Thursday Afternoon Links

by | Oct 22, 2026 | Daily Links, Florida | 58 comments

Here we are again, my friends. I thought yesterday was Thursday for a while. Its getting into busy season here. Halloween, Boy Three’s birthday, Mom’s birthday and Thanksgiving in four weeks. We’re dealing with a lot of shit here! And a bucket of fried chicken isn’t going to help. Maybe just some links!

I can’t tell whether this Florida Man was a giga-brain scammer or a complete moron. Probably the latter. Also, where does a cop get $200k to dump into fixing up a house?

Oh no, this person who is having a Federal case built against her no longer feels safe in her own home. Boo-hoo.

Just a nice old lady trying to make some generational wealth.

I really want to see this happen. Catching 2 rockets with chopsticks. With the first one, as Mr. Miyagi says, “beginner’s luck.” But if you can catch TWO?? That takes skill.

Brett L

Brett set out to find America, the real America, the America of strip malls and serial killers, of butthole waxing and kelp smoothies, of cocaine and maggots. He sought it in the most American part of America—Florida: swamp gas and fever dreams, where love arrives on a rickety boat and leaves when it doesn't have the money for its fourth abortion. Oh, where has Brett gone? He’s drinking at the neck of America’s wang, chewing its foreskin and working its shaft. Brett is becoming legend. Brett can never die. Brett can never die. Brett is America, facedown in his own patriotic puke: the red his blood, the white his stomach lining, and the cold, cold blue his gas station slushie, spiked with coconut rum and tetracycline.

where does a cop get $200k to dump into fixing up a house?

    The evidence locker.

    • EvilSheldon

Bro, have you seen what cops make these days?

      • Bobarian LMD

Why would you spend your own money on your criminal operation when you don’t have to?

      • Threedoor

        14 whole shifts a month!

      • Brochettaward

Like how else are they supposed to attract athletic specimens who are the best and brightest among us?

      • rhywun

The salary is probably not bad for Florida but the “20 year pension plan” is the real reason you’re signing up.

      • Threedoor

These pay scales explain the disposable income needed for all the full color tattoos.

Sguros maintained that he took possession of the property and acted because it was hazardous and he wanted to prevent criminal activity and [other] people from squatting, the affidavit said.

Totality of circumstances, Bro. Do you even surf?

Just a nice old lady trying to make some generational wealth.

That will likely be a short life sentence.

    • Brochettaward

I despise Graham and couldn’t care less about his “legacy,” but it’s definitely cowardly bullshit to put names and faces to these accusations after the guy is dead and couldn’t defend himself even if they were 100% bullshit.

I don’t think he has anyone who would bother to do it besides his sister.

    • Threedoor

Barney Frank was 100% in on that.

      • slumbrew

Totally different! Barney’s boyfriend was running the escorts out of their shared home, Barney wasn’t paying for it himself.

      • Threedoor

Oh you know he got a cut.
        Or a slice.

    • Threedoor

      It’s easy to make allegations.

“I’m Luke and I had sex with Nancy Pelosi. She gave me $600 and spoon fed me Ben and Jerry’s while calling me a bad boy.”

      • Brochettaward

Not gonna lie I’d be down for that for that kind of money. I feel fairly certain that Nancy likes to abuse her “bad boys” a bit, but I’d have a surcharge for every mark she leaves.

      • Threedoor

But the things she had me do with the fudge fish in the Phish Food would give most men PTSD.

“In and out. In and out. Swallow, appropriate this!”

It also looks like in 2000 in AZ the age of consent was 16. My Google fu is not good though.

    *Cont’d from earlier

Robert Weissman, who is co-president of watchdog group Public Citizen, said the situation is an “extreme danger″ that raises antitrust and security concerns around Musk’s ability to control a “crucial means of communication.”

“People worry about the political, as well as economic, impacts of oligarchy, and this is it,” Weissman said in an interview. “It’s not just that Musk can drown out other speakers, he can close down communications in a national security context for a country. No person should have that ability or power.”

Only Joe Biden should have the power to unilaterally silence people we don’t like. Or Ursula von der Leyen.

    • kinnath

he can close down communications in a national security context for a country.

No he can’t you stupid cunt. If a country is stupid enough to sole-source is communications to a commercial enterprise, then they are exposed to total loss of com if the service is discontinued (for any reason).

