Item the 1st – “They believe it as they don’t think about it. It is received wisdom.” – Master Zwak
If I recall, this was in response to a sequence of comments about the nature of belief for zealots in the climate change arena.
While I agree with the sentiment, it also occurred to me – Isn’t that true for 99% of us regarding 99.9% of human knowledge? Received wisdom, as it were, can be a means to acquire accurate knowledge. In some cases, the only way. We need to benefit from the experience and knowledge of our fellow primates. It increases the likely-hood that we will survive novel, and not so novel, situations without having to learn everything from scratch or test every bit of knowledge from scratch.
You need trust in institutions and the people who populate those institutions. Evolving in populations with membership around the Dunbar Number, it’s an invaluable trait. Of course skepticism and “trust but verify” is also an ingrained evolutionary trait, more-so in some than others, so, even in small populations, it’s a valuable trait. As for many things, though, that evolutionary balanced approach to knowledge doesn’t seem to scale too well, and the advantage of trust in ‘received wisdom’ is probably getting smaller and smaller as social institutions get larger and larger.
Item the 2nd – I have a note here: “Bro/Tres – going to work ill. mixed feelings.” If I recall, this was a statement by Bro that he would go to work when sick. And I’m pretty sure that we’ve had others say they would do the same, especially when they are in need of money. Now we don’t know Bro’s work situation so let’s worry about the general case.
To 0th order, it seems pretty disrespectful to carry a pathogen to work and potentially expose others to illness. Of course if you got it, it’s more than likely widely enough distributed that people are going to be exposed to it regardless of what you do. But still, it’s broadly considered rude, at the very least, to go to work while sick. I see the point, especially in the era of widespread metabolic dysfunction and susceptibility.
On the other hand, we evolved in scenarios where we would never really be out of contact with sick people. That’s how the human immune system evolved and developed. It doesn’t function properly if it’s not exposed to pathogens and, in fact, denying it exposure to pathogens and irritants make it essentially non-functional. Concrete examples include the proliferation of peanut allergies largely induced by poor public health advice (that we listened to, see Item the 1st) to avoid exposing children or pregnant women to peanuts. More major, the wiping out of large swaths of American Indians from exposure to pathogens they had never seen before. Their immune systems had never been trained by exposure. To function optimally across a population, the human immune system needs exposure, hopefully small/gradual/integrated into the environment over time, but exposure nonetheless.
So as I said, mixed feelings. You need the exposure for optimal health and it might be best in the long term for you, but it also sucks in the modern environment to potentially be less functional in the short term.
Item the 3rd – Recently, the MeatEater Podcast had a episode interviewing Burkhard Bilger, an author/journalist working largely for the New Yorker, about the Lonestar tick and alpha-gal, the allergy to eating meat (allergy caused by a sugar found in mammalian products). It was an interesting episode, not just focused on alpha-gal – noodling and nod to SIV were touched on. Being a New Yorker writing for the New Yorker, there was a bit of “rednecks in the mist” feel at times, but minimal and he explicitly stated he wanted to avoid that.
So my main reaction was to a brief discussion about Lyme disease and it’s potential origin as a leaked bio-weapon. I’m not taking a position on plausibility of that theory, though it’s clear that military was actively researching using tick borne illnesses (and may have even tried to use them on Cuba, though I haven’t spent a lot of time verifying that). While most of that research was being conduced at Fort Detrick, there is some, unconfirmed information implicating Plum Island in the research. Plum Island was active through the end of the 60s in bio-weapons research and the first major outbreaks of Lyme occurred in the areas around the lab in 68. Anyway, again, the point is not to argue one way or the other.
So what is the point? The point is how Bilger dismissed the ‘conspiracy theory’ while trying to project an attitude of complete objectivity. What was his debunking? Alpha-gal antibodies have been found in mummified corpses of e.g. mice from the early 1800s and the bacteria responsible has been around for 1000’s of years. That’s it. That means the conspiracy theory is clearly wrong because Lyme outbreaks occurred starting the late 60s and the bacterium has been around for millennia. Except, as far as I’m aware, no conspiracy theorist is claiming that the US military/IC created the bacteria; it was first directly identified (and named after) Willy Burgdorfer and there are connections to US military research in his background. However, again, the point is not to adjudicate the veracity of the conspiracy theory. But notice the debunking depends on assuming something that is not true and debunking that. No-one claims that Borrelia burgdorferi (bacterium responsible for Lyme) was created; maybe run through gain-of-function at least at the level serial passage, definitely studied with ticks as a vector for distribution as bio-weapon. But not created. What Bilger stated – factually – has absolutely nothing to do with the conspiracy theory about US military and/or IC involvement in Lyme outbreaks. But if you don’t think past step 0 – see Item the 1st – all the words sound sophisticated and plausible and create an illusion that it’s been debunked convincingly. People will go around with a certainty that the conspiracy has been dis-proven based on irrelevant information.
One wonders how many of the debunks of ‘conspiracy theories’ be like that.

