Had a great weekend for sportsball. This was the first tournament of the year for both my daughter and youngest son. My daughter’s soccer team had an easy win Friday night and a bit more trouble in the two games the following day but squeaked out a win for both. They got into the championship game where the difference was one play my daughter had a small opening on a breakaway play from the corner and got it to a teammate in front of the goal resulting in an offsides call. Unfortunately, the game went into PK and while she got her point, the team lost.
My son’s games were more entertaining. He didn’t have a great weekend from the plate. Being a 12 year old playing 13u is great for his development as a player and elsewhere but has one drawback that begins this year: they are required to use a -8 bat. He previously used -10 and is still adjusting to the new bat. He gets just under the pitch and what was once a bloop single turns into an infield fly. We’ve been hitting the gym so I don’t anticipate this continuing to be an issue for long. He still finished the weekend batting last with 3 hits, 2 RBI, and I lost count of stolen bases. Where he stood out though was he was the starting pitcher in game 2. He wasn’t striking them out, but he was getting soft contact with a solid defense behind him. He left in the third inning up 4-2 and they won 9-3. The team got into the championship round, but that’s the third game in one day and one team just piles on an exhausted team. 20-3 loss but we ate tacos afterward so its all good.

I’m sure I could find out how many millions this is going to cost the taxpayers. I know what my fraction should be based upon basic math. Strangely, it doesn’t feel like a lot. I realize there was a point when I’d be overjoyed at the number in question, but somewhere along the line my perspective changed. I think it was when I got out of debt and could cover my expenses without getting stressed out. My personal rational action from an economic stnadpoint is to pocket the money and try to build up a buffer to retire under the assumption that the defined benefit fund will be looted by then.

Facial recognition at a casino IDs a guy as someone who has been trespassed, so they handcuff him and call police.
His ID says he is a different person.
But the guys in the office and the cop trust the face ID software.
So his Real ID is disregarded.
The guy who is trespassed is 5’9″. Our arestee is 6’1″.
They have a photo of the guy who is trespassed in the same room and they measured him against a measuring scale on the wall.
So they know the two people are different sizes.
But they have already decided that it is the same person.
Cognitive bias kicks in.
So instead of using their brain to figure out that they have 2 guys who look similar, they use their brains to imagine ever more fanciful explanations for how this nepharious criminal mastermind figured out how to get away with going back to a casino where he was caught sleeping on a bench.
Yes… that was the underlying trespass. Some guy fell asleep on a bench. So they trespassed him.
So they arrest him for trespassing.
And then they fingerprint him.
And verify that he is who he says he is.
So they charge him with trespassing anyway.
And to make it stick, they lie about it.
He has blue eyes.
The trespassed guy had brown eyes.
So they changed it to hazel, because it is a mixture.
And the prosecutors went forward with the case.
And went to trial.
And they proved the case had no merit.
So the judge dismissed the case *without prejudice*!!!
Because the prosecutor wants to have another chance to prove he was trespassing.
So the judge grants him another year to bring charges.
Unbelievable amounts of cognitive bias in action.
All they had was a photo of a different guy who looks similar. That is all.
So they believed the image recognition software. And therefore ignored any and all information contrary to this idea.
Different height, weight, eye color, 2 guys with Real ID…
Different adresses, birthday, … our guy has a car in his name, insurance in his name, even has a casino loyalty card in his name.
But the software matched… so they cannot even see that this is a problem.
It really is amazing how powerful cognitive bias can be.
Something I am noticing with increasing alarm in these civil rights cases….
The prosecutors are the root of the problem.
Yes, petty tyrants with badges do terrible things.
Yes, “the thin blue line” closes ranks to protect their own when they get caught doing terrible things.
But behind all of that, prosecutors are doing everything they can to make sure that police abuse is not only not punished criminally… but to make sure that it cannot be punished in civil court either.
So some guy gets arrested and beat up and charged with DUI, resisting arrest, assault on police…. and the video proves it is all a lie.
The prosecutor will push that bogus felony as far as he can – offering a plea deal to “operating a motor vehicle improperly” or somesuch, with no more time in jail, no more bond fees, no probation fees, no more lawyer fees…. jist plead guilty and it all goes away.
And so does your 1984 claim, since you just admitted that the stop was legal.
These guys need to be held accountable. This is where the solution is. They are supposed to be sworn to justice, not to be the government’s representative who makes sure the government always wins.
We have a system where the feds have a conviction rate of 95% or so. Over 90% of those are plea deals.
They actively punish you for going to trial if you can even afford that. Which most peons can’t. Even if you are in a court with a public defender somewhere, they’re given massive caseloads and very limited resources compared to the prosecution.
They have immunity from the consequences of their decisions in nearly all respects.
Few things truly deserve the “systemic” labor, but our justice system is systemically broken in every way.
Then you get the offenses that they ram you in the ass over compared to the ones that mere citizens actually care about. Like few people are dismissive of rape, but rapists continuously get punishments most people would view as lenient. Doesn’t matter where you look.
Why the fuck was a case over trespassing in court to begin with? I’m guessing because it’s a casino and there’s special bullshit laws protecting their property. I’d put money on it knowing nothing abut the laws in Reno.
The forms were followed, and the systems said it was correct. It’s not their job to apply critical thinking to the outcome, and they’ve got no skin in the game…

Example: this casino placed a *trespassing suspect* in handcuffs and held him against his will.

So the attorney spends 2 weeks and gathers a mountain of proof that she was never in the state at all.
And they finally release her.
In the dead of winter.
In Fargo North Dakota, hundreds of miles from home.
Without even a coat. Not even her false teeth.
Just kidnapped her, held her for 5 months and then dumped her on the street without any way to get home, or even tell anyone where she was.
