Wednesday Afternoon Liinks

by | Feb 11, 2026 | Daily Links | 133 comments

Happy Hump Day, everybody. Feel more like I’m taking than giving on this particular one. But hey, sometimes you’re STEVE SMITH, other days, the hiker. We’re going to get straight to the links because, well, Mrs. L told me I need to go to the store.

So we can attribute this to a woman, and break the streak of angry young men shooting up schools?

When the commies come to seize 24M privately held ARs and find out there’s more like 30M. Um, I wonder if they’re counting all the home builds. Still, rookie numbers. let’s aim for 50!

Something about not as far to fall and not as high to climb probably applies here.

The Grauniad continues to beat dead horse after it has rotted away.

This is how you write a muck-raking headline.

A little mellow grunge for you this afternoon.

About The Author

Brett L

Brett L

Brett set out to find America, the real America, the America of strip malls and serial killers, of butthole waxing and kelp smoothies, of cocaine and maggots. He sought it in the most American part of America—Florida: swamp gas and fever dreams, where love arrives on a rickety boat and leaves when it doesn't have the money for its fourth abortion. Oh, where has Brett gone? He’s drinking at the neck of America’s wang, chewing its foreskin and working its shaft. Brett is becoming legend. Brett can never die. Brett can never die. Brett is America, facedown in his own patriotic puke: the red his blood, the white his stomach lining, and the cold, cold blue his gas station slushie, spiked with coconut rum and tetracycline.

Mrs. L told me I need to go to the store

…. so you could check her out?

    • The Other Kevin

Must have been a sale, his pants were half off.

    • Threedoor

Cigarettes an a gallon of milk?

  2. Tonio

“sometimes you’re STEVE SMITH, other days, the hiker”

That’s a quality observation, right there, that is.

    • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

And, coming from Tonio, it Bears repeating.

      • SDF-7

Tonio usually warns us when things are going to get rough though — “Here’s Ur Sign…”

  3. SDF-7

So we can attribute this to a woman

Only if you’re an inane Nazgul.

Said it before here, sure folks are sick of hearing it from me — but taking people with mental conditions (and sorry, Tater… I think any sort of body dysphoria is a mental condition and we need to have the mind accept reality instead of trying to bend reality to self image) and pumping them full of hormones is a very very bad terrible idea that’s going to lead to crap like this. Or them shooting those who “treated” them… but what they fixate on as the maker of their pain is going to be hard to predict.

    • DrOtto

I did see in this article, he had offed his 39 year old mother, not sure how the father got away ( I can guess, a long ago cigarette run?) So not all misplaced fury.

      • Gdragon

The mother IS the father! Einhorn is Finkle!

  4. SDF-7

The Grauniad continues to beat dead horse after it has rotted away

They ran the horse down to the glue factory before it rotted — because they keep trying to make things stick.

  5. SDF-7

A little mellow grunge for you this afternoon.

Huh… I figured with the story floating around the ‘Net this morning, you would Love some Cobain reminiscing.

    • Aloysious

      I love that album.

His death, like Brad Del’s, makes me very sad.

      • Aloysious

        Edit: Delp

  6. DEG

Thirty-two million is a big number. Journalists reporting on gun control proposals in the states or in Washington, D.C., should recognize just how commonly owned these firearms are and that precedent demonstrates entire classes of commonly owned firearms cannot be banned. Truthfully reporting to readers and audiences just how popular they are is critical to ensure Second Amendment rights are not infringed by gun control activists using scare tactics and lies.

    “Journalists” and “truthfully reporting”. Huh.

  7. EvilSheldon

I would have to do a complete audit to know how many ARs I own. If you count .22LR clones and stripped lowers, it’s probably close to twenty. That’s really too many though, the number that I regularly shoot is more like five.

    I’m doing my part!!!

    • SDF-7

Someone wants to be Captain of Volunteers in their raised regiment, it seems.

      • EvilSheldon

Not remotely. But I am a big believer in having plenty of spares.

    • Sean

Damn. Looks like I’ve been slacking a bit.

      • SDF-7

Better than being stuck using MS Teams.

      • trshmnstr

My company just announced that slack is no longer the preferred IM client and to move to teams. 🔥🔥💥

Suggest bringing back pneumatic message tubes.

I’m not sure if that would just suck or maybe just blow….

      • EvilSheldon

        Sucking is just blowing backwards.

      • SDF-7

        Sucking is just blowing backwards.

This comment approved by President Skroob.

    • Sensei

I bet you have over 500 round of ammunition too!

      • SDF-7

        Arsenal and Old Lace….

      • EvilSheldon

I’m bad at stockpiling ammunition. I tend to shoot it up too quickly.

        But yes.

    • R C Dean

I don’t own an AR, but we have two Tavors. If you add in other types of .223/5.56 mag-fed semi-autos, I wonder what the total would be.

    • Threedoor

      Four and a receiver.
      Not sure.

  8. Tonio

“When the commies come to seize 24M privately held ARs…”

I think we’re a while away from seize, but only a little. We’re now in the make ’em illegal and try to intimidate lawful gun owners into unloading.

