Unwatched S03 E05 – Robin Hood (1973)

Genre – Crime
Movie Total Runtime – 1 Hours 23 Minutes
Spoilers – No

In this adaptation we get a text introduction in the form of a book, where John gets elevated in villain status to usurper. Now, say what you will about John, he never usurped the throne. He only claimed full royal authority after Richard got killed fighting the French. After all, there really was no need. Richard was gone so much of the time that John was basically running England domestically anyway. After the text, the narrator starts a musical number as the opening credits introduce the characters. Oh, and yes, this is the Furry version.

Being the era of frontloaded credits, this sequence drags a bit, and the tune is a bit grating. The narrator asserts that he is Allan A Dale. I don’t like this rendition, the previous singing Mr Dale had a better voice. Once the singing stops Little John questions the morality of their larceny while Robin plays it off as irrelevant. Despite his musings, Little John does not hesitate to join in the next impulsive attack. Which happens to be on Prince John’s own carriage and retinue.

Notably, in this version, Robin is NOT a crusader. Just a thief. Crossdressing as Gypsy women, Robin and Little John offer to tell fortunes, and end up pilfering a comical amount of valuables. The getaway turning into slapstick quickly. Being a cartoon, the villains are particularly cartoonish in their villainy. They destroy the economy for short term revenues. This is reinforced as the Sheriff goes around in his own round of thefts. Robin goes and arms seven-year olds without proper instruction in the use of the bow. At least it’s a good time to build up the upper-body strength required to be an archer as an adult. Just don’t let the kid run off without any pointers at all. As a result he drops an arrow into the courtyard where Marian and her lady are. By happenstance, neither is struck, but that’s exactly the sort of recklessness that you expect without proper instruction.

While playing with the children, the ladies suborn treason. Actually the scene is there to establish that the Robin-Marian relationship was pre-existing and thus requires no new initiation. She is also used as the bait in luring Robin to the Archery tournament, as the prize for the winner is a kiss from the Vixen.

Thankfully the work overall is not terribly long, so it has to move along quickly. I could protest at how the characters gambits would not work, but I’d be arguing with cartoon logic. This is less a family film than a children’s movie that is adult-tolerable. After all, Sir Hiss inflates a balloon while inside it to gain lift and a better vantage point.

As is traditional, the contest is a trap. Escape is only facilitated by Little John capturing Prince John, at least momentarily.

The bad guys are not permitted to demonstrate any degree of competence beyond the bare minimum required to set up the plot. In a failed effort at comedy even an obese hen outmatches the mass of soldiery. This does a narrative disservice. A hero whose opponents virtually defeat themselves is no hero. Without an effective foil you can see winning, the protagonist accomplishes nothing. All of the advancements of the villain’s villainy happens off-screen by the force of narrative diktat rather than plausible ability.

If I had to classify it, the film falls into the category of “something to distract small children with” more than anything else. This really disappoints me, because you can build the additional levels of narrative depth that the children won’t fully pick up on. Though I wouldn’t give this to children with the level of falsehoods applied to John. He wasn’t a great king, but the degree of character assassination heaped on him is excessive.

As a piece of entertainment, the musical numbers lack the spark you’d expect from Disney works from other eras. Sitting through them is a slog that not even Frank’s iteration attained. I had higher expectations, but I suppose there was a reason the studio was in steady decline during that decade. Am I not entertained? No, I am not.

Ultimately, that is the failing, isn’t it. A lot of sins can be forgiven if only it was any fun.

I grew up watching this one. Still very high on my list of favorite Disney animated movies. And Trigger (voiced by George Lindsey, who played Goober Pyle on the Andy Griffith Show) was actually the competent one of the villains, but kept getting overruled by the sheriff.

The studios reused a lot of animation sequences during that time to save on costs.

And that’s why this is a largely (and deservedly) forgotten Disney cartoon. If Disney still maintains its historically tight hold on its classic animated films, releasing them for sale for only limited times (I don’t know if this is still the case,) you wouldn’t have been able to procure it so easily if it were anywhere near the quality of their top tier works.

    • Gender Traitor

…with apologies to Grumble if I’ve denigrated a lifelong favorite of his.

Ha, no problem, to each their own of course.

Now that I think about it, the only fully-animated Disney films that I recall with special fondness are the early Winnie the Pooh shorts, possibly because the books loom large in my childhood memories – they were to go-to books for our bedtime stories, during which my mom would let my sister and me each read one character’s dialogue (a strong motivator to learn to read my lines.)

