Sunday Morning Links

My home redo has gotten to the point where I have to start thinking seriously about the esthetics, not just functionality. Problem is, I’m a male, straight, and therefore possess no sense of design. So I’ll have to bite the bullet and get someone who knows what they’re doing give me some advice and pointers. So far, their ideas for overall look have… not appealed to me.

“That framed autographed portrait of Eddie Murray, it simply will NOT do!”
“Fuck you, he’s the greatest switch hitter in history!”
“Ooooo, really? Now I’m intrigued…”

Speaking of offensive, people born on this date who may have needed help include the spiritual father of most American politicians; a guy who, unlike our current crop of government physicians, actually did something; a guy whose name ended up being an ass-sex euphemism; a famous serial killer; a woman famous for a one-night stand; the father of bluegrass; a vicious antisemite to whom we entrusted our kids; the one and only Velvet Fog; and the prime exponent of Heroin Chic.

I am a prime exponent of Links, however.

Just let the Jews handle it.

Kathy is a real pip, she is.

This will be a TV movie.

In a free market, this would be good business practice.

They’re not wrong. But still, people know what they want so should get it good and hard.

In Little League news, Sloopy is on suicide watch.

Meh, let ’em all kill each other and maybe we can get back to actually good music.

“For safety’s sake, we need to cripple any innovative start-ups and let us big boys run things.”

Related: the moral panic gets increasingly hilarious.

Related: There’s nothing to fear except fear itself.

What do you call a guy with a perfect voice, a perfect musical sense, and the talent to write classic song after song? You call him the Birthday Boy.

“the prime exponent of Heroin Chic.”

    I was expecting Kate Moss.

Considering OMWC’s age, I was thinking Jeanne Eagels.

      Me too.

I wonder who will be ranked higher next week?

Undefeated TTUN who beat a top 20 team?

    Or 1-loss tosu?

    Heh

    • Gender Traitor

As I said last night, tOSU deserved to lose that one and Texas deserved to win.

Even so, ttun’s “Undefeated” at best deserves an asterisk. 😉

In other too-local sports news, my alma mater beat Holy Cross handily…but I don’t know whether the Crusaders are any good. 🤷

      • Trigger Hippie

They tend to lose steam and go home after eight games or so.

I’m just being a jackass. Michigan doesn’t have a QB and is going to get trounced by Ohio State again this year.

      • The Last American Hero

It will be a great credit to Underwood if he is still healthy at the end of the season, since they seem to think he is a running back that can sometimes throw the ball. Eventually all those tackles are going to take a toll.

    He’s half right.

    • rhywun

To be fair, the Dems are absolutely going to run with the notion that one rando shouting something that hardly anyone heard at a rally is actually proof positive that their enemies are uniquely white-supremacisty.

      • Nephilium

Meanwhile, calls to put MAGAts into concentration camps is just rhetorical bluster.

The progressives have reached the point that when they say they hate me and want me dead, I believe them.

For no reason other than Donald is for it.

Meanwhile in too local news… another pretend “moderate” Dem continues to be “staunchly opposed” to whatever Donald wants even when it injures other Dems’ families. Opposing Hitler is worth breaking some eggs bones, after all.

        From the sidebar:

NY high school senior suspended for bringing cup of coffee to class

Whether or not students should be allowed to bring food and/or drink to class, the issue here according to the article is that the district changed the policy without adequately informing people.

I learned to drink coffee in high school, and learned to take it black, no sugar, like a normal adult.

      • Common Tater

        Now that’s “suicidal empathy”:

      • Common Tater

““The following food and drink guidelines help minimize distractions, protect students with food allergies, and promote a calm, equitable school experience,” the school’s district’s policy on Food from Outside Vendors states. “Students arriving with drinks or food will be asked to finish them before entering school.”

Those reasons are bullshit. Also, students can’t bring their own lunch?

      • rhywun

Yeah, I saw the “women’s march” thing and thought that was perfectly on point.

      • rhywun

I want to punch the lights out of anyone who utters the word “equitable”.

No but good luck trying to convince the average Dem that Islam is not just some slight variation on the friendly religions they are used to. Their entire world view prohibits them from even understanding the reality in this matter let alone expressing it.

I did read it. It is a very good counter to how I felt after 911.

I felt there was a blowback effect from the nation building and interference by the US over the past 40 years.

I also knew little about the religion of peace. I had yet to meet any true believers.