Sguros filed a complaint against the real estate company in February, saying in filings that he discovered West in the home while he was on duty and detailing how he subsequently began to clean, secure and invest in the property. However, he never established in his records that he came to be involved in the home through a purchase, lease, probate appointment, deed or relationship with West’s heirs, the arrest affidavit said.

In the civil litigation, Sguros sought more than $200,000 for the work he said he performed on the home, the affidavit said.

  7. Brochettaward

I am getting rather annoyed with the rather flippant uses of one of my (many well earned!) titles around here.

    • Ted S.

I don’t think we’re using the term “asshole” flippantly at all.

      • Bobarian LMD

I don’t think “flippant” is a synonym for accurate.

  8. The Late P Brooks

If Musk didn’t have the ability to fund his crazy space fantasies (largely) out of pocket, could Starlink ever have been created?

How would the Ukrainians be communicating? Tin cans and string? Viet Nam surplus walkie talkies?

    • Threedoor

Rural fibre optic grants of course.

Like what are being ran adjacent to my place over the course of the last year. 90% of which is horizontally bored rather than trenched. And no one is going to use it. Massive boondoggle.

I’m already voting for the cap, you don’t need to sell me on it

The day Gov. Kelly Ayotte signed the new law allowing voters to cap local property taxes, the head of the state’s largest teachers union pledged to oppose the tax cap.

“NEA-New Hampshire will work to ensure every Granite Stater knows how these ballot measures will harm their local public school before they vote in November,” said union president Megan Tuttle.

But Tuttle’s union may have gone too far, violating state election laws in its determined effort to block tax caps.

An election law complaint filed Wednesday alleges NEA-New Hampshire and the NEA-NH Fund for Strong Public Schools failed to comply with disclosure and campaign finance requirements while promoting a “VOTE NO ON QUESTION 2” campaign.

    • Threedoor

      “harm their local public school”

Want the damn things razed during an NEA meeting.

    • Rat on a train

Cap the rate or the assessment?

      • DEG

Rate. But only for school taxes. There is also a separate cap of 6% for administrative costs. The caps can be overriden by a supermajority vote.

Assessments are required to be to market. Reassessment is every five years. My town just went through its “every five year reassessment”. The assessments are pretty close to market though in my neighborhood it is easy since we’ve had some sales in the last few months.

      • DEG

        err… Local school tax.

There are four components to NH property taxes: municipal, local school, county, and statewide property tax. The statewide property tax is earmarked for the state’s education trust fund. The first three are calculated based on approved spending and assessments. I am not sure how the statewide property tax is actually calculated. My snarky take is magic, but there is probably an overly complicated formula somewhere in state law.

      • Threedoor

        We have several more layers.

        Port district
        Road district
        Federal road
        Federal bridge
        Library
And the oops we got sued and have to refund the power company and move the charges to you “judgment”

      • UnCivilServant

Well crap, I don’t feel so bad – I’ve got city, and school property taxes, and a water bill that’s at least partially based on usage.

Is the claim of $500/month electricity bills for Mason and Weitz to live in a 300 square foot room with one air conditioner remotely credible?

    Anonymous but knowledgeable sources

The person, who spoke to NPR on condition of anonymity to discuss the preparations, said Israel had initially planned to strike Iran in mid-October, about two weeks before Israeli elections on Oct. 27, but President Trump objected.

According to the person briefed, the U.S. is now amassing forces in the region to be ready to attack by early November, after the U.S. midterm elections, but that these preparations could also be part of a campaign to pressure Iran to reach a diplomatic deal.

Let’s get that on the ballot, shall we?

    • Rat on a train

Ok, but only those currently in service can vote because I’ve been told you aren’t allowed to have an opinion if it doesn’t directly effect you.

I got bored and told jokes to an AI and asked for some in return. Specifically about human-computer interaction. The answer reminded me of you guys.

Alright, let me try to construct something original about human-computer interaction:

**Why did the human keep asking the computer the same question over and over?**
Because they hadn’t tried turning it off and on again yet.

    Or here’s another angle:

**A human asked their computer, “Do you understand me?” The computer said, “I process your input and generate contextually appropriate responses.” The human said, “So that’s a no?”**

    Or maybe:

**Humans spend all day teaching computers to think like humans, and computers spend all day trying to figure out why humans don’t just read the error message.**
