¡Martes por la tarde, enlaces mexicanos!

So I went to see Dune part Deux over the weekend, and this is the second time I saw it.  The first time was with the wife two weekends ago, but my oldest son showed no interest.  So I just forced him to go.  My review is as follows:

You know what happens…They know you know what happens…You know, they know, you know what happens…So they fuck with it anyways to suit a “modern” audience.

You try getting a date wearing a snot valve.

It was inevitable it would deviate from the books.  The biggest complaints I’ve heard was 1) turning Chani into some sort of girl boss she wasn’t at all in the books, and isn’t even attractive and 2) the Harkonens were supposed to be totally gay.  So which is going to get the most complaints from the mob by being faithful to canon?  I’m going to be honest but making the Harkonens both ruthless and gay would probably be a bigger issue.  It really could’ve been worse but it only offends Dune nerds, who aren’t nearly as obnoxious as other Sci-Fi communities.  I’ll let you pick your own example.

It looks like the white woman named Steinbaum is cruising into Mexico’s June election.  Not sure how well this will be received by feminists on this side of the border when Mexico beats the US to the punch electing president girl boss.

Mexico City facing a severe water shortage.  Cue the Montezuma’s Revenge jokes.

How the Texan plan works:  1) they must physically see person cross illegally. 2) arrest them.  Any questions?

Yeah…no. Just watch the biopic starring Salma Hayek. It has nudity,

The US State Department denies involvement in the current protests in Cuba.  I’m inclined to believe them, as they most likely want the communists to succeed.

I’m sure it exists and I’m not looking that hard, but when I looked up news for Haiti I could only find it quickly on BBC and Al Jazeera.  Not on a US media site. Weird.

Bolsonaro now facing charges for (get this) falsifying his own COVID19 vaccine records.

I’m stuck looking for SOC2 reports today, so I’m going to play this.

” I’m going to be honest but making the Harkonens both ruthless and gay would probably be a bigger issue. ”

Remember when lesbians protested theaters over Basic Instinct?

    • Not Adahn

      Actually, no.

      • SDF-7

I’m with you — but I could see it happening “How dare you associate us with serial killers!” or something.

As if every community can’t have psychopaths…..

        • Mojeaux

Had a reader cuss me out because I made a woman the villain.

          • Dr. Fronkensteen

But if you made her the heroine you would be saying women being the fairer sex can only be noble and pure, which is sexist in its own way.

            • Mojeaux

My reader was a FEMINIST, dammit!

I have a vague recollection of someone asking some black actor when Hollywood would be “post-racial” (my word, can’t remember the question), and the actor said, “When black men can be villains.”

I’m not sure how well that’s turned out now that we’re back into segregation, but my reader was super upset that of all the nefarious characters I had, it was the woman who was most villainous of all.

Maybe she was mad because the woman villain wasn’t carrying her own water? That she was the hand up her puppet’s ass? I dunno. I was like, have you NEVER heard of Poison Ivy, Cruella de Vil, and every step/mother figure in every fairy tale ever?

            That’s a dick move.

        • rhywun

I dunno. I remember from the 80s, the villains often having some sort of “sexual perversion”, usually including the gay. King, Koonz, and Barker were examples my mom happily handed down for my reading pleasure as a kid. I remember asking myself, why are they even bothering with this shit? It doesn’t impact the story in any way.

Ah, yes, the “x will result in increased violence” trope. Still going strong over 30 years later.

          • Brochettaward

I have noted that I listen to old radio, and when the news segments come up it is a stark reminder of just how little the propaganda has changed since the 90’s. It’s all the same shit, occasionally slightly repacked, but only slightly.

            • Homple

Radio from the 1990s is not old.

Gabriel Heatter, Edward P. Morgan, Fulton Lewis Jr.–that is old.

              • Brochettaward

The future is now, old man.

    • prolefeed

The Baron Harkonnen isn’t ruthless because he’s gay. Him being gay is arguably the only unobjectionable thing about him.

