Saturday evening Links

Ahh, the smoke has finally cleared and there is blue sky above it. We’re in the middle of August, so it’s time for the weather to start cooling and moving into fall, and the best time of the year. This year’s garden has been a little wonky in that I’m getting a lot of plant growth, but production is down over previous years. We’ll see how it ends up at the end of September.

Links?

Because they’re white, diploma addled elitists?

You have almost three million acres, get over it. Oh, and you lost.

“They’re eating the dogs! They’re eating the cats!”

All I can think of is Luigi is vying for a nicer cell.

“Nice beaver.” “Thanks, I just had it stuffed.”

Who needs borders?

I’m curious to see how this fleshes out. Given the region, I don’t have much hope for a positive outcome.

I think he was denied a succulent Chinese meal.

If this guy wins in November, it’s a glaring sign we’re pretty much done. The barbarians are well inside the gate.

Okay, that’s it for me. Back to weed duty and seeing if there might be some produce to gather. Peace out, Glibbies.

He’ll be in a cell by himself. Which is nicer in a way.

      Less sex that way though.

I’ve heard it’s good for a back injury.

    • rhywun

I heard this is all so he will never be charged with murder.

The little shit and his sick fans will make hay of that.

      • Spudalicious

The thing is, a state murder conviction is a 25-life sentence. He’s still eligible for parole in 25 years. If he gets life on the federal charge, he would need a pardon or commutation to get out.

Therefore, educated voters and non-college voters hear politicians’ promises through very different ears. To educated voters, big promises about government improving people’s lives sound great, or at least plausible. To non-college voters, those promises sound like just more empty talk.

One might even call it fatuous nonsense.

It’s true that it’s not fair that social democratsβ€”and again, most of these candidates are really social democrats, not democratic socialistsβ€”should pay the electoral price for this. After all, it wasn’t they who’ve been screwing over the working class for four decades. But they’re stuck with the reality that the screwing has made working-class people extremely suspicious of those promising them big things.

Never mind the part where they demeaned and belittled actual work for decades, and piled credentialist roadblocks in the way of advancement.

    • rhywun

No, they are communists. The DSA website makes it *abundantly* clear.

  5. The Late P Brooks

but second and more importantly, really just explain things to working-class voters in a way that understands and assumes their skepticism.

Speak slowly and use small words. They’re not very bright.

      • cyto

        Definitely.

Teaching robotics to elementary kids, I spend the first half of our time just learning how to build things like these basic connections.

        Gears are particularly hard.

So we build levers, gear sets, drive trains, etc.

All from scratch, from basic principles, without being given a plan or detailed instruction. Just “use what we learned to make this climb stairs” or whatever.

It is fascinating to watch. For weeks they flounder around and not much gets accomplished (visibly)

        And then…

The knowledge reaches a tipping point and they start building stuff and iterating designs like a bunch of experienced engineers.

Building kits is paint by numbers. This video shows the path to the real stuff.

Jeebus I sprained or tweaked something in my left hippal or groinal region. No idea how but after returning from some shopping today out of nowhere I was yelping upon rising from a chair. It’s easing off thank goodness but not good when I am scheduled to travel tomorrow.

    Is this getting old?

    • R.J.

      Yes.

      • rhywun

It is crazy. An entirely new pain to me.

    • Evan from Evansville

Eek. Dad’s done it many times and says the first x minutes of a sprained ankle is the worst pain ever. He does note, however, that it at least kinda goes away after that. Stiff, annoying and still painful, but not that biting, or rather, shrieking pain.

I’m pleased I’ve never sprained or even twisted anything. My groaning hippo is just fine, as well.

Flying, yeah? Getting there will suck, regardless You can get wheelchairs at the airport though. (Uh. Some airports?) I think I’ve both arranged it ahead of time and also have been able to ‘snag’ one there. May be an option? Best luck. OH. This is the move-move weekend? *expression dramatically changes*

Working-class people’s lives in these last couple of decades have just gotten much harder, inching ever closer to the precipice of job loss, default, indignity. Working-class people live in regular if not constant fear of these things. Educated people, in an economy that leans more and more toward rewarding them, do not.

And yet, they never ask why there is that fear. Retards.

      • rhywun

LOL that is what I hoped for.

      • rhywun

I sometimes wonder if those jobs are paying more than welfare pays.

