Murderer’s Row

Somebody got an influx of money over at TUBI and a lot of new content dropped. This benefits us! One of the longer term requests from our own Common Tater was to get some Matt Helm/Derek Flint movies posted. Success! At least for the former. All the Matt Helm movies have posted! I picked my favorite, which heavily influenced Austin Powers: Murderer’s Row.

So what the heck is a Matt Helm, you may ask? It’s a series of spy films with Dean Martin as our secret agent. And they are over the top. Wild gadgets, lots and lots of Ford automotive products (They provided the star car for every film), and ridiculous bad guys. It’s fun for all! Deano sings a musical number every film too, so if you dislike that part, go refresh your drink like it’s intermission. I will not judge.

There were four Matt Helm movies, and then a short-lived TV show. Here are the details. I included a link to each film on TUBI, should you wish to see them all:

Murderer’s Row (1966): Secret agent Matt Helm must rescue the kidnapped inventor of an ultra-destructive “helio beam” capable of destroying Washington, D.C. This is our movie tonight! Look for all the pieces Mike Myers picked up for Austin Powers. Enjoy the absurdity of Deano driving a full-size Ford Thunderbird through Europe.

The Silencers (1966): It’s up to secret agent Matt Helm to save the day when a megalomaniac and his dastardly organization plot to sabotage America’s atomic missile system. Starts with Victor Buono wearing a monocle and scribing Matt Helm’s name on a bullet. Should be the Glibertarian official movie.

The Ambushers (1967): When an experimental flying saucer is brought down in Mexico, secret agent Matt Helm is sent to find it and keep it from falling into enemy hands.

The Wrecking Crew (1968): Super spy Matt Helm, with the help of agent Freya Carlson, travels to Denmark to find the mastermind behind the heist of a billion in US gold bullion.

Matt Helm TV Show (1975): A one-season show with 11 episodes. I suspect this is not available anywhere conventional due to licensing disputes. I did find it on Archive.com, should you wish to view them.

Each movie is filled to the top with smoking, drinking, sin, and the absolute joy of snarking. If you have never seen or heard of these, I do hope you enjoy!

So watch! Or don’t! Everything is voluntary! Next week, I will pick another audience request! I hope you take full advantage of commie labor day this coming Monday and cease your capitalist efforts for just one day.

Thank you for posting this Swiss, next time you are in Dallas for a gaming convention, stay at the house. I have some of the finest barbecue in Dallas, and I also make good drinks. The guestroom will be fully stocked for your relaxation.

    • DEG

      Can recommend RJ Manor.

      • Threedoor

How much alien probing is involved?

Or is it only the Greys that do that?

      • R.J.

That’s the Greys. Skinny, freaky little bastards. They don’t even wear clothes.I don’t go for that stuff.
I have been known to eat grifters though. But I don’t probe their anus first.

      • Threedoor

When you look like Marilyn Manson on the cover of Mechanical Animals do you really need clothes?

    • Spudalicious

      Full selection of Fleshlights?

        Only for Q.

    Oh yeah.

    diving in.

  3. Aloysious

I’m going to watch this fine flickture, but first I must incoherently rant.

World Cafe, a product of WXPN out of Philthydelphia, is the third worst radio show ever played on NPR. It pisses me off.

And now, our movie of the week.

    • R.J.

Why listen to it? There are so many options.

      • Aloysious

I was unable to put my book down and get off my ass before the wretched thing began melting my speakers.

The upside is I almost got chatgpt to insult the creator of the show.

    • Brochettaward

Was going to say why the fuck are any of you listening to NPR? Hate listening to a radio show?

      • Aloysious

They play Boise Philharmonic shows, as well as other classical stuff. Plus nostalgia for the olden days of yore when I listened to the radio all the time.

      • R.J.

We do have a public radio station here in Dallas. That plays almost entirely classical, except for Church services on Sunday. I do love some classical. It may be doxxing myself, but my sister was the singer in the wedding scene of Steel Magnolias.