      • rhywun

Nothing Disney formed any part of my childhood except for I guess whatever slop they were syndicating on Sunday nights – Witch Mountain and the like. I never cared for any of their cartoons. Β―\_(ツ)_/Β―

Disney nostalgia: 101 Dalmatians. Boom. Dark, sleek, sexy in a kinda ‘protect cutie damsel from deranged and murderous cougar’ way. So good, also inspiring “See My Vest!” when the Simpsons was genius.

Yes, dammit, Perdita’s cute and you all think so, too. If ya don’t, there’s all sorts of lefty, screwball cat gay stuff going on with you. (Or, you could really love her and especially Pongo’s hardcore doggery to protect their and shitload of other puppy children. If a chick chose Pongo over me, I’d at least understand. Shucks.)

Oh! Alice in Wonderland is spectacular. *checks Disney list* I don’t think I’ve seen any of the others. That famous part of Fantasia, sure. *shrug*

Good grief I just played and deleted a demo on Nintendo for something called “Star Fox” that was new to me. Not in the mood for more anthropomorphic canids right now. 🫀

    • UnCivilServant

Star Fox is an old franchise they decided recently to try to revive. It’s been dormant for decades. The demo you played is likely the recent remake of the first game. I suspect it was being used to train a dev team.

      • rhywun

Yeah I had heard of it but never played. I am glad there was a demo to teach me I am not interested in this whatsoever.

I wish more developers would be that helpful.

      • Brochettaward

The problem with the Starfox reboot to me is that it looks identical to classic Starfox with a new coat of paint.

      • UnCivilServant

It is. It is a remake of the first game. The levels are the same. The game mechanics are the same. They updated the art, redid the voice acting and extended the cutscenes.

      • Brochettaward

I’m fairly certain that the Zelda remake will be the same game with updated graphics as well, but we’ll see.

The thing that Nintendo has that the other systems lack is their IP. It’s why people buy it. But more and more they seem interested in just repackaging the same shit. Remakes and re-releases that you already bought but get the privilege to buy again just to play on the new hardware (I mean, I can already emulate all of it on my hacked Switch 1).

Why the fuck is it so hard for these clowns to put out new games?

      • rhywun

Oh, the Ocarina one? Hell yeah, I’m all over that. I never got very far in the original.

I resisted jumping back into Nintendo for that exact reason but lately IDGAF anymore. Nostalgia is a powerful f’in drug.

      • UnCivilServant

Don’t care about Ocarina of time, but watching the new Fire Emblem.

From the catalog there are a bunch of options that are not remakes. They advertise the remakes because there are a lot of customers out there who squeee violently at the thought and go into “shut up and take my money” mode.

      • R.J.

I play an absurd amount of Animal Crossing.

      • Brochettaward

There’s other stuff on the Switch 2, but still nothing I’d call a console seller game.

And when it comes to Nintendo there’s a few titles that’d qualify. Pokemon, a full Mario game, and a fully new Zelda title.

And most of the games out being worth $70 for what you’re really getting stings.

      • UnCivilServant

The number of $70+ titles I’ve seen is smaller than I expected from all the hyperventillating over the $80 Mario Kart price tag. I didn’t buy my Switch 2 for a particular title, just anticipation of the future library being worth the initial investment.

I admit I could have waited from a rational standpoint, but it had been years since I went to a midnight release. For an introvert, there was at least one known point of commonality with the other people foolish enough to stand in that line. I wouldn’t want to do it regularly, but It was less awful than “I stood in line” sounds.

      • rhywun

People forget that new SNES games were selling in the $70 range by the mid-90s. I remember blowing a couple paychecks on that stuff.

      • rhywun

I stood in line when the Wii came out lol

  4. Brochettaward

I keep seeing leftwing cunts online very smugly say that Democratic Socialists aren’t communists. That of all people Americans (scoff, spit on the ground) don’t know what either of those terms actually mean.

I keep asking them how Marx himself viewed socialism. And if I’m feeling up to getting real Derpy I ask about how Chavez described himself when he was first trying to get elected in good old Venezuela.

None of them want to answer. To be fair, I don’t think any of them have actually read Marx or actually know the difference between socialism, communism, and democratic socialism themselves. They could just as easily be bots for how often they regurgitate the same lines.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YaWwRtp63YQ

Yea these are the voters. They’re commies. And like all modern commies they really don’t like when you record them. They’re very concerned about journalists infiltrating their meetings. It’s strange that it seems like only right wing types are trying. Very strange indeed.

