The rumors that I’m actually sitting around the house in my underwear, drinking wine and listening to music or out for a pleasant bike ride instead of doing the work and chores that have been piling up because I’ve been gone weekends are all scurrilous lies. Lies, I tell you! I’m actually being very responsible and not having any fun at all, nossir. And that’s exactly what I’ve told NPR Lady. See, if she were here, we’d be sitting around the house in our underwear, drinking wine and listening to music or out for a pleasant bike ride. But she’s not, so I’m adulting. That’s the official story in case she asks any of you. Right?

Birthdays today are numerous and excellent, including The Big Red Bird; a true badass who has been unfairly maligned; the inspiration for many Jewsdays; a guy who didn’t know when to stop writing and say “The End”; a guy who was about 85 years ahead of his time with the Basement Strategy; the Adolf Eichmann of poultry; arguably the best drummer to ever hold two sticks; a guy who could have been fishing; a guy responsible for football’s finest moment; one of two sisters who often gave Young Man With Candy uncontrollable erections*; a guy with rather unusual preferences in blowjobs; one of the most truly annoying performers out there and a guarantee of a shitty movie; and an actress who played insufferable perfectly.

*Punchline: SP knew her and made sure we never met.

Let’s Link, then I’ll get busy.

Woodchipper. With extreme prejudice. At least a lot of LE agencies are saying they won’t go along, a rare moment of accord with the cops.

The Mafia gets slightly restricted. Slightly. Remember this the next time you hear Progs grumbling about “creeping authoritarianism.”

The Progs’ new favorite Team Red guy pounds the only drum he’s got. I still love the description by a woman I dated for a few months who worked for him: “Assclown.”

Waiting for NPR to blame the climate crisis.

Speaking of the climate crisis…

A hilariously clumsy attempt at a hatchet job.

Old Guy Music is a birthday boy playing one of my favorite bop standards. And Richard Davis, my favorite hard bop bassist (and my prof when I took History of Jazz at UW many years ago).

We need a Constitutional Amendment that says passing a law/EO/whatever that is later found to be unconstitutional results in immediate removal from office for anyone who voted for it or signed it into law, by virtue of each person having violated their oath of office.

      • Zwak says the real is not governable, but self-governing.

Especially when she openly states that she knows it’s unconstitutional! That should be eligible for lawsuits againster personally, but alas.

      • rhywun

But it’s an emergency! Even though she admits knowing that criminals don’t follow the law! Never the less something must be done and this is something!

      • Chafed

That’s almost literally what she said. Her lack of insight is stunning.

      • Rebel Scum

        We need a Constitutional Amendment

Won’t matter. What we really need is Americans to rekindle a love for defiance.

β€œWhile I understand and appreciate the urgency, the temporary ban challenges the foundation of our constitution, which I swore an oath to uphold,” Allen said. β€œI am wary of placing my deputies in positions that could lead to civil liability conflicts, as well as the potential risks posed by prohibiting law-abiding citizens from their constitutional right to self-defense.”

We need to bring back public hangings.

Enforcing the governor’s order also could put Albuquerque police in a difficult position with the U.S. Department of Justice regarding a police reform settlement, said police spokesman Gilbert Gallegos.

β€œAll of those are unsettled questions,” he said late Friday.

They really aren’t. It was settled in 1791. Perhaps you’ve heard.

      • prolefeed

Not sure why you are calling for public hangings for the guy diplomatically saying her order is unconstitutional and he’s not gonna order his deputies to enforce it for her.

      • Gustave Lytton

How about that same guy arresting her for her illegal actions?

  3. Fourscore

MN Gov Walz’s ears perked up after hearing NM gov’s proposal. Now with hunting season upon us seems like a good time to ban open carry.

    • Zwak says the real is not governable, but self-governing.

We have gone and pissed off every oil producing nation over the last few years, it’s no wonder that they are lining up to sell to anyone else.

      • rhywun

I’m looking for a humorous way to tie this in with Joe’s secret Iran deal and coming up short it’s all so depressing.

      • Fatty Bolger

Not that we would even need them, if we weren’t kneecapping our own production capabilities.

A bit of a mandarin, maybe?

