Saturday Morning Party On Links

by | Nov 7, 2026 | Daily Links | 107 comments

One of our local businesses is having an anniversary party tonight. It’s the kind of place I call a “Chick Store,” crammed with knick-knacks, candles, cards, pottery, that kind of thing. The woman who runs it is delightful and fun, but she’s a standard-issue crazy academic socialist. Nonetheless, I love her dearly, and want her to succeed. So I got drafted into pouring wine for the hordes of post-menopausal AWFLs, gender goblins, and college lesbians. I can’t wait to overhear some of the conversations- I understand there was an election or something this week that they all seem to be giddy about.

But just because there was an election doesn’t mean there aren’t birthdays. There are, including the original Captain Kangaroo; a woman with a very healthy glow; a guy who was picky right up to the end; a guy who always seemed to be a bit scattered; an exemplar of French windiness; the original televangelist, Billy Sunday without the antisemitism; a guy whom I wish modern pitchers would emulate; one of my favorite singer/songwriters who always gets negative reactions when I use her for Old Guy Music; and a child star whom we’ve seen naked.

And I am exposed by Links.

The grift goes next-level.

Well, this is a fabulously dumb idea.

I still say that Letters of Marque and Reprisal ought to be front and center in our foreign policy.

That cunt couldn’t fucking wait.

Europe is proud of its diversity.

Europe is proud of its diversity.

Neo-Puritanism is back with a vengeance.

This would not be the worst choice. Hopefully he won’t follow the Ventura path and go absolutely Coocoo for Cocoa Puffs.

Divorce your shrew wife. Jane Eyre sucks.

Goose. Gander.

This will absolutely happen here with President Ocasio-Cortez.

It will not be missed.

This is just as pure fun as jazz gets. Pianists and drummers switching out mid-chorus, the crazy great recorder player I featured a week or two ago switching between trombone, trumpet, and… bagpipes? This really has it all. And what I loved most was the always-impeccably-dressed Joe Farnsworth channeling that cool, precise Ed O’Shaughnessy vibe.

    Happy birthday Burleigh Grimes!

  2. rhywun

That pic LOL. I’m not sure if it’s AI or a snapshot from one of the dozens of stores exactly like it in downtown Ithaca.

    • Ted S.

It can’t be real, since this sort of woman normally drinks sickeningly sweet whites like Moscato.

      Or worse, white zin.

    • Old Man With Candy

It’s AI, but it’s pretty perfect.

Shockingly, the AWFL wine sales have not been sweet stuff. Biggest sellers are a dry Prosecco, Beaujolais Blanc (unoaked Chardonnay), and a Finger Lakes Cabernet Franc.

I’m richly enjoying that asshole openly displaying what a repellent POS he is. I hope his voters are proud of themselves. The non-Arab ones, anyway.

    • Common Tater

Unless accidentally, we’re stuck with this asshole for at least six years.

      • rhywun

Yeah I suppose the enjoyment will wear off in about a week. He definitely fancies himself the center of the universe and is not. going. to. shut. up.

“Boys are feeling alienated. The solution is to tell them even harder that they’re broken and need us to fix them!”

    • Nephilium

      Why don’t boys read more?

No! We mean the books we like! Not this masculine garbage!

    • Tonio

The solution is to tell them even harder that they’re broken and need us to fix them!

Nailed it. There is a definite war against boys, men, and normal masculine behavior. I feel sorry for the boys growing up today, and for the non-self-emasculated straight men.

There are publishing houses trying to fill the need for fiction and history that appeals to boys, but those books will probably never get assigned and prog teachers probably have lists of wrongthink titles so they can downgrade book reports about those books.

      • Tonio

Addendum. The Fat Electrician, whose history videos are often linked to by Not Adahn, is the author of a series of history books for boys. The publisher, Brave books, is a little too religious for my tastes (as a gift-giver) but still solid.

      • Threedoor

        Toino the point of

Hatchet is a Newberry award winner.

All those books are depressing as hell. Divorce death, trauma, parental alienation. That schools push them in kids is the real problem. Traumatize kids with adult problems rather than introducing kids to books filled with wonder, adventure, and triumph.

I have a feeling the Dems in general are going to overreach themselves into a wave of defeat in two years. OK, a “hope”.

    • R C Dean

I’ll probably keep beating this drum until you are sick of it, but the Dems control the election machinery in enough states now that I doubt we’ll see a red wave in two years. In fact, I’m willing to bet they overreach AND sweep the board in 2028. Not because the voters want them, but because that’s how the ballots will add up.

Being too young to be familiar with Jim Kaat, what specifically do you want modern pitchers to emulate? Being able to throw more than 100 pitches at a time? Being able to work more than once a week? Having a repertoire beyond a max effort fastball? Taking less than 25 seconds between pitches?

    • Old Man With Candy

The last. Kaat didn’t fuck around; got the ball back from the catcher and immediately started winding up.

The whole free childcare thing is such an obvious pipeline for grift and fraud. We have it here in NM. They somehow came up with nearly a billion dollars for it, if memory serves. In fucking NM.

    • rhywun

It’s the perfect grift. If your jurisdiction is already packed with freeloaders why on earth would they vote against yet another handout. And it’s not like they want to take care of their own damn children.

      • R C Dean

Who said there will be any children taken care of?

      • Tonio

“Who said there will be any children taken care of?”

Spot on. But it’s the IDEA of providing childcare that sells these programs. And remember that one of the left’s favorite phrases for justifying spending is “as long as it helps one [person].”

The blubbering Big Apple resident Timothy Murphy is seeing red over the Gray Lady’s coverage of the war in Gaza, which he claims is “hoodwinking” readers by covering up “Israel’s genocide.”

Stalinist reforms will free the housing market

The revolution in American housing politics keeps picking up speed.

This week’s victories by Nithya Raman and Janeese Lewis George in mayoral races in Los Angeles and Washington D.C., add to a growing cadre of elected officials pushing for both robust renter protections and more homebuilding.

The candidates’ novel pairing of pro-tenant and pro-development policies have made for strange bedfellows, uniting factions of theurban left that have warred for more than a decade as housing costs in cities have skyrocketed. The socialist camp has blamed big real estate and argued the only path to affordability lies in rent restrictions and publicly owned housing. The YIMBY movement, short for Yes In My Back Yard, has pointed the finger at zoning rules and other development restrictions and contends a shortage of housing overall is the root of the problem.

Fucking incentives- how do they work?

    • R C Dean

If I’m following, the bold new plan is to make it easier to build housing that the government will make sure you lose money on.

  26. R C Dean

Well, this is a fabulously dumb idea.

The important thing is that nobody in a position of power learn a single thing, ever, no matter how many times its pounded into their thick skulls.

  27. The Late P Brooks

In Los Angeles, Raman, who will leave her current seat on the City Council to become mayor, has delighted or angered various camps — sometimes at the same time — as she led the charge to tighten LA’s rent control restrictions while also proposing to cut a tax on multifamily development.

On the campaign trail, Raman promised to push for development in single-family-home neighborhoods that have historically been off limits to growth, reform permitting practices and create a new city department to handle tenant complaints.

At her election night party Tuesday, Raman cast her platform as common sense.

“We have a vision for our city, one where the people who make this city extraordinary can afford a home,” Raman said. “It’s a simple vision. It doesn’t feel radical to me.”

She has a blank canvas to work with in Pacific Palisades. Just as soon as she finds a means to dispossess the current burned out property owners.

Prevent them from clearing and rebuilding the property and then fine them for not rebuilding. After that, seizure for unpaid fines.
