I am not going to talk about dead kids. I am not going to talk about dead kids. I am not going to talk about dead kids.
This is my review of Young Lion Brewing Co Hey ey ey ey Helles:

So I will instead talk about weak ass communists. The news everyone’s favorite communist attended an impromptu gym session. He was then chided by the crowd into doing what RFK did, except RFK did something he couldn’t: bench press 135 pounds. No seriously he can’t bench his own weight. Watch as the DJ Jazzy Jeff on TRT looking spotter pretty much picks the bar up for him.

Now many gym rats will tall you this isn’t a lot depending on a variety of factors, age, weight, being a woman, etc. If you are a teenager, 135 is something of a right of passage. Its a full size, 45 pound plate on either side and one my 16 year old son managed to do a few months ago. For a grown man however, its pretty easy…or so we would like to think. So for Zorhan to struggle with is isn’t really a surprise sicnce he clearly doesn’t have enough muscle mass to sustain adequate insulin resistance in his later years. He’s a walking diabetic time bomb. Is this really that big a deal to voters in NY City? Well…
Mayor Eric Adams derided him as “Mamscrawny” — but Mamdani’s fans didn’t care.
Weightlifting isn’t a requirement to serve as mayor.
Fighting crime, though, is.
That is Mamdani’s vulnerability, and the reason this race is far from over.
Polls show Mamdani leading the contest comfortably, with former Gov. Andrew Cuomo in second place, Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa next, and Adams trailing behind.
The article does go on to state there are more “legitimate” reasons why this particular scrawny socialist can still lose, but that might require he prove he’s not a bitch. After all, even Swallwell can bench 135 when he’s not banging ChiCom spies or farting on live TV.
One thing I have noticed with the recent marketing of Helles lagers: they’re slowly crossing into Pilsner territory. Indeed they are similar enough a less discerning lush might otherwise not notice. Am I discerning? Sure, I can also bench 250, maybe more if you put a gun to my head. Sometimes it sucks getting old. Anyways, this one is still true to form and is most certainly in the Helles category. Find it at Wegeman’s*. Young Lion Brewing Co Hey ey ey ey Helles: 3.3/5
*holy shit that place was pretty awesome

He was then chided by the crowd into doing what RFK did, except RFK did something he couldn’t: bench press 135 pounds.
Is that the bench bra video? Not only is RFK wearing a bench bra, the bar never touches his chest. Zero. Just like Mamdani.

I guess I’m not a discerning lush.
Anyways, this one is still true to form and is most certainly in the Helles category. Find it at Wegeman’s*.
So I might be able to find it to give it a try.

I was actually referring to the shirtless incline bench video, and yes you can probably drink like 100 of these.
I was actually referring to the shirtless incline bench video
Oh. He didn’t touch the bar to his chest in that one. So… .zero.
yes you can probably drink like 100 of these.
I’m getting old. Maybe only 99.
Mamdani should certainly be expected to lift his “fair share.”
This right here? Damn funny.
He’s a fucking communist. He’d create a registrar to ensure everyone (else) would lift everything for him. Ya know, from each according to their ability. He has none, so they are required to pick up the slack.
Somebody should tell these bozos those microphones are there so they don’t have to yell.

Is Arch Manning Peyton’s little boy?
Cooper’s kid.
Ive lost 30 pounds and likely still can’t bench my own weight. 240 is heavy.
135. Yeah I can do that. Never was much for the bench or lifting weights though.
They do say the older you get the more likely the bench press will turn into a path to injury.
Hell, walking is a path to injury for me lately.
Ask me…Apparently the most dangerous thing I’ve ever done.
I threw out my back picking up dog poop a few months ago.
All injuries suck, but some of them at least give you a cool story to tell. That was not one of them.
“They do say the older you get the more likely They do say the older you get the more likely t̵h̵e̵ ̵b̵e̵n̵c̵h̵ ̵p̵r̵e̵s̵s̵ doing anything will turn into a path to injury.”
Accurate.
Well. Ya get the idea.
I rode three roller coasters Wednesday while the little people were on less strenuous rides with the wife.
Bad idea.
My brief time on zoom last night was soaking in the tub.
Likely to need a revision on the fake ankle too. Only got seven years out of it. And two of those were recovering from the surgery, which I was convinced day of that it went poorly.
Those look like 35s to me.
I thought the same too. I did a little digging.
This manufacturer’s 45 lb plates are smaller diameter than is standard for 45 lb plates.
What DEG said. A lot of online gym bros gave it a day or two to confirm, but those are indeed 45 pound plates.
If I tried to bench my weight Id break an arm or something.
Losing muscle mass as you age is a thing
/130lb. wet
My wife loves lifting.
I hate it.
I need to do it to get some mass back, especially after all the ortho injuries I have.
Same. I am a mess.
You look good for your species.
Thanks!
*Winks one of the eyes in front
I’m trying to get the motivation to do my lifting for the day, but it’s squat day and motivation is hard to come by lol