    • R C Dean

When they outlaw possession of them, as VA is about to do, I think we are to the seizure stage. At that point, it’s a matter of tactics. Anyone who law enforcement discovers has an AR will get it seized.

At what point do we start seeing people take Solzhenitsyn’s advice?

And how we burned in the camps later, thinking: What would things have been like if every Security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive and had to say good-bye to his family?

      • EvilSheldon

At what point do we start seeing people take Solzhenitsyn’s advice?

        Two possibilities, neither one appealing.

First, when it’s a choice between fighting and dying in the street.

Second, when there’s a chance that you might win.

    • Threedoor

FIL is freaked out about his guns in WA and how he’ll transfer them to kids and grandkids when it’s time.

I keep telling him to not worry and just do it.

It’s odd how so many ‘conservatives’ kowtow to garbage laws.

  9. kinnath

“When the commies come to seize 24M privately held ARs…”

I’m sure they have no interest in my classic, walnut-stocked varmint rifle that also shoots .223/5.56.

    • Threedoor

Shoot. I forgot I have one of those too.

    • SDF-7

They could throw everyone for a loop and invade Austria to ship off the excess.

      • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

        Start small with Liechtenstein.

    • creech

Ship the excess off to Greenland?

    • rhywun

Oh, it’s an immigration thing. Not a births thing.

The population is rising 1% a year according to wikipedia, which does seem high. And I’m sure the natives are not reproducing at replacement rates.

    • Threedoor

Back to Syria one would home.

    • R C Dean

I find that extraordinarily difficult to believe. I don’t recall the numbers from when I was a fiduciary for the hospital’s retirement plans, but our participation rate was north of 80%, and the average and median balance was definitely north (as in multiples) of $1,000. And we had a good number of employees who weren’t particularly well paid.

      • rhywun

The fidelity stuff seems more realistic

Yikes, those numbers are terrifying too.

      • Sensei

RC, if they participate median was $40k.

    • rhywun

I would not be surprised if half or more of Americans have *nothing* saved. They think they will be living off SS.

      • Threedoor

        They deserve to starve.

      • Muzzled Woodchipper

        Disagree.

They’re stupid, to be sure, but it’s hard to blame a population that has been thoroughly propagandized on a subject for their entire lives for believing said propaganda.

Continued global heating could trigger climate tipping points, leading to a cascade of further tipping points and feedback loops, they said. This would lock the world into a new and hellish “hothouse Earth” climate far worse than the 2-3C temperature rise the world is on track to reach. The climate would also be very different to the benign conditions of the past 11,000 years, during which the whole of human civilisation developed.

COULD. Or, you know.. could NOT.

  11. The Late P Brooks

At 3-4C, “the economy and society will cease to function as we know it”, scientists said last week

    According to our model.

Fuck you and the model you rode in on.

    • SDF-7

Well thank goodness they didn’t decide on Sports Utility Model for their acronym then.

And yeah — a range of only 287 miles and having to plan charging around that would certainly be a deal killer in my book. But I always worry about trips across NM/AZ or WY/CO and like the 450+ I get with my older gas coupe.

      • Sensei

The greenies already have a Rivian or Lucid three row.

I assume most of these are going to CA.

    Whoa.

    • R.J.

Amazing how the press builds this up. A year from now:

      • Sensei

If only it was that small of a write down.

Black fourth graders in Mississippi are on average better readers than those in Massachusetts, which is often thought to have the best public school system in the country (and one that spends twice as much per pupil).

The “southern schools are rubbish” trope has always been, well, rubbish. Average scores on, say the SAT / ACT were always lower because southern states have a disproportionate number of minorities.

Going back to phonics instead of relying on whatever Ed School fad is current has done wonders for the kids.

    • creech

And how do the women at UMiss stack up against the women from UMass?

      • (((Jarflax

      • Shpip

And how do the women at UMiss stack up

Amble through The Grove on a warm September Saturday morning before a football game. Every twenty seconds you’ll spy a lass that’d make a bishop kick a hole in a stained glass window.

    • rhywun

Now do NYC which probably spends twice as much as Massachusetts. (It was up to something like $49K per pupil the last I heard.)

      • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

Education spending has been a kickback scheme for D coffers as long as I can remember. And them just getting greedier doesn’t make a difference.

Leering centers are just the tip of the ice berg.

    • slumbrew

the best public school system in the country

That’s “tallest midget” territory. Anyone who can afford to send their kids to private school does so.

      • rhywun

Especially politicians who cheer public education the loudest.

  15. The Late P Brooks

Scientists warned in 2018 of the prospect of a hothouse Earth. In this scenario, global temperature stays significantly above the 4C rise of current worst-case climate scenarios for thousands of years, driving a huge rise in sea level that drowns coastal cities.

    There goes Zuckerberg’s new house.

…break the streak of angry young men shooting up schools?

Other than the one in Uvalde, the only school shooting that immediately comes to mind is when the troon (was/were) went off in Nashville.