  6. Brawndo

I read that Milei is a threat to democracy. I was already sold on the guy, but now I like him even more

    • Pat

I was sold at the Roger Moore era Bond villain mutton chops.

      • Brawndo

Unpopular opinion, but Roger Moore is the second best Bond, only slightly outclassed by Timothy Dalton. Pierce Brosnan isn’t bad either.

      • Pat

I, too, am a Dalton contrarian, but I’m afraid Roger Moore is a bridge too far. Brosnan wasn’t bad in the role, he was just very unfortunate with the scripts he got to play.

      • Chafed

Both Dalton and Brosnan got stuck with mediocre to bad scripts.

      • Gustave Lytton

On the other hand, Dalton was stuck with Maryam d’Abo…

      • Zwak says the real is not governable, but self-governing.

Indeed. George Lazenby was the best bond.

      • Gustave Lytton

        Certainly the best Bond girl.

      • Fatty Bolger

I do have a soft spot for Moore, because he’s the Bond of my childhood. Dalton and Brosnan, however… blech and bland, respectively. I appreciate what Dalton was trying to do, but it just didn’t work. At all.

      • Zwak says the real is not governable, but self-governing.

Brosnan is best in The Long Good Friday, but that movie is better than any Bond film.

      • Suthenboy

What is wrong with you people?

        Sean Connery. That is all.

      • Tundra

You’re all wrong. Craig is best and Skyfall is the best movie

      • R.J.

Connery and Craig are #1 and 2. Moore’s movies merely documented the downfall of Western film.

      • Chafed

There’s the movie wisdom I was looking for.

      • MikeS

        RJ nails it.

Moore did exactly what was asked of him. And he did it well.

      • KSuellington

Not at all. The 70’s were one of the golden ears of films. All kinds of great stuff came out of that era.

      • MikeS

Fair enough, but the Moore Bond films were not part of that great stuff.

      • MikeS

They’re fun, for sure. Just not “great”.

      • KSuellington

I like all of the Bonds actually, even though a number of the movies themselves weren’t that great. Connery was indisputably the best though, there really is no other sensible take. Moore gets lots of shit, but I actually dig his slightly tongue in cheek take on Bond and a couple of his ones were among the most entertaining of all the films. Lazenby was good, and that was one of the best Bond movies. Dalton’s first was very good, and he brought a needed change. Brosnan brought some style, mostly fairly bad scripts tho, but he is my (distant) cousin so I can’t lay it on him. Craig’s take has been good, and a couple of the best films of the series have come during his run. I’m not looking forward to the next non binary, dwarf person of colour Bond.

      • DrOtto

I’m going on record as stating I don’t much care for James Bond films. I’ve seen them and some are better than others, but just not a fan. I did like Roger Moore spoofing Bond in Cannonball Run. “You know your problem mother? You’re too Jewish.” And that wasn’t a very good movie either, but had it’s moments.

      • Rebel Scum

between regular conservatism and Trump/Vivek style Republicanism

If my choice is neo-cons or 60s conservative/JFK Democrat, I’ll take the latter.

    • MikeS

Christie is just as big a piece of shit as Trump, but at least the guy is going after Trump. The rest of the field is running against him, and yet won’t dare criticize him for anything.

      • Lachowsky

I’d say Christie is a bigger piece of shit. At least if we are talking total volume.

      • MikeS

        Fair point.

      • Fourscore

By the pound though, Christie would be the cheapest president money could buy

      • Brawndo

      • MikeS

        LOL. OK

      • Brawndo

Microsoft ending third-party printer driver support is good news for you

Microsoft revealed in a new document that it will no longer service third-party printer drivers on devices that use Windows OS, including Windows 11.

According the article, Microsoft will allow IPP Class Driver and Mopria-compliant print devices, the latter of which got native with Windows 10 version 21H2. These will be supported instead of manufacturer-made drivers via Windows Update. This means that printer manufacturers won’t have to provide dedicated drivers, which is already a huge benefit to them.

On the consumer end, manufacturers can still offer print customization via Microsoft Store apps. Thanks to the much more streamlined and standardized approach to drivers, another consumer benefit is that there will be plenty of performance and reliability improvements alongside broad compatibility across Windows versions and editions.

