Who were the ancient Denisovans? Fossils reveal secrets about the mysterious humans

It was the finger seen around the world.

In 2008, archaeologists working in Denisova Cave in southern Siberia, Russia, uncovered a tiny bone: the tip of the little finger of an ancient human that lived there tens of thousands of years ago.

The fragment didn’t seem remarkable, but it was well preserved, giving researchers hope that it harboured intact DNA. A team of geneticists led by Johannes Krause at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany, removed 30 milligrams of bone and managed to extract enough intact DNA to analyse it. They were able to sequence the entire mitochondrial genome — and were shocked by what they found. The DNA did not match that of modern humans, or of Neanderthals, the other likely candidate1. It was a new population, which they dubbed the Denisovans, after the cave.

When the team announced this result in March 2010, it caused a sensation. Up to that point, researchers had used preserved bones to identify every species or population of hominin — the group that includes modern and ancient humans and their immediate ancestors. “Denisovans were created from DNA work,” says palaeoanthropologist Chris Stringer at the Natural History Museum in London.

STEVE SMITH finds all of this incredibly offensive. The Denisovans stole fire from him and he had to go on a quest to get it back and it was a whole complicated thing.

Mysterious bacteria with ‘unique abilities’ discovered on Chinese space station

Chinese scientists discovered a novel strain of bacterium with “unique abilities” that allowed it to thrive on the Tiangong Space Station, according to a report.

The newly named Niallia tiangongensis was isolated by taikonauts from surface hardware on the China Space Station, according to a paper from the Beijing Institute of Spacecraft System Engineering published in the International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology.

The novel strain is closely related to the terrestrial bacterium Niallia circulans, which is found in soil, sewage, food and human stool — but exhibits several mutations that could prove beneficial in the study of life as it moves out into space, the paper claimed.

Scientists said the novel strain “demonstrates a unique ability to hydrolyze gelatin suggesting that it can utilize gelatin as a substrate in nutrient-limited environments,” according to the paper.

Nialla t. further showed “structural and functional” difference in two key proteins which “may enhance” biofilm formation, oxidative stress response and repair radiation damage, scientists claimed.

Nuke it. Nuke that shit right now. __The Andromeda Strain,__ you stupid bitches. IT’S GOING TO EAT OUR GELATIN! THAT’S JELLO, YOU DUMBASSES!

Is Denisovans on the “bring back” list that brought us the pseudo dire wolves?

      • robc

I have never seen her around town.

      • robc

She is ranked 26th in the world currently.

Which is probably under ranked, as Americans and especially collegiate Americans don’t have easy access to the meets that give the most place based bonus points.

      • robc

Eyeballing top 5 performances of last 12 months, she is about 14th in the world.

If I actually cared about such things, I’d be pointing out to her that her lifetime carbon footprint is already surely in the top 10% (5%?) even if she stopped all that now.

OMG, she’s as fanatical, smug, and insufferable as you’d expect.

  11. Tonio

So, on a more serious note about the Denisovans, before the article cuts off with registration wall bullshit, it alludes to a possible other recent relative:

It started in the 1930s, in Harbin, China. An unidentified Chinese man, working for the Japanese forces who occupied that region of China at the time, discovered a hominin skull, recognized its value and hid it down a well. He kept it secret for decades, only revealing its location on his deathbed. His family recovered it in 2018 and donated it to a museum.

A team led by palaeoanthropologist Xijun Ni at the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology, Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing — and including Stringer — described the Harbin skull in 2021. They found it was at least 146,000 years old. The skull is large, with a cranial capacity comparable with that of modern humans. However, its shape does not match any described hominin species9. In a separate paper, Ni and others described this specimen as belonging to a new species: Homo longi (Dragon Man).

This is fascinating. And how many more recent relatives do we have?

    • UnCivilServant

how many more recent relatives do we have?

      Shittons.

there were a lot of Hominins.

    • SarumanTheGreat

Makes me think of gorilla skulls, which can appear significantly different from population to population. I’ll wait for the DNA results. And even when ‘species’ are distinctly different in both form and habit, like wolves and coyotes and dogs, (or hawthorns and blackberries, had to throw that in there), they can all successfully interbreed with each other. Which makes species delineation rather difficult and often quite arbitrary.

    • Shpip

      (Dragon Man)

The group was originally going to be called Dinosaur Man, with the theory that they had died off after experiencing rapid unscheduled disassembly. When this theory proved unfounded, the name was changed, since a dragon wouldn’t spontaneously explode.

      But a Dino might.

Trump is playing the media like a fiddle today. You have them rushing to say there’s no evidence of white genocide in South Africa right after he just showed clips of various black leaders calling for their deaths.

    NO EVIDENCE!!11!`1~!~11DEBUNKED CRIES THE BBC!1

Trump is a clown, but somehow his enemies manage to out do him.

    • Ownbestenemy

Its social media 101…dude does have that down pat

    • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

I haven’t followed South Africa very closely. Genocide is one of those words that’s overused and has lost its meaning, like racism, misogyny and name-a-phobia, so when I hear it, I get skeptical. Have white farmers been murdered? Probably. Is the murder rate worse than the overall rate in South Africa, which is pretty shitty? Don’t know. Should white farmers be nervous? I would be if I was out in the countryside rather than in a gated community and there’s a political party singing about killing me. I get the sense that Trump is exaggerating the genocide thing, but the media is being incredibly dismissive of a real problem in a way they wouldn’t be if the roles were reversed. It also seems that the farmers’ legitimate fear makes them a better candidate for asylum than most that have come across the border in the last four years.

      • Suthenboy

They are following the same pattern as other African nations that killed off or ran off whites. The people foo-fooing genocide are playing word games. The black south Africans chopping up whites with axes and machetes are not playing games.
When national leaders start calling for the murder of certain ethnic groups it is appropriate to offer asylum to those people.
The left here is losing their shit because this group is white, western culture individuals. Also, Donald Trump.

      • cavalier973

And since they are white South Africans, the left thinks that they automatically supported apartheid.

New species of human: given the time periods we are talking about and the geographic area I would imagine there are quite a few we dont know about and the contemporaries probably did not have bright dividing lines between them.
Two things to keep in mind:
    1. Science is always polluted with politics and no area so much as this one.
    2. Nearly everything I learned in school has turned out to be wrong. Probably everything we think we know now is also wrong.

Tech guys will know the day I’ve had. The 11 hour sev 1 tech bridge with duty managers, division directors, two vendors, and two technical teams all on the same voice call. We had to disprove every single possibility from the symptoms to the root cause even though the info pointing to the root cause was there since it broke. I came up with a workaround to get the users their data while the vendor at fault works on fixing the actual problem, but someone else is credited with it. I can’t go “actually, it was my solution” because I’d look like a credit-stealing asshole. It’s not fixed, I just have to log in every few hours to move some data around manually so things catch up.

I’m just tired. Not physically, mentally and emotionally tired.
