The funnest part of living in the Gulch is the overheard conversations. This past week, we had a meeting of the Business Association to discuss PR to get people to come here and spend money. Satisfyingly capitalist. When the meeting was over, one of the shop owners here (a standard-issue radical leftist, but I love her anyway) said, “I need a drink. Let’s go to your café and grab some wine.” Fine idea. The café had just closed but invoking owner’s privilege, I got a bottle from behind the bar and poured us some glasses. One of our employees was just finishing her closing duties and decided to join us- cool, she’s one of the older ones, also a standard-issue radical leftist, but I love her as well. Wine all around. The two of them started chatting and, inevitably, within three minutes, they started whining about Trump, who lives rent-free in their brains.
“Lake America, holy shit, can you believe that orange turd?”
“Yeah, Google changed the name on their maps, too, so I immediately removed Google from all my devices.”
“Me too.”
I piped up, “Troll Level Three complete.”
They both looked startled and one of them admitted, “Yeah stuff like that is just his way of distraction from actually important issues…”
Wow, I thought, they may actually be getting it.
“…like the Epstein files and Orange Turd’s involvement in child trafficking.”
Sigh.

In the meantime, let’s mention some birthdays, like the guy who invented the cow; another prolific author whose books badly needed editing; an old school redistributionist; a guy who might be the most responsible for how shitty TV is; a guy who was last in his class until he met Adolph Zukor; a great fraud and apologist for evil; a guy whose death was commemorated with 4 minutes and 33 seconds of silence; a guy who woke up to Suzanne Pleshette; a slightly more refined version of L. Ron Hubbard; a guy who is most generously thought of as a child abuser; a woman who… I’ll be in my bunk; a guy who impregnated several of my teenage fantasies; a guy whose last words were, reputedly, “Mama mia, let me go!“; a guy who is often interesting and rarely correct; and a chick famous for being nuts.

Speaking of nuts, here’s Links.

Another master troll. He learned well.

“It’s twue, it’s twue!”

Coming here next. I mean, we can’t just have anyone try to do science, can we?

Kayfabe writ large.

The knives are out. And we can have a pretty good guess who’s behind the campaign.

And of course, this sort of smear looks extremely familiar.

My question is why you would even go in there.

It would have been easier just to claim he was identifying as a girl.

The real villain isn’t even mentioned: Jose Andres, the PR-seeking celebrity chef who sent his staff into an active war zone for his own moral preening from the safety of his DC mansion.

This is totally retarded.

Yes, the Old Guy was at this show. Front row. The Arkestra was at least 50 years ahead of its time.

“The Mercator map, which has been in common use since the 16th Century, has come in for criticism as it shows Africa as being of similar in size to Greenland, even though it is actually 14 times larger.”

To be fair, it’s cold in Greenland.

    • UnCivilServant

The Mercator projection is useful for navigation. You draw a line between two points on it and that angle is the heading that you would need on the globe.

The fact that the least advanced continent appears relatively smaller because of its equatorial position is immaterial.

“The forelady of the jury, I was so proud when she indicated … that one person would not listen to the law, and then she came back immediately, stating that this is 11 to 1 for an acquittal, there was one individual who recognized there was reasonable doubt, and refused to apply the law.”

      • UnCivilServant

There was no doubt, reasonable or otherwise.

Defense stipluated that she murdered the children.

She was not so out of it as to have no idea what she was doing, it was supposed to be a murder-suicide, but she fucked up the suicide.

        Guilty.

      • DEG

I wonder WTF were the other 11 thinking?

They were the “not guilty by reason of insanity” block. I found the MA jury instructions for when the defendant claims insanity. The prosecution must prove beyond reasonable doubt that the defendant was not insane. The defendant has no burden to prove anything. So, they thought the prosecution didn’t meet its burden. None of us were there, and the media is not going to report everything that happened at trial. But, it seems to me that the prosecution fucked up.

      • UnCivilServant

Her own actions removed doubt from me. I need evidence of insanity.