More classics from the Dr. Demento radio show…
Yeah, 135 used to be a warm up set. I don’t do 2 plates on each side anymore, but likely could if I wanted to really push myself. The older I get, the lighter I lift so I’m not sidelined by injuries.
@Pat from dedthred:
Okay, so I went here: https://latexeditor.lagrida.com/ and could download PNG file. I’ve been doing this a long time and I’ve always spent a lot of time resizing the images to work inline. SVG will scale inline?
For instance, blah blah blah blah IMAGE blah blah blah
I mean, I can answer that question for myself once I convert it to EPUB.
Cooper’s kid.
Cooper? Never heard of him.
Non football Manning.

I am solidly in favor of mocking Mamdani about almost anything, but I am not sure I approve mocking people at the gym for their current strength levels. If you’ve never benched, you likely will struggle with 135 the first time you plop down on a bench to try.
Sure. But if you’ve never benched you best not try to show how tough you are by trying to bench in public. That invites mockery.
This right here.
1. I would never mock a person at the gym.
2. Communists are not people.
Therefore mocking Mandami is fair game.
That’s fair.
I would be strongly opposed to mocking anyone at a gym who is starting to lift.
That, however, is in no way what Momdani (yes, I spelled that intentionally) was doing.
Obligatory?
Got up late, belated welcome to Smilin Joe. Glad you’re here! Note to Rufus and Pie, still room for a few more.
98 year old suspended judge- suspended at 96? Utterly ridiculous. That suspension should have been about 30 days and then referred to congress for impeachment and removal.
All of the crisp Euro beers have some overlap and the market is saturated.
At this point it’s like Kölsch to Newcastle.
I haven’t seen Newcastle in forever.
It’s supposed to be coming back. The old Newcastle got acquired by Heineken, who gave the brewing duties to Lagunitas, who made a shite version of it. I saw that the old nut brown is supposed to be coming back, which would be nice. There’s a shortage of good nut browns out there.
“Good nut brown” was my nickname for my college girlfriend from India.
The first time she told me I could give her a facial I nearly came on the spot!
I am torn on Mamdani. He is average IQ at best which means he either is an idiot, severely immature and inexperienced or super cynical and thinks there are enough morons in NY to elect him. As for the morons I am not sure. I dont know if there are that many morons or the elections there are completely rigged.
Things arent looking good. Best case scenario is Mamdani is immature and so there is room for improvement and he gets in because the election is rigged. Worst case? Mamdani is a moron, the elections are rigged and even if they were not there are enough morons there to elect him…i.e. NYC is fucked.
I think the worst case scenario is there is enough wealth built into NYC this stupid ideology persists for anither generation because it didn’t break down within his first term.
He is a red diaper baby raised from birth for this moment. He will say or do anything to grab that power that is his by right.
Yup.
Cruella de Bondi
Attorney General Pam Bondi fired a Justice Department employee on Friday accused of flipping off National Guard members deployed to Washington D.C. as part of President Donald Trump’s effort to mitigate crime in the city, a Justice Department official confirmed.
According to a memo sent by Bondi, the veracity of which was confirmed by the DOJ, the employee, Elizabeth Baxter, worked as a paralegal specialist in the department’s Environment and Natural Resources Division.
The New York Post was first to report Baxter’s termination.
“Based on your inappropriate conduct towards National Guard service members, your employment with the Department of Justice is hereby terminated, and you are removed from federal service effective immediately,” Bondi wrote in the memo, as confirmed by the Justice Department.
ps- You’re too fucking dumb to work here.

