Further Profiles in Toxic Masculinity — Douglas Munro

by | Oct 20, 2026 | History, In Memoriam, Military | 86 comments

Douglas Munro was born in Vancouver to an American father and a British mother, and his family moved to the United States when he was a child. Under the naturalization laws of the time, his mother had automatically gained U.S. citizenship when she married his father, so Munro was American, even though he was born in Canada.  He was raised in South Cle Elum, Washington, and attended the Central Washington College of Education before volunteering for military service shortly before the United States entered World War II. Munro and his shipmate Raymond Evans were known as the Gold Dust Twins, so-called because they were inseparable.

On September 27, 1942, during the brutal Guadalcanal campaign, Lieutenant Colonel Lewis “Chesty” Puller landed three companies of the 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, near Point Cruz to push back Japanese forces. However, the Marines walked into a massive Japanese ambush and were quickly surrounded, pinned down against the water, and cut off from communication.

Noticing their desperate situation, a Marine spelled out “HELP” using undershirts on a nearby ridge. Back at the naval staging base, 22-year-old United States Coast Guard Signalman First Class Douglas Albert Munro immediately volunteered to lead a rescue flotilla of Higgins landing craft under fierce enemy fire to evacuate the nearly 500 trapped men.

As the rescue fleet approached the shore, heavy Japanese machine-gun fire rained down from the treeline, threatening to annihilate the boats before they could load the Marines. Munro skillfully positioned his landing craft directly between the beachhead and the enemy positions, using his vessel and its light weapons as a physical shield to draw hostile fire away from the rescue craft.

His selfless tactics allowed the rest of the fleet to land, collect all five hundred Marines, including the wounded, and begin making their way back to safety.

During the final phase of the extraction, one heavily loaded landing craft ran aground on a coral reef, exposed to constant enemy fire. Munro maneuvered his boat back into harm’s way to protect the stranded craft until it broke free. Moments later, enemy fire struck Munro, fatally wounding him in the back of the head.

He briefly regained consciousness in the arms of his close friend Evans, long enough to ask his final words: “Did they get off?” Upon hearing that all the Marines had escaped safely, Munro smiled and passed away. For his heroic sacrifice, President Franklin D. Roosevelt posthumously awarded him the Medal of Honor, making Munro the only member of the U.S. Coast Guard to ever receive the nation’s highest military award.

Munro’s remains were recovered from Guadalcanal in 1947 and were reinterred at Laurel Hill Memorial Park in Cle Elum in 1948, his family having declined a full military burial at the Arlington National Cemetery. In 1954, the City of Cle Elum expanded Munro’s gravesite with the installation of two decommissioned Mk22 naval deck guns to either side of the tombstone. Munro’s parents were later buried on either side of their son’s grave at Laurel Hill. The entire site has since been added to the Washington Heritage Register.

The United States Coast Guard Cutter Munro is the latest of three warships named in memory of the man.

Tough to emulate. There are some that rise to the occasion but they are damned few…

Must be a little dust in the air here. You know, even France and UK used to produce such men.

        Mad dogs and Englishmen.

I met a handful of them overseas but they are damn few. Sadly here too.

Sorry, but when I start hearing about “inseparable” sailors called the “Gold Dust Twins,” my mind goes to sodomy.

Did you guys know that in the 1920’s there was a big scandal with the government because it investigated the culture of sodomy/homosexuality in the Navy? Not because it looked into it, but because they paid nominally straight sailors to engage in homosexual relations to learn all they could.

      • Threedoor

        Gay for pay a thing.

      • Brochettaward

I’ve been offered my own island to go gay.

Did they ever find that Dorothy chick?

      • Threedoor

        Dorthy?

      • Not Adahn

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, the Naval Investigative Service (NIS), the predecessor to the modern-day Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS), was investigating homosexuality in the Chicago area. Agents discovered that gay men sometimes referred to themselves as “friends of Dorothy”. Unaware of the historical meaning of the term, the NIS believed that there actually was a woman named Dorothy at the center of a massive ring of homosexual military personnel, so they launched an enormous and futile hunt for the elusive “Dorothy”, hoping to find her and convince her to reveal the names of gay service members.[20]

    Toxic

Rep. Greg Meeks of New York, the top Foreign Affairs Committee Democrat, said much the same — calling in a Monday statement for “a full accounting of the damage Mr. Musk and DOGE caused.”

