Tuesday Morning Links

The Steelers thumped Miami last night and maintained their lead in the dreadful AFC North. Arch Manning is unsurprisingly returning to Texas next season. An TTUN is still a shitshow. And that’s it for sports.

What’s with this new term “hard right?” Was “far right” not scaring the readers enough so all the mainstream media outlets are freshening up the bit with a new one? I’ve noticed it being used a lot in the last few days.

I’ve got a really good solution that doesn’t even involve the authorities. But I’m not sure the general public is ready to hear it.

Now I know she’s a socialist. Because that’s how they all act once they’re in a position of power.

The Keystone Cops would be an upgrade. The whole thing is a freaking joke.

This sure would be nice. I’d love to see an end to the bloodshed before Christmas. Not to mention a lot less of out tax dollars being wasted to continue it.

Sometimes “no comment” is the best response. This is certainly one of those times.

“As Trump policies take hold.” No, more like “as the subsidies and forced EV production end, automakers return to making what the market actually wants.”

Wait, this motherfucker still had a law license? I guess the gears of justice, for lack of a better term, more really slow in Connecticut.

This is an interesting argument. He’s probably right, to a certain degree. And frankly I don’t really care what the process is. These people are complaining simply because of who he is.

Six freaking months? I guess the judge knows more than the jury, seeing as he decided to simply ignore their finding. What’s the point in even bothering with juries on trials for crimes of violence, California? Just let them all off lightly and wonder why the rates of shit like this keep increasing.

Here’s a great track. What an amazing voice. And not too bad on the eyes either. But the guy in the back of the band steals the show. As he was wont to do. Enjoy them both.

And enjoy this lovely Tuesday, dear friends.

    It was a boring game.

    • AlexinCT

      What game?

      • Common Tater

“The Steelers thumped Miami last night and maintained their lead in the dreadful AFC North.”

    • sloopyinca

As a Steelers fan, I can honestly say that they’re hard to watch. Rodgers is a statue. I think they’ll go 9-8 and rightfully miss the playoffs.

      • Nephilium

As a Browns fan, I would be happier to see the Stillers go 8-9 and still make the playoffs.

      • juris imprudent

Uh, someone has to win that division and it doesn’t look like the Ravens can.

      • rhywun

It’s ridiculous with so many better teams “in the hunt”.

        ‘Merican playoff formats stink.

      • (((Jarflax

Everyone but the non-loser of the AFC North need to be relegated. New AFC North should be tOSU, IU, Notre Dame, and whichever of the Steelers and Ravens manages not to lose the division. Their front offices are more professional, and pay the right players.

      • sloopyinca

If they tie, I think the ravens make the playoff once they get into the “record against common opponents” tiebreaker since they’d have the same overall record and divisional record.

Meh, I like the format. Every division gets a team in, so people from all over have a reason to watch. Really good teams that are also in a division with a dominant team can still make it in to the playoffs.

How would you do it better without getting rid of the significance of the divisions?

      • rhywun

Enh, just bitching. I don’t have any “better” solution. They all have pluses and minuses.

      • The Last American Hero

We could ditch the playoffs and just have major corporations sponsor post-season games, where teams that have a storied history and a rabid fan base get to play in prestige games even if their record isn’t good enough. Then ESPN can declare a national champion when it’s over.

  2. Common Tater

I thought “hard right” applied to turning a vehicle?

    • EvilSheldon

Everybody likes cameras, but nobody likes monitoring and maintaining them. I’ve heard estimates from companies who make security cameras, that as many as 50% of cameras installed in public places are non-functional.

      • ron73440

My wife watches true crime shows sometimes and the cops are always looking for any relevant video.

Many times the cameras they find in stores are either fake or have quit working and were never fixed.

If businesses do that, I wouldn’t expect a university to be any better.

Because, you know, those Latinos have none of their own concerns, they just follow whatever the US does.

    • AlexinCT

A lot of people in latin America have become wise to the fact their rulers, the elite, and the rich have made bank selling their countries and their people out to China, and they want to stop that. The people in power and the elite, like way too many of those in the US, see their lucrative agreement in trouble, though.