      • Aloysious

RJ, they also play wonderful classical Christmas music as well. It’s only for a very short time, but they still play it.

Also, I don’t remember a green headed alien chik in Steel Magnolias.

      • R.J.

She wears the skin suit. Just like I so on Zooms. Makes my eye stalks hurt.

      • Gender Traitor

We have a local non-NPR public classical station. We like to listen for a while at bedtime, but the host at that time kept playing weird dissonant twentieth century crap to edumacate us. Switched to streaming the “Just Music” (no talking) classical channel on the SiriusXM app, connecting it to the fancy clock radio’s speaker via Bluetooth. Set the timer to shut it off after 15 minutes, and it’s pleasant dreams. 📱📻 🎶 😴

    • Threedoor

      NPR.
I sometimes listen to that on the weekends to get I touch with the enemies mindset.
It’s like the self flagellation of reading Salon.

      • Brochettaward

I mean, I’m exposed to NPC’s of the right and left variety on the daily. And I fully believe that we are seeing the development of right wing NPC’s as Trumpism has become establishmentarian in nature. You have MAGA types out there eulogizing Lindsey Graham and defending the turd Trump popped out that morning after his third tweet and covfefe.

      • R.J.

        Ain’t that the truth.
Honestly, I’m tired of both sides. A pox on them all.

      • Threedoor

After I didn’t run for a fourth term as a county R party precinct man I haven’t talked to any of the right NPCs.

Bunch of do nothing old guys. All talk. Mostly socialists loving their farm subsidies, social security and Medicare.

  4. Common Tater

“I did find it on Archive.com, should you wish to view them.”

Oh, I never seen them. I will download. Tonight I’m watching a 1080 Blu Ray rip.

    • R.J.

I don’t think I have ever seen all the episodes. I think I’ve maybe seen one. I’m excited to watch it too.

  5. R.J.

My dad loved Dean Martin and turtlenecks. He wore turtlenecks his entire life.

    • ron73440

      But was it a Tactleneck?

      • slumbrew

Thank you for enacting my labor, Ron.

  6. R.J.

The kids dancing at the disco tech are exhausting me. Man, I am old.

  7. R.J.

    Holy crap. Six ads.

  8. Aloysious

Influencing Austin Powers is a good thing.

    ‘Matt Helm’ sounds porny.

    • R.J.

If you haven’t ever seen these, it’s gonna be a revelation. Specially if you’ve already watched Austin Powers. My only regret is that “In Like Flint” is not currently available.

      • Aloysious

In like Flint is a classic, must watch flickture.

  9. rhywun

    *presses play*

  10. Aloysious

    Nice cast.

    Camilla Sparv? Whoa.

  11. Aloysious

    Phillipe can’t dance.

  12. DEG

This is fun. The redhead is yummy.

  13. R.J.

I made a mistake. I think I caught it when I was writing it, but then I didn’t correct it. The Silencers came first, then Murderers Row.

    • Common Tater

      Same year, easy mistake.

  14. Aloysious

I like the number of wimminz in this movie. There’s almost enough.

  15. DEG

Was that a California flag on that freighter?

    • DEG

      I rewound.

Yeah, there’s a California flag flying on the freighter when the freighter first appears. The California flag isn’t there later.

  16. Drake

So far it’s just Dean Martin being Dean Martin.

    • R.J.

      And this is surprising?

  17. R.J.

I love the leisurely chase scene with the Ford Thunderbird. They had to speed up the camera to make it look fast. If you tried to drive that Ford Thunderbird quickly around a corner, it would miss the mark and go straight into a wall.

  18. rhywun

It’s like 1966 threw up all over the screen.

    • R.J.

      Well, it did.

    • Threedoor

      So nothing new?

    • Common Tater

      Isn’t JI there now?

When I first heard of BM a long time ago, people were already saying it was much better before.

      • Threedoor

I first heard of it around 05.

It was almost interesting but even for me then was far to progie.

