Well, we made it home from humidity central to Washington’s drift smoke. It must be August here in Manly Time. It’s also going to hit 101 today. It may only be 15% humidity, but the combination of heat and smoke is going to force me inside to enjoy the sweetness that is central air conditioning.
Links?
The only that got mothballed is your business.
The best outcome would be the DOJ not pursuing appeal.
I’m gonna go with leaving it alone.
That’s a bold strategy, Cotton.
I swear this guy is getting advice from Beto.
No creature is too small for virtue signalling.
The gift that keeps on giving.
Well, that’s it for me. Time to blow off the patio and pour a refreshing cocktail. Peace out, Glibbies.

Why? The way the ruling currently applies, it is a patchwork mess. It needs to be turned uniform.
If they appeal and win, suppressors, short barrel rifles and all other weapons remain under the nfa. Leave it alone, and let other legal challenges kill off the nfa.
By that logic, you shouldn’t sue to challenge any law. “We might lose” is a risk any suit takes. I don’t think the argument of keeping the registration would win at SCOTUS.
That was the NRA’s logic for a long, long time.
Thankfully, things have changed.
IJ showed that losing at the Supreme Court isn’t necessarily the end. After losing Keto v New London, they started an effort to change eminent domain laws at the state level. It had mixed success.
Tres Sr. always says, “don’t sue anyone unless you’re prepared to lose your ass in court”
So you’re on the side of the DOJ appealing the decision?
I’m saddened Tres Cool, Sr. hates lawyers.
I still that was the goal of Heller, to torpedo once and for all 2A as protecting individual rights, but it went sideways with an unexpected decision.
Paywalled without an apparent click-around for me, but I’m reminded of when the Rev. GT was not yet a Rev and was working as a residence hall advisor at the Quaker college connected to his seminary. One of the dorms (thankfully, not ours) was home to lots of non-human residents, and the humans annually hosted a cockroach race (dubbed the [name of dorm ending in -ndy] 500.) One gal from Loozeeyanna had her folks send her some ringers from home. Times having changed as they have, I imagine that hallowed tradition has gone by the wayside.
Roaches are a hard no for me in terms of residences. Up there with bedbugs and neon-haired crazies.
I concur, and I confess I never attended the aforementioned festivities.
I wager there was alcohol involved.
And some contestants were stepped on.
As a Quaker school, it may have been a dry campus. (I honestly don’t recall for sure, but I don’t remember alcohol being a big problem at the time.) Which means that students would have been hard up for ways to amuse themselves.
I don’t think being a dry campus would really inhibit drinking.
The Coors 5 gal party ball and laundry hampers were invented for dry campuses.
I like stupid things, and that sounds really stupid. Just drugged out drunks cheering at the floor as cockroaches scamper. I’d go and it might, indeed, be delightful. But that’s really, really dumb.
“floor buffer rodeo” in the barracks
Bet they can’t do that now.
They use forklifts now.
Nugget baseball was sometimes played in the grill area of the McDonald’s I worked at. Long overcooked nugget thrown, bat is a bun spatula (think about the size of a pizza peel, but metal and thinner).
How many buns are you moving at one time with that thing?
UCS:
It’s been ~30 years, but from memory, 6 for the Big Mac buns (all the three layer toaster would take at a time), 12 for the regular buns, 8 for the seeded buns.
I figur w the ‘modern’ generation and what not, there’d likely be even more floor-buffnin’ rodeos between men in such environs. (The clown’s the fluffer. *tap tap*)
That tracks. thank you.
They don’t polish boots. Why would they polish floors?