“The cruel dismantling of USAID, championed by Elon Musk and carried out by Secretary Rubio, saved no taxpayer money, balanced no budget, and made America no safer,” Meeks said, adding that the panel “will not let anyone obstruct our oversight.”

The Democrats are sharpening their knives. Vengeance is coming.

    • Threedoor

Elections in South America say otherwise.

    • EvilSheldon

If you follow DataRepublican on Twix, then you’ve probably seen that ‘vengeance is coming’ a lot sooner and harder than we were expecting.

For those that aren’t up to date, DR has documents and conversations that lay out a plan by a loosely organized group of current and former State Department and IC professionals, to forment civil unrest after the midterms, provoke the Trump administration into using the Insurrection Act, then use that as a pretense to remove Trump from power/completely reshape the government.

I strongly suggest you go over to https://x.com/DataRepublican and take a look at the pinned threads. If even 10% of this is accurate, then we are in for some very serious shit.

      • RAHeinlein

Thanks for the call-out – I follow DR on X and this is some crazy and credible SH*&! I’m not surprised given what seems to be a global movement.

      • Threedoor

      • R C Dean

They are planning to use Democrat Governors to provoke Trump into invoking the Insurrection Act. Its already starting – aside from the sanctuary city stuff, some states are denying any federal election observers, auditors, etc., even the most routine ones. I expect the next escalation will be truly blatant election fraud, daring Trump to do anything about it.

What their middle and end game is for a handful of Democrat Governors to spearhead a commie, maybe a Red/Green alliance, take-over of the government, I could not say. Even if they take the House and Senate, removing Trump and Vance seems like a very long shot, and without doing that, they can’t do much and those Governors are swinging in the wind.

    • Drake

I love full accountings, audits even. Let’s do it.

      • Threedoor

        Nothing to see here.
We investigated ourselves and found us to be as pure as the freshly fallen snow.

  6. The Late P Brooks

But plenty of rank-and-file Democrats want Musk personally held to account — including some on panels with less obvious ties to the tech mogul.

Rep. Maxine Dexter (D-Ore.), for instance, sits on the Natural Resources and Veterans Affairs committees. She said she sees Musk among “the well-connected billionaire, trillionaires who have seen government contracts as a way to subsidize their own company’s research, development, and bottom line.”

“We need to shut that down,” she added.

I’m sure she wants the heads of Boeing and Raytheon sitting in the dock next to him.

    These people are goofy.

    • Fourscore

No one should be above the law but alas…

    • RAHeinlein

I look forward to the fireworks if the Dems subpoena musk – I think the words “go F’ yourself” will be uttered.

    • Brochettaward

Pointed it out before, but the same people ranting and raving because of what access Elon does or doesn’t give to his technology in the Ukraine war are the same ones saying that he shouldn’t be getting contracts from the Pentagon.

It truly is just goofy. Ukraine needs Starlink to fight and conduct its war, but they think the Pentagon won’t?

      • Not Adahn

        Starlink should be nationalized, obvs.

In the Marines we learned many “Chesty” Puller stories (He is famous to us), but I never heard this one.

I guess getting stuck in an ambush so badly they have to signal for help with their clothes isn’t one they brag about.

He does have a lot of good ones though.

I highly recommend With the Old Breed by EB Sledge.

Headline from the campaign – “Dr. Amy Acton’s Brother’s Statement on Ramaswamy Platforming Their Estranged and Abusive Mother”

She uses plural pronouns? It’s an interesting headline how it’s framed as a direct attack on Ramaswamy and a passive one on “their” mother.

    • Threedoor

      That is odd.
But the Dems have rounded the bend and there is no coming back from the madness. It’s a badge for them now.

    • EvilSheldon

Huge own goal for Vivek (as one would expect.)

You’d think someone in his campaign would have looked into the reason that Mommy and Daughter weren’t speaking (Mommy divorced Daddy and married some shitbag with credible accusations of sexual abuse) before adding her face to their campaign…

Like Europe, they don’t want to spend any of their resources on their own defense. Saudis have a lavish welfare state. The people there are belligerent, but have no desire to actually fight.

I still have no idea what public statements like that are supposed to accomplish. The Iran War was such a massive fuck-up. It’ll reverberate and have far larger implications for America’s position in the world than anything we did in Iraq or Afghanistan even as what we did there influenced the limited options with Iran to begin with.

      • R C Dean

I think its not so much they don’t want to spend on their own defense, its that they are structurally and culturally incapable of fielding an effective military.

      • Brochettaward

I wouldn’t argue with that. America itself wasn’t able to take Afghans and Iraqis and make them effective fighters.