The prosecution must prove beyond reasonable doubt that the defendant was not insane.

        That’s nuts.

      • Grumbletarian

I would say trying to kill herself after killing her kids is an indicator that she knew what she was doing was either wrong or illegal. She was certainly not fully in her right mind, but no so far gone that the insanity defense applies here.

      • PutridMeat

UCS: Her own actions removed doubt from me. I need evidence of insanity.

DEG: That’s nice. That’s not it works in Massachusetts.

That’s exactly how it works. Everywhere. Juries are not required to follow the judges instructions, nor the law, either as written or as presented to them by the judge.

And that’s how it worked here. One jury member was sensible, the others were rubber stamping a law that results in the wrong outcome in this case. That’s the entire purpose of juries – a check on the state (via a control on the prosecutions behavior/decision to pursue charges), the judge, and the law.

      • DEG

That’s exactly how it works. Everywhere. Juries are not required to follow the judges instructions, nor the law, either as written or as presented to them by the judge.

One juror thought the state met its burden. 11 Jurors thought the state didn’t meet its burden. We only have the fact that the foreperson claimed the one wasn’t following the judges instructions which doesn’t mean that’s what happened.

      • PutridMeat

        mean that’s what happened.

OK, agreed, I was assigning motive/thought processes to the jurors that I can’t know, as you were with So, they thought the prosecution didn’t meet its burden

The response was really addressed at the “not how it works in Massachusetts”; that’s exactly how juries work, whether in Mass. or elsewhere.

      • R C Dean

Under the MA standard, its a miracle anyone is ever convicted of anything. The prosecution has to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the defendant did not suffer from a mental disease or defect, which is undefined, or that “ the defendant nonetheless retained the substantial capacity to appreciate the wrongfulness or criminality of their conduct and to
conform their conduct to the requirements of the law”.

The second one is at least theoretically achievable, and should support a guilty verdict in this case given her obvious premeditation in getting her husband out of the way as well as her suicide attempt (although this could cut both ways).

The fundamental problem, though, is the burden of proof. Ordinarily, the defense bears the burden of burden of proving an affirmative defense to some level. In MA, though, all the defense has to do is say the magic words “insanity defense”, and sit back while the prosecution attempts the impossible (to prove a negative, that the defendant has no mental disease or defect) or engage in mindreading (the defendant knew it was wrong).

      • DEG

OK, agreed, I was assigning motive/thought processes to the jurors that I can’t know, as you were with So, they thought the prosecution didn’t meet its burden

Assigning motive? I’m commenting on their known actions.

The response was really addressed at the “not how it works in Massachusetts”; that’s exactly how juries work, whether in Mass. or elsewhere.

I’m well aware of jury nullification.

Also, Milei may be playing the card here to rile up his people when they’re angry (at him), but his ties to Trump and other current events/his ire with the UK actually make him the Argentinian leader best situated to get the job done. He’s uniquely positioned to actually accomplish the task so it’s a bit more than just posturing.

      • rhywun

I am doubtful the UK is either willing or able to defend it these days.

      • R C Dean

Certainly not able. They don’t really have a Navy any more.

Hell, they can’t even defend their own island these days.

      • DEG

I am doubtful the UK is either willing or able to defend it these days.

The Brits, after the war, increased their military presence in the islands by building RAF Mount Pleasant. It’s still in operation today housing a few thousand (like 1,000 to 2,000) British military personnel.

      • The Last American Hero

Britain is a NATO country. An attack on NATO territory could cause the US to have to intervene. No, seriously. I mean it guys. Stop laughing.

    • (((Jarflax

Fun fact, the Falklands war was closer to WWII than to today.

    • DEG

On youtube several years ago there was a British documentary on how they almost lost the Falklands War. It was a multi-part documentary that interviewed mostly British military people that were involved in the planning and in the fighting, but did interview a few of the Argentine commanders on the ground in the Falklands.

I can’t find it. I found a newer video which I wonder if it was AI generated.