  19. Aloysious

    Love the soundtrack.

  20. Brochettaward

Most people are completely incapable of handling power or control over other people.

    • R.J.

I wish neither of those things. But I do like some good popcorn when I watch people fuck up.

  21. Aloysious

I can’t tell if they’re dancing, or having seizures.

    Nice outfits, tho.

  22. DEG

Did they put a Jungle Carbine flash hider on an M1 carbine?

    • Threedoor

The night vision 30 carbine kit included one.

Missed one last month that went for $600. Damn it.

    • DEG

IMFDB says it is a M9 flash hider.

  23. ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

    Jesus H Tiddy Fucking Christ.

Buyers did NOT sign today, apparently there are paperwork issues on their end, and they are going out of town tomorrow. Who the fuck does that when they are buying a house? Now I am back in limbo, the wife is freaking out, and I just want this over with. These buyers have been a pain in the ass the whole time, I am sure that at least one of them is being funded by parents, and they just do not know how to deal with things like this.

    Son of a bitch.

    • Threedoor

When we were signing/closing on our house we moved as fast as we could so we wouldn’t get scooped. I think the entire thing took 18 days if I remember correctly. No way did I want it to be dragged out.

    • DEG

      Sorry

    • Common Tater

      Damn kids!

    • Brochettaward

There’s only one answer to this.

      Burn it down.

    • Chafed

Sorry ZWAK. Do you have any back up offers?

    • Ownbestenemy

We were lucky or our realtor was good.. Not sure which. We did have to make some adjustments but they were minor and we moved it in less than 30 days. Of course we were in a state that you are probably in right now cause there was a few tense days where the buyer went silent. Good luck and hope it goes through.

    • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

Thanks everyone. I should go through next week, but this is a pain in the ass.

  24. Aloysious

This movie is rated R for smooching.

  25. DEG

    Whoa, a Triumph!

    • R.J.

I should ask Torchinsky to watch this movie. He would have a heyday.

      • Common Tater

        No idea who that is?

  26. DEG

    Redhead. Handlebars.

  27. Derpetologist

Illegal immigration is the only solution to the Social Security insolvency crisis. Foreign born workers, mostly Hispanic, will not vote to fund the retirements of whites.

At work, the Mexican guy said “man, if it was us in chains on plantations, we’d just burn that shit down.”

Me: And that’s why they didn’t get Mexicans to pick the cotton.

    [laughter from rednecks, Arab, Mexican]

Maybe an Asian or a black will show up at our blue-collar misery factory. We’ll have a fucked-up miniature UN.

    • R C Dean

Illegal immigration is the only solution to the Social Security insolvency crisis.

Not financially. To the extent they replace native workers at the same rates, there is no net gain in funding. To the extent they suppress wages, they reduce funding.

Foreign born workers, mostly Hispanic, will not vote to fund the retirements of whites.

I doubt foreigners voting illegally will move the needle on ending SocSec, and certainly not if they vote for Dems. If they are voting legally, they are citizens and participating in SocSec.

  28. Michael Malaise

I’ll have to start this one later. I’ve seen The Wrecking Crew and The Silencers. Also In Like Flint. Really fun stuff.

I have been quasi-binging Bergerac on Prime Video/Britbox. It’s what John Nettles did several years prior to Midsomer Murders, which I have enjoyed most of his episodes.

Bergerac is about Jim Bergerac, a recovering alcoholic police officer on the Channel Island of Jersey, working for Le Bureau des Étrangers. Of course he has a daughter and an ex-wife who hates him, and he has to stay sober and win back the trust of almost everyone he’s ever known.

The first 4-5 seasons are solid and interesting. Greta Scacchi made her debut in Season 1 and her really nice naked body is on display (one of the few episodes with nudity)

Then it gets a bit darker but the plots get overly complicated, hard to follow, and relatively boring. Nettles is always good. He has a hot French girlfriend the first season but she is written off and he takes up with a horribly-written character who spends most of the time upset he’s a cop.

