Saturday evening Links

It appears that All Hallows Eve is upon us. We typically don’t get more than about 30 kids. The wife gets to hand out the candy while I hold the dog on the leash. Otherwise, he’s going to greet every little kid who comes to the door with a firm nose right in the butt crack. Fun times.

Links?

He seem like fun.

Probably a lot more fun than the meetings.

I’m aware of the danger of mass vodka consumption.

45 million dollars…

President Dude Bro throws down.

There’s gotta be some Polack jokes in here somewhere.

Karma can be a real bitch.

I’m so glad I left that state.

I normally have a pretty good idea how election season is going to go. This year, I don’t have a clue about how it ends up.

Okay, that’s it for me. Time to get ready for the kiddies. Peace out, Glibbies.

Spudalicious

Survey says I’m a Paleolibertarian bitches. That means I eat “L”ibertarians for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Soave tastes a little fruity. Wait a minute, that doesn’t sound quite right…

Argle bargle… I have never, not once, received a “full sized” candy bar from trick and treating. I don’t know what fancy pants people do that but outside of an animated sitcom it does not happen AFAIK.

    • creech

Obviously, you didn’t trick or treat in the 1950s. Regular size candy bars were the rule not the exception.

      • rhywun

Did “fun size” even exist yet?

      • Spudalicious

I remember getting homemade baked goods.

I got a few full sized candy bars in my bag pretty much every Halloween. Didn’t go to any place fancy, just the small town I went to school in. Not even close to being the norm, but yeah I’d get about 3-5 that night. Oddly enough, they were usually Milky Ways for whatever reason.

        …I miss candy.

    • Spudalicious

      Neph does full size.

U.S. Embassy warns of potential mass-casualty threat at Moscow tourist attraction

Umm… given that the US is basically at kinetic action with Russia right now I don’t think a lot of Americans are showing up there.

    • Trigger Hippie

“The U.S. government is coordinating with appropriate Russian authorities on a response,” the embassy said in its warning.

So on the one hand we fund money, weapons, and satellite info to keep Ukraine fighting and killing Russians. On the other hand we want to buy their oil and help with Intel to prevent possible terror attacks/and or military action to save not only tourists lives but Russian lives as well.

      Foreign diplomacy is odd.

    Brain drain

“We have the success of the postwar period to show that the current model works pretty well,” said Steven Durlauf, an economist at the University of Chicago’s Harris School of Public Policy, referring to the historic role of the federal government in supporting academic research. Today, with funding uncertainty at least and cuts at worst, said Durlauf, “we’re on a suicidal trajectory.”

Blaming the interruptions in funding that have already occurred, top research universities have admitted 15 percent fewer doctoral students for the coming fall, including in fields such as artificial intelligence and quantum computing, according to the Association of American Universities, or AAU. Many didn’t take any new doctoral students at all.

Doctoral programs train scientists to teach and conduct research in fields including technology and treatments for medical problems.

“America faces the alarming prospect of losing an entire generation of scientific talent,” the AAU says.

Just after the start of the second Trump administration, about half of Ph.D. students and postdoctoral researchers in bioengineering said they were likely to leave academia, according to a survey by researchers at Harvard, MIT and elsewhere. The proportion who said they’d likely leave the United States was also up.

I like how they assume as incontrovertibly true the unmitigated excellence (and necessity) of all academic programs equally. Academic freedom is under siege!

I had somehow remained blissfully ignorant of the “Good Men Project” until a short while ago. Another story on the site: “This Isn’t an Election; It’s a Rescue Mission—And You Can Still Save Someone”

Men; there oughtta be a bounty om ’em.

To be fair, a lot of unfriendly rival countries are champing at the bit to throw their subjects’ wealth at any foreigners willing to science for them.

    • Grumbletarian

Chinese institutions, for example, have increased their production of graduates with doctoral degrees much faster than American ones in the critical fields of science, technology, engineering and math. Rather than expanding, U.S. doctoral programs are now admitting fewer candidates or have stopped accepting new applicants altogether.

American universities are well ahead in churning out people with doctorates in assorted Grievance Studies though.

Awarded tens of millions for refugee resettlement, lunch costs

I get the money to bring in more jihadists – certainly a top concern of those outfits – but why exactly are “Islamic centers” serving school lunches…?

  5. The Late P Brooks

The damage our Republic has sustained over the past two years is incalculable.

There is no way to accurately quantify the irreparable harm done to the connective tissue of this nation, to our systems of support, to our electoral processes, to our safeguards against foreign and domestic threats, and perhaps, most of all, to the relational tethers we have to one another.

Everything is fractured, nothing has been spared.

He and they have poisoned the collective so completely that we’re almost better off not even attempting to fathom it, lest the grief fully paralyze us and render us hopeless.

    Saints preserve us!

    • rhywun

Oh no, not the collective! 😢

  6. The Late P Brooks

This is a life-or-death proposition; a rescue mission.

It is a rescue mission for our nation, one final chance to rip our destinies from the hands of an extremist death cult whose love for both God and country is nonexistent; an unashamedly sadistic cadre of morally defective beings.

We’re gonna need a bigger dose of smelling salts.

    • Fourscore

“It is a rescue mission for our nation, …”

I have an idea that with a certain amount of money involved lifeguards would spring into action. The availability of money and some saviors would find each other.

  7. Sensei

    He seem like fun.

Paywalled, but from the first two paragraphs, he sure does.

  8. The Late P Brooks

Giving out full-size candy bars misses the point of Halloween. Here’s why.

Drat. The paywall won’t allow me to read the prissy moralizing sermon. Sad.

  9. The Late P Brooks

I remember getting homemade baked goods.

Cookies and brownies were good. Popcorn balls got tossed in the grass for the birds.

  10. rhywun

Huh… I just realized my state doesn’t have a “bottle bill”. I only just noticed when examining my receipt from this morning’s supermarket run.

That would explain the lack of vagrants and little old Asian women patrolling the streets battling with each other to dig through trash and tear open bags to get at the cans and bottles – something that was scratching just under the surface of my brain. And the overflowing piles of discarded cans and bottles everywhere – oh, wait. There isn’t that.

I’ve probably wasted hundreds of dollars on that bullshit over all the years I lived in NY and CA.

      • rhywun

In my brief experience so far I’m liking some of the little things that make NJ suck slightly less hard than NY. I haven’t encountered anything that sucks harder.

      • Sensei

NJ probably sucks worse on guns, but NYS tightened and has mostly caught up.

Liquor sales and licenses are tighter, I believe. Especially for restaurants that want to serve. Regulated like taxi medallions were in NYC.