Mojeaux: Because equations cannot have one single incorrection, not even one, I would go the image method. That way any mistakes are not yours. That is my intuitive answer.
For me it would depend on whether the reader might be expected to want to copy the equations to their clipboard for some reason.
A spokesperson for the Justice Department, Gates McGavick, lauded the termination on Friday, writing in a post on X, “if you don’t support law enforcement, [Attorney General Pam Bondi’s] DOJ might not be a good fit.”
That might have gotten you a promotion when Merrick Garland was running the show, but not anymore.
On the Mamdani physical thing…that seems like some kind of health problem or extreme lack of physical effort on his part.
I am 60 and have had extreme Rheumatoid Arthritis for 16 years. For the first half of that affliction I was a wreck. For substantial periods of time I was unable to function at anywhere near a normal level and for significant parts of that unable to even stand, walk or dress myself. For the second half of it I have been great. Enbrel is a miracle drug, it really is. What was in my lifetime a death sentence has become quite manageable.
I suppose because I had a very active lifestyle before and then experienced that taken away from me I spend an inordinate amount of time doing physical things.
I am 150, 5’10″ish and feel quite spry. I am light as a feather. I go from sitting to a brisk walk in the blink of an eye effortlessly without using my hands or arms for assist…I have been doing all kinds of yard work, some of it heavy. I can probably bench 200 to 250?
I cant imagine a guy his age that feeble unless he spends all of his time smoking pot and chasing skirt or he has some kind of health problem.
He’s never lifted anything heavier than a martini glass in his life, is my guess.
Hey! I’m right here!
Seriously he strikes me as the somber Muslim type who never drinks.
Seriously he strikes me as the somber Muslim type who never drinks.
From what I understand, some of those types are quite happy to get sloshed like the rest of us as long as they pray to Allah for forgiveness the next morning. He’s such a gracious and most merciful god that he forgives them every single weekend.
His religion is probably as fake as the rest of him.
Australia used to be a proper country. About two minutes or so into this video, there are videos of shooting events and gun shows in Queensland in the 70s.
I gained an appreciation for old Australian culture from listening to a ton of Slim Dusty.
Australians have a lot of parallels with Americans, but their climate is far more harsh. And every plant and animal is actively trying to kill you. It’s sad that such a bunch of hardass people have either A) Softened up so much that they are willing to surrender their freedoms, or B) Remain hardass but have been rendered politically powerless to stop their country from going that way.
I’m going with (A). Hardasses would never put up with this crap. The definition of a hardass is a person who doesn’t bend the knee after the polite request doesn’t work.
Say what you will about Swalwell but that ChiCom spy is pretty. Would.
Eh, she was pretty mid.
There were more attractive bare-breasted girls in “The Dragon Lives Again.”

Eh, she was pretty mid.
They weren’t sending their best, but they didn’t need to.
Still waiting for my honeypot.
“For a grown man however, its pretty easy…or so we would like to think.” I really don’t think so. Most adults can’t do ten push ups. Benching your body weight is a deadlifting milestone.
Thankfully for me, 135 *was* benching my body weight. I competed in the 132lb weight class. Once, I won a deadlifting national, but I was also the only under-18 in my division. I coulda just lifted the bar and I woulda won. *However,* I out-lifted the three kids in the 148lb class. Neener neener fellow high schoolers. Short Fry beats you.
My highest bench came in a regional, successfully lifting 180, 200 then 210. Still ~135, I’d like to think I can still bench it ten times. I know I could with a few weeks of prep, if I can’t already do it.
Colin and I were also gymnasts, and he competed in the Atlanta Junior Olympics competition to qualify. He didn’t, but damn. In the 114lb class, our coach (correctly) believes Colin could’ve been an Olympic powerlifter, but Colin didn’t have the drive to compete.
I am thrilled he and I both inherited remarkably lucky genes. His middle son didn’t, but the other two certainly do. Life takes all sorts.
That’s badass. I wish I would have done some kind of athletic event when I was younger, but I hated the “jocks” in high school and wouldn’t have voluntarily spent any time around them.
I don’t know what I’m doing these days – Running 5 miles twice per week and doing various types of lifts the other days. They’re kind of working against each other since the running is burning up calories needed for more muscle growth, and the bulk of the muscle is making it hard to run super fast. But I really enjoy running and actually look forward to it the most after a really stressful day.
My primitive understanding is that you mostly need protein, not calories, for muscle growth.
*sits back and waits for ackhuallies*
Aktually, my primitive understanding agrees with you. Calories get burned for energy, but regardless, muscle growth requires those muscles to actually be pushed so they ‘know’ they need to build up.
I mostly get my ‘exercise’ in at work, haven’t been to a gym in a long while. Usually walk 10-12 miles a day there. Most of my adult workouts are body weight stuff, primarily push ups and planks. Ab-wheels are fantastic.
Big thing first time lifters don’t realize: How different lifting machines are vs free weights. With the latter, your body has to balance the weight using all sorts of little muscles that are dormant in machine-lifting. Bouncing a bench is cheating. Folk should stick to machines until they’re strong enough to easily manage ~95lb on a bar. After then, machines really shouldn’t be used, frankly, if I’m a stickler about it.
Free weights are much more primal. The challenge feels more powerful with the bar in your hands.
Free weights are significantly more challenging, but there’s a place for machines, and some exercises are only really possible on a cable machine because it allows constant resistance along paths of movement where gravity simply cannot provide it.
Oh, and I think a running/lifting combo is probably pretty ideal. I walk with a weight vest and do some light lifting, myself.
It probably is. There are men who are egg-shaped masses of muscle but can’t jog half a mile, and human skeletons who can run nonstop for 24 hours but probably struggle to open a jar. I prefer a balance, myself.
Rather than getting extremely good at one thing, I’ve recently been trying to improve fitness in a broader sense.. I’m lifting and running, but I’m also squeezing in some biking, sprinting, doing one-legged squats, trying to do a huge amount of flutter kicks, and shadowboxing as fast as I can. There’s strength, but there’s also endurance, speed, balance, etc.
Is this training FOR anything? Not really. It just keeps it more interesting and shocks the body a little bit more.
Its a good combo for any age.
tOSU takes down #1 and road ahead is clear because you’d have to be more delusional than a Libertarian Party leader to believe James Franklin’s tPSU can beat them.
I finally checked out a Merchant of Death my neighborhood.. My two takeaways is he probably makes more doing CCW classes because there wasn’t a ton of selection. I also have never seen a MoD that had so much 5.7 without a single firearm in the store to actually run it.
Goal line defense saves the day.
Australians exist to illustrate the difference between subjects and citizens.
I think it is kinda the other way about. Unless I am wrong, which I never ever am, America is the only country that has a sub-culture that actually beleives in individualism, govt serves the people, etc.
In every other country I have been to, including england, the cops dont give a shit about crime or safety or whatever, they are primarily there to protect the PTB from the citizenry. That’s the tell.
I’ve gotten pretty good at avoiding hangovers, mostly by spacing out my drinks and cutting it off an hour before bedtime. I usually feel fine in the morning – my guideline is that if I wake up with any symptom of last night’s drinking, I did something wrong.
But for some reason, these past few years, I wake up feeling lousy if I drink any high-ABV beers, like a DIPA or something. I had some 12% brew last weekend and felt like crap, and it’s not like I polished off a whole sixer. I know fermented drinks are higher in methanol and fusel oils, which contribute heavily to the hangover, but I can drink wine with no problem. It’s weird.
I’ve had one true hangover in my life. I blame (thank?) my ancestry for that.
Out of curiosity, is it just high ABV beers or distilled spirits as well?
Australians are subjects. They tug the forelock and bend the knee to authority. They have no bill of rights. They put up with authoritarian bullshit Americans never would.
*for some values of “American” and “never”
It is impossible to overstate how radical an idea ‘inalienable rights’ were when the Declaration was written and how radical it is considered today in the rest of the world.

Houthis confirm their prime minister killed in Israeli strike
Good. Of all groups I do not want to ever fuck with, Mossad is right up there. That pager-bomb bit they pulled? *Damn.* I wanna watch a flick based on that. Looking for documentaries, “Israeli Terror in Lebanon: Inside the Pager Attacks | BT Documentary Exclusive” is the closest. 28 min. I hope to check it out before the Cubs game.
Thank everything we decided to hit again, yesterday. (I don’t care it was over the Rockies. Wins=Wins.) Cade Horton is a strong Rookie of the Year candidate. Pleased with him. Been treading water for a month and it’s shitty to lose the division to the Brewers. But, hey. We’re still ~21 games over .500. We’re good. Gotta secure the Wild Card. *spits in defiant anger*
First the IRGC, then the Houthis. Do not screw with Israel.
They must be wondering why they didn’t catch on with the college kid and elderly hippie set like Hamas has.
It’s a good hill to die on
Two Northern Virginia school systems sued the Education Department to challenge Trump administration threats to their federal funding over their policies for transgender students’ access to restrooms and locker rooms.
The complaints, filed in federal court Friday by Fairfax County and Arlington County public schools, ask a judge to reverse financial sanctions imposed by the department earlier this month and declare the school systems are not violating federal anti-sex discrimination laws.
Fight to the last gender dysphoric person.
The party of war, crime, poverty and lunacy. The party of school shootiings.
How can they lose?
I forgot…the party of criminal invaders..i.e. not American citizens.
During the Obama era I was unfriended by a long term “friend”, “acquaintance”, whatever. I must say I haven’t missed him.
In my experience, the ones who terminate relationships because of differing political beliefs are also the ones complaining the loudest about how “our nation is so divided” and blame it all on Trump, not their own behavior.
Was he one of those?
Pre-Trump. Oh yeah, Charlie had a master’s in Psychology.
He previously had had a motor cycle franchise/shop outside the gates of Fort Lewis. Charlie did well though he called me a racist, which is kind of funny when you meet Mrs F.
I put stuff out at the end of my driveway, for free. There’s even a market for extra zucchini.
After a week someone picked up a wheel barrow of unsplit red pine. Moved two zucchini today, found 2 more, those should disappear by tomorrow. Traffic tends to move slow on the road so there’s time to look around.
World’s most uncomfortable couch
My grandfather spent money very sparingly. His living room couch was a hand-me-down from a dentist office waiting room. Everyone joked about it as being deliberately designed to be the world’s most uncomfortable couch (it was). After he passed away I put the couch on the curb. It disappeared the fiirst day. I joked to my wife that the couch was SO bad that I would probably soon see it sitting at the end of whoever took it’s driveway. It was a joke.
Two days later I was driving to work and there it was, big as life.
I used to sort of joke that I saw nicer stuff at the curb in Dallas than I had in my house. It was a fairly accurate assessment.
Hahaha. That’s about to happen over here too.

Back in the day, we knew to go thrift store shopping in the wealthy neighborhoods, not the poor ones.
There oughtta be a law!
The Democratic governor posted on social media Friday that “it’s time to take serious action at the State Capitol to address gun violence.” But he provided few details about when that could take place or what measures would be up for discussion if lawmakers returned to St. Paul.

It seems Mamdani is even dumber than Biden. At least Biden merely boasted of his strength instead of foolishly trying to demonstrate it. I wonder if his asthma went away after the Vietnam War ended. It didn’t stop him from playing college football.
Hey, Biden whipped Sugar Pop with his torah on the way home from Puerto Rican school in a Mexican barrio before sitting down to a dinner of collard greens and Irish potatoes in his coal mine tunnel. Or something.

getting ready for a project thursday by myself- all my techs and another project manager were away.
I had a steel bottle of zero-grade air. Roughly 200+ lbs. Knowing I couldnt pick it up like the Tres of 20 years ago, I laid it on its side at the back of my trailer, using the edge as a fulcrum. its about 14″ off the floor.
I lifted the bottom end to slide the bottle in. Then stood the bottle up once it was in.
Im still sore. af.
Yeah, we have to learn new tricks to do routine things.
I had 3- 5 gallon buckets of apples in my truck. I sent a kid (about 25) out to carry them into the house. I figured 2 trips. I was wrong, he picked all 3, 2 in on hand, 1 in the other, carried them about 50 yards and up a ramp to the back door.
Tres Sr. (86) often tells me he has to remind himself that he has limitations. I completely understand.