The upside to the show is really the location shooting on the Channel Islands. Jersey is as much a character on the show as any of the actors, and it is nice to see real locations with real people doing real things.

A 2025 remake is predictably blah and dark, mumbled dialogue, and well changes to the story basics because?

    • R.J.

Why are all the films so dark now and devoid of color? It sucks.

  29. DrOtto

I can probably coach the wofe into all the Matt Helms. She likes Deano.

    • Brochettaward

In Florida, it’s all year round. I kind of cringe when I see some guy who I know drives like an asshole post some bullshit about look out for motorcycles. Or I see someone asking for donations for some cunt who was in an accident as a result of their own stupidity.

I know plenty of people drive them around just fine. But beyond the ones who want to pretend they are Evel Knievel or Ghost Rider you also get the ones who think it’s OK to blast their shitty music for the world to here. You chose a motorcycle you cunt. If you can’t find a way to listen to music without the entire world hearing your ACDC or Nickelback blaring in a residential area at 11 PM that’s a you problem.

      • Brochettaward

I’m not even that old yet and I’m already incredibly bitter. It’s 100% a result of people and how fucking stupid they are. And I can take humble-stupid, but that’s rare. Most people have been convinced that their opinions actually fucking matter. I don’t know if it’s universal suffrage or something in the DNA of this country that makes every mouth breather out there think they’re important…

Another tangent while I’m in my misanthrope mode – people who start shit that they obviously can’t handle. If you’re a “man” (and I’m not putting that in quotes because of trannies) and your only recourse against me if I snap is to call the cops or to report me to my manager later, you probably shouldn’t come at me acting like an asshole.

Everyone thinks they’re tough. Everyone thinks they’re important. Everyone thinks they have things figured out. No one has self-awareness. Everyone is convinced they are the fucking protagonist of the fucking world.

      • Derpetologist

Yeah, there’s an ambulance chaser ad where the lucky winner is complaining about how the evil insurance company wouldn’t pay seven figures after her husband wrecked his bike, just because he wasn’t wearing a helmet!

I’m thinking, if I’m on that jury, I’m not awarding anything for the head injury. Dumbass.

    • Chafed

Lane splitting is legal in CA and it drives me crazy. I am not moving over in my lane to make room for your motorcycle. Lead, follow, or get out of the way.

  30. DEG

The end was a little drug out, but I liked the movie.

    • ron73440

It’s entertaining so far, I am 25 minutes in.

  31. Chafed

I know I saw one of these movies forever ago. I had no idea there was a Matt Helm TV show. The things I learn here! Thanks R.J.

    • Common Tater

Because America! Do they have custom steering wheels so you can hold a drink in the other hand in Saudi Arabia?

      • Chafed

        Hell no!

        USA! USA! USA!

  32. Ownbestenemy

So general thought is 11-1 ‘not guilty’ jury polling that cray-cray is not-guilty based on defense attorney passionate plea to the judge.

Maybe. Who knows. Def Attorney could be hedging his bet on that. Could be 11-1 guilty and prosecutor is like…judge will handle it.

Drugs put us in a crazy state of mind, and I will be biased, you lined up your kids to strangle them one-by-one. Usually human instinct might kick in by kid one, maybe kid two..but three in a row..you knew what you were doing.

    • Allen

I haven’t been following the case too closely, but it sounds like the prosecution went out of there way to make a weak case. That said, the combination of disregarding/refusing the recommended treatments of medical professionals and sending her husband away for sufficient time, plus having to do it one at a time really feels like a bridge too far to me, too.

      • Common Tater

“I haven’t been following the case too closely, but it sounds like the prosecution went out of there way to make a weak case. ”

Is that true? The prosecution bought into it?

      • Allen

Not so much that they bought into it, but more that they have the burden of proof in a criminal trial and they couldn’t settle on a theory of the case. Their story for what could have happened varied expert by expert, so you ended up with different potential stories rather than sticking with a “she could have been mentally unwell but that isn’t enough to be found not guilty by reason of insanity”. More they thought it was in the bag and so didn’t do their homework, rather than thinking she was insane.