Anyways, the documentary was all about how close the British came to losing that war. A few things going slightly differently would have caused the British to lose the war. It was interesting listening to the Brits interviewed saying how close it was.

      • UnCivilServant

I’m of a mind that the Falklands should be made independent and governed locally.

    • PieInTheSky

i think most brits dont give a damn about that war.

      • Brochettaward

I don’t know. The ones I interacted with online (probably been like 10-15 years now admittedly) always spoke glowingly of it when you’d point out that they were our weak little sisters at this point. America didn’t help at all during the great Falklands War.

      • rhywun

        There it is.

I was wondering if we’d get more protest music out of another Falklands war.

“Taiwan man wins lawsuit but gets jailed for using robot vacuum to record wife’s affair

Court rules that marital obligations do not override individual’s right to privacy, sentencing husband to five months in prison…

After reviewing surveillance footage from a parking garage, he identified an unknown man who had previously driven his wife home.

Three months later, he remotely activated the home’s robot vacuum cleaner via its mobile application, planning to use its built-in audio feature to communicate with his wife.

However, the live feed captured his wife in an intimate encounter with another man. Seeking evidence for a legal claim, he began recording the footage.”

    • UnCivilServant

Not well versed on Taiwanese laws, but there are more than a few jurisdictions here where that is unlawful surveilence. He could walk in on them and be legally sound, but spying with the robot falls in a different bin.

      • Brochettaward

I wonder what Taiwan’s paternity laws are like. If he was married and she ended up having a kid and his name was on the birth certificate, would they have made him fight tooth and nail after finding out about the affair to get it off? Would he have been forced to give child support for another man’s kid?

Albuquerque police say the two were drinking and eating at an apartment when an argument over how spicy the chile was turned into a physical fight.

Gutierrez had reportedly complained that his were too hot.

After that fight, police say, Gutierrez pulled out a handgun and shot Cavazos several times.”

The Venezuela deal appears to be unprecedented, Priest said. The U.S. considered taking direct control of an oil concession in Saudi Arabia during World War II but backed down due to industry opposition, he said. Congress almost created a federal oil company in 1976, but the vote narrowly failed.

“For the American government to get involved with a shady businessman concessionaire in a country that is known for endemic corruption, it just raises all sorts of red flags,” Priest said.

On top of the Pentagon equity stake, the State Department has the right to purchase 20% of NABEP’s oil output at the cost of production rather than market price. The U.S. agency also has the right to first refusal for the remaining 80% of NABEP’s production.

The U.S. government can also veto appointments to NABEP’s board of directors and a majority of the board must be U.S. citizens. The deal with NABEP is governed by U.S. law and subject to the jurisdiction of its courts.

“This is straight up a state-owned enterprise,” said Scott Lincicome, an international trade law expert at the Cato Institute. “De facto control of 100% of output at cost — that’s ownership.”

We should let the Chinese have it.

I could understand not guilty by diminished capability (or whatever the term is) and maybe even manslaughter although that seems to be a stretch. But, not guilty of something that she actually did (and there’s no doubt about that) is an odd place to run jury nullification.

Although, I guess it’s similar to the Luigi Mangione, “not guilty because the victim deserved it” defense.

*Note to the minders, I have no such intention, just applying Luigi logic to a right-wing cause.

“Corie A Walsh, 38, has been charged with three counts of first-degree murder in the killing of her son, identified as Barrett Walsh, that took place on her $1 million property in Frankfort, Illinois on Tuesday, per the Daily Mail. Neighbors have compared the killings to the Lindsay Clancy case….

Walsh was found by police in a bathtub fully dressed, surrounded by bloody water. A neighbor was holding a towel to her left inner thigh and told police that she had taken a knife from Walsh and thrown it into a sink. Walsh had also cut her wrists. Prosecutors said that Walsh had allegedly told officers that she killed her young son because he was the “devil” and the “anti-Christ.” Prosecutors said witnesses told investigators that Walsh had become interested in the Lindsay Clancy case, where Clancy admitted to killing her three children in Massachusetts and then tried to kill herself.”

