Sunday Morning Kids are Back Links

by | Aug 16, 2026 | Daily Links | 148 comments

It’s that time of year again, the schools are about to re-open and students and faculty are trickling back in. So our café at noon is looking like a menagerie of danger hair, piercings to render heads as ocarinas, look-at-me hot pants (on the guys), fuzzy slippers and pajama pants (on the girls)… and resigned-looking parents helping the kids move in. Most of the looks of resignation are related to tuition and boarding checks freshly written so Junior can get her degree in Intersectional Puppetry.

Birthdays today include a guy who was a little fish; a guy whose stories were amazing; a guy who liked to put on a dress and prance around the world’s largest beach; a piece of shit of almost Wilsonian caliber; a guy who would be the best possible Middle East head of state were he still alive; a guy for whom you should do nothing until you hear from him; a poetic SugarFree; the best pianist you don’t know but ought to; half of my parents’ favorite duo; a pianist you DO know and ought to; half of the most famous tennis team; recipient of the second most famous hit in NFL history; the only valid Catwoman; and a model of corruption that has been widely emulated, but rarely equaled.

The Links, however, are free of corruption.

I’m sure this will work just as well as it did last time.

This will, of course, be required when Medicare For All is mandated under the new Ocasio-Cortez administration.

Trump’s fault.

Let’s be honest, they ARE assholes.

As a Ravens fan, I heartily approve of this suggestion.

This whole case was weird and I predict it’s about to get weirder.

There are no pervert glasses, just perverts wearing glasses.

I swear, I don’t have this app. But more seriously, I can’t see how anyone making up these images can be prosecuted if the First Amendment has any shred of meaning left.

I admit, I do drink a lot of coffee.

“Attempt no landings there.”

OK, this is Boomer as fuck. The Old Guy is old.

Modern America has built a business model out of demonizing the person next door. To keep the money flowing, people must stay angry enough to click, donate and hate.

Or, y’know… people raised in a high-trust society see the hordes of diversity come in, spouting anti-Western slogans while committing horrifying acts of random violence and stealing everything that isn’t nailed down (and some things that are).

    • (((Jarflax

Diversity is our strength! It says so right in the Catechism of the Faith! Heretics must burn.

    • rhywun

And that is just one example of the damage the left has done over decades. Every single thing they do is calculated to cause the resentment described in the article.

I don’t think prosecuting people for making the images is the point. The point is that Elon is an apostate and apostates must be destroyed by any means possible.

    Fuck equality.

    • (((Jarflax

The left stole a base when they conflated bigotry with discrimination. Bigotry is not discriminating, it is the substitution of an unconsidered certainty for judgment. Discrimination simply means judgment between things. Then we raised four straight generations by teaching them that discrimination is bigotry and ended up with people who think it is racist to object to bad behavior.

      • Drake

Pattern recognition is racism. Action, or avoidance based on the patterns you recognize, that is discrimination.

The alleged gunmen used powerful firearms that were legally obtained. Australia had a record 4.1 million firearms last year, the government has said, with more than 1.1 million of those in New South Wales, its most populous state.

    almost Wilsonian caliber

So it happens I’m reading The Road to War about the run up of U.S. involvement in WWI. It’s been educational, since I tended to blame Wilson and in fact he was more of a dupe than an actual mover. The Brits fucked us over seven ways to Sunday, which is just one more layer of stupidity in that whole war. I have come to a whole new level of loathing for TR, and quite a new appreciation for what a total piece of shit Henry Cabot Lodge was. And strangely I am beginning to better understand Walter Lippman, but coming to the opposite conclusion; he believed in experts running the govt and ‘shaping’ public opinion. I of course see it as a matter of shrinking government so that it has less and less impact on the people. Since WWI is the most perfect example of allowing the morons too much power.

MUSC 219: Listening Otherwise: Sound, Music, and Identity

Reorientation is a process of changing directions; figuring out, again, where you are in relationship to your environment. This discussion-based course explores music and sound through such relational thinking, foregrounding the multitude of ways of being-in-the-world. We will explore musical works, histories, composers, performers, and sound-experiences, through concepts drawn from feminism, gender studies, and queer theory. Through critical readings and listening, as well as sharing our own experiences, we seek to question normative narratives around music and sound.

“Online the “naked” look is credited as part of wider trends, including the “clean girl aesthetic” that has become synonymous with slicked-back hair and dewy skin. Dominated by wealthy, white women, it has been criticised for co-opting black and brown beauty habits. Ranking “naked” nails as more desirable than statement styles, especially when nails and nail art are so rooted in race, further taps into this, with some critics considering it a form of erasure.

Irene Shelley, the editor of Black Beauty and Hair magazine, says the “trend itself isn’t the problem: minimalism is a valid choice for anyone”. However, she says a problem arises when “a bare aesthetic gets coded as more sophisticated or more professional than a fuller, more expressive one that’s historically been coded as Black or working-class. Nails should be allowed to be a form of self-expression without a hierarchy attached to them.””

I bought new 10 round NJ compliant Glock magazines. I’m no t sure who I am supposed to hate more, NJ, BATF or Glock.

Putting the 10th round in was crazy ridiculous and impossible in one of them.

I read that Glock basically got the biggest strongest guy they could to try to shove 11 rounds into it. If he succeeded they made it tighter.