Seizing on that instead of, oh, him turning an entire planet into a slave pit seems to miss the point.

      • juris imprudent

        Or it’s very, very telling.

      • mexican sharpshooter

The Baron was just following his orders from the Emperor.

        • The Last American Hero

          Enthusiastically.

      • Zwak says the real is not governable, but self-governing.

As the books were written in the sixties, Vladimir Harkonen’s gayness was used to show just how deviant he was.

        • juris imprudent

Yet he fathered Jessica, so he wasn’t the gayest of gay men.

    • UnCivilServant

If I recall correctly, the Harkonnen nephews were straight.

      • Fatty Bolger

And abused by the Baron, or at least the pretty one was.

      • juris imprudent

If you consider his treatment of women (in this movie) as heterosexual, I suppose. Though he does entertain a Bene Gesserit adept.

        • UnCivilServant

Movie? I haven’t watched any Dune movies since the Lynch version, nor do I plan to, because I dislike the franchise.

I was thinking of the books, which I read back in the 2000s.

  3. SDF-7

It was inevitable it would deviate from the books.

Fortunately for the movie makers — I read the books once, I think (honestly I’m not sure I made it through all the sequels). Unfortunately for the movie makers, the sequels killed any caring I had for the books or a movie… so I really don’t care what they do.

I will say that Zendaya seems to just have resting cranky face… I dimly remembering her smiling a couple of times as Mary Jane in the Spider-Man movies… but she seems to just be trying to out-Daria Daria.

    • Drake

Hell of a step down from Sean Young. Her crazy hotness had me mesmerized as a teen.

      • Fatty Bolger

        (nods in agreement)

      • Zwak says the real is not governable, but self-governing.

Blade Runner is one of the movies that defined beauty for me, what with her hair and smoking.

    • The Other Kevin

I think she’s cute. And she doesn’t show her age, so she can play a lot of different roles.

      • Zwak says the real is not governable, but self-governing.

I haven’t seen the movie yet, but isn’t the character supposed to be about 14? If so, she looks like it.

    • juris imprudent

More of a script problem than an actress problem.

    • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

I read the book decades ago so I’ve forgotten most of the details. I remember the worms, the desert, the box of pain (not to be confused with Velcro), but that’s about it. So deviations from the books don’t bother me that much.

Zendaya is cute enough. I’d do her again.

    • Spudalicious

I like the fact she’s not gratuitously beautiful. They live in the fucking desert. And I think Christopher Walken was the one real miss on casting.

      • mexican sharpshooter

He was cast as a troll

        • Spudalicious

It worked. He did pretty good though. He only really slipped into Christopher Walken for one line.
          .

      • juris imprudent

Small enough part that he couldn’t chew up to much scenery. He could’ve made the argument (from the book) about Paul’s use of the family atomics.

    • Spudalicious

I read the books a number of times when I was young. I thought Dune 2 was an epic movie in it’s own right, and did a decent job of following the story line.

I’ve seen some of those clips of Don Lemon interviewing Elon Musk. Without all the (alleged) demands, it’s clear why he was fired. Lemon seems to think he’s still at CNN, sticking it to the man and bravely defending The Narrative. This is your new boss, dipshit. You don’t have to kiss ass, just listen to some Tim Ferriss podcasts and learn how to be curious and ask good questions without being hostile.

      • R.J.

He was fired almost immediately, Elon said his format was boring, just a rehash of CNN. Also the dude asked for everything except a magic pony as payment for being on X. He’s not that cool or big a draw.

Or maybe even Joe Rogan. He’s a good interviewer because he lets his guest talk.

      • Fatty Bolger

For which he gets criticized, of course. You’re not supposed to just let people say things, it’s imperative that you correct anything that might be “problematic” at every opportunity, and inject the proper narratives.

      • The Other Kevin

Yes. There are dozens of good podcasters who can ask interesting questions, and all of them have tons of listeners. But the mainstream outlets keep shutting their doors because they all say the same thing, so why would you choose one over the other?