      • juris imprudent

half the fast food joints in town have β€œNow Hiring” signs up

Every place you would expect to be a minimum wage job is offering well above minimum wage.

      • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

Yes, because working fast food, no matter the wages, really creates pride in life.

Don’t be dense Hyp, people want work they can feel proud of, and the hollowing out of manufacturing has been one of the most destructive things that has happened post WWII.

      • The Hyperbole

I’m not sure working at a press stamping out car parts instills more pride than flipping burgers, but I could be wrong. And obv. the contractor workers can advance to being skilled carpenters/ masons, tradesmen of all sorts. But as I’ve said, before north central Ohio may well be in a different universe than the one the rest of you people live in.

  15. UnCivilServant

The hazard of so many people POIA-ing body cam videos and posting them online is that I grow ever more in favor of excessive force against these … “suspects and bystanders”.

I still think the cops are assholes, but they do not apply nearly as many beatdowns as people deserve.

    • UnCivilServant

      *FOIA-ing

    • juris imprudent

The problem is that the cops can’t confine themselves to only dealing with the people on their own level. It’s the spill over that is intolerable.

  16. Fourscore

    Thanks for the music, Spud

My garden moved to Mrs F’s unused flower beds by the door. I can’t keep up with the big garden, I planted a few cukes, tomatoes, cabbages and kohlrabi. The flower beds are slightly raised so I can work them easier. I only had a few plants of each, the kohlrabi was the best I’ve ever grown, big, not woody and fast growing. We’re eating cukes every day, tomatoes just starting to ripen.

The flower beds have black dirt, I found a washtub of rabbit shit in the woodshed. Dig a hole, toss in a small handful of 10-10-10, a shovelful of rabbit shit, mix together, fill the hole with black dirt and put the plant in the middle, water. Everything I transplanted grew big, fast and productive.

I planted the old garden with some corn, watermelons and about 8 apple trees I started from seed. Used the same technique but with a small trailer full of chicken shit. A couple of the little trees died but I can make more. I’ll used the same technique next year, more apple trees.

One day in the future the new owner will curse me for all the damned apples but the neighbors will love him.

I got stuck yesterday on two long roads where the car ahead of me decided to do about 5MPH under the speed limit. The guy finally turned off the road, and the car ahead of him was promptly doing about 4MPH under the limit.

The road finally becomes two lanes in each direction, and I moved into the left lane to get ahead of the guy at the upcoming traffic light. But just before the light there was an asshole parked in the left lane trying to pull into a gas station where there’s clearly a no left turn sign.

On the bright side, there were a bunch of lefty protesters on the side of the road (some had “Ban ice” signs while others had “Save our health care”). I gave them all the finger. Probably not stoic, but I felt good doing it.

Fairly Big Moment time: I’ve tightened my Crest Quest piece into a stand-alone essay I’ll submit to places outside these parts. Edited and streamlined, using only my drawing and the pic of my skull bracketed before being reattached. (I’ll let ’em know I’ve got many gory more.) Using Gemini cuz I draft in Google, it recommends The Guardian (“Experience” series); Vox (“First Person”); Slate (Human Interest / Life); The Sun Magazine. (Yikes. Those are our favorite places, aren’t they?)

This edit for outsiders is the ‘polite hook’ I was looking for, a tight way to introduce me, the extent of The Incident, and tease other stories to come.

Like my parents, writing is what I’m best at and enjoy most, and given my situation and my skills being AI’d away, etc, it seems foolish to not play the hand I’ve been dealt. I think my candor and whimper-free voice are strong selling points. I’m also pleased my ‘careers’ post-Incident (and time overseas) remain relevant and ongoing. Oddly ‘evergreen’ stories.

Last night I caught the episode of Battlestar Galactica where the final 5 hear “Watchtower” echoing in the background and are drawn to each other.

Spoiler alert if you never watched the show and want to.

Wow. What a moment. Colonel Tigh has a speech about serving as an officer for 50 years, fighting in 2 wars, watching his friends die…

“My name is Saul Tigh. I’m an officer in the Colonial Fleet. Whatever else I am, whatever else it means, that’s the man I want to be. And if I die today, that’s the man I’ll be.”

Pretty awesome SciFi writing. We are who we our actions. We are who we chose to be.
