Sunday Morning Yet More Postgame and Pregame Links

Well, the pressure is off, I no longer have to pretend to root for the Bills. And TBH, if I could pick a Super Bowl from the remaining teams, I’d want to see the Bears vs Texans. It likely won’t happen, but a boy can dream. Anyway, Prime loaded me up with pizza, beer, and pastries yesterday, and read the article on Stochastic Martyrdom I posted yesterday. Her reaction: “Smart and provoking.” I may have a keeper here. Anyway, I’ll watch today’s sportsball events, glass in hand, and try to actually get a few things done around the house.

But we do need first to see who was born today. In history, that is, before they changed the water. For example, a guy who I have trouble finding words to describe; a guy who was needed; a guy who was the subject of one of my favorite short stories and movies; a physicist who fits the theme; a brilliant fat man; a climate activist with actual integrity- who paid dearly for that; one of the guys who ruined Major League Baseball; an embarrassment to Lehigh; the very best character on The Wire; and a guy who just needed to be a bit more quiet.

I shall not be quiet when it comes to Links.

Am I allowed to hate everybody?

Hey, “nation-building” has worked so well for us, let’s do it again but with even worse people.

And if there’s an even more stupid approach to nation-building, be assured Trump is going to take it.

“Confrontations between residents and federal officers have become increasingly tense in Minneapolis, Minnesota’s most-populous city, after an ICE agent fatally shot Renee Good, a U.S. citizen and mother of three, on January 7 as she was driving away after being ordered to exit her car.”

    Yeah, that’s the complete story.

    • R C Dean

      “as she was driving away”

I have no idea what her intentions were when she hit the gas.

I am willing to cut the ICE guy some slack for saying “Fucking bitch” after she hit him with her car, though.

I don’t know what it’s going to take to break this cycle of quasi-insurrection and Third World invasion. Well, I kinda do, but I would prefer to avoid “rivers of blood” scenarios.

      • Drake

Firing Pam Bondi then, for once in his 2 terms, appointing an Attorney General who doesn’t actively work against Trump would be a good first step.

    • juris imprudent

as she was driving away after being ordered to exit her car

Yeah, even that benign statement is called non-compliance with a lawful order. Should it result in a fatality, no, but you play stupid games…

      • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

It shouldn’t result in a fatality, but she is the one in charge of the car, which became a deadly weapon as soon as she hit the agent. It was one of those super stupid series of actions that went up the escalator to being super deadly.

    • Stinky Wizzleteats

What they leave out has always been just as important as what they include. Lies by exclusion are the MSM’s superpower.

      • rhywun

Yeah, it’s another powerful tactic in their arsenal. They are deliberately whipping up hysteria right along with the local politicians and the DNC in general and no dirty trick is out of bounds.

Uh. Curt Flood (eventually) going to SCOTUS to kick-start free agency was an immense positive for players, MLB and sports. (Not so much for him, IIRC. But he could play. Respect. ) I’m also free to hate the Yankees back when, and the Dodgers right now, for their insistence on buying the best team, and the problems this causes for the lower-tier teams that can’t afford to ‘properly’ compete. Problems remain the same. Just different garnish.

Some more luxury tax or salary cap shit is being hammered out, to which eventual end.. idk. (Shocked the Blue Gays are in the Top 3 in spending. Forgot the ownership.)

    • (((Jarflax

It was a positive for the players definitely, and probably for the league in the longer term. I don’t know that it was great for sports. I guess it depends on whether you look at the business side or the sporting side.

“A new bill that was introduced in the Virginia House of Delegates would set limits on how January 6 can be discussed in the classroom at public schools….

The bill requires that the event be characterized as an “unprecedented, violent attack on United States democratic institutions, infrastructure, and representatives for the purpose of overturning the results of the 2020 presidential election,” according to the bill text.

The bill also outlines that those in the classroom can “not state, suggest, or present as credible a statement or suggestion that there was extensive election fraud that could have changed or actually changed the results of the 2020 presidential election.”

Additionally, those giving instruction about the events can “not describe, portray, or present as credible a description or portrayal of the actions precipitating or involved in the events of the January 6, 2021, insurrection as peaceful protest.”

    Pantomime martyrs, assemble!

A New Hampshire Episcopal bishop’s stark warning to his clergy is resonating across the nation, drawing fervent praise from some and rebukes from others.

Bishop Rob Hirschfeld was one of several community and faith leaders gathered in Concord, N.H., for a vigil for Renee Macklin Good just days after she was fatally shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent in Minneapolis.

Hirschfeld called out the “cruelty, the injustice and the horror … unleashed in Minneapolis,” and warned his clergy to prepare for “a new era of martyrdom.”

“I’ve asked them to get their affairs in order to make sure they have their wills written,” he said, “because it may be that now is no longer the time for statements, but for us with our bodies to stand between the powers of this world and the most vulnerable.”

The Reverend Betsy Hess of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Berlin, N.H. added her voice to the chorus of “amens” and immediately emailed the bishop to thank him.

Hess believes clergy “need to quit just being polite Episcopalians, and get out there and do stuff.” But exactly what she would do, and what level of risk she’s willing to take, is something she’s still figuring out.

