Saturday Morning WTF Already? Links

by | Oct 3, 2026 | Daily Links, Penises | 89 comments

Two things have made me very much feel my age: the first is how fast the year is flying by. It’s fucking OCTOBER already??? Of 2026, a year in the far future???

The second is depressing: how fast cultural touchstones are being memory holed. I found out that not a single person on our staff under 30 years old had any idea who Yoko Ono was/is. Totally unfamiliar name. “John Lennon” was a mystery to all but one. Now you can argue that these were figures from before they were born, but JFC, people my age knew who Glenn Miller, Frank Sinatra, and Tommy Dorsey were, even if they couldn’t immediately name songs associated with them. The retrospective horizon seems to be shrinking faster than the years are passing. One small consolation: our morning cook at least knew the name John Lennon, and to show her who Yoko Ono was, l0b0t showed her the infamous Chuck Berry clip, and her unbelieving gawking was perfectly apropos.

And unbelievably, many newborns appeared on this date, including Francisco d’Anconia’s spirit animal (one of whose movies we watched two nights ago); a guy who never went home; a guy whom I fervently wish had lived long enough to witness this timeline; a true Madman; a guy who could even piss off William F. Buckley; a mystery wrapped in an enigma wrapped in a Big Bambu; a guys who took a superb and creative band and made them more successful and musically bland; a scumbag Jew-hater who Team Blue tongue-bathes with adoration; a source of relief to the pigeons of Austin; and a wide receiver who was brutally fun to watch.

Links are not fun to watch.

You know, there IS an “off” switch.

They hate us because they’re stupid.

One important bit left out of this story. Hopefully, many bits exited the story.

At this point, you know it’s just trolling.

Comment dit-on “yoots” en Francais?

I believe in Total Influencer Death.

He’s working hard every day to sink his party.

So the Left hates Pajeets now.

Hang him, then shut it the fuck down. Another “gift” from that moron Reagan that keeps on giving.

“The enemy of my enemy…”

I’ll admit finding this hilarious.

This seemed appropriately topical.

TBF, Frank Sinatra was still alive and doing stuff. He could also sing.

    • Nephilium

Hell, the girlfriend saw Sinatra in concert. We both saw Jerry Lee Lewis and the Platters, I’ve seen the Skatalites, Toots and the Maytals, and more. Lennon died while I was a kid.

    • Mojeaux

So, about that. I FLUVED Sinatra when I was a tween, but as I got older, I realized he really kinda couldn’t sing, or at least, not as well as Mel Torme and Tony Bennett. Some time around my late 20s, I was just over him.

OTOH, speaking of crooners and torch songs, I can’t STAND Linda Ronstadt’s voice—unless she’s got Nelson Riddle behind her and then I’m there for her.

  3. Common Tater

Anquan Boldin seemed lazy, that he never lived op to his potential.

    • Old Man With Candy

The 2012 Ravens might disagree. He was a monster on that team, and them dropping him for cap space ranks at possibly the second stupidest decision in franchise history (drafting Sergio Kindle being the first, though I’d entertain drafting Kyle Boller as a contender).

      • Nephilium

        Fuck the Ravens!

    • Oy the Billy-Bumbler

If I remember correctly, Boldin’s first game as a rookie was against the Lions and he torched them for like 200 yards. I claimed him the next day in my old dynasty fantasy football league at Thermotron.
Now I’m going to go check my memory.

    • Oy the Billy-Bumbler

      From the Wiki link.

Boldin set an NFL record for most receiving yards by a rookie in his first game with 217 on ten receptions against the Detroit Lions.

I still can’t believe that can’t come up with one shot that can kill someone.

    • R C Dean

There are dozens. They just won’t use them because the system is infested with people who want to shut down executions altogether.

      The government fucks up everything.

      • Sean

It was a total set up.

    • EvilSheldon

Doesn’t even have to be a shot. Nitrous Oxide asphyxia just takes a tank of NO and a non-rebreather mask, and stupid hippies and suicidal dentists the world over have proven how painless it is.

    • Pope Jimbo

one shot that can kill someone.

Well there is one, but it contains way more lead than health standards allow. Too bad that the corrections people don’t have the brass to use it anyhow.

Fuming neighborhood residents sued the school and the city in January 2025, arguing that the stretch of quad space was intended to remain public after the Big Apple sold it to the private Ivy League institution decades ago.

They’re right. The “Walk” was a normal public street before the university bought the property under the condition that they would continue to allow public access.

BBC is still calling the Antifa riots “education protests” because of course they are.

  11. R C Dean

“What had long been radical libertarian views on gay rights, recreational drug use, pornography and vices such as gambling have now become law throughout the Western world.”

I would say those are more libertine than libertarian. Many of these “successes” were accompanied by expansions of state intrusion – gay rights became forced association, recreational drugs are now a captured revenue stream for the state (or else still illegal), etc.

Outside of the still pretty limited rollback of gun control in the US, one searches pretty much in vain for actual reduction in state control or involvement in our lives.

    • EvilSheldon

‘Leaving people to go to their own hell on their own dime’ wasn’t acceptable to the State or the social engineers (on the left or the right.)

      • rhywun

    • Nephilium

Well, if you mean I believe they’re against all standards, that’s correct. Education standards is just a subset of what they want torn down though.

  14. R C Dean

So the Left hates Pajeets now.

If the allegations of fraud are true (and I wouldn’t be a bit surprised), then people should go to jail.

This inevitably led to a bunch of frustrated strivers with big expectations and no way to fulfill them. And that mismatch between expectation and opportunity, I hypothesize, fueled some of the unrest of the 2010s.

