Last week I checked my CCW registration “just to make sure.” NY does not list an expiration on the licence nor send out any sort of renewal notice. Anyway, I was an idiot and had let it expire. I briefly considered taking a screenshot of my renewal application with me and hoping that would suffice, but it occurred to me that the Sherriff’s deputy who checks the license at the airport is undoubtedly bored out of his mind and would jump at the chance to do… anything interesting like arresting a gun criminal. Plus even if I didn’t go to jail they’d undoubtedly seize my guns and I don’t have the funds to replace them.
So I had resigned myself to not shooting the match but just flying out and working it. But I checked the NYSP website and my renewal went through in less than a week! They still don’t have all my guns on the list, but the one I’m taking that they’re missing is printed on my license, so that should be covered.

Constance Margaret Fisher was an American serial mass murderer. She killed three of her children in Maine in 1954. Officers searched the house and found Fisher hidden under a bed, unconscious from drinking a bottle of liquid shampoo in a suicide attempt. A note written by her was located, with Constance explaining that she had drowned the children to “save them from evil” and that God had ordered her to do so.
Fisher was arrested and charged with murder. The killings came as a shock to the community, who struggled to believe that she was capable of doing such a thing. Before she was able to stand trial, a forensic psychiatric examination concluded that she was suffering from paranoid schizophrenia and was thus unable to stand trial.
In 1955, her husband initiated a legal process to have her released. After four years, partly due to a national effort to deinstitutionalize mental patients, Constance was released into her husband’s custody on March 6, 1959.
The couple soon moved to a new home Carl had built for the family, where they would have three more children.
On June 30, 1966, Carl returned home from work only to find Constance drowned the three new children.
In spite of their attempts to have her convicted, her defense counsel managed to convince the court that Constance was insane, and the judge eventually ruled that she should be confined to the Augusta State Hospital for the rest of her natural life.
On October 1, 1973, after her husband Carl decided to stop visiting her, she managed to escape. She was found drowned shortly afterward.

The Environmental Protection Agency is expected to repeal rules that limit planet-warming greenhouse gas emissions from power plants fueled by coal and natural gas, an action that Administrator Lee Zeldin has said would remove billions of dollars in costs for the industry and help “unleash” American energy.
The rule change, proposed last year, could be announced as soon as Monday, according to two people familiar with the proposal, and represents a fundamental shift from efforts by Democratic Presidents Joe Biden and Barack Obama to address climate change and clean up industrial pollution, often in low-income and majority Black or Hispanic communities.
The rule, which is expected to face immediate legal challenges, also could prevent future administrations from regulating greenhouse gas emissions from power plants, the people familiar with the proposal said. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the final rule had not yet been made public.

As of July 7, all new passenger vehicles sold in the E.U. had to come equipped with “advanced driver distraction warning” systems that watch for signs of “distraction” and, upon detecting them, issue a visual and an audio or tactile warning. Cars will warn drivers whose gaze drifts for more than three to six seconds, depending on their speed.
To comply with this mandate, cars will have to fix cameras on drivers’ faces at all times, turning private motor vehicles into efficient surveillance systems. The equipment is supposed to operate as a “closed-loop system,” meaning it “shall only continuously record and retain data necessary for the system to function and operate.” But it is not clear how that rule will be enforced.”

Car enthusiasts are mourning the death of popular influencer James Wehr following a late-night crash that also killed another person.
At around 12:18 a.m. local time on Sunday, Sept. 13, the Irvine Police Department and Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) responded to reports of a vehicle fire at Culver Drive and Deerfield Avenue in Irvine, police said in a news release shared on Facebook. After extinguishing the blaze, authorities found two people dead inside a 2019 McLaren.
One of the victims has been identified as James Wehr, while the second individual has not been publicly identified, ABC7 and KTLA reported. Wehr, 27, was a co-founder of South OC Cars & Coffee, described on its website as “the biggest weekly car show in the world.”
“Unfortunately, we have some really heavy news to share with you all,” South OC Cars & Coffee wrote on Instagram, confirming Wehr’s death. “This morning, just after midnight, we lost our darling son and brother James in a motor accident.”

A preliminary investigation into the fatal crash determined that the 2019 McLaren stopped northbound on Culver Drive at Deerfield Avenue, the Irvine Police Department said. The vehicle traveled at a “high rate of speed” after the traffic light turned green.
Police believe that the driver lost control of the vehicle before striking a curb and a tree. The 2019 McLaren then “split in two and caught fire.”
“I was about to go to bed, and then I heard a big like, skrrrr and then a big boom. Me and my friends come out. Ginormous fire,” witness Sid told ABC 7. “The whole car is just gone.”

America needs a Department of the Arts with a cabinet-level secretary of the Arts charged with thinking about the whole ecosystem: artists and audiences, studios and independent creators, unions and technology companies, copyright and AI, arts education and America’s cultural exports. Its mission should protect creators’ rights and livelihoods, not police their creative choices. And Democrats should run on creating it in 2026 and 2028.