      • R C Dean

See, under the MA standard, she has a good chance of getting off as well. If you genuinely believe that someone is the devil and the anti-Christ, then its not wrong to kill them, meaning you don’t understand the wrongfulness of your actions. And its nearly impossible for the prosecution to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that you do, in fact, understand that it is wrong to kill the devil and the anti-Christ.

      • DEG

True, though this is in Illinois which uses a saner standard for insanity:

        (e) When the defense of insanity has been presented during the trial, the burden of proof is on the defendant to prove by clear and convincing evidence that the defendant is not guilty by reason of insanity. However, the burden of proof remains on the State to prove beyond a reasonable doubt each of the elements of each of the offenses charged, and, in a jury trial where the insanity defense has been presented, the jury must be instructed that it may not consider whether the defendant has met his burden of proving that he is not guilty by reason of insanity until and unless it has first determined that the State has proven the defendant guilty beyond a reasonable doubt of the offense with which he is charged.

      • Common Tater

People should be judged by their actions, not their thoughts. There is no way to prove one way or the other what’s in someone’s head. Which is why I’m against “hate crime” laws.

  32. The Late P Brooks

But the U.S. government’s partnership with NABEP faces legal and political uncertainty that raises doubts about the deal’s long-term viability.

“As with the other equity deals, the Trump administration does not appear to have laid out any legal rationale or justification for how they think they can do this,” said Peter Harrell, who served as an international economics advisor on the National Security Council under President Joe Biden.

Any time you need an unbiased definitive analysis, you rush straight off to find a former Biden administration official.

“Shana Gaviola, a California mother of four, is scheduled to surrender to federal prison on August 24 to begin a three-year sentence, nearly the statutory maximum, for violating a protective order her teenage son obtained against her in 2021. As she prepares to report, her attorneys have filed a formal application asking President Trump for a full and unconditional pardon….

According to Gaviola and her son’s school records, her son was troubled and his inappropriate behavior was noted by his school. At age 13, Blake announced that he was a transgender girl and requested to be called by a female name and given sex-rejecting interventions. Gaviola refused. The identity crisis appeared to subside. But that was not true. Blake’s Fresno public school was socially transitioning him without Gaviola’s knowledge and advising him about available sex rejecting interventions. In 2020, per the pardon application and police records, Gaviola’s son was arrested on allegations that he sexually abused a seven-year-old neighbor. To safeguard Gaviola’s other younger children, she arranged for her son to stay temporarily with a family friend, Susan Reynolds. In 2021, when Gaviola told her son it was time to come home, Reynolds instead aided him in filing for a restraining order and emancipation. Gaviola has not spoken with her son since.

Gaviola’s attorneys say that she believed, based on a custody decree naming her the child’s custodial parent and what they describe as defective service of the restraining order, that she retained legal authority to direct her son’s care. Gaviola retained a transport team composed of former law enforcement to take Blake to Agape Ranch Boarding School, a Missouri Christian boarding school that was later shut down in 2023 for multiple allegations of abuse towards the students. Blake was restrained during the 27-hour drive. Blake remained at Apage for eight days before his biological father, who shared legal custody, arranged for him to be picked up. Per Gaviola, Reynolds paid Blake’s father $20,000 to return Blake to a woman Blake’s father had never met.”

But think of the orgiastic celebrations when a Democrat President orders it to be dynamited

Veterans Michael Lemmon, Shaun Byrnes, Jon Gundersen — along with architectural historian Calder Loth — filed their temporary restraining order request shortly after Interior Secretary Doug Burgum announced that project excavation would begin within the next two weeks.

Continuing their months-long legal battle with the president, the group is now claiming the Trump administration is unlawfully moving ahead with the arch without receiving necessary approval, namely that of Congress.

“Preserving Congress’s role in authorizing the design and siting of commemorative works and other structures on federal land in our national capital will ensure democratic accountability,” their lawyers wrote Friday.

“My name is Trump, king of kings:
