At 35% it has become obvious they have adopted a pimp – ho style business model. My proposal is to do something that will terrify a fair number of you: Get to know your local merchant of ———-. Know him well enough to open a tab. If you fail to close your tab at the end of the month is he still going to charge you a 20% gratuity for doing the honorable thing instead of taking your CC information and spending thousands of dollars on merchandise from his favorite OnlyFans account in the Philippines? The suit was filed in Merrimack County Superior Court Monday by Kelly Wieser of Campton and David Bates of Warner, and seeks an emergency injunction to block Secretary of State David Scanlan from putting the question on general election ballots.

I also got into fights with their elementary teachers about New Math. New Math tried to make math fun and intuitive. Instead of learning the basics by rote, there was a lot of questions about what happens when you add three apples to 2 apples. The answer wasn’t 5. It was a picture of 5 apples.

I saw somewhere a theory that 60 years ago, teaching was one of the few professions that was open to women, so a lot of bright ambitious gals went into it.
As feminism opened more doors for women, a lot of them went into more rewarding careers in other industries. That meant that teaching was only getting Education Majors to enter it.
This has led to the deteriorating outcomes.
School districts force you to get an Ed major to teach rather than having any actual skills.

I attended an information session held by two state representatives who were involved in passing the property tax cap legislation. They picked the 6% cap because it well below the average percentage for administration costs. If I remember correctly, the average NH school district administration cost is about 20% of the district’s budget.

NH has state wide standardized testing. As far as I know, the scores are not a factor in the per-pupil state aid to local schools.
There is a case before the NH Supreme Court where the state government has asked the Court to overturn the Claremont and related decisions. The entire state mechanism for payments to local schools is based on those decisions. I haven’t dug into all the cases, but I suspect if overturned the state could add test scores to the state aid formula. Next time I talk to friendly state representatives, I’ll ask about test scores and state aid.

It’s a hot mess and would still be the same bottom 10% teaching.

Tipping got out of control when the lockdowns ended. Everyone was so happy to be able to go back to the bars and restaurants that they over tipped. Worse than sailors from the Abe Lincoln in Thailand on shore leave.
Like all windfalls, too many people thought it would go on forever. The servers didn’t realize that the huge tips were a one time thing. Or should have been.
The other factor that came into play were the new tip screens that started showing up everywhere. Instead of being allowed to tip what they felt like, those set amounts of tips forced too many people to tip more than they wanted. Personally, I didn’t tip anything if the minimum “suggested” tip was greater than 15%. Felt a bit guilty, but the only way it will stop is if enough people stop playing along with it.
Tipping is also one of the biggest sore points my Asian relatives have with America.
They always bend my ear about how dumb we are to put up with it. They point out that there is no tipping in Japan or Korea and service is excellent. I have to agree with them. I also try to explain to them that if you want to get decent bar service, you better tip.

My understanding is yes, although I’ve only been getting cutting haircuts for about the last year and a half, having previously buzzed my head at home since age 9. My guy charges $40 and I always give him $50, cash (if I’m tipping, I always try to do so in cash so the recipient has the option of declaring it or not). He’s a good dude, knows my gourd, and gives you the old school “Let’s sit around and shoot the shit” experience.
I’ve never hired movers as an adult. My dad tipped the crew that moved us to our new place in 2001, and they deserved every penny they got. Between my dad’s nearing-disorder hoarding and the painting equipment we stored for his business, they did a lot of heavy lifting and got everything done incredibly quickly. If I was paying somebody to move the minimal amount of shit I have now? I don’t know. If it was a local yokel I might slip him some extra cash at the end of the day. If it’s a bigger moving company, probably not.
When I moved here to Texas and needed an immediate local job to get my bills in order, a couple of the national hotel chains with branches off the interstate were hiring. Maids were getting paid more than front desk. That said, Whataburger, Wendy’s and Walmart were all hiring at the same time and paid more than either job.

Schools typically get extra cash per ESL student in the district. If they disenrol they lose the cash. If they stay on the rolls and don’t show up they get the cash.
We’re not 100% sure about our district but we believe that if we enrolled our boy then home schooled him the district would get to count him as we have not moved out of the district.
They should not get paid for services not rendered. Chargeback for all students not fully educated, regardless of attendence. Refund to the taxpayers.

So I’ve got an email reply which opened up interesting new realities about how the world apparently works, these days.
So a recruiter, Alexandra, set me up with the interview with Abigail, who’s in Cox’ “Talent Acquisition” realm. I don’t have contact info for Abigail or the other two. (I really shoulda remembered to ask for that today, too. Meh.) According to Gemini: this is now standard corporate recruiting. So I write to the recruiter and they send it to the interviewers, and THEN it gets attached to my file along with resume, cover letter, etc. My thank you note is part of the daily hand-off routine, it apparently guarantees it reaches all of them and gets “permanently tied to your application.”
Huh. Life with 8+ billion interconnected folk is goofy. I easily see how young folk just maaay be getting fucked from how impersonal the world is. That empty ‘LOOK AT ME!’ impulse directly leads to non-binary trans duck-fucking, right there.
That was my experience getting hired at my current job and interviewing for a half dozen others over the last 3 years. Third party recruitment agency places the job ads. Resume goes through ML-based ATS. The ones with the right combination of keywords might get looked at by an actual human. They follow up with a pre-screener to see if you’re legit and capable of punctuality, then hand you off to the company’s internal HR people for the interview portion. If they didn’t like you, you only hear back from the recruiter (if at all).
It’s definitely impersonal, and definitely means that companies are missing out on potentially good candidates that may not fit the exact dataset. The solution is to maintain a gigantic network of online and offline business contacts, but not everybody is really equipped for that (myself included).
I am SOOOO glad the company that hired (really, acquired) me in 2014 and canned me in 2018 hired me back in 2020.

I’m about half way though though a 400 page bio “Patrick Henry, Champion of Liberty” by Jon Kukla . A good lead up with the break down of the British efforts to rule the colonies from a far. The Revolutionary War is just starting at this point, early 1775. A lot of familiar names appearing, from the Declaration of Independence (which I haven’t got to, just yet) and the early days of agitation.
Trying to picture us today going through what our early forefathers did is hard to imagine. The willingness but sometimes reluctance to put their fortunes and lives on the line, for the dreams of political/personal freedom is hard to understand, when today an internet joke can get one’s ass hauled off to jail.

I finished a 400 page bio of “Doc Holliday”, from his ancestral home in Georgia to his adventures in the gambling halls of the unsettled West, his ties to Wyatt Earp and family and of course the OK Corral affair. Many of us have seen at least one movie that purports to be an accurate portrayal of the shoot out. The author uses a lot of “may haves”, “could haves”,and “it’s possibles” that leave open the question of total validity. In any case it’s an interesting Old West story that is entertaining and we can live in the mining camps and frontier towns vicariously.
The book has moved on to a new home however