      • Beau Knott

I read it. Impressive article, well written, and very good analyses imnsho.

Black-clad – let’s be honest: uniformed – men who want to “reclaim our borders, restore order and send a clear message: Britain belongs to the British”, while claiming to be protecting women and girls: the whole spectacle was pitched halfway between Oswald Moseley’s blackshirts – and, therefore, Hitler and the Nazis – and the Ku Klux Klan, with the seemingly ubiquitous balaclavas lacing everything with a flavour of the Troubles. But if you receive most of your information in the form of a distracting and seemingly infinite jumble of random moving images, what would you know about most of that?”

Yes, because people who can’t agree on the definition of words are the ones promoting literacy and logic.

    • EvilSheldon

While fascists protest in UK ports and purvey nonsense and poison online, ever fewer people have the perspective or analytical tools to challenge them

Or maybe the ‘fascists’ have a worthwhile point, and the midwit left doesn’t ‘have the perspective or analytical tools to challenge them’ because they’ve gotten very comfortable confusing agreement with popular opinion trends for perspective and analysis.

The attacks are part of a broader effort by the GOP to turn prominent Muslim figures on the left into national symbols of the Democratic Party, tying them to issues including immigration, crime and what Republicans, like Sen. Ted Cruz (Texas), describe as the spread of sharia law. As Cruz used his convention speech to amplify concerns about sharia law in America, calling out Mamdani, El-Sayed and other Democrats, a shout of “he should be shot” could be heard from the crowd.

No, no, no. He said, “Do a shot!” It’s a drinking game.

Every time a Republican mentions sharia law you’re supposed to drink.

    • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

You would think that the Dems would be proud of this, and not try to hide it, seeing they are all in on The Brave New World.

Maybe the Rs are onto something…

  18. The Late P Brooks

“It is deeply alarming and unacceptable that Senator Ted Cruz carried on with his speech amid loud, explicit calls to assassinate prominent politicians, including two American Muslims,” the Council on American-Islamic Relations, the largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization in the country, said in a statement.

“Failing to denounce such dangerous rhetoric normalizes political violence and endangers public servants and community members alike,” the group added.

Amid the media frenzy, many tech outsiders were left wondering exactly how AI could destroy humanity. The answer is not fully known, though researchers like Coxon say AI’s pace of development offers hints.

Coxon is among a camp of what critics dubbed AI “doomers” who believe the technology will lead to mass extinction if development is not safety-aligned or slowed down.

“These will soon be superhuman systems that can hack anything, revolutionize any field overnight, and acquire real power and resources,” Coxon wrote. “We have all witnessed the progress in each of these domains, and progress is not slowing.”

These people need to get out more.

Humanity is extremely tough and resilient, sometimes depressingly so.

How could we tell? The entire press is already barely indistinguishable from a mob of bots controlled by a single malevolent AI.

I watched the Netflix documentary on the plot to assasinate Trump as he left Turkey. He switched planes secretly in a catering truck after publicly boarding the new Air Force 1.

The entire doc was about how the administration is historically dishonest because they didnt tell the press about their plans to thwart an assassination attempt beforehand.

      Really.

      It was astonishing.

They mentioned other times when the secret service had used decoys in the same way… but then the entire doc was about how the press had been disrespected and this is unprecedented.

      Wild.

An assassination attempt that was stopped…. and that isnt the story at all. It is the press being butt hurt because they were not consulted in advance. As if that was the proper way to handle security.

“A Charlotte, North Carolina, man accused of shooting a police officer is facing dozens of additional charges, raising fresh questions about how repeat offenders continue to remain on the streets.

Dionte Antonio McCracking, 28, was arrested Wednesday after an hours-long standoff with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s SWAT team. He is accused of shooting a CMPD officer in the shoulder during a struggle on Enderly Road….

CMPD later announced that Dionte and his brother, 27-year-old Jatarius McCracking, face a combined 190 charges spanning a crime spree that police tied together beginning July 27.

Dionte accounts for 62 of those charges. Jatarius faces 128. Police described both men as habitual felons and career criminals with more than a decade of history.”

“Once you’re at that point, basically the AI just has all of the hard power,” Larsen said. “It can sort of do away with the humans as it wants to, taking over with the military or using a bioweapon.”

Larsen also worries about AI’s persuasion abilities and the possibility it could get “really good at politics” and start catastrophic events like a genocide.