My concern was she gets found not guilty by reason of insanity, but now she’s “no longer insane” so she (an admitted triple killer) is released back into the world decades before someone who committed a violent-but-not-deadly crime.

    • Common Tater

She wasn’t even diagnosed with post partum psychosis afaik. The whole thing is bullshit.

    • Ownbestenemy

The implications will be juror #12 really. Are they really just ignoring the judge’s instructions or are they deliberating honestly…If the later, declare the mistrial; that will tell us if the prosecution really wants to try this case in good faith the next go around.

  33. Brochettaward

Watching video of ICE beating some protestors ass. They were apparently throwing rocks at agents from the bridge. Two of ICE went to down on the guy honestly.

You have a crowd of idiots, some men. One guy is shouting “record.” For all the talk the only ones who jumped in to actually engage with ICE physically were two dopey broads. You can guess how effective they were.

    • Common Tater

      Off with their heads!

    • ron73440

As I drove home today I went past Old Dominion University.

There was a man and a woman by the side of the road, both about 60 years old and obviously college professors.

The man was holding the obligatory ABOLISH ICE sign and the woman had BLM, CLIMATE CHANGE IS REAL, and other lefty bumper sticker slogans on hers.

      They changed my mind.

  34. Evan from Evansville

The Fogerty show was good. Steve Winwood opened. Fogerty has a lot of energy for an 80yo. Damn. The bass had already been heavy, but by the end, I kinda had a bit of a moment. No worry, but in the ballpark of worry. Worry adjacent. The song, and then songs, just sounded ‘off.’ Bro, also a drummer, said it sounded normal. They were in time, but with my hearing, and something else, it gotta rattled around and was jarring. Just, off. They’ve never affected me, but I made sure to stay clear of strobe-lighty things.

Huh. But all in all, it was a really good show. (Didn’t care for Winwood. Nothing wrong, but, meh.) Mostly older folk, but not all. It was old ladies ‘dancing’ at the end. In their rows.

Well. Hotel in Matteson, IL. Dad’s got a bed and older bro and I are sharing the other. Interesting day. Officially signed for employment, first day Sept. 14. Got a Fogerty show, too. Hopefully sleep swiftly comes. To you too, if ya want it.

  35. Trigger Hippie

Well…My three day weekend brought a revelation. It’s now obvious that everybody I work with, including my employer, is a fucking coke fiend. I’ve seen first hand a few too many times now…also, owed two weeks of back pay. I swear to Christ, if I don’t get squared up in the next couple of days things are going to get real fucking ugly…

Applications for other jobs have already been submitted.

      That is funny right there

    • Brochettaward

Greatest orator of our time. He’s more comprehensible than Obama and his cliches and word salads and can still make laugh even if it’s just because the idea of the US president saying shit like that.

    • Brochettaward

There’s so much wrong with the healthcare system and nearly all of it comes from government fuckery. It might as well be funny money at this point.

Euro trash gets to pay less because of price controls and freeload on American R&D. Combine that with removing the consumer from the actual price of care and you give the pharmaceutical companies a blank check to jack up rates here while Europeans pay the bare minimum. An amount they can only afford to begin with because the US subsidizes their defense completely.

What we have these days isn’t even insurance. Might as well just call the insurance companies public utilities at this point.

Meanwhile Grandma and Grandpa are getting offered plush benefits to sign up with Aetna over United so they can get some more of that sugar from Uncle Sam.

Like most of what is happening in the US these days it’s all a fucking scam that mirrors a big game of hot potato in terms of accountability and who doesn’t want to be the last guy holding the bag when it all blows up. Some corporate shitbags trying to get theirs right fucking now from a broken system before the entire thing inevitably implodes.

I firmly believe in markets. But the more and more I look at what we have in this country the more I’m like where is the free part of the market? Free to fuck over consumers? Yea that part is still there.