Supply, demand – how do these things work?!?

      • rhywun

Especially when the “demand” is restricted almost entirely to favored groups. People get a little touchy when they are told not to believe what is obvious to anyone with open eyes.

      • Nephilium

“And I feel badly for whoever she’s looking at because they won’t get a fair shake. Letitia James is a corrupt person.”

Asked by a reporter whether Hochul had confidence in James to probe the matter impartially, even after the New York prosecutor affirmed the allegations from the “young woman” in a post on her Facebook page days ago, the governor said she had “every confidence in our attorney general to do what she has always done: Look at the facts, examine the record and draw the proper conclusions.””

Campaign on promises to arrive at predetermined judgements against her political enemies?

    • R C Dean

Well, of course a drunk woman can be forcibly raped. They are pretending that the law system once a woman gets drunk, nobody can be prosecuted for raping her.

What the law says is more like “you are responsible for what you agree to after you get yourself sloshed”. Which has been the rule for ages. Can you imagine if you could breach a contract just by saying “I was drunk when I signed that”?

“Canada is giving paper straws to jailbirds across federal prisons for “safer snorting” of drugs such as cocaine, methamphetamine and heroin, according to a memo that went out to correctional officers…

“Using paper straws helps reduce harm by lowering the risk of cuts or tears inside the nose when compared to homemade or plastic straws,” reads the four-page memo from Correctional Service Canada, which oversees 43 federal prisons north of the border.

The woke nation is also handing out foil that is “stronger and thicker” than household foil “for safer smoking.””

At least there was a proper Big 10 game with proper Big 10 teams, and Northwestern properly kicked Penn State’s butt.

Back when Northwestern was the perennial underdog of the conference, I used to imagine that players were eager to be benched so they could study – not the playbook but their actual college courses.

  23. Pope Jimbo

We’ve been abandoned by the Feds! The local are inept! Won’t the Minnesoda state govt step in and save the homeless?!

An impressive piece of logic if I’ve ever read one. Local urban geographer is mad that Minneapolis and St. Paul are clearing out homeless encampments.

Two things can both be true. The first is that people with nowhere to go deserve refuge and to be treated with dignity. This is a matter of basic morality. The first question we must ask is, “Where will people go?” If there’s not a good answer, these government actions are irredeemable.

It’s also a fact that core cities and their residents should not bear the fiscal and personal costs of widespread poverty. People persisting in haphazard camps in Minneapolis and St. Paul today have come from all over the Upper Midwest. They end up on marginal land in the core cities because of the density of social services, social networks and transit access, making urban camps an obvious place of last resort. In other words, people in rural or suburban areas are part of this equation whether they recognize it or not.

For core cities, encampments generate hundreds of emergency calls per year, not to mention secondary issues around disinvestment or quality of life. These broad social costs are borne specifically by central cities, in their exploding budgets, vacant properties, nuisance crimes and the like. The people of Minneapolis and St. Paul, and their respective counties, should not be singled out to pay for a regional plague of poverty.

    • PieInTheSky

people with nowhere to go deserve refuge and to be treated with dignity – do all of them though?

      • rhywun

        No.

  24. Pope Jimbo

My local independent proggie rag has me so confused today about who exactly I should be listening to.

    Should it be Single Moms?

Voices Rising highlighted what’s possible for single moms when they have the resources necessary to thrive. Not only do their individual families succeed, but they also become leaders in their communities. The model of Voices Rising matters because conversations around economic mobility need to consider single-parent households.

Giving single moms the platform to voice their needs shouldn’t be unique to the Jeremiah Program. During Voices Rising, alumni moms said that being seen empowered them to push forward and go further in their careers and be seen in those spaces. Imagine if major policy discussions intentionally included single moms, not only to ensure their families’ needs are seen, but to recognize them for the leaders they can be. They’re a vital part of our communities, and our policies need to reflect that so Minnesota can be a place where these families don’t have to stand alone.

Yes, I am very tempted to let people who choose one of the sure fire methods of being poor be the leaders of society.

    • Pope Jimbo

      BUT …

I am also very interested in hearing about how indigenous leaders will save us from Climate Change.

Indigenous lands from Canada to Ecuador to Nepal are increasingly being hit by catastrophic storms, fires, and floods. Worse, these climate disasters often come one after the other as overlapping crises rather than isolated incidents. Still, despite the ongoing destruction, Indigenous peoples continue to prove that they have the knowledge and skills to respond, if only global powers will let them.

Even amid growing recognition by scientists and policymakers of the power of Indigenous expertise to respond to climate change, the key role that Indigenous governance plays in those knowledge systems has not received as much respect.

      * Hint: respect = $$$ from rich govts.

      • PieInTheSky

Indigenous expertise to respond to climate change – they gonna stop china and india from emitting carbon?

Of all the people who deserve to be forgotten completely, it’s Yoko Ono, and thank heavens for small favors. John Lennon is a close second.

XY, as demonstrated on the Zooms last night, is perfectly aware of who the Moody Blues are and I reminded him of his having played “Nights in White Satin” on repeat for 3 months straight when he was 11 while playing Farming Simulator. And he could do this because I loaded up the home cloud with all the music we owned and the kids tore through it like it was candy, which pleased me. He did say the Moody Blues are on his Spotify. He did NOT know who Duran Duran was, but DOES know who Motley Crue is (bc I’m his mother).

Rush, Led Zeppelin, Steely Dan, Yes, ELO, Earth Wind and Fire, Genesis, et al and and such are going to be the last bands standing.