    • bacon-magic

Don Lemon tried using that interview to get back in good with the leftist media.

    • The Last American Hero

There is a strong correlation between long covid and npr listeners.

  13. Brochettaward

It really could’ve been worse but it only offends Dune nerds, who aren’t nearly as obnoxious as other Sci-Fi communities. I’ll let you pick your own example.

Why are these communities obnoxious? Because they want faithful adaptations of the shit they love?

    • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

Akshually, it’s because they are populated by a bunch of pedantic nerds, who want faithful adaptations.

      • Brochettaward

That’s probably the first intelligent, thoughtful thing that’s come out of Takei’s mouth in decades. Why should I find that more obnoxious than mindlessly making a classic character gay because the original actor happened to be so? Mega-corporations fucking with source material to virtue signal.

And here’s the thing – the properties they invest all this money in is only worth the money because of the built in fanbase. So maybe they should just give them what they want inst4ead instead of trying to appeal to a modern audience that doesn’t even exist?

        • mexican sharpshooter

In that example, they don’t discuss Sulu being gay at all in the movie. Everyone just inferred it because Sulu was sitting next to a guy at a party.

There’s also the part where cinema is supposed to be an art form, different people interpret it in different ways.

          • Brochettaward

They don’t discuss it in the movie, they just will tell you in every interview they do that it was their intent. And the only reason they didn’t make it obvious in the movie is to avoid getting kicked out of certain markets.

I think if the most thought provoking debate a movie can inspire is whether a character is gay or not, it’s probably a pretty shitty movie. Especially when it’s a completely superfluous detail completely unrelated to the plot or whatever meaning the story may have. But you basically summed up modern cinema. Empty virtue signaling while Hollywood elites jerk-off to the thought of how enlightened they are.

Is there no end to OMB’s perfidy?

Trump administration officials used a “seriously flawed” process when they rejected a Minneapolis grant request over City Council members’ support for the defund the police movement, according to a newly released audit.

The Bureau of Justice Assistance denied Minneapolis’ 2020 application for $900,000 to address opioid overdoses, according to the report published this month by the Department of Justice inspector general.

“BJA’s justification for denying Minneapolis funding contained critical errors and omissions that we believe rendered the justification inadequate,” the inspector general’s office wrote.

The federal denial came as opioid overdose deaths across Minnesota were skyrocketing. The number of deadly overdoses involving opioids more than doubled from 2019 to 2021, according to Minnesota Department of Health data.

Hmmmm…. So many questions that need answers. I wonder what might have been going on (at King Walz’s orders) in 2020 that led to a lot of OD’s? And as a taxpayer, am I really mad that you didn’t give the idiots on the Minneapolis City Council $1M. I wish more bureaucrats would pay attention to the stupid things pols say and use it as justification for not giving them money.

Doesn’t pass. Quite chill. Is quite open about her troubled past. Just. All sorts of mental fuckery. Just an obvious Red Flag of a troubled person, desperate, saying “This thing might help! Full steam!” Doesn’t seem to have ‘fixed’ much. Uh huh.

And I was specifically told the Policy was for all. I can’t pick them up. Uh huh. I’m thrilled the end-date to this gig is coming up.

NATO forces confirmed on Ukrainian soil, not in combat roles

    ***
The Spanish newspaper “El País” reports that NATO soldiers are presently in Ukraine, emphasizing that their presence is not a recent development and that they are not engaged in combat operations against Russia.

According to “El País,” the presence of NATO soldiers on Ukrainian soil has been confirmed by statements from Emmanuel Macron and the foreign minister, Radosław Sikorski.

NATO countries’ soldiers are already in Ukraine, and I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to the ambassadors of those nations for taking such a risk. They themselves are best aware of their identities, said Radosław Sikorski during a conference in the Sejm, commemorating the 25th anniversary of Poland joining NATO.

Moreover, Germany’s Chancellor Olaf Scholz disclosed at the end of February that British and French soldiers are stationed in Ukraine.