It’s probably because spree shootings are starting to become passe.

Believe it or not, there are trends among murdery types. Back in the 70s is was serial killers. Now, it’s folks wanting to go out with a bang, so to speak.

    • SDF-7

Maybe we could make it cool to take each other out and just get Mortal Kombat.

      • R.J.

        #Duelingiscool

      • EvilSheldon

“I apologize for calling your wife a bloated warthog, and I bid you good day!”

    • EvilSheldon

The 70’s also had a noticeable uptick in bombings.

But I doubt that many of our modern spree killers could build a functioning IED, even without FBI assistance. That’s probably a good thing.

      • Muzzled Woodchipper

I assume bombings are next once many of these court decisions from appeals courts all over the country affirming Trump’s agenda almost across the board filter through.

    • (((Jarflax

Murderers today lack the patience and long term thinking for serial killing. Running down to the nearest soft target and randomly blazing away is more in tune with the instant gratification and short attention spans of today.

    • SDF-7

So they really want some Cheers?

    • Threedoor

    • DEG

I’ve been watching monthly Treasury reports for the past year or so. I haven’t checked to see if February’s is available. If it is not out, it should be out soon.

Spending has been going up under Trump. The Treasury is projecting for FY2026 an increase in revenue, which is more than what can be explained by tariffs, such that even with the increased the spending the annual deficit goes down from something like $1.7 trillion to $1.6 trillion. Which means the debt goes up.

Trump’s FY2027 budget proposal is overdue the last I checked, but I expect no cut in spending.

I’ll give this one to Politico.

      • DEG

even with the increased the spending

even with the increase in spending.

        PROOFRAD!

  21. The Late P Brooks

As the CBO predicted last summer, the Republican megabill Trump signed into law in July will help boost economic growth this year. But that will be partially offset by the economic effects of Trump’s tariffs and increased immigration enforcement.

Let’s not forget the legal costs incurred in the attempt to eliminate government programs and jobs.

  22. Muzzled Woodchipper

    Never change, jouralismismas….

Mass shootings in Canada are rare, particularly compared with the neighbouring United States. Analysts have long pointed to Canada’s stricter gun laws, which make it difficult to own handguns or “assault-style weapons”, to explain the difference.

If there isn’t a job at the US in any given story, is it even journalism?

    • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

Nevermind that Canada has only 1/10 the population of the US.

Violent criminals in NYC get less – or no – bail.

  23. The Late P Brooks

I’ll give this one to Politico.

We were in great shape before Trump fucked everything up.

I think it has been pretty well established that Trump couldn’t cut spending even if he actually had any meaningful interest in doing so.

    *spoiler alert- he doesn’t.

    • DEG

We were in great shape before Trump fucked everything up.

I’m not giving the guy that ran on “Drain the Swamp” a pass just because people before him were shitty too.

      • Muzzled Woodchipper

I suppose the inherent problem is that the system is designed such that 1 man, no matter how dedicated he may be (and I’m not saying Trump is), it still takes hundreds of others to agree and have the political will to get it done.

For Instance: We could send DEG to the WH, and about as much cutting would get done as has happened.

      • R.J.

I know. If he actually does fire 500,000 government workers I’ll consider him effective at swamp draining.

      • R.J.

He did just get a favorable judicial ruling to allow him to fire at will, anyone under the executive branch. He needs to go for it.

      • DEG

He did just get a favorable judicial ruling to allow him to fire at will, anyone under the executive branch. He needs to go for it.

I thought that it was only those subject to reclassification? I.e. many employees still have civil service protections.

We could send DEG to the WH, and about as much cutting would get done as has happened.

Probably. The big difference? I’d actually veto shit and not go to bat for things like the BBB.

      • Evan from Evansville

I agree with he who chips wood. The Deep State is real, and 95% of Congress has zero intention to cut spending. And zero incentive, really. It’s awfully hard to raise campaign $$ on it.

      • DEG

Correctomundo DEG, those with civil service protections are not at will.

And to add on, this is something Trump tried late during his first term but it got slow rolled by the bureaucracy.

This time around, and certain people might need their fainting couches since I will say something good about Trump, he got on it right away and might actually get it done. Final rule issued and from the linked story, 30 days before anything can happen.

    • DrOtto

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

Trump pretended to like the idea to get Elon’s money and continued to humor him a bit afterwards but it’s absolutely fucking clear that he doesn’t give a damn about spending or the deficit. We haven’t had a reasonable spender since, like it or not, Bill Clinton.

      • Threedoor

Walking talking and chewing gum at the same time is possible.

      • Gdragon

“Apparently, the Epstein “list” is more important to deficit hawks like Massie…”

Yeah, he should offer amendments to stop the extra spending and/or vote against it. Oh wait…

    • rhywun

What percentage of the budget is off-limits again? And how wasteful is it?

      • Threedoor

More than half is unassailable welfare spending.

I’m guessing half of that is fraud.

        All of it is unconstitutional.