As an expert woodtick kind of guy Lyme has become passe’. I’ve had it twice, antibiotics was a quick cure. I’ve had wood ticks stuck in places both personal and visible.
This year ticks weren’t bad, I picked off about 10, only 2 were stuck and no Lyme carriers. Tick season is about over. Deer flies weren’t bad and now gone. Mosquitoes have disappeared locally, for the past two years.

1. We learn plenty from our fellow social primates, but we do plenty of hands-on learning. Reading how to throw a ball isn’t the same as doing it, and reading Monopoly or poker rules before playing is a solid idea, it doesn’t ‘teach’ you anything about how to actually play, especially the latter. 2. I can’t recall the last time I was ‘sick’ sick. I did eat something goofy last year and had ~10hrs of directly related troubles, but ‘airborne’ illness? No idea the last time that’s happened. The bubble-wrapping and especially the sanitization of every surface to forever keep children away from anything resembling an icky scary microbe is bumfuck stupid. Just all of it. Get dirty as a kid. Get sick. Your body kinda really needs to do it then when you’re still made of magic. I really hate it.

Lol – I did what I could to get Gen X the “slacker” tag. My Senior year, I skipped my entire final semester after lunch simply because I had the credits to graduate. When confronted by my Dean in the final week, I didn’t even try and deny it. When he asked for my proposed solution, I suggested not making a big deal about it so as not to inspire copy cats. I ended up serving detention everyday the last week of school and cleaning lockers the last 2 days. I’m sure there’s a negative note in my permanent record somewhere.
A lot of places like that cease to function if the lowly paid employee calls off. Skeleton staffing will do that to you.
On top of that, the person in question is incentivized to show-up sick. Between the way they’re treated if they do call off and the lack of sick pay, it’s inevitable some will come in sick to tough it out.
People say they don’t want someone working sick either because they don’t want to catch it or they end up waiting in line as everything gets backed-up and fucked. Then they don’t give a fuck.

The worst obsession with “Perfect Attendance” I ever saw was the mom of a grade school kid at a school where I worked as a tutor (back when I had delusions of becoming a teacher.) Poor little guy was sick as a dog – not barfing, thank goodness, but could hardly hold his head up. Mom came to the school to sit with him but refused to take him home so he wouldn’t lose his “perfect attendance.” His teacher begged Mom to take the poor kid home. It’s been so long ago I don’t remember if the teacher threatened to count him absent anyway or maybe promised Mom she WOULDN’T count him absent if she’d just take him the hell home. Don’t even remember how it was all resolved. But it struck me as borderline abuse.

Regarding going to work sick:
I have a small bucket of time off. It is to be used for vacation or sick time. So if I am sick for a week, I am not going to give up 1/3 of my vacation for that. I may not even have it available by mid-year. So fuck you, corporate America. I don’t get much choice in going to work.
I’ve been self employed for the last 20 years. What’s a sick day? Seriously though, I can’t remember the last time I was sick other than when I caught Covid.
Other than the self-employed bit, same here. I don’t think I’ve accumulated more than a total of a week or so of sick days over the last 25 years. There are lots of people who are genuinely sick a lot and take a fair amount; But there’s also a non-negligible – I won’t say majority, but non-negligible – amount of laziness that takes advantage of the system. And it’s very easy to convince yourself that you’re sick if the incentives encourage it.
I can’t remember the last time I had a cold. I had pneumonia about 30 years ago. I got sick going to St Croix, spent a week sitting in the car trying to stay warm while everyone else was on the beach in their swim suits. Finally had to see a dr. Came home and back to the local medic, x-ray, yep. pneumonia.
That’s a long time ago.
Eat as best you can. Sleep as best you can. Wash your hands as required. Avoid little kids, they’re germ factories.

Washing your hands is a rather underrated aspect of not getting sick. I remember in Iraq that everyone but me chronically had stomach issues. Someone remarked on it one time and I said yea because I use hand sanitizer and wash my hands whenever I can unlike you nasty fucks.