    • Brochettaward

Side point – note how many of these fucks are the children of immigrants. Can we put to bed the idea that the third worlders are going to come here and just assimilate to our values already?

    • rhywun

The commies were pretty open about the fact that “socialism” is just a stepping stone on the way to communism. Not to mention, there is a reason all the (west) German commies turned into “social democrats” after they lost WWII. I had an 80s buddy in Germany whose dad followed that exact path.

      • Brochettaward

Yea we all know its a canard. They know it. If the rank and file don’t explicitly know they’re lying, the people at the top completely know what the deal is and that it’s to mask how far left they are.

Another element of all this that I’ve touched on is that you have Marxist identity politics dominating the left, and in turn you are going to find that what comes up to oppose it will be white identitarian politics. MAGA on one end of that spectrum and then the Groyper types on other. Younger people who know the deal and are developing their ideas in response to the hatred and vitriol thrown at them by the left for existing as some combination of straight, white, and male.

Libertarianism really feels dead. It doesn’t have a role to play in this spat and I really think it’s going to be the defining political battle of the future as the demographics continue to shift.

      • Gustave Lytton

Libertarianism has split also. The LP and national grouping has increasingly become left leaning libertines. The New Libertarian Man (technocrats like Bob Poole) have become marginalized. And individuals and some local LP parties have drifted away.

      • Brochettaward

I think the most embarrassing thing is Austin Peterson (you know, the LP’s VP candidate from 2016) running around talking about “libertarian nationalism.” It’s MAGA libertarianism where he spends his time fellating whatever Trump does and spinning it to be pro-freedom.

I mean, it would be embarrassing if anyone remembered or even knew who the fuck he was.

Seems Henry II really coulda gotten what he wanted (after Henry the Young King died) if that family just had a good long talk. Richard would’ve run their prodigious amount of shit in ‘France,’ and John would’ve kept England. That’s kinda all they ‘needed.’

They shoulda had themselves a big old Girl Boss Talk Time, that woulda done it. But she was Queen Cunt on the whole affair. Maybe if Henry had actually let his kids run provinces, territories, etc, they wouldn’t have bitched so much about not ruling everything. I’d have been a fantastic king. I’d also be Chief Religionivity and local Trivia Champion.

    • UnCivilServant

Henry II put in a lot of effort to consolidate and expand his holdings, and suffered an armed revolt by his children (Ironically Excluding John) goaded by their mother which attempted to deprive him of the opportunity to rule his own kingdom. Why should he give them what they wanted? They were lucky he didn’t execute them for rebelling against the crown (spared because they were his own children probably)

      • Evan from Evansville

*shrug* I’ve heard paying Young King incredibly little and giving him zero territories to hold created the tension between the two+Eleanor to begin with. Henry II just kept all of it, possibly already out of jealous fear from his missus. Kinda seems the wise thing to do. Ya know. Groom your kids to be king and give them training wheel territories while you can still make sure they don’t fuck up too hard.

Just a thing I’ve heard. Some is true but I don’t know how much of it and to what extent. (History do be like that.) Geoffrey seems to have gotten off pretty well. Died jousting in a competition in Paris.

      • UnCivilServant

The reason John was known as “Lackland” was because he had no estates to his name. His elder brothers had lands to manage, just not as large as the rebellion demanded. At the time of the rebellion, Henry the Younger was 23, and was asking for either Normandy or England in its entirety. He was also overspending on retainers.

    OT: Cooter died. RIP.

Ben Jones, who played mechanic Cooter Davenport on the hit television show β€˜The Dukes of Hazzard’, has died.

His wife posted on social media that Jones died of a massive heart attack at home Sunday. He was 84.

β€˜The Dukes of Hazzard’ ran for seven seasons on CBS, from 1979 to 1985. Jones appeared in all seasons.

Jones was also a business owner and served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1989 to 1993 when he lived in Georgia.

Many fans have probably visited β€˜Cooter’s Place’, which is a β€˜Dukes of Hazzard’ themed museum and store with three locations in Nashville, TN, Pigeon Forge, TN and Luray, VA.

Jones and his wife lived near their store in Luray, and Jones would often greet fans and sing there with β€˜Cooter’s Garage Band’.

