Jane Goodall, famed primatologist, anthropologist and conservationist, dead at 91

I expect the autopsy to confirm cause of death as monkeypox.

I know she studied apes, fuck off.

Why did the ACA need enhanced premium tax breaks? I thought it made healthcare affordable. “Affordable” is right there in the name.

Used to great effect in this criminally under-rated movie.

The one time I saw New Order, it was in 1988 with PIL and Sugarcubes. Sigh.

My oldest was home with me all day today. I swear she is getting heavier. Probably because we’re making her buy her own food, and she goes with cheap AKA lots of pasta. Sigh.

My youngest is texting about the government shutdown. Looks like her husband won’t get paid, but they signed up for something at the credit union where they can get a $2500 loan until he gets his check. Score.

Since Mrs. TOK missed my last pot roast, I have another one on today. Smells great but it’s not even close to being done. Sigh/score.

    • The Other Kevin

Wow first? I guess the first line was apropos.

      • Brochettaward

If you have to ask, it’s not a First.

    • Bones

I was there too! We missed the Sugarcubes while pregaming in the parking lot, but PIL and mostly New Order were fantastic.

      • Bones

        Poplar Creek?

Can you there it spinning up, too?

I can’t be the only one who thought she died decades ago and was puzzled at the mention of her in the dedthread.

      • Threedoor

She’s been popping up in adverts on one of my streaming services recently. Perfume or something stupid. Maybe jewelry.

She used the paw for masturbation.

I saw Hardware in the theater shortly before getting called up to deploy to the Gulf War.

    It sucked.

    • Bobarian LMD

The Gulf War (Tank Table XIII) only lasted 100 hours. Couldn’t have sucked that bad.

      • Drake

        Have you seen Arab women?

I saw Public Image open for INXS in college. Most of my fellow students were big Springsteen and Bon Joey fans and had no idea what they were looking at.

    • The Other Kevin

I loved INXS but never got to see them. That sounds amazing.

      • KSuellington

Agreed. Also never saw INXS and still dig them. I was just listening to some of their early tracks the other day.

      • rhywun

All the cool freshman started to get into INXS when I was a senior. I didn’t have the heart to tell them the previous four albums were way, way better.

In 1977, Goodall founded the Jane Goodall Institute with Genevieve di San Faustino. Headquartered in Washington, D.C. with offices in 25 cities around the world….

Goodall amassed quite a fortune, and negotiations regarding how to divide up her estate will naturally involve quite a bit of gibbon take.

    • The Other Kevin

That funeral will be a howler.

      • SugarFree

        Ban them, Swiss. BAN THEM!

      • The Other Kevin

        That’s right, Don’t monkey around!

      • Shpip

Swiss wouldn’t do that to me. I see him on the Zoom biweekly.

A pox on all of you!

  7. Bobarian LMD

Why did the ACA need enhanced premium tax breaks?

Point of order ! If ACA went away then wouldn’t the requirement for enhanced premiums go away as well?

If only the brain tumor had worked a little faster.

    • rhywun

I’m a rando internet simpleton and even I had that immediate thought about “subsidies” and “tax breaks”.

It’s almost like the whole edifice is based on lies or something.

Won’t anyone think of the poor federal bureaucrats?

Feeding Tampa Bay is approaching the latest federal government shutdown like it’s a hurricane or another pandemic.

The nonprofit is among a handful in the Tampa region, including United Way Suncoast and the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay, that are partnering with Tampa International Airport to provide support to federal workers who are furloughed or laid off because of the shutdown.

Those GS-9s will simply waste away if they get their paychecks delayed by a couple of weeks.

    • Rat on a train

They need spending money while on vacation.

    • EvilSheldon

I’m thinking of them right this second.

Don’t ask me what I’m thinking of them…

    Irregularities, even

Two auto sector bankruptcies have rattled parts of the U.S. credit market, raising concerns about a deterioration in the financial health of low-income households and migrant communities.
Auto-parts maker First Brands became the latest company to unravel, filing for bankruptcy protection on Monday, following the recent bankruptcy of subprime auto lender Tricolor Holdings. While both companies had idiosyncratic reasons for their collapse, they have stoked fears of broader stress.

    ——-

“There are some issues that are specific to each of these two companies…that said, a lot of times these things happen in an environment where things are changing,” said Goodman.
He pointed to a weakening in consumer health and policy changes that impact low-income segments of the population, such as changing immigration rules.

    Yeah, blame Trump.

    • The Other Kevin

      “and migrant communities”

      Because of course.

    • rhywun

Or, you know, enforcement of already existing immigration law.

  12. The Late P Brooks

First Brands struggled after a failed effort to refinance its debt earlier this year, which stalled when investors asked for a closer look at its books, according to two sources familiar with the matter.

    Whoops.

  13. Suthenboy

I am not seeing it. When you go to the zoo and look at the simians there is almost always some woman in the crowd that is menstruating so the monkeys are nearly always trying to rub one out. They are not what I would call ‘gifted’.
I would suspect Goodall’s guides to be more suspect than the monkeys.

    • The Other Kevin

Then I don’t want to know what will be involved in the “21 gun salute”.

My Kia Sorento just caught fire while driving last Monday. Really liked that car too, it was my first foreign car and my last Kia.

      • Sensei

Just happy you didn’t wind up extra crispy!

      • bacon-magic

Yeah…I just crossed the bridge from Alton Illinois to St. Louis. The response time from Alton would have been 2 minutes. It took the Black Jack Fire district 15 minutes to get there. Everything was crispy by then and found out my car insurance will not cover my personal belongings. I’m just glad there was rain the night before…all the grass has been dry as a bone for the last month. That would have been a really bad deal.

      • Sensei

If you have homeowners or tenants insurance they may cover it.

      • The Artist Formerly Known as Lackadaisical

        That sucks dude!

Scary because I also own a Kia, and the AC is amazing… Now I’m a little worried.

      • DEG

        Sorry bacon-magic.

  14. The Late P Brooks

Tricolor sold cars and provided auto loans mostly to low-income Hispanic communities in the Southwestern United States, saying it saw an opportunity to serve “invisible” workers with no access to bank accounts or other forms of credit.
Analysts said the low-income auto market has been hurt by affordability, as second-hand car prices soared in the aftermath of the pandemic and so did borrowing costs.
“Subprime consumers disproportionally finance used vehicles, where values remain stubbornly high following pandemic related disruptions,” said Satyan Merchant, senior vice president, automotive and mortgage business leader at consumer credit firm TransUnion.
“Beyond vehicle payments, insurance and maintenance costs have also surged faster than general inflation, placing additional strain on lower-income households with limited disposable income.”

Has Elizabeth Warren weighed in yet?

“used vehicles, where values remain stubbornly high following pandemic related disruptions”

Why would the pandemic response disrupted the used car market?

I wonder if something else reduced the used car supply? We’ll never know, I guess.

      • Sean

I read that leases are way down, further limiting the availability of used cars.

I don’t fly for another 2 months so whatever. This last trip, in Chicago the TSA guy was a bit too robust when searching my waistband. But the SLC guy was really quick. Is it racist to say that’s because he was Asian, and he was efficient?

OT, here at my place in OKC I had a previous caretaker tell me of the great flooding, so I had a plumber out and 2k$ later said my drain line was pitched wrong. We get here ans I see no evidence of any leak anywhere.
Today I hear “Bobbo, help” and walk into a soaked bedroom carpet and bathroom floor, the cause? A sticky flush valve. Cost to fix? 20$ and ten minutes labor. And the pro I hired didnt bother to look?

    • Threedoor

I’m experiencing something similar on one of my work trucks.

Intermittent most likely electrical problem. Local shop has thrown a bunch of parts and time at it. I’m guessing it’s a bad power lead or fuse panel issue as Intertrashional out the fuse panel in the inner fender directly below the seam between the hood and cowl instead of inside the cab.

      “Professionals” my ass.

NRA members are more free than others

On Tuesday, U.S. District Court Judge Corey L. Maze “permanently [blocked] federal authorities from enforcing multiple provisions of the ATF’s [‘engaged in the business’ rule],” according to Rocket City Now.

Maze’s ruling applies to two plaintiffs — “Don Butler of Talladega and David Glidewell of Ragland” — and to members of the NRA.

  21. The Late P Brooks

    Oh, no

A new era in commuting begins today for clean-air vehicles with new rules that kick solo drivers out of California carpool lanes and uncertainty over how it will impact commute times and traffic.

    ——-

But predicting commuter behavior is always tricky, and experts say it will take time to see how the commute will shake out. On some of L.A.’s most gridlocked freeways, the addition of those clean-air cars probably won’t have much impact because conditions are already so bad. Yet those clean-air vehicle owners will likely feel the pain as they lose their carpool privileges.

“Will they just throw up their hands and get in traffic with the rest of us in the three [other] lanes, or will they actually do something else, because they really do value not being in traffic,” said Michael Manville, professor and chairman of urban planning at UCLA.

Clean-air vehicle drivers could change their driving habits and start their commutes earlier to avoid the peak congestion hours. In the most hopeful and optimistic scenario, some motorists who enjoyed the carpool perk might even ditch the freeway altogether and choose another method of transportation, such as the Los Angeles County Metro rail system. But they would have to be pretty committed to clean air to do that.

They’re not so special anymore. Somebody tell those people panic-buying EVs at the last minute.

    • Bob

Haha! Get a fast trak like the rest of us, as far as mass transit commuting? In L A. County? Lolololololol!!!!

      • Ownbestenemy

Metrolink! Actually wasnt bad back in the late 90s

    • Rat on a train

It’s not fair. I have to carpool now for the benefit instead of buying a more expensive car.

  22. Mojeaux

I am so fucking sick and tired of trying to solve computer problems today like it’s my job. It is NOT my job. My JOB includes minimal IT, yet I have to be a whole fucking IT department to be able to do what I want.

What I want: 2 computers, 1 set of peripherals. Should be easy, right? No. The monitor doesn’t connect through the switch without a driver, and I can’t put a driver on a company-issued computer.

    My brain hurts.

    • Sensei

I do that with my quite locked down work laptop.

Any of the more that absolute cheapest set of KVMs should do that with no driver install being required.

      • Bob

        Great minds? Or just glibs?

    • Bob

They make, or used to make dumb switches for that, no drivers required, check into it?

      • R.J.

I just unplug the cables and move them like the caveman I am.

In ~’75, Goodall was researching chimps in ~Kenya who were warring with a rival tribe. Much child-murder and cannibalization. Fucking brutal, brutal species. Our apple hasn’t fallen far, tho I made a claim earlier today that I stand by: Humans are *remarkably* polite and hospitable. Duh, we do shitty things, pretty much at all times, but so does Nature. Our *social* simian-ship is what holds us together.

A remarkably peaceful society, our species, all things considered. Too frequently, and at the bequest of others, humans purposefully forget this. Cuz damn, we *do* love complaining, and the hatred of The Other it spawns. Still? No other creature even pretends to be as kind as we are, even to outsiders.

People are paid well to inflame sentiment among our kind. Revealing.

    • rhywun

This. Watch a couple nature shows. Every other species is far worse than us.
