TOO LOCAL NEWS: EPA conditionally approves ending emissions inspections in NH
The EPA proposed removing New Hampshire from the federal Ozone Transport Region (OTR) and conditionally approved the state’s request to eliminate its vehicle emissions inspection program from its federally enforceable air quality plan.
If both proposals are finalized, New Hampshire will be free to end the emissions testing requirement without violating the federal Clean Air Act.
“EPA is committed to working collaboratively with states to reduce unnecessary regulatory burdens while maintaining strong environmental protections and following our statutory obligations,” said EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin. “This is the best way to provide clean air for all Americans.”
The proposals are not yet final. EPA will hold separate 45-day public comment periods on the two actions, along with a public hearing on removing the Granite State from the OTR.

The time period where she says air quality worsened was after the state stopped the inspection program. No one was getting their car inspected. Canadian wildfires were most likely the sources of poor air quality if I’m remembering correctly the days she cited had poor air quality.
To add on, NH has never done tail pipe emissions testing. The emissions test is plugging in a scanner to the OBDII port (cars without OBDII along with old enough cars with OBDII are emissions exempt) to make sure all the emissions sensors and other related stuff aren’t throwing codes.
That misses the point. The point is that you have to give the guy who owns the scanner $50
and possibly the guy who owns the licensed repair facility $4000 if the guy with the scanner decides you failed. It generates revenue!

How easy / expensive would it be to rebarrel one? .308 can handle 7.62 X51 but not the other way around.
I did a lot of digging into the differences between .308 Winchester and 7.62×51 NATO because of my Lee-Enfields in 7.62 NATO.
There is a huge overlap between them. There is only a difference at the extreme ends of pressure. If the .308 Winchester is not at the extreme ends of pressure, it should work fine in 7.62 NATO.
Having said that, I don’t know how much it would cost to rebarrel an M14. You’d need to make sure the gas port and front sight line up right, so probably not as easy as other rifles. I suspect if there is a market for it, we’ll see it form after these M14 rifles hit the market.

M1a rifles have casting receivers if I remember correctly. M14 receivers are forged. There are people that prefer the forged receivers thinking they are stronger. I never dug into the material differences, but I suspect for most users it won’t matter.

A federal judge ruled Thursday evening that the Shenandoah County School Board broke federal civil rights laws when it brought back Confederate school names two years ago, and ordered the monikers be removed promptly.
The Virginia State Conference of the NAACP and families of six students had challenged the school board for renaming two schools after Confederate Gens. Turner Ashby, Robert E. Lee and Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson in 2024. The schools had been rebranded in 2021 to strip the Confederate names.
The Confederates seceded from the United States during the Civil War and fought to preserve Southerners’ rights to enslave Black people.
Last September, U.S. District Court Judge Michael F. Urbanski sided with the students, writing that the board violated students’ First Amendment rights and that Jackson’s name “is expressive as a symbol of racial exclusion in public schools.”
On Thursday, Urbanski said the school board also broke civil rights laws, including the 14th Amendment, the Civil Rights Act, and the Equal Educational Opportunities Act. He ordered the board to remove the names and adopt new ones on a “racially nondiscriminatory basis” to be completed “with all deliberate speed.”