Said this above. Plenty of perverse incentives here. My favorite was the covid pay which was a fraction of regular pay. If you had the flu, you could call off normally and get sick pay. If you had covid, the corporate soul suckers forced you onto a leave of absence and slashed your pay. But they care!
There’s a direct correlation between how low you are viewed on the totem pole and whether you can call in sick. Just like during covid when the all-important covid class was allowed to fuck off for a few years while the people making shit were asked to come in and struggle away while being called “essential.”
And final bitch – on a personal level I didn’t get Covid for the first few years. I had a vacation. Came home from work on the last day prior and within 30 minutes started to feel like shit. So my vacation ended up being bed ridden for three days.

There are a lot of states that mandate sick time and at least in some cases it kind of fucks employees to where they just get general PTO for any reason.
I’m in an at will state with no such regulations. I technically have sick pay and can use as much as of it as I want without impacting my PTO/vacation time.

Big unpleasantness in Korea was getting a sick day. You had to go to the ‘doctor’ to get a slip for work. They have tons of clinics so you didn’t exactly have to go to a hospital, but a stupid hassle for young people who really just need to get rest. I used it for a hangover or two, and I wasn’t the only one, but people frequently complained about that. It does seem so stupid, but if the goal is to make it harder for expats (and native Koreans, to be fair) to play hookie, I suppose it makes sense. (‘Just give me a sack of REALLY sick days where I don’t have to go out, k?’)
‘Never missing a day’ is absolutely a cultural thing there.
One of the recent innovations that you might have missed out on in the US is that a lot of white collar corps don’t police that shit anymore.
I can take time off with literally zero notice and nobody gives a shit. I have to record it properly but otherwise no biggie. The days of calling your boss and pretending to be sick are over.
Plus my current boss, the one I inherited a few months ago after they fired my last boss, might be the most hands-off boss in history. From one week to the next we rarely hear from him. That has its pluses and minuses.
Yup. I have a very simple policy at my firm. It’s your sick time. Use as you need too. I don’t need or want a doctor’s note. Stay home/out of the office if you are sick.
If you are using a sick say to take a day off. I don’t care. Just don’t screw over a client or coworker by doing it.

You had to go to sick call before or right at formation time. And then wait several hours to be seen.
Rather than just calling and saying hey I’m sick and need to sleep today. You got to expose the rest of the unit, not get sleep, and then be unrested.
I used sick call only once while in basic. Someone fired a blank right near my ear and something popped in there. I couldn’t hear a damn thing. They said it was an ear infection and sent me on my way. And it was on the family day weekend at that so didn’t really get out of much.
The public shaming in the units I was in kind of meant only shitbags used sick call.
The older I get the dumber I really think I am. I’ve had paid sick time for fucking years and dragged myself in no matter what to avoid pissing off managers who just fuck me over anyway (see rant from earlier today).
I think what bothers me the most with the manager thing is that it’s genuinely in the manager’s best interests to keep me happy, yet they’re still too dumb and arrogant to not like blatantly piss in my face. The bar is really low for me at work or what I expect out of people in general. Like hey let’s just not be blatantly disrespectful.
But yea that’s a side rant.
It was pretty entertaining to have a Drill yelling at you and having no fucking clue what they were saying. They didn’t seem to know how to react to that either. Just kind of shewed me away while cursing I’m told.
I went to sick call once during basic, near the end of cycle on a slow day. Had that perpetual barracks respiratory gunk/cough that wouldn’t go away. Completely unproductive, I don’t think I even saw a doc or PA, just a medic who basically said ok, come back in a week if it doesn’t go away (this was after like 10 weeks of that crap). After hours of standing and sitting upright, no slouching, no sleeping.

A cynical take on Rosa Parks would be wrong think. It’d make her into an activist who actually owned cars and had to go on the bus repeatedly over the course of weeks until she contrived a confrontation over the issue to get what she wanted.

A village, maybe 100 or so, I’m thinking medieval England, but they’re on a semi-convenient (for something) intersection, fairly regular traffic, but not bustling. So the town has a pub or three, a small church, an inn of some sort. Some corpses show up. Villagers probably suspect the comers-and-goers, and maybe. I’m sure happens, time to time. But it’s some apprentice baker or tradesman, or something. Or more established. That’d be tricky to hide, especially if not in a position of power.