Yet the Saudis have never really even tried in modern history. Buying a couple of used toys from the West not withstanding.

    • Threedoor

“essentially a quid pro quo whereby the U.S. provided security in exchange for oil”

BS. No one gives the US oil.

Looks like the UK is sending Typhoon fighter jets to Saudi for defense against Houthi drones/missile attached.

NEW YORK (AP) — Halley Froehlich was sure she’d spend her scientific career in the United States. Her family has been in America since the 1700s.

But over the past two years, delayed federal grants and fears about the future motivated her to pack her life into boxes. She moved to Finland with her husband and daughter and is continuing her research — studying how fish, shellfish and seaweed that humans eat are responding to climate change — at the University of Helsinki.

How will the US survive without this vital publicly paid for insight?

I ate 8 oz of marbled pork belly, seared – oh, okay.
I ate a half pound of bacon – you what?

I admit none of you are likely to judge me for that quantity of bacon – my own brain is going “what are you doing, glutton?”

I did have green beans with it. But the bacon was the core of the meal.

    • Threedoor

The question was “UCS, what is good in life?!”

Did you saute the beans in the bacon grease?

Finally got around to looking at this

“Wealth inequality has become a danger to our society, and we need to address that,” he said. “We should have a national wealth tax — it won’t work by state because people will just move. And I think we should have inheritance taxes that get close to 100% at some level. I would pay them.”

Muh equity! And then he said he was going to take a pay cut to what the baggage handlers make, and write a 20 million dollar check to “Gifts to the Treasury”, right?

    RIGHT?

Same guy who wants to charge more for an aisle seat than a middle seat. What a fucking clown.

    • R C Dean

Big of him to say he’s happy to turn over his property to the government.

      After he’s dead.

    • Brochettaward

When it comes to selecting seats, he said that it costs money to make it happen.

You can literally just let it be first come, first serve. He knows that. What his dumb comments accomplished perhaps in his mind is deflecting from the business practice they asked about in the first place.

  16. The Late P Brooks

Big of him to say he’s happy to turn over his property to the government.

He must have quite a happy home life.

Video making the rounds of “migrants” of the African complexion chasing down a French female cop and initiating a shark attack.

So many stereotypes in one video…So little time.

No civilization in history has sewn the seeds of its own destruction like the modern West has. We allowed our enemies to take our morals and principles – things they were explicitly opposed to in every conceivable way – and weaponize them against us to gain power. Every time you see some third world cockroach talk about colonization and the white man’s historical sins, that’s all they’re doing. And the second they actually gain real power that will be painfully obvious to everyone. They have nothing resembling our beliefs and won’t be hamstrung by anything they said in the past.

    • R C Dean

I hesitate to ask, but, what is a “shark attack”?

      • Not Adahn

They tape headphones on her and play “Baby Shark” on repeat.

      • Brochettaward

I was just referencing a group attack there. No real deeper meaning. Like 4-5 of them starting a physical attack after catching her/knocking her to the ground. Video cut off that I saw so don’t know how bad it was by the end.

      • rhywun

        Why do you ask, chum?

    • Brochettaward

It’s also hard to feel sorry for the female cop after the videos of how they behave in Europe have come out over recent years. They seem to be the first ones to enforce the good think on white guys no matter how absurd the scenarios are. Terrified to confront the diversity people for fear of being called racist, but also because they know those cockroaches will employ violence against them in numbers while the white guy will meekly obey their authority.

Kerry was WHO’s first special envoy for climate change and health, is director of global health and climate policy at Harvard School of Public Health and is the founder and CEO of Seed Global Health.

Another professional NGO tax parasite, though better connected than most due to who her daddy was.

  18. The Late P Brooks

Marc Benioff, CEO of Salesforce (CRM), wrote in 2019 that “increasing taxes on high-income individuals like myself would help generate the trillions of dollars that we desperately need to improve education and healthcare and fight climate change.”

    What a fucking retard.

    • Brochettaward

If there’s one thing no one has tried with American education, it’s throwing money at the problem.

  19. The Late P Brooks

It’s the latest addition to an impressive resume. Kerry was WHO’s first special envoy for climate change and health, is director of global health and climate policy at Harvard School of Public Health and is the founder and CEO of Seed Global Health. That nonprofit group has been building resilience in lower-resource countries for over a decade, dispatching coaches and mentors to educate and train local healthcare students and practitioners as well as building financial and material resources.

Take up the white man’s burden.