Modern American capitalism! All the downsides of capitalism while no longer containing any of the shit that worked. Sort of like that peanut butter cup you ate that tasted and looked like waxy baby shit left in the sun too long.

When it goes tits up they’ll say it was late stage capitalism and talk about Marx in breathless reverence for his keen insight. Nah, it was universal suffrage and democracy that will have done killed the golden goose more than anything else.

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

Capitalism is wonderful; crony capitalism sucks as bad as socialism and in some ways is worse. People that aren’t ideologically minded, meaning most people when it gets right down to it, are just looking for a workable solution though and it’s hard to blame them.

Good morning, Sean, Ted’S., homey, and Beau!

        Morning, GT.

Been behind schedule all morning. Got to the office and found the critters who share this office with me are disgusting people who need to learn not to leave fluids on door handles and elevator buttons.

At least it appears to have been soap. God knows people have left far worse fluids on door handles.

I just want this week to be over and for a good week to start.

      • Gender Traitor

fluids on door handles and elevator buttons.

How are things with you and 🎸😺🐱‍👤?

      • Beau Knott

        Mornin’ GT!
I spent too much time yesterday walking around the hospital wher my cardiac ablation is scheduled. I’d been getting confused and confusing stories about what the prep was supposed to be, made worse by the change in surgeons. The new one, who’s new to this hospital, has a *completely* different prep routine than the previous doc, and they keep mixing the two 🙄
Finally got firm clarity, and it’s much easier than the original surgeon’s regimen. So, it was worth it, but geez, nobody seems to manage changed procedures across all affected parties. My friend at the MSU library is dealing with similar issues as they change software systems and subsystems.
Hopefully none of those parties will stick an oar in & screw things up! The holiday weekend might actually work in my favor 😉

OK, but I’ve had a frustrating situation at work. We ship lots of documents via UPS, and all employees have been using the same credentials to log in to our account. I check the bill each week, and we’ve had no problems, but UPS’s website has been “detecting logins from different locations,” so they’re threatening to start using MFA. I don’t know how that will work, as it’s my work email on the account. I spent more than an hour Wednesday trying to reach someone by phone to enroll in a service that would allow multiple users, each with a unique login, but I got nowhere. Hoping I get an email back from someone who can actually provide customer service. 😒

No answer is worse than “No”

I got bounced from Bangalore to Bombay to New Delhi to Calcutta. I even knew the service I wanted – “I want to enroll our account in UPS CampusShip!!!” Nobody I spoke to could seem to get me to a SALES rep, and the website didn’t tell me how to connect with one either. I guess UPS has too much business and wants to lose customers.

a *completely* different prep routine than the previous doc, and they keep mixing the two 🙄

Beau, that’s certainly unnerving when they’re going to be … ablating?… your heart! 😳 Glad you FINALLY got it figured out!

Sorry about crappy UPS support GT! I used to find them solid & reliable, but they seem to have really gone downhill over the last 5-10 years 🙁

To be replaced by another though…LGBTQ+ center isn’t going anywhere.

OK OK, I get it. My humor detector just wasn’t awake yet.

Artificially inflating prices on cheap goods via fees/tariffs/whatever results in people shopping elsewhere? Market distortion begets market distortion, whooda thunk it?

For the fans of German electronic music amongst is, here’s Kraftwerk – Minimum-Maximum LIVE 2005.
The first piece, Die Mensch Maschine (The Man Machine), shows them off the best imnsho. Also includes a shorter version of Autobahn and pieces from Trans-Europe Express.

Scroll back to 0:00:00 if it starts around the 1 minute 45 second mark. I had trouble getting a reliable “start at the beginning” link. The intro is fun.

Wonderful. Didn’t know it was on video.

Secret agent Matt Helm must rescue the kidnapped inventor of an ultra-destructive “helio beam” capable of destroying Washington, D.C.

So he can finish the job, right?

    Right?