The Trump administration also included in the massive tax and spending bill that passed in July a freeze on fines that automakers pay for violating fuel-economy regulations.”

So, Lack put the idea in my head of doing an anthology of my fantasy short stories.

I took a word count of the pieces which are complete and printable and it came to 66k. To publish, if it’s not a novel, I aim for 100k agregate. I have 20k more in works that are in good progress but far from complete.

With the exception of “Snow Lion”. all of these are first person stories, with a mix of narrators. I’m inclined to start each story with a block of

    [Title]
    Narrator: [Narrator]

Or just have the name of the character without the “Narrator” prefix. I’m also debating just leaving it off and letting readers figure it out.

I’m also debating how to order them – Chronologically, or some other methodology.

    • The Artist Formerly Known as Lackadaisical

‘Or just have the name of the character without the “Narrator” prefix. ‘

That is probably better than a prefix, but I suppose other authors would not hold the hand of the reader that much either and it would be fine.

Others here are much better qualified to comment on that part than I am.

‘I’m also debating how to order them – Chronologically, or some other methodology.’

Would a chronological order result in a bunch of short stories with the same protagonist in a row?

The Government has finally produced its official “Islamophobia” definition – rebranded as “anti-Muslim hostility”.

“The prejudicial stereotyping and racialisation of Muslims … to stir up hatred against them.”

First, “racialisation” is a nonsense term used to in this instance to make something not about race – beliefs – about race.

Being a Muslim is about choosing to follow particular ideas.

And in a free society we must be free to scrutinise and challenge ideas.

Activists want to elide race and religion in this way because they want to shut down scrutiny and criticism of what they believe by calling other people racist.

I saw guys doing that at lumberjack days in Orofino Idaho as a kid.

I think they had an aluminum block Buick V8 powering theirs, the Buick was the engine Rover based their V8 on under lisence.

      • ron73440

I thought that was one of the dumbest things I ever saw, and then it went through the tree like butter.

        Wow

  26. Mojeaux

A’ight, Glibbies, I need to know something. Have you ever:

    1. Been charged $75 extra on your card for a hotel room for “incidentals” when checking IN?

    and

    2. Been awakened at 8a by housekeeping knocking on your fucking door to ask if you’re checking out, if there is no DND sign on your knob?

    • Nephilium

Never been charged for incidentals, but have frequently had a “resort fee” tacked on.

I always use the DND sign, and even with that, I’ve had housekeeping knock on the days I’m checking out in the morning. Poor sleep while traveling usually means I’m already awake anyway.

      • Threedoor

I use the DnD sign even when I’m not playing Dungeons and Dragons.

    • UnCivilServant

There is sometimes an incidentals hold whose value varies. Not a full charge, but a reservation on the available credit.

No, I’ve not been chased out by housekeeping before checkout time.

    • Ownbestenemy

Holding charge…yes. I believe its near standard practice now and is released on check out.

As for house keeping, nah…most still respect the DND sign.

    • The Artist Formerly Known as Lackadaisical

No to both, unless 1. was just a hold, then yes, that seems to be common practice these days.

    • PieInTheSky

are we talking in the US or around the world?

    • rhywun

Yeah, the hold for incidentals has been standard for decades. I remember doing it when I worked the desk in the 90s. I remember we didn’t really tell the customer we were taking an actual charge. They seem to do that now.

      • Mojeaux

The hold has never happened to me before, and the last time I had a hotel room was last year.

      • Ownbestenemy

It probably has and the front desk never mentioned…

      • Threedoor

        I’ve never seen it.

    • ron73440

Were the incidentals actually charged or was a hold placed for them?

When I stay somewhere using my points, they always put a hold for a certain amount, but no charges are actually pulled.

    • AlexinCT

      1. Been charged $75 extra on your card for a hotel room for “incidentals” when checking IN?

Yes, I have. And then refunded AFTER I left without any issues. This is done so that if they attempt to charge you more later for anything, you can’t tell the credit card company this is not legit.