Yeah, because if there’s one thing Microsoft is known for, it’s the performance and reliability of its generic drivers…

    • Robonerfherder

      Almost as good as Apple’s

      • Pat

Apple has no excuse either, since they only support a relative handful of hardware from their own walled garden. Although, loathe as I am to give them credit, CUPS is the best thing to happen to printing in 50 years.

      • Robonerfherder

Speaking of computers, one of my laptop’s memory sticks shit the bed this morning. I guess I didn’t change the oil soon enough.

      • Robonerfherder

Not a huge deal for the moment, but I despise pagefiles on hard drives.

      • Robonerfherder

And it’s not the stick, it’s the board.

Gave up trying to set up the fucking thing on Windows when I thought I needed to print something recently.

      • slumbrew

CUPS wasn’t created by Apple but, yes, kudos for getting behind it (and hiring the creator)

      • Grosspatzer

“CUPS is the best thing to happen to printing in 50 years.”

Can confirm. On Linux these days, setup involves… nothing. “Oh look, there’s my printer!”

Belated shout-out to Beau Knott re: The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Bank (linked near the end of the 1520 Main post’s comments): TT & I, in our dippy little trio, used to cover this delightful ditty in a mash-up with this slightly better-known thematically-similar song. Good times.

Thank you. We now return you to your regular programming.

New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham on Friday issued an emergency order suspending the right to carry firearms in public across Albuquerque and the surrounding county for at least 30 days in response to a spate of gun violence.

This should be ignored by citizens and civilian law enforcement as it is in no way even close to being constitutional.

    Speaking of the climate crisis…

I see that Hurricane Lee (the most dangerous climate change storm evar) has been downgraded and looks to be shaping up to turn north between the Carolinas and Bermuda, likely remaining at sea (unless something changes). But I’m sure we still need to freak out about it, and give up all our prosperity and freedom for Gaia because apparently hurricanes never happened before the industrial revolution.

A crazed man yelling β€œAllahu Akbar” tried to open a door in the middle of a flight from Israel to England Monday β€” before a brave passenger stepped up and tackled him.

Victor Troboloni, an Albanian who was on his way to visit his ailing mother in London, grabbed the hulking, unidentified attacker and held him down with other passengers while crew members zip-tied him.

Old Guy music is good. I had the pleasure of catching a set of Elvin with his sextet at the Vanguard in the early seventies. If you closed your eyes you’d swear there were two or three drummers playing. Fantastic.

Speaking of climate change, we had some badass storms yesterday. Temporarily crashed the computers at the hospital where I spent the day, flooded my backyard to within 20′ of the basement door, and 1″ hail. Internet and phone are still out.

  20. Rebel Scum

Didn’t this guy basically admit to murder?

A Glenfield, North Dakota, man is sentenced to five years in prison for his involvement in the death of an 18-year-old last September.

A judge handed down the sentence for Shannon Brandt on Friday, September 8. Brandt was given credit for 356 already served behind bars. His five-year sentence will be followed by three years of supervised probation.

Brandt’s lawyer, Mark Friese, told Valley News Live following the sentencing, β€œShannon is pleased that the matter is concluded and hopes those affected can begin to heal.”

Brandt, 42, pleaded guilty to manslaughter in May 2023 for running over 18-year-old Cayler Ellingson after a street dance in McHenry, North Dakota in September 2022.

Kill a kid for his politics: 5 years
    Offend the state: 22 years.

    • MikeS

No. The media -and dumbass Donny- vastly jumped the gun on this story. The kid was a little bully and was threatening to get his buddies and kick the guy’s ass. He panicked and ran the kid over.

      • MikeS

And I see the Gateway Pundit is still banging the drum. They’re either lazy or lying for clicks.

      • Rebel Scum

He panicked and ran the kid over.

Seems that he was safe once in his car.

      • MikeS

I’m not defending the guy. I’m saying the narrative that he ran the kid over for being Republican is bullshit and was debunked within a couple days. But certain people aren’t interested in the details if it doesn’t feed their narrative.

      • Chafed

Thanks for clarifying. I like to know the truth about these stories. Far too often, important context is left out.