“It used to be that … you might go to jail, and now you might get shot! So it makes us need to be a lot more brave,” she said. “I hope I would be brave, but I can’t promise that I would be able to. But definitely, it’s time to move beyond ‘I won’t do anything that has any risk whatsoever.'”

I had a conversation with my wife today that makes me think the midterms might not be as bad for Republicans as people are saying. I mentioned that during Biden’s reign, we had to unplug one of our two chest freezers because we couldn’t afford to by as much meat. Now they are both full and we have dozens of eggs in the fridge. She said that personally, financially, and in general, she’s feeling very optimistic about this year. She doesn’t completely stress out when she’s paying the bills anymore. To most people, that’s more important than Greenland or ICE raids.

    • Suthenboy

This. I had to listen to an anti-Trump/Musk rant from my father yesterday. Then he ended with ” I do really like what he is doing economically.”

My reply: “Your personally feelings about them don’t mean shit. The economics is the only thing that counts”

To which he grudgingly shook his head ‘yes’ and scowled.

We’re eight months or so out, so standard disclaimers about a lot can happen between now and then.

Polymarket has the odds of Democrats taking the House at 78%.

Polymarket has the odds of Republicans holding the Senate at 66%.

On the Senate, the set of seats up for election does not favor any big swing. The Democrats aren’t taking the Senate and the Republicans aren’t getting 60 votes.

The House is the interesting one.

The perception of the average voter of the economy is what will determine the outcome of the House midterm elections.

I’ll say for my part, my grocery bills are still high and for some items still getting higher. On the other hand, gasoline prices are dropping. The housing market in NH has always been tight ever since I moved here in ’98 largely due to regulations on building. The state government loosened a bunch of those regulations in the last legislative session. We’ll see how that shakes out.

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

The House is going to be a bloodbath and they’ll narrowly retain the Senate is my prediction but, as you say, we’ll see. Trump and those associated with him seem to override rational decision making in many cases.

    • The Other Kevin

Here’s what I would suggest for the Republicans to win the mid terms. Of course this requires them to DO something so it won’t happen. Apologies if someone already suggested this.

My plan: Write a series of very small, very simple bills that are LESS THAN one page long. For example: “Only US citizens can vote in elections. Any non-US citizen who votes in a national election, or anyone assisting a person in doing so, is subject to 10 years in prison.” Now put that up for a vote, and if it passes, great, but if not, you have ever Democrat on record voting against this. And no 600 page bills, because it’s all to easy to say “On page 237 paragraph 16 there is this terrible thing.”

    Shutting down the insurrection:

To all who fear ‘rivers of blood’ – This is all theater. I would be shut down in a day if the admin would quit fucking around and go after the money. Going at the useful idiots in the streets is futile. Go after the money. Who is funding this? Sing? Soros? Gates? Someone is funding this and ten bucks says the admin knows who it is. Take them down to the river at midnight and make sure they understand that if it doesn’t stop they will end up in a wheel chair shitting in a bag for the rest of their lives.
    It will stop today.
I guess the theater is too valuable politically for the theater and outrage. It is all bullshit. Like most political problems the solution is obvious but no one has the will or desire to fix it.

    Scientific de-escalation

If you have watched the videos on social media, you have probably seen large crowds surrounding ICE agents, blowing whistles, honking horns and yelling for the agency to leave the state. They are chaotic scenes, which has led a lot of people to raise the alarm that ICE Watch could spark more retaliatory violence from agents.

As a sociologist who studies violence, I know these concerns are misguided. They betray a fundamental misunderstanding of what ICE Watch is and why it’s an effective tool to protect a community whose rights are being flagrantly violated by the very people who swore an oath to uphold them.

Simply put, ICE Watch does not spur violence; it reduces it. It’s based on de-escalation tactics that have long historical roots in American antiviolence and civil rights movements, as well as a strong theoretical foundation in countless scientific studies about why violence happens and how it can be prevented.

It works great in the college psych classroom. Those ICE goons just haven’t studied the literature. They haven’t properly learned their parts in the morality play.

Meanwhile, on the road to Davos

Outside of geopolitics, the debate over the independence of central banks is set to heat up the frosty peaks of Davos. Central bankers across the globe were outraged by the announcement of the Department of Justice launching a criminal probe into Federal Reserve Bank Chair Jerome Powell.

In a statement, Powell said the probe “is about whether the Fed will be able to continue to set interest rates… or whether monetary policy will be directed by political pressure or intimidation.”

His peers from across the globe issued an astonishing letter of support, including signatures from ECB President Christine Lagarde and Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey, alongside others. Former ECB boss, Jean-Claude Trichet told Squawk Box Europe that markets were not taking the threat seriously enough, calling the situation “extremely grave.”

Central bank “independence” is under attack.

Maybe that investigation is about gross incompetence and misuse of funds.

    Purge

Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger (D) on Saturday moved to reshape the boards of three state universities, appointing 27 new members within hours of taking office as the commonwealth’s first female governor.

At the University of Virginia, Spanberger named 10 appointees to the 17-member school board, a day after reportedly pressuring five members appointed by her Republican predecessor, former Gov. Glenn Youngkin, to resign. Those members included the board’s chair, vice chair and a major donor.

The swift changes in leadership follow more than a year of tension concerning the university’s future and its partisan direction.

Female leadership is all about inclusion and compromise.
