Sunday Morning Pre-Election Links

“I am the candidate for simple farmers, people of the land. The common clay.”

I bet you thought I’d talk about the impending St. Patrick’s Day and the annual excuse for alcoholic excess. Especially given my Irish heritage- my family originates in the eastern part of Ireland, the very eastern part. Like Israel.

But no, we have an election coming up here in the Gulch, with yours truly carrying the banner of Team Red. And our party breakdown for the electorate here is about 95% Blue, 5% Red. My platform is “A head for every pike.” I got ’em just where I want ’em. Because of the Paddy deal on Tuesday, the election has been moved to Wednesday, so I expect a highly hungover turnout to straggle in.

Besides my impending defeat, we celebrate a shitbag president (but I repeat myself); a delightful character actor; an electrifying guitarist; “the Patron Saint of the AWFLs“; a guy singularly responsible for turning sermonizing into monetizing; the guy who made my favorite horror film; the archetypical rocker who was all image; and a shitbag now-ex-NFL coach.

And shitbags are, as usual, over-represented in Links.

Frog. Water. Boil. It’s inevitable that we will send troops.

BBC is a reliable carrier of water. They even do the “toy in the rubble” shot.

I am shocked, SHOCKED, that most of what we see is bullshit. Here’s non-paywall version.

Just so you know that (((we))) do the propaganda thing, too, just not as relentlessly.

Nice try, but you gotta hide it better.

Are you fucking kidding? He couldn’t even win Pennsylvania.

Senator Penis shows once again that brainlessness might be contagious.

Two old bags fret that the gravy train might dry up and people will have to do actual useful stuff. The faster we get government out of non-defense science, the faster science will begin to progress again.

Kaiser and Rosie do indeed emit a lot of gas.

“You can’t do that, it’s the job for Team Blue!”

Everybody knows Amie, which is a catchy song, but for me, this is the kind of thing they do better. I do like the P Brooks mustache on the cover.

St. Patrick’s Day: Amateur Night II – Drunken Hullabaloo. Being part Irish, I avoid the celebrations like the plague.

      • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

If you go to Ireland on that day, you mostly find people going to church. And a bunch of foreign drunks.

    • EvilSheldon

My mothers family is Irish Catholic, but I figure that when they immigrated to the states in 1901, they relieved me of the requirement to have a special day to drink on.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m still gonna drink…

      • slumbrew

I am definitely open up one of the pinos I had delivered, to go with my steak tonight.

I may even have cabbage, but only because I have half a head of Napa I need to do something with.

      Hear, hear.

Mostly Irish but I avoid this nonsense like the plague.

No matter how bad you think it is by you, imagine what it’s like around here.

Just saw that there are now 4MM Muslims in England (it was on the internet so it must be true, right?).

Which means that England is lost. There is no way that 4MM people can be removed from England without the kind of ethnic cleansing that would give Stalin’s corpse a boner.

    • rhywun

Wikipedia says 6.7% which implies yes almost 4MM.

I forget if that surpasses the “point of no return” or whatever that writer posited about them in Europe.

      • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

This would probably work. They all seem to hate the cold and rain, and keep going back to “visit” the old countries.

      • Chafed

I genuinely wonder what percentage would leave if that happened.

      • Chafed

Republic of Ireland has about 5.5 million people. So give it another 5 years.

  5. rhywun

I am shocked, SHOCKED, that most of what we see is bullshit.

Pairs nicely with the most of what we read is bullshit.

After the last war, Israelis are pretty effectively enforcing censorship of coverage of Iranian strikes. AI is just filling the void.

    • Stinky Wizzleteats

It’s always been mostly bullshit but now you can’t even believe your eyes.

      • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

We are rapidly moving to a point that unless you see something without any sort of media filter, such as TV or movies or the internet, you cannot trust it.

Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

  6. rhywun

Are you fucking kidding? He couldn’t even win Pennsylvania.

He could not win a national primary for dogcatcher in today’s Team Blue. Guess why.

    • creech

He certainly could win the governorship in PA again. The Red Team has no one capable of beating him and his “moderate” image.

      • juris imprudent

        He’s certainly no Mamdani!

      • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

He couldn’t even get through the primaries in the D’s now, so being a moderate is a non-issue.

  7. rhywun

Two old bags fret that the gravy train might dry up and people will have to do actual useful stuff.

    Sadly paywalled.

Do they touch on the likelihood that all universities had to do was stop pushing 100% racist, sexist, Marxist horseshit and the good times would have probably never ended?

    • Common Tater

Odd, it’s not paywalled for me.

  8. Stinky Wizzleteats

“Frog. Water. Boil. It’s inevitable that we will send troops.”

Yes it is, the Marines are being sent over right now to take losses to bolster the case for a large scale ground invasion in the eyes of the American public. Trump is a fool but what should we expect from a guy who likes hanging around Lindsey Graham?

    • Drake

I really hope you are incorrect. Don’t want a bloody Tarawa and I think it would backfire spectacularly for the administration.

Worse than Tarawa, it wouldn’t end. Drones and missiles would never stop.

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

They’re being sent to that island they bombed, don’t you think? Let them land and then take pot shots at them as desired will be what the Iranians do. Occasionally hit a ship or bring down a plane bringing in supplies. A constant and low grade drip drip of casualties that’ll necessitate a really big push to finish the job.

    • R C Dean

I’m not crazy about this Iran thing, but so far the only big thing that comes to mind that Trump 2.0 has done that was foolish was believing Congress would go along with his domestic agenda. There may be some other things as well. For the record, I think he handled COVID like a goddam fool.

We’ll see how Iran turns out. It may also be a foolish piece of adventurism, but it’s too early to say.