      • MikeS

It all stemmed from an early Highway Patrol report. It said that the driver claimed he was afraid of the kid because he was a Republican Extremistβ„’. As I understand it, that is a mischaracterization by NDHP of one comment in the long, rambling call the driver made to 911. At one point he said that the kid was on his phone to friends to come beat up the driver and he heard the kid “say something” about a Republican Extremistβ„’ group. That’s it.

It was small town drama gone too far. There was at least some minor history between the two families, and everyone involved was drunk, (kid was 0.20% and the driver was 0.08%). The State’s Attorney bowed to pressure and filed murder charges…and then later dropped them when none of the facts would back it up. The politics of the people involved (as far as I ever read) was never brought up in trial.

This story never should have made it out of North Dakota. But, team politics demands that narratives be fed, damn the facts.

      • Gustave Lytton

Thank you MikeS for doing this.

    Momentum building

House Oversight and Accountability Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) said Thursday that he thinks there are enough votes in the House to open an impeachment inquiry of President Biden, predicting the vote will be held in the middle of this month.

β€œI do believe that we have the votes for impeachment inquiry,” Comer said in an interview on Newsmax.

Momentum has been building among House Republicans to hold a vote on an impeachment inquiry into the president. So far, investigations into Biden and his family have not implicated the president in any illegal activity, but Comer and other House GOP leaders argue an impeachment inquiry would provide the necessary tools to properly investigate.

Whatever. Impeach the motherfucker for defrauding the American people with his “Inflation Reduction Act”.

If they are smart, they will conduct a real investigation. There is a good chance there are documents showing Hunter and Joe have intertwined finances. There is a good chance they can get credible testimony of DOJ or US Attorneys deliberately interfering in investigations of Hunter. If, and this is a big if, they are disciplined, then they can probably do a lot of damage to Team Blue.

The Big Guy’s 10% must be sloshing around somewhere. Find it and determine if he paid taxes on it.
After all, the IRS just announced it was going after millionaires who didn’t pay their “fair share.”

      • Chafed

Hunter has complained in the past that he had to give half his income to his father. There are records to be found.

        That’s a big “if”.

Missed a few threads the last few days due to timing – reading at work…

Re: Coast Guard. They can operate up to 200 miles offshore because that’s still the US Exclusive Economic Zone (ie. fishing rights, etc). That includes provinces/protectorates like the Marianas and Guam. As far as Law Enforcement counter drug stuff off the coast in Central/South America, I think those are partnerships with regional governments. When we had the coasties embarked, there were constant communications with different embassies, etc if we were chasing folks, etc.

Need to get around to reading classic Mahan, but as far as the Navy and force projection…there is a greater need for a Navy with respect to the global commons and protecting the sea lanes of communication (SELOC) – if you recall, some of our first major engagements were against the Barbary Pirates (“Millions for defense, not one cent for tribute”) to protect our citizens commercial endeavors and their property.

I can see a libertarian argument for private security (although to put it in perspective, running navy/CG equivalent ships has a vastly higher capital requirement than maintaining a private land-based security force), but unless you have a guarantee that other governments won’t interfere, there’s a distinct limitation in the scope of support that can be provided. (I had an econ professor at UNC-CH who would rag on everyone in class, but when I spoke to him privately later in the year, turned out he was type of libertarian who believed the the USCG should be funded by folks who owned boats ;p).

Wouldn’t Trump do better to pick a popular someone from a swing state that he needs to carry? Maybe he’s already alienated popular GOP figures in those swing states.

I think y’all are missing something important. I dont think Grisham understands what she is accomplishing.
Grisham openly admits that the ban is illegal
Grisham openly admits that the ban will not be followed by criminals
What she isn’t saying and probably doesn’t understand is that crime will rise, perhaps dramatically.

She is presenting us with the best anti-gun grabber argument ever.

    Gun grabbers are criminals.
Gun grabbers don’t give a flea’s turd about crime or citizen’s safety
They imagine a future with a boot stamping on a human face – forever. That is their end goal.

    • Chafed

What part of that do you think we missed?

    State approved speech

In a complaint filed in federal court in Sacramento, California, X said the law’s “true intent” was to pressure social media companies into eliminating content the state found objectionable.