I had to disassemble three brand new mags, remove some extra plastic flash that I think was my problem in the one magazine and I judiciously removed some material from the follower. They all now load better and fully. However, they are still crazy stiff compared to my old banned magazines.

I’ve got them fully loaded and hopefully compressing thing and compressing the springs. Guess I’ll leave them loaded much as I’d prefer not to do so.

I may buy extra springs and cut a coil and see what happens. Once again fuck NJ.

    • UnCivilServant

I’m confused at that procedure by Glock. In the DPRNY, making a magazine take below its normal capacity is accomplished by adding a pin in a spot that simply stops the magazine follower from going down further. So you get normal spring pressure for ten, then you hit the steel bar and it doesn’t go further.

What are they doing to stop at ten if they need to iteratively abuse it like that?

      • Sensei

This is factory. You can pay to pin in NJ, but it can’t be readily reversible.

So the factory Glock nerfed magazines turn the double stack into a semi single stack. They are staggered, but not as much as they could be or are in a double stack. It’s accomplished by putting bulges in the metal magazine liner.

The last round pushes the follower basically to the plate and fully compresses the spring.

      • UnCivilServant

I haven’t looked into what the effect would be to unpin my nerfed CZ Magazines. But the Glock process sounds awful.

The numbers worsen with each successive generation. The cohort born in the 2000s registers the highest levels of distrust ever recorded by the project. A significant portion of young adults operate under the functional premise that everyone else is a threat.

The situation gets significantly uglier from there. A comprehensive 25-country survey published by Pew Research Center earlier this year found that Americans do not merely distrust one another. Increasingly, they see their fellow citizens as morally bankrupt. American citizens are far more likely to view their fellow countrymen as fundamentally evil than citizens of the other surveyed nations.

I think we can all agree it was the fascist white supremacist right who brought us to this sorry state.

This moral panic created an environment of pure, unadulterated contempt. For more than ten years, tracing back to President Trump’s rather surreal 2015 escalator descent, America’s dominant political emotion has evolved from anger into deep, structural disgust.

    Getting things done

Success through failure is especially evident in the housing policies. Mamdani has brought in socialists who called for “seizing the means of production” (as he has) and wiping out private ownership of housing.

Most recently, Mamdani has embraced figures such as Tracy Rosenthal, the privileged daughter of a well-known music industry figure who has refused to pay rent. Despite her family’s wealth, she has been effectively squatting on property. The co-founder of the Los Angeles Tenants Union and co-author of “Abolish Rent: How Tenants Can End the Housing Crisis,” Rosenthal is a darling of the far left. In New York, she declared that rent is “a ransom,” and “We pay rent at the peril of our need.”

Rosenthal portrays landlords as bloodsuckers and rallied the left to refuse to pay rent even though “if we don’t make this payment, our landlords can call on agents of state violence who can use physical force to throw us outdoors.”

Rosenthal has perfected not only the squatter culture but also the use of regulations to take effective control of properties. In allegedly squatting in California, Rosenthal reportedly pushed to get her building placed under the Housing Preservation Department’s Alternative Enforcement Program. Under that, a landlord must fix problems or risk losing the property.

Does “fixing the problems” include executing the squatters and stuffing the bodies in the crawlspace?

    • rhywun

“Portland Public Schools went a step further by banning a mother from her children’s school for a year because she engaged in sidewalk advocacy against its secret gender curriculum and social transitions of gender-confused students, claiming her “hate speech” violated its harassment policy, according to a new First and Fourteenth Amendment lawsuit.

Allison Roberts missed her son’s graduation from Meriwether Lewis Elementary School because of the ban, and his younger sister remains at risk of transgender indoctrination from the school’s refusal to notify and let parents opt out their children from such materials and get consent to treat them as the opposite sex, the suit says….

She belatedly received materials related to the identity flower and other “gender ideology” assignments for both children, revealing the former came from the LGBTQ activist group GLSEN and was “part of a larger lesson encouraging children to question their sex and gender identity” and even consider that their gender changes day to day, the suit says. (GLSEN rebranded to “Glisten” earlier this year to hide its gay and lesbian origins.)

Roberts also learned students were taught about “puberty blockers for transgender youth.””

    Sob story

“Every time you wake up, it feels like — what’s going to happen next?” says the mother who asked NPR to identify her by her initials, A.W. “What else are they going to take away from us and our kids, to keep them thriving?”

A.W., who is the parent of a transgender teenager, asked not to use her full name because she fears her family could be targeted or her children could be taken away by the federal administration.

The population affected by the rule the administration finalized on Tuesday is quite small. Health research organization KFF estimates there are 130,000 transgender people under age 18 who live in states where gender-affirming care is still available — many states have banned the care after a flurry of state laws in the last few years.

A.W.’s family is in that small group. After her husband’s company went out of business, they lost their health benefits, and are now enrolled in Medicaid. They also rely on food assistance, and A.W. says those cuts have been hard on them too.

A longtime Republican herself, A.W. says she never would have believed her family would need this help. “But we do need it,” she says. “We need it really badly right now because my husband is still unemployed.”

She says she knew the rule restricting access to transgender care through Medicaid was coming, since it was proposed in December. Still, when it was published, she felt panicked. “The initial just — what are we going to do?”

That’s what she gets for being a Republican.

I wonder if they ever get around to explaining what this essential gender affirming treatment might be.