TOO LOCAL NEWS: Analyzing the data on NH’s Hands Free Law
Ten years later, there is no evidence it did anything but inconvenience safe drivers and jack up car prices, as every model had to have hands-free tech, even the sort that was more distracting than talking with a cell phone held to your ear.
That’s a revelation to some, inspires disbelief in others, but here’s something even more startling. When I asked the New Hampshire Department of Safety for crash and fatality data for the past ten years, guess what they told me. We can only give you five. The records are purged after that.
Being the skeptic that I am, my first thought was, what are you trying to hide? My second was, good thing I already had it for 2014-2020. This isn’t the first time I’ve asked, and it used to be a lot easier. One contact, no RTK, just ask as a member of the media and they spit it out in a few days.
To their credit, the five years of data I did get is detailed. Broken down by town, crash type, for each year, with totals. Both 2021 and 2026 are half years. 7/30/21 to 7/30 26. That took ten days after they agreed to provide it, which took more than five days to decide. No car fire. I was in no hurry, so my thanks to them for the information, but I’m not buying the need to purge after five years’ schtick, because I’m skeptical of government and this would eventually make it impossible to expose flaws in the thinking.
A well intended law didn’t work as intended in practice. Color me shocked.
Yes, pass laws that fine you for picking up your phone, then install TV screens in all cars, and remove all mechanical buttons and dials that can be manipulated by feel, replacing them with multi tiered menus on the touchscreen! This is the way! It’s much safer now!
It gets even better. In the most recent rental I had, they had a dial to select the gear, which was on the dash board… next to the volume knob.
I drove a rental like that a few years ago. Absolutely brilliant design! Nothing could possibly go wrong! My current car is a joy, I especially love having to turn off the auto shut-off button every single time I get in, because it is impossible to permanently turn it off. And having to click ok to the pop up screen that instructs me to obey the law and drive safely, before I can get to the stupid button to turn off the auto shut off button. And the really cool part where my car gives me semi-random collision warnings if I say, drive on a curvy road where sometimes other vehicles are straight ahead, or accelerate to turn right when the car in front is going straight without waiting for it to get 100 feet ahead of me, or park in my parking pad that has grass behind it…
they had a dial to select the gear, which was on the dash board… next to the volume knob.
I looked at the Genesis G80 to replace my previous daily driver. One of the reviews pointed out that the gear selector knob is right next to the knob for menu navigation for the info-tainment center. The reviewer said his passenger tried using the menu navigation knob but by mistake turned the gear selector knob. Knocked the car out of gear. I decided not to get a Genesis G80.
I especially love having to turn off the auto shut-off button every single time I get in, because it is impossible to permanently turn it off.
My daily driver and my remaining fun car are like that. But, it’s easier to do so than in the rental you had.
There may be aftermarket solutions to have your car remember your auto-start/stop selection. It’s usually a wiring harness that you plug in somewhere. For me new truck I had to pull down the glove box to get to where it was.
TOO LOCAL NEWS: Trolling Massachusetts
Gov. Kelly Ayotte is having some fun with Massachusetts ahead of that state’s sales tax holiday this weekend.
On Friday morning, the governor sent a billboard truck into downtown Boston to advertise New Hampshire’s lack of a sales tax.
Bay Staters will get a break from sales tax on Saturday and Sunday, but Ayotte said she wanted them to know they can enjoy going tax-free in New Hampshire year-round.
I thoroughly enjoy the trolling, but to what end? Mocking? Good job! Attracting more Massholes to NH? Uh. Tenuous benefits…?
At least since the ‘Rona Panic, MA folks moving to NH have done so because they like that NH is not MA.
But do they still vote like Massholes for Massholish Policies that will turn NH into Massataxes?
UCS, you wrote:
But do they still vote like Massholes for Massholish Policies that will turn NH into Massataxes?
I wrote:

Yes DEG, we have observed people who like that the place they move to isn’t like the place they fled, but are so lacking in self awareness that they vote for what ruined the place they fled. So them liking that it is not Mass does not preclude voting for its destruction.
When I moved to NH, lots of folks were coming up from MA to NH because they liked the lower cost of living. They didn’t do it because they liked that NH wasn’t MA.
Since the Rona Panic, people have been coming from MA to NH because NH isn’t MA.
That’s three times I’ve answered your question.
No, that’s three times you’ve avoided the question.
No, that’s three times you’ve avoided the question.
Wrong.
It was a simple yes or no. You repeatly made statements which required making inferences based upon implication that does not have actual correlation in observed behavior.
Yes or No, do they still vote for the policies that destroyed Mass?
No, which is what I’ve been telling you. That’s four times.
Thank you for finally answering it once.
There are plenty of examples of people who leave places like California or New York or Massataxes for freer pastures then keep voting for what made the places they left unfree so “they liked that it was not like where they used to be” said NOTHING about their voting patterns.
I answered it four times.
Those people you’re talking about left for cheaper pastures.
I’m unclear how you conclude that giving ambiguous insufficient information counts as answering. Unless “said something in response even if it doesn’t contain the necessary and sufficient information” qualifies.
Have you secretly started running for office?
DEG: has the migration to NH been of sufficient numbers to noticeable push up the price of real estate/housing? Or has the supply kept pace with the population?
An insufficient answer is still an answer.
I’m unclear how you conclude that giving ambiguous insufficient information counts as answering.
I gave you the information.
You read way too much into what other people are doing. They aren’t thinking very deeply. They’re thinking, “it’s cheaper” and not thinking about why or anything else.
I’ve also posted before information on the voter registration changes in NH. So if you needed extra information, I’ve posted here before.
has the migration to NH been of sufficient numbers to noticeable push up the price of real estate/housing? Or has the supply kept pace with the population?
We have seen a spike in housing since the Rona Panic in areas close to Massachusetts.
Housing, in southern NH, has been more expensive than average for the country outside New England and cheaper than southern New England since before I moved here. As a concrete example, apartment vacancy rates in southern NH were lower than average for the country when I moved here and have been continued to be so. I remember relatives of mine, when I moved here, commenting that my rent was more than their mortgage in PA.
Regulation has restricted building since before I moved here. The last legislative term (not sure if both sessions or just the first session) passed laws, which the governor signed, removing some of those restrictions. I’ve seen some articles claiming that housing starts have spiked in NH.
So my options were “Read you mind”, or “research everything you wrote on this site”?
So my options were “Read you mind”, or “research everything you wrote on this site”?
You didn’t need to read my mind and I’m not your memory.
I pretty thoroughly enjoyed that exchange. For the record, I think you were both wrong, so I win.
For the record, I think you were both wrong, so I win.
Beautiful.
I’d toast you but I stopped drinking for the night.
In case you’re wondering if I’m being sarcastic, I’m not. I liked this response.
Jesus… I’m just getting started.
After a long day of packing.
I have to get my argumentativeness in.
Best if it’s over something insignificant.
I don’t tend to drink that much.
*clinks Coke Zero to DEG’s imaginary glass*
At heart… you didn’t satisfactory answer a yes/no question that doesn’t have a yay/nay answer. On the other hand… “they like that NH is not MA” can mean anything. I understand UCS’ vexation.
I am not sure how DEG is supposed to know what is in thousands of people who are not him’s minds but sure demand he answer yes or no to their actions and motivations…
Actions are observable.
Yeah, but the actions of hippie libertarians (the existing population) and Socialists (the transplants) look a lot alike to me.
You’re going to explain how those two demographics camouflage together, because they strike me as starkly different, especially in voting habits.
How so? The hippie libertarians won’t vote Red because Maga is mean to trannies and opposes open borders, omg so racism, much transphobia. Admittedly some of them vote for the closet socialists the L party runs, but most end up voting for a Democrat, and they join in the stunning and brave opposition to anything that might possibly stave off the collapse.
That doesn’t sound very libertairan, but then again, not being one, my outsider’s impression could be wrong.
Libertarians are Chase Oliver not Ron Paul now.
Libertarians are Chase Oliver not Ron Paul now.
I feel like I should walk away from this discussion but I will say one more thing: At the national level, yes. Here in NH, we still have lots of Ron Paul libertarians. Many of them masquerade as Republicans to get elected to state office.
Well, their entire Congressional delegation is Blue so…
Has Alfred instituted a pied a terre tax yet?
There is nothing in Alfred over a million. It would have to be dropped to about $250k.
It is starting to sound like Alfred needs a pied a terroir tax with you two living there.
I don’t believe either of them crushes grapes with their feet.
“So what you’re saying is, Mrs. Biden, that Americans are too misogynistic to vote for a female commander in chief, and that Harris, who is widely seen as considering running again, has no chance in 2028?”
If Condoleeza ever ran, Id probably vote for her. Checks 3 boxes right there.
She was too skinny.
Good answer!
It’s almost like Hochul and the Democrat-controlled Legislature work for the teacher’s unions rather than the taxpayers. No, that’s crazy.
JFC. It’s amazing what NYers support.
They support Democrats, that is it. Very few of them – like almost all voters – put any thought into it whatsoever.
The Democrats count on that.
GlibsCruise Two: Eclipse
BoogHullabaloo is officially underway. The missus and I were supposed to be sixteen hours from leaving the driveway to wheels down in Keflavik.
Turns out it was more like forty. Weather delays up and down the eastern seaboard, ATC ground stops and traffic throttling in Newark, hours on hold after a missed connection…
Things eventually worked out for us. But goddamn, am I tired. It’s only eleven PM local, and I’m wiped. Will report back soon.
Travel safe. Sorry I had to back out.
I’m ultimately envious. Done Bahamas and Alaska in my yute, Iceland is my Top Tier list for remaining vacations. Would love to go, preferably with a date, but along the like of y’all. Who all is there? Have a great time and DO report back. I imagine I could easily fall in love with that place.
*incredibly
If I ever did a cruise – a big if – it would be something like Iceland or Alaska.
I don’t care for the tropics, at all.
Enjoy! Report back on all the Glib antics.
My mother and her husband drove their little RV up to Iceland from Europe.
They went Faroe way that time.
(-.-)
I prefer to take the train to Hawaii.
I’m afraid that project was given to the California High Speed Rail Commission.
They have not yet laid a nautical mile of track.
Heh. They actually did ship their RV from Norway to the Faroe islands, and then to Iceland.
They have not yet laid a nautical mile of track.
As if you can’t fathom bureaucratic incompetence.
Hawaii is in a different league.
Hawai’i needs to be judged on its own.
This was a fun find. I had one as my first non-22 LR pistol before its unfortunate canoe accident.
Retro Gun Review: Ruger’s P90DC in .45 ACP
As the article notes it is surprisingly accurate. News to me is that it will take a newer 8 round magazine. God bless the internet.
Biggest fault is the trigger is absolutely awful. It’s run 1,000s of rounds with my only memory of one failure to eject. It will tolerate a limp wrist shot much better than a Glock. Seems like good demand still.
Spent lots of summer days there. Had blue laws until the early 80s. It is still a dry town.
Between this town and GT’s campus cockroach games, it seems lack of alcohol leads to arthropod races.
You appear to be onto something, UCS.
You’re going to miss this again this year. You may drive though the town and not even know when the race season is on.