By doing so, California is forcing companies to adopt the state’s views on politically charged issues, “a form of compelled speech in and of itself,” X said.

After buying Twitter for $44 billion last October, Musk, a self-described free speech absolutist, laid off many employees responsible for monitoring and regulating content, and restored some accounts that prior management had banned.

The Anti-Defamation League and the Center for Countering Digital Hate have documented increases in the volume of hate speech on X targeting Jews, Black people, gay men and trans people since Musk took over.

We’ll tell you whom you are permitted to hate.

Oh, bullshit. Views of “hate speech” have gone down. There might be a bit more of it, but fewer people see it.

“Two transgender cyclists sparked backlash after hammering biological female competitors to take gold medals at two separate championships – with one previously in a ‘throuple’ with another trans athlete caught shoving a female competitor in 2022.

Evelyn Williamson and Tessa Johnson, who were both born biologically male and transitioned to female before embarking on their run of cycling dominance, were seen arm in arm atop the podium as they celebrated victory in a relay race last week at the Illinois state championships.

The cycling duo’s controversial win on August 31 came days after they also won the Racing-Athletic Relay Cross in Chicago on August 27 – competing under the team name ‘TS-ESTRODOLLS’ in reference to the female hormone estrogen.”

I think she knows exactly what she is doing. She is making self defense illegal, which is part of the fundamental objective of gun control.

“Whitfield spoke out to condemn the waitress’ actions, feeling that he and Hector were victims of blatant racial profiling.

He described how he and his driving partner were initially seated and given menus as expected, and the server even handed him a glass of orange juice that he ordered.

But when Hector went for a shower as he waited at the table, Whitfield said the situation dawned on him.”

Also how did he get her attention? Just another thing left out of the story.

    • Fatty Bolger

Well… probably not. When my daughter was a hostess at a popular chain restaurant, one of the more brazen waitresses went so far as to ask her not to seat black people at her tables. Because they don’t usually tip. Of course my daughter told her to get lost, but she also admitted the stereotype is pretty true. She always gave 100% regardless and never let any pre-judgements change the level of service she provided when she was waitressing, but not everybody is like that.

AB 587 requires social media companies with at least $100 million of gross annual revenue to issue semiannual reports that describe their content moderation practices, and provide data on the numbers of objectionable posts and how they were addressed.

The law also requires companies to provide copies of their terms of service. Failure to comply risks civil fines of up to $15,000 per violation per day.

Gavin Newsom, California’s Democratic governor, signed the law last September, saying the state would not let social media be “weaponized” to spread hate and disinformation.

That doesn’t sound like it was written with a single specific target in mind.

    News deserts

Some of the biggest names in American philanthropy have joined forces to spend at least $500 million over five years to revitalize the coverage of local news in places where it has waned.

Led by the Chicago-based MacArthur Foundation, the new initiative, called Press Forward, seeks to nurture and sustain new models for funding journalism as the industry has come under severe financial pressures. In its announcement Thursday, the group of more than 20 charitable organizations noted that about a fifth of the nation live in so-called “news deserts” with little or no reliable coverage of major local developments.

“There is a crisis in local news,” says John Palfrey, president of the MacArthur Foundation. “The fact that so many newspapers are going out of business, that there are so many news deserts across America, that it poses such a threat to our democracy [means] that we had to do something at scale to be helpful.”

Penny Abernathy, a visiting journalism professor at Northwestern University who studies the local news industry, has found that 2,500 newspapers β€” more than a quarter in the U.S. β€” have gone out of business since 2005. Such a loss is accompanied by a rise in corporate and government corruption and a drop in voter participation, research indicates. Misinformation can arise from outlets that appear to offer the news yet have hidden agendas.

Just the straight up facts. Like the New York Times.

  39. The Late P Brooks

“As some things go away, other things are cropping up,” Palfrey says. “We feel that we can both support very strong existing organizations and efforts and we can help feed the next generation of sustainable news organizations.” First grants are to be awarded later this year.

Nothing says “sustainable” like being unable to continue without outside charity.

    • Chafed

And nothing says objective like taking outside money.