    • Chipping Pioneer

Where did the Duke boys get their money? They never had jobs as far as I can remember. But they had a sweet muscle car with a custom paint job and a custom horn.

Then for some reason they left and their gay cousins showed up for a while.

      At least Daisy was safe.

      • DrOtto

They left for a shot at NASCAR was the story line, but it was really a disagreement over pay. Coy and Vance definitely sucked and that’s when I quit watching.

      • Ted S.

The actors playing Bo and Luke had a contract dispute so the network wrote a season that had them off trying to make it in auto racing while their cousins (Coy and Vance IIRC) showed up.

      • Chipping Pioneer

        Coy and Vance definitely sucked

Yes. Like I said, gay cousins.

      • rhywun

lol I had no memory of that whatsoever. Then again the show was not exactly a must watch for me.

      • Grumbletarian

The actors got tossed into a crap situation. Bo and Luke Duke were beloved characters, like Col. Blake on MASH. Neither actor had the acting chops of Harry Morgan though.

“Robin Hood” was approved, becoming the first completely “post-Walt” animated feature and the first with an entirely non-human cast… Because of the time spent on developing several settings, and auditioning actors to voice the title character, production fell behind schedule.[12] In order to meet its deadline, the animators had no other choice but to recycle several dance sequences from previous Disney animated films, including Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937), The Jungle Book (1967), and The Aristocats (1970) that are used in the “Phony King of England” scene.
    ===
Reusing 35-year-old dancing animation seems pretty penny pinching.

  8. Chipping Pioneer

I’m pretty sure Robin Hood is a proto-communist. Stealing from the rich and giving to the poor and all. And you’ve covered him for the last 3 or 4 weeks.

    Just sayin’.

    πŸ€”

    • UnCivilServant

There are Seven weeks of Robin Hood.

The original bandit from the stories stole from the corrupt and gave to himself.

The most common folklore version stole from the corrupt and returned it to the original owners.

The “robbed the rich and gave to the poor” is a reducive saying that didn’t reflect the narratives at all.

      • Chipping Pioneer

That sounds like a DSA narrative.

      • Brochettaward

The “rich” were initially the lords and such. He was stealing from the government of his time (who, like in communism, also happened to be the rich though through the use of force alone).

And it then evolved from there. As the monarchy grew in power, he began to steal from the King and his agents. And he actually was kind of a symbol for the oppressed local lords who were seeing the king’s power encroach on theirs.

      • Fourscore

The more things change the more….

Now people in government leave rich and those on the bottom skim as much as they can get away with.

Learing centers, feeding starving non-existent children, no speed railroads, EV non existing plug-ins, what’s not to like.

FB — U.S. Consulate General Chiang Mai Thailandο»Ώ: Do you know that America produces the best cherries in the world and can now be tasted in Thailand? The US Consulate General in Chiang Mai, Keelung, and Cambridge have joined forces to launch the “Savor a Sweet Northwest Cherry Moment” campaign at the Ping Supermarket to promote the export of agricultural products from the US and to foster trade relations between the US and northern Thailand. This event is organized in collaboration with the US Department of Agriculture to showcase the exceptional quality of cherries grown with the dedication of farmers in the northeastern region of the US, reflecting the US commitment to expanding agricultural product markets in Thailand, which is considered one of the most important trade partners in Southeast Asia.

Thailand remains a significant destination for U.S. agricultural products, and this cooperation will help strengthen business resilience while delivering top-quality products to Thai consumers. Because of the U.S.-Thailand agricultural trade, both countries’ farmers, businesses, and consumers benefit in real ways. πŸ€πŸ’

Fun fact of the day – men have statistically more often been the cheaters in relationships. This has often been viewed as just a biological reality of masculinity or some such.

Female infidelity has actually increased significantly and in the younger demo (the key 18-29 one the advertisers love), they’ve ticked above their male peers.

I suspect the true rate that they won’t admit to is far higher.

    • UnCivilServant

In the past, surveys of numbers of partners showed a mathematically impossible disparity in the number of partners men and women had. Men were overstating and women were udnerstanting their numbers.

I wonder if the recent responses might looked different as the lies change.

      • Brochettaward

I was viewing some video where it talked about 19th century women and men and per-maratil sex. 3% of women admitted to it in early polling (god knows from who or where) compared to like 70% of men.

It’s kind of hard to square those numbers. Every married women would have needed to have had a few single men following her around in tow.
