, stop throwing shade, stop trying to be tough and start being serious about having those discussions — we can have those discussions,” Carney said to reporters on Tuesday.
“But look, it’s not constructive, but that’s their democracy,” he added.
When will America elect a serious mature statesman willing to give us everything we want?
I’d consider it a national security issue if my president announced to reporters that he’s been getting worn down by memes in international trade negotiations.
This is what I think of the Canadian government.

Interview went really well. (I do record things and feed them to AI later. Before that, the habit was born from newspaper-ing.) I hit all the right notes. I’m upset with myself for not pushing my long-term interest in growth there harder, but I hope I didn’t do too poorly with it. So I’ve got an email reply which opened up interesting new realities about how the world apparently works, these days.
So a recruiter, Alexandra, set me up with the interview with Abigail, who’s in Cox’ “Talent Acquisition” realm. I don’t have contact info for Abigail or the other two. (I really shoulda remembered to ask for that today, too. Meh.) According to Gemini: this is now standard corporate recruiting. So I write to the recruiter and they send it to the interviewers, and THEN it gets attached to my file along with resume, cover letter, etc. My thank you note is part of the daily hand-off routine, it apparently guarantees it reaches all of them and gets “permanently tied to your application.”
Huh. Life with 8+ billion interconnected folk is goofy. I easily see how young folk just maaay be getting fucked from how impersonal the world is. That empty ‘LOOK AT ME!’ impulse directly leads to non-binary trans duck-fucking, right there.
That was my experience getting hired at my current job and interviewing for a half dozen others over the last 3 years. Third party recruitment agency places the job ads. Resume goes through ML-based ATS. The ones with the right combination of keywords might get looked at by an actual human. They follow up with a pre-screener to see if you’re legit and capable of punctuality, then hand you off to the company’s internal HR people for the interview portion. If they didn’t like you, you only hear back from the recruiter (if at all).
It’s definitely impersonal, and definitely means that companies are missing out on potentially good candidates that may not fit the exact dataset. The solution is to maintain a gigantic network of online and offline business contacts, but not everybody is really equipped for that (myself included).
I am SOOOO glad the company that hired (really, acquired) me in 2014 and canned me in 2018 hired me back in 2020.
I was just getting into the swing of looking for a real job again and hoo boy it’s less pleasant than ever.

Happy Birthday
Mazel tov! Don’t leave us in suspense, did the hazardous waste incinerator pass the test?
Today was just a relative accuracy test for gas flow and 2 units passed.
Tomorrow is flow, O2/CO2, SO2, NOx, and CO. A bit more comprehensive.

Good to know that a man of your age can be testing serious equipment. You’ll be in great shape when you decide to retire.
For today though, have your cake and eat it too.

Congrats on the birthday! Does the exhaust stack count as a candle? You deserve better.

They did! Mar 1, 2027!
I’ll be there, if I don’t fourget. Actually, they remind me (and probably everyone) about 3 days in advance.

I’m about half way though though a 400 page bio “Patrick Henry, Champion of Liberty” by Jon Kukla . A good lead up with the break down of the British efforts to rule the colonies from a far. The Revolutionary War is just starting at this point, early 1775. A lot of familiar names appearing, from the Declaration of Independence (which I haven’t got to, just yet) and the early days of agitation.
Trying to picture us today going through what our early forefathers did is hard to imagine. The willingness but sometimes reluctance to put their fortunes and lives on the line, for the dreams of political/personal freedom is hard to understand, when today an internet joke can get one’s ass hauled off to jail.
I’ll send it on to anyone with an interest.
I finished a 400 page bio of “Doc Holliday”, from his ancestral home in Georgia to his adventures in the gambling halls of the unsettled West, his ties to Wyatt Earp and family and of course the OK Corral affair. Many of us have seen at least one movie that purports to be an accurate portrayal of the shoot out. The author uses a lot of “may haves”, “could haves”,and “it’s possibles” that leave open the question of total validity. In any case it’s an interesting Old West story that is entertaining and we can live in the mining camps and frontier towns vicariously.
The book has moved on to a new home however