About 15 miles from HH country.
😱🙀
No, I don’t think I mind missing that one.
Paywalled. Which town? Jersey Shore and dry – that’s unexpected.
https://newjersey.news12.com/peta-urges-ocean-city-to-replace-hermit-crab-races-with-robot-crabs
Huh. We used to hit AC every summer in the 70s. I loved all the shabby honky tonk feel of all the goings-on.
At first, I misread that as you started the air conditioning when the weather hit 70 degrees.
Huh. Ocean City. I would have guessed Wildwood. Then I looked it up and confused Wildwood with Wildwood Crest.
My dad grew up in LBI, my mom in Margate. I was born in Atlantic City. When I was born we lived in Longport.
Is that South Jersey Shore enough?
Read elsewhere that the prairie potholes decision in ’24 had significant impact on farmers, so interesting to see the conservation vs. farmer division.
What I wonder is whether the restriction as constituted is actually the narrowest limitation required to keep the ducks in a row. Part of me thinks the rulemakes were over-restrictive in picking the distance.
The ’24 rule was apparently a significant change from the preceding “interpretation” – more restrictive on farm activity.
Oh, I just remembered – the other view was from one of OMWC‘s links, ironically disparaging Chevron deference.
Now this is a messy one. I don’t want to lose the ducks, but don’t think this is a good approach to the question. No, I don’t know what a good approach would be. I dislike the entitlement of the hunters trying to press on the property rights of the farmers, I dislike the attitudes of farmers in general these days.
Can I dislike everyone in this story?
Defer to the experts! The Executive branch is certainly the proper place for regulations to be drafted, also simultaneously the head of the Executive must have no authority to fire any of those experts! Wouldn’t want the branches the Constitution gave authority to to waste time exercising that authority that would better be spent expanding the numbers and power of those fine Fairfax County technocrats! Besides if we need day to day oversight to ensure that those technocrats are doing the right™ thing, that is why the District Courts have the power to draft detailed injunctive orders that apply nationwide. Clearly courts are the best managers for the Executive, and clearly the Executive employees are the best legislators!
No.
Science lives on challenges to the established theories. Experts must be embattled constantly, their opinions questioned, the argument kept going.
Otherwise they are priests of an unwanted faith.
They aren’t scientists. They are policy makers. Everything they do is either something the Constitution denies the Federal Government power to do, or something the Constitution explicitly entrusts to the political branches who are supposed to be accountable to the electorate, who in turn is supposed to be informed and moral enough to …ok, sorry I can’t even say that with a straight face
Doesn’t seem like anyone but my crazy ass has brought up the black in Charlotte who was running around attacking white women while ranting about Trump and white people. The guy who was decidedly not charged with a hate crime thus far and who had been arrested like 14 other times.
It’s been mentioned like eight times.
Where at?
“Where at?”
Where the white women a̵t̵ were?
On this very site and on my Twitter feed, also you shouldn’t end a sentence with a preposition.
Yea it’s on Twitter you putz. The point was it wasn’t brought up here (or on most major media sites). A lot of people here may actually not know about it.
The only mention here was me in the middle of the night.
Do you ever actually have a point beyond being a tedious, useless cunt?
I hadn’t heard about it.
What is there to say about it? We have decided that it is racist to put insane black people in prison or in asylums for longer than a week or two. Discussing that fact makes me enraged, and the solution involves violence I am unwilling to spend my remaining years in prison for.
Me to.
*cracks open new CokeZ* Cubs are making it competitive. We’ve won eight-straight, and you’re gonna lose, but we’re not making it easy. That UCS/DEG conversation is another sizzle to enjoy on my burner.
Huh. I also started a Hinge account today and gonna add a Bumble. Sure. Fuck it. Apparently, it has a separate ‘get to know folk’ version. I shall see. I s’pose. (Oooh! Cubs just made it a bit MORE competitive!) I’m not really expecting anything, but it’s a good place to start. (Oh. Huh. That works both for social stuff AND the Cubs.)
Kinda taking this weekend as a reset, zero obligation, rest bit. Friday’s paycheck was satisfying. Sent a note to neurologist and have a meeting with voca rehab folk this week. Oooh. And psychiatrist. Gonna start perusing ’round for work options and what the scene basically looks like, these days. I *do* think my inability to learn the escrow/ SureClose system ‘in time’ was because of not enough proper time to train. But that ‘learn new storage’ system has never been too good, and that has been gnawing at me a bit. Hrm.
Last time we talked, MN Munchkin prompted ideas of us moving in together as roommates, something we’ve discussed for a few years. Not un-seriously. She’s struggling worse in Saint Cloud. (We’ve kinda made a pact to get married when we’re 45 and haven’t found anyone, just to have that person. Quite not un-seriously.)
We’d be a fun sitcom, as well. Brown, abused orphan who detests the Left welfarery at Dodd County Family Services. (Was laid off. damn.) We shall see how Work Search begins, but trying to actually give myself some chill time. Goin’ well, I’d say.
I also started a Hinge account today
Hinge seems to be going downhill, which is a shame because it wasn’t bad for a while despite being owned by Match Group (same company that owns Tinder).
Don’t look now – it’s another communist nepo-baby in Zoh’s orbit, advocating communist shit. Her parents must be so proud.
Her father apparently knew what it meant to work. I’d be interested to hear his thoughts.

WTF does that taste like? 🤢
From what I hear it’s greasy with a hint of trichinosis.
Actually a lot of Trichinosis – cook it thoroughly.
@ Rhy – as luck would have it, I’m watching the same Columbo episode you saw last week. Hector Elizondo as a sheikh.
Oooooh, that could be my evening Media thingy! It’s creepy Dad’s likely watching it downstairs. Pluto shall be checked. First, gotta take Peabody out. His Cone of Shame still on as his surgery wound heals. He’ll try to smell something on the ground and he can’t reach his nose to it. On concrete, it bangs and scrapes along and keeps him at an inch distance, and it’s just too damn funny.
I’m rotating around various Treks on Pluto.
I’m all Columbo’ed out I’ve seen all of them too many times lately.
Batman is on post-Svengoolie.
Svengoolie rings a bell… I think I had that in NYC and it’s on a channel I don’t get anymore.
MeTV
Rancid grease.
Mmmm where do I sign up?
Just installed Moncole. I’m using the dark reader extension and the bar where the user name of commenters is displayed is blue and the name unreadable without highlighting. Anyone else have this going on?
Just disabled dark reader for this site, but this is one of the sites I’d most want it for given the bright white. This is not a case where white is right I’m afraid. My eyes are going on me. May need peepers soon. Getting in the way of my Firstin’.
Use the “filter” mode on Dark Reader and the blue bar goes away.
Yea played with settings on it to adjust layout some so it’s not so bright, but I get the features of Monocle still like the new posts highlighted. Thanks.
Fuck you, gun Jesus. I don’t need a cZ75 Legend.
Yes you do!
Not at $1299.