In OT too-local news, I am irrationally pleased to report that I finally got email confirmation yesterday that my Microsoft account (which I didn’t know I had until hackers started trying to get into it) has been closed…with lightning speed after I requested its closure on February 12th. 🙄

      • Gender Traitor

So far, so good. I can do what I want/need to do, as my computing needs are embarrassingly simple. I have no idea what to do with the DOS-like “Terminal” thing – I see little messages flash by when I shut down, but I don’t know how to pause them to see whether it’s anything I should act on. 🤷

      • UnCivilServant

        Probably just processes shutting down.

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

Yeah, Mint (that’s the way you went right?) is pretty sweet and it runs well on older systems that grind to a halt trying to run Windows. Highly recommended.

      • Gender Traitor

From memory, as I don’t feel like rebooting right now, I’ve made out something to the effect that something may be hogging CPU resources and I might want to consider…doing/using something??

Good luck on the election, OM. !

well whenever I do not know your opinion on a wine I simply assume you hate it.

      • Old Man With Candy

With Italian especially, I love the “second” wines in a region. Rosso di Montalcino, Dolcetto d’Alba, Dolcetto d’Asti, Aglianico del Vulture…

They don’t tend to be as tarted-up as the Big Boys.

      • Pope Jimbo

        Fourscore:

A true Glibertarian would demand a recount if they won on election night.

Don’t worry OMWC, we can send you a bunch of Somalis within 24 hours. They’ll arrive in one of our special election judge cars (they have huuuuuuge trunks).

      • PieInTheSky

how do you feel about Vino Nobile di Montepulciano

      • PieInTheSky

I cannot say I am averse to a good Brunello myself

      • Old Man With Candy

I love a traditional Brunello with some age on it, but those are few and far between. Nearly everything with a BdM DOCG seems like it was made with the Michel Rolland formula and excessive new oak. That’s too expensive for Rosso so there, the poor little grapes at least have a chance.

Dinner with Prime tonight, who favors large-framed reds. My guess is that we’ll have something from the Cabernet family, but I’ll desperately search for a Rhone if such is available.

  17. Common Tater

“This moment in time is different not so much due to the budget reductions for agencies proposed by the White House – because the Congress has mitigated some of the damage – but because there has been some very significant damage in agencies that we don’t normally think about. 27. Pope Jimbo

Local Urban Geographer laments that the MN DOT is thinking of expanding a freeway instead of closing it.

The stretch of I-94 between St. Paul and Mpls has always been crowded. It is up for a rebuild, so the peasants were asked what they wanted and most of them said they wanted more lanes added. (Especially the poor peasants that live along side the current freeway, but get stuck in traffic trying to get to work.)

One glaring omission from the analysis: the concept of induced demand, by now a fundamental scientific concept as proven as vaccines. Decades of research prove that automobile travel demand is quite elastic. Boosting the supply of freeway lanes does not “solve” congestion, but merely increases trips as drivers reconfigure their schedules or geography to take advantage of new capacity. In other words, expanded freeways very quickly create just as much traffic as smaller ones.

But this also means that removing capacity can reduce less necessary driving, an idea around which many engineers seem unable to wrap their heads. We should be trying to reduce single-occupancy trips through the central metro area, along the lines of policies like our ambitious VMT law.

I don’t see why we need to limit single-occupancy trips. After all in 10 years everyone will be driving EV’s. Why do we need to limit those trips? Won’t they solve everything?

My guess is that this guy would still want to limit freeway lanes (and freedom) even if everyone had EV’s or hydrogen fuel cell cars. It isn’t really the pollution that bothers him.

    • Common Tater

“Urban Geographer” doesn’t sound like a real job.

My casual interest in Formula 1 is quickly becoming complete disinterest.

Liberty Media has transitioned F1 into a reality show soap opera. They just need to get George Russel a “partner”.

It seems extra-egregious when big gun ban bill is written and proposed by one of our vibrant new neighbors from Somalia.

That bill, SF 3655, would ban the possession, sale, transfer, or ownership of a “semiautomatic military-style assault weapon.” The specific language of SF 3655 would ban a wide swath of firearms including the AR-15, the most popular firearm in America.

Under Mohamed’s bill, current owners of guns prohibited by SF 3655 would need to alert the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) that they own one of those firearms, obtain a “certification of ownership,” and renew that certificate every three years.

Once again, what we really need is a law that penalizes politicians who propose/pass laws that are unconstitutional.

Apparently IndyCar has bumped the green flag to 11:30 E because high winds are coming. This new track Arlington Texas stadium complex) looks interesting. We’ll see how it goes with two dozen cars battling.

Sled hockey gold medal game is underway. No score yet. But French judge has Canada winning because their uniforms are more becoming and they are skating more elegantly.

Fair cop. I’ve seen TOK and his fellow US sled hockey players. Elegant would not be in the top 50 words that people used to describe them.

I thought Somalia was home to a thriving gun culture.

Don’t forget that they came here because their gun game wasn’t as good as their neighbor’s gun game back in Somalia.

As of today, the COVID-19 pandemic is now longer than WWII.

Denial is but one of several obvious defense mechanisms people use to try to block their awareness of the ongoing toll of COVID-19. There are many others.

Short-term capital also plays a role, but even that requires a large dose of defense mechanisms.

The most recent (2026) CDC publication cited a steady 100,000+ deaths/year in the U.S. (late 2022-late 2024), while international actuaries place excess deaths closer to 150K in the U.S. for 2026 (projected)

    Mask up everyone

    • Raven Nation

Yeah, there couldn’t be anything else causing excess deaths.

      Stupid or evil or both?

      • R.J.

Big fucking deal. Flu kills something like 700,000 a year. The author should fuck off and die already.

    KEEP FEAR ALIVE.

I’d like the author to open his mouth so I could share my concern with him. Just lie there and you’ll get a mouthful.
