Sunday Morning Fall Is Here

One of the hazards of working with my kids is that they are always plotting ways to get hold of my fortune. I’m a thousandaire! I was coming up the steps from our cellar to the cafe kitchen, carrying a large box of fenugreek leaves, and just then the door swung open. It was 10b0t carrying a 5 gallon jug of hot oil, drained from our fryer. I could just about hear the wheels turning in his head with this wonderful opportunity in front of him. “Do I douse the old man or just push him backwards down the stairs?” He chose the latter, looks more like an accident and likely quicker. Fooled him, though, I lived through it although not without an impressive set of bumps and bruises.

Despite his failed attempt to off me, we still celebrate birthdays, including a guy willing to die for the Republicans; RAHeinlein’s spirit animal; a one-hit wonder; someone who could get away with having three tits on a woman; the one and true Mr. Waverly; the pride of the Catholic church; an eternal symbol of the Deep State’s corruption and amorality; Spudalicious’s doppelganger; and a guy whose face is on every iodine bottle.

My face is on every weekend edition of Links.

We’re still doing “mostly peaceful.”

“I’m from Pittsburgh, I’ve seen worse.”

Unintentional truth.

Turkey is a Serious country.

The next Glibs cruise?

Grandfatherly advice to the young: don’t make videos.

This would be much more entertaining if we gave them maces, broadswords, and flimsy shields.

What, the ACLU political, leftist, and antisemitic? Where’s my fainting couch?

“Common sense capitalist.” Riiiiight. Not that his opponent is any better.

Better idea: just smack them. Hard.

Upsetting the right people.

The title don’t lie. This is nuts.

No Muslim should be allowed residency in the US. Much less be allowed to run for as much as dog catcher.

      • Mojeaux

Dog catcher is not a job a Muslim would do.

      • rhywun

Or not a job you would want him to do.

Is anyone at The Statehouse File a member of the ACLU? Possibly Olivia O’Neal?

      • rhywun

I love that the ACLU is now grubbing for 19 dollars a month like all the charity commercials I see – Shriners, St. Jude’s, Tunnel to Towers, and on and on.

Earnest, sad faces fighting for truth and justice in today’s nightmare America. 🙄

“These prosecutions are morally nonsensical. They treat people who voluntarily consume drugs as helpless victims of supposed predators who gave them the drugs they wanted. By similar logic, bartenders and liquor store owners should be held criminally liable whenever a customer succumbs to alcohol poisoning or the long-term effects of heavy drinking. The main difference is the legal status of the drug, which is arbitrary, politically determined, and historically contingent. And while illegal drugs pose special hazards, that is a result of prohibition, which creates a black market where product composition is highly variable and unpredictable.”

    Saint Lula

By then, Lula was an icon as much as he was a retired head of state, the brain behind far-reaching social programs that had lifted swathes of the population out of poverty and facilitated access to education. During Lula’s second term, in 2009, then-President Barack Obama called him “the most popular politician on Earth.”

Even while in prison on charges he contested, Lula began plotting a return to office. Nineteen months later, the charges were overturned and Lula was released, ready to go after his new foil: far-right firebrand Jair Bolsonaro, whose uncouth populism and handling of the Covid-19 pandemic had shocked Brazil’s political and business establishment.

To win, Lula had to look beyond the traditional base of the Workers’ Party (known by its Brazilian initials as the PT) he had helped to establish in 1980, the dying days of Brazil’s military dictatorship. In a deft political maneuver, he picked a former rival from the center-right as his running mate, reassuring corporate leaders and capturing a powerful block of centrist parties in Congress.

Today, the world’s most successful left-of-center politician of the 21st century will appear on a presidential ballot again, for one last time. Lula now faces Flávio Bolsonaro, Jair’s son, in the second round of what is turning out to be the tightest presidential election in Brazil’s modern history, as he has struggled to update his old story to new times.

How can his flock forsake him in this time of great need? The Devil is once more at the gates of Heaven.

    A different breed of Democrat

For Senate candidate Hallie Shoffner, the most important political label she wears isn’t that she’s a Democrat. Or that she’s not a Republican. Instead, it’s that she is an Arkansan.

As a lunchtime crowd ate at Tailgater’s Burger Company Friday, Shoffner decried what she called a historically unproductive Congress driven by extreme voices in each party and pitched herself to receptive — if skeptical — voters as a candidate who would better serve their needs.

Arkansas is one of the most conservative states in the country, with nearly two out of three voters supporting President Trump in 2024 and Republican Sen. Tom Cotton in 2020.

Yes, NPR, “Trump voter” is a perfect proxy for “conservative”. They are completely indistinguishable.

Thank goodness NPR survived the Great Purge. Where would the nation be without them and their frantic cheerleading for Democrat-ocracy?

  24. The Late P Brooks

Shoffner is a multigenerational farmer who decided to shut down her family’s operation in 2025, citing financial headwinds from rising input costs and Trump administration tariff and trade policies. That in turn inspired her Senate run and influenced much of her campaign’s focus.

Sliding behind the wheel of a side-by-side utility vehicle, Shoffner takes off across the property and recounts her life story that led her away from the farm, into nonprofit work and back home when her dad got sick.

Just what the country needs. Another AWFL world-saver, come to rescue us from the dread disease of neoliberalism.

    • Threedoor

“I come from a place, a community, that died in my lifetime,” she said. “I was the last one left and I felt left behind. I felt like no one was really talking to me or talking about me. I felt like folks were making decisions about me, but without me, and ultimately they were rewriting the rules.”

Now, with record diesel prices, the war in Iran and tariffs, Shoffner said she believes that Arkansas voters of all stripes want something different. She’s also glad that the race hasn’t seen an influx of outside air support from national Democratic groups.

As we all know, she, as a junior Senator from Flyoverstan, will be perfectly positioned to fix all that in her first 100 days in office. Stand back, America, and give her room to spread her wings!