“Old-Timers’ Day in The Bronx took on an unexpected somber tone when Tommy John released a statement through the Yankees in which he said “goodbye to everyone” as he battles health issues.
“I want to thank the Yankees organization [and] the Steinbrenner family for giving me this opportunity to say goodbye to everyone, along with all the friends [and] fans who followed me throughout my 26-year career.”
—
Of John’s 288 career victories — the highest total of anyone not in the Hall of Fame aside from scandal-scarred Roger Clemens — 164 came after his surgery.

John, in 2024, revealed he had bladder cancer, but it’s unclear if that is what he is dealing with now.”

Hope the best. Crazy story, and damn good job Dr. Frank Jobe. (Rant against coaches ‘teaching’ speed rather than location, on hold)
Mini-rant on why people are obnoxious. I was looking for an extension to download Youtube videos for Firefox. Most of them are basically trying to get people to pay. This is the internet and I don’t pay for shit.
Went digging for some other way or best way to do it. You run into a bunch of people recommending yt dlp. Shit you have to use with command prompts which I suspect they want to show off that they actually know how to run all the commands they want off the top of the head and they just keep telling people who don’t want to mess with all that on top of downloading latest python and shit that it’s easy.
There are multiple tools you can download that keep the yt dlp updated but create a GUI around it (and this is the basis as I understand it for the browser extensions anyway that fucks are trying to charge people for to begin with, though I’m just going off a quick search here).
So basically you don’t need the fucking command prompts or any of that bullshit. And the application itself is simple, sleek, and fast with no manual updating.
Of course none of these assholes would just provide those options to the people asking on sites like Reddit.
I use an app called “4K Video Downloader+”. You get some number of free downloads per day. It updates frequently to keep abreast of Youtube changes. Works great for me.
The one I have is based completely off the freeware. It’s just going to be for maybe some Youtube stuff here or there.
My main beef is with people over complicating their recommendations. Like how many people want to fuck with command prompts and python over a simple application?
Even if you know how all the commands in the world I’d rather just click two buttons.
Mini-rant on why people are obnoxious
Because they claim to be firsters?
I am dismayed that my lovely father-daughter bonding moment last night was Heidi’d.
I don’t know what that means or whether it’s good or bad.
The Heidi game. My weekly Dunham installment was derailed by technical difficulties.
OH. I thought you were talking about like an actual thing with your daughter.
The glitch started right as I got the new laptop up and running so I was like is this the site being it’s usually glitchy self or is something weird going on with my end. Had to test elsewhere.
Sorry, that was unfortunate timing, indeed. *Playful rub behind ear*

A more likelihood would be to consolidate your school(s), give the kids an extra hour’s bus ride (each way) and raise your taxes to pay for the buses.

I don’t think it’s the pot so much as the nature of the hangout.
I will admit I sometimes cross the street rather than pass through the sketchy crowd that is always hanging out at the one near me.
Southern Ireland to start campaign against those who question their propaganda
Never mind how much of this is a response to the campaigns from governments and the elite who want to pressure men into believing they’re broken women.
How dare you try to discredit any of the incredibly necessary work of the Department of Children and Equality… LOL WTF

There are times when I believe that life is a dream because everything seems so unreal.
In the reality of my youth, girls wore dresses, boys wore pants. We knew who was who. It wasn’t discriminatory, it was reality and we enjoyed our gender roles.