      • Ownbestenemy

Or, hear me out…they find you trashed the room a couple hours later after you checked out. Not every corner is hiding a conspiracy Alex

      • AlexinCT

That’s the point I was making Own. That if you did trash the room, they could and would charge you.

      • Ownbestenemy

Got it…misread your comment as some grand conspiracy from Big Hotel to extract pennies from millions of customers without raising redflags

    • rhywun

No, housekeeping has never bothered me that early. I *always* put the DND tag on, though.

      • Certified Public Asshat

Is 8am that early for a hotel? You have to GTFO by 11 anyway. A little weird that housekeeping is knocking on the door, but we’re also likely talking about some poor immigrant woman who doesn’t speak english.

Anyway, yes expect a temporary charge and always use the tag.

    • Gustave Lytton

Yes and sort of. I’ve had housekeeping knock before checkout time since covid at multiple properties. Cost cutting has reduced staffing/hours and some are in a hurry to burn through their route without backtracking.

You may have several questions right now, but I’ll address the elephant in the room: Why would I buy a Dodge Charger Daytona EV? Why would I, a 2021 Tesla Model 3 owner and EV reviewer, get an electric car made by Dodge, a company known for everything but EVs—and one that’s received decidedly mixed reviews from both the electric crowd and traditional muscle-car fans?

There are two main reasons: It’s a cool car, and the price was irresistible.

Well that and required online content. We don’t have a problem with that, but be honest. I’m sick of online people creating problems to create content and pretending they aren’t doing so.

    https://insideevs.com/reviews/778265/i-bought-a-dodge-charger-ev/

    • DEG

I tapped out of the article.

I think the real reason he bought a Charger Daytona EV is he was dropped on his head when he was very young. Hemi or GTFO.

      • Sensei

TLDR – Smoking lease deal on car that he leased knowing it needed repairs prior to delivery.

Stellantis, being Stellantis, hasn’t been able to fix the thing for roughly four months. He’s driver a loaner with arguably higher operating costs, but still paying minimal money.

He’s getting his clicks so it’s all good.

    • Mad Scientist

EVs are a great idea for Chrysler. Only people with brain damage buy cars from them, and people with brain damage are attracted to EVs.

      • Threedoor

    Meanwhile…

Full stop: This is the most extreme, sporty, and powerful Ford Mustang to ever come with a factory warranty. The 2025 Ford Mustang GTD is derived from the Mustang GT3 race car, with extensive re-engineering and wild aerodynamics aimed at shaving time off hot laps—a pursuit its powerful supercharged V-8 will certainly help with, too. Considering its track focus and high price tag, the Mustang GTD rises above simple muscle cars and competes with elite sports cars such as the Porsche GT3 RS, AMG GT Black Series, and Lamborghini Huracan STO.

And it’s three times the price of a Lightning.

    • Sensei

Savage Geese took one to the track and compared it with Porsche and Corvette. It’s a monster. However, Porsche GT3 is really a better toy as it’s got much more development.

This was demonstrated by the fact that the GT3 runs with AC on with no issues during your track day, while the GTD in it’s ultimate track mode disables the AC because the car runs out of cooling.

On their track the ZR1 (with AC) set the fastest lap time of the day. That said they loved the GTD for what it is and that it’s not pulling any punches.

Instead, Kast, 59, won a landslide victory by tapping into a deep well of resentment at the status quo in a country whiplashed by an unprecedented rise in organized crime and disappointed by the great expectations that President Gabriel Boric raised but will leave unfulfilled.

Apart from that the communists have been doing great.

    • PieInTheSky

Look crime is just part of life you know… rising crime is you know just a thing that happened. but damn right wingers pounced. POUNCED I tell ya

nobody I know votes for them.

    • juris imprudent

So the interesting thing in Chile is in the last two elections the centrist candidates all get eliminated in the first round of voting, leaving the two outliers. Last time around, Boric got the benefit of the doubt from the center, this time it goes to Kast. And both elections repudiated the party that was in power going into the election. Of course no one is going to give that much consideration, it implies too much fickleness on the part of the electorate.
