Sunday Morning Gonna Kill Someone Links

We attract some remarkable assholes at our little café/bistro. Today’s winner: guy comes to the counter and asks our girl, “Can I get change for a ten?”
“Sure, a five and five ones OK?”
“Perfect.”
So as she’s handing it to him, she asks, “Are you dining in or take-out?”
He responds, “Neither, I’m having dinner at the place across the street. Thanks!” and walks out.

Birthdays could be less enraging and there’s a shitload of them being celebrated today, including that of a nepo baby; a guy who rode the backs of cowboys; the most influential guy on American youth who you never heard of; a guy whose fame was deadpan; Jim Bouton’s best buddy and inspiration; a guy who would not have gotten along with Diane Fosse or Jane Goodall; an absolute maestro of lunacy; a guy who fucking owned the corner of the endzone; the pioneer in a genre of fiction I despise; a race hustler from before we even had the term; a squish who was the wrong guy at the wrong time for the wrong president; one more brainless actress who never let her vacuity stop her activism; and someone who has not done her job given that there’s still a job to be done.

My job is Links.

Oh, and H/T to Fourscore. He knows why.

Is there a word for “whistling past the graveyard that you dug?”

Here’s a look at some of those graves.

This article conveniently forgets to mention that repeated studies show that it’s been absolutely ineffective in improving educational outcomes.

“I think that this situation absolutely requires a really stupid and futile gesture”

I think we’ve seen this show before.

They don’t????

Proof that “thinkers” on the Right can be absolutely as retarded as the “thinkers” on the Left.

I note that Spud did his house in Midcentury Modern.

This confirms everything I believe about pop music.

Micks vs. Hebes.

Tony Rice’s version of this song is iconic. But… Norman Blake’s might be a bit more soulful. Listen and decide.

I note that Spud did his house in Midcentury Modern.

It’s gone to cringey because it’s Boomerporn?

    • rhywun

All I got from that is that the WSJ can cough up tedious thumbsuckers with the best of them.

    • rhywun

Officials quickly notified local faith leaders, members of the Jewish and Black communities and the Abington Human Relations Commission about the incident, Hummel said.

OFFS. I hope there are enough fainting couches to go around.

This article conveniently forgets to mention that repeated studies show that it’s been absolutely ineffective in improving educational outcomes.

I was expecting something on “class size”. The unions keep yammering about that for some reason.

“advocates say the move will reduce support for parents, create bigger class sizes, herp derp”

    Oh there it is.

    • Fourscore

Somehow, in the Olden Days, class sizes of 30 or so was the norm, with no assistants.

Miss Koltoff took no BS from Robert Foress or Elroy Selg. They sat down when she said “Sit Down” in a firm Drill Sergent voice

’cause the next command included a trip to the “office”, a call to the parents with the instructions to pick up their kid.

    • juris imprudent

Bigger class size, fewer teachers – might be the only math the union members understand.

  5. RAHeinlein

    Sorry – I don’t find this retarded.

“The better answer is not a return to Victorian hypocrisy, nor a regime of pervasive surveillance and enforcement. It is the recovery of an older and saner ideal: freedom disciplined by responsibility.”

    • Suthenboy

Is there any word in our culture more abused than ‘free’?

      • Fourscore

        Freedom or democracy, your choice.

    • R C Dean

      Here is the deal:

A lot of that Victorian hypocrisy goes away if you recognize the difference between a private realm (where its nobody’s business) and a public realm (where decorum is required). Childish minds see that as hypocrisy. Ore developed minds see it as a healthy balance.

      • (((Jarflax

Probably depends on the ore. Lead for example takes you right back to childish.

    • juris imprudent

All actions have consequences, and that is what the cultural rot tries to deny. Since it is a fundamental reality, all attempts to deny it demand even greater attempts to ignore those consequences when they appear. You are a bad person for accepting reality as it is.

      • (((Jarflax

Don’t leave out predictability. Actions not only have consequences, it is possible to predict which actions will have which consequences with a reasonable degree of accuracy, and to formulate guidelines for behavior from this information. You can even take this a step further and allow your understanding of this to guide your empathy and charity by giving preference to those who find themselves in a bad way due to happenstance over those who ignored all the guidelines and ended up in predictable misery.

      • mindyourbusiness

Maybe it’s time to erect a Statue of Responsibility somewhere on the West Coast, as Eric Hoffer (and others) suggested. San Francisco seems urgently in need of one.

      • Suthenboy

“Actions not only have consequences, it is possible to predict which actions will have which consequences with a reasonable degree of accuracy, and to formulate guidelines for behavior from this information.”

Have you payed close attention to Hillary Clinton? She has zero ability to predict how people will react to her actions and words. She just throws shit out there and then watches very carefully to see how people react because she has no idea beforehand. She is a pure sociopath. Even among pols she stands out in that respect and that takes some doin’.

A lot of people curse and criticize Trump all all day long but he saved us a bullet.

      • (((Jarflax

I think you may have misunderstood my point. I’m talking about the basis of society, not agents of its destruction.

    • Fourscore

I visited your area once at this time of year. I had never seen the fall colors that stretched for miles and miles. It truly was spectacular.

We stopped at a little store, place was warm. I asked the shop keeper what kind of wood he was using. When he told me,

“culled apple trees” I was aghast ’cause I was buying little bags of apple wood to use in my smoker.

    • RAHeinlein

Lovely! We are planning a fall foliage tour starting ~mid-October – hoping to hit peak in Door Country, WI and then a trip through Allegheny Natl Forest and South to the Smokies.

  6. PieInTheSky

Proof that “thinkers” on the Right can be absolutely as retarded as the “thinkers” on the Left.

Disagree. This is not quite up to peak retard on the left

    • Suthenboy

‘peak retard’ and ‘peak stupid’ are mythical beasts

      • Gender Traitor

When I have to create forms at my job, I try to make them idiot-proof, but they keep making better idiots.

    • R C Dean

      Speaking of tedious thumbsuckers . . . .

    • (((Jarflax

I guess I am peak retard, I didn’t see anything I objected to in my skim of that piece.

      • Old Man With Candy

        Right from the intro:

For much of Cornell’s history, students understood that adulthood required freedom joined to self-command. They fell in love, formed relationships, made foolish choices, and sometimes broke hearts. But there remained a broadly accepted moral grammar: sex belonged, ideally, within an affectionate and durable union between a man and a woman; intimacy carried obligations; and one’s conduct toward another person was not merely a private lifestyle choice but a test of character.

Having lived through the Sixties and Seventies as someone sexually “active,” I can assure that the claimed “moral grammar” was decidedly not “broadly accepted.”

      • (((Jarflax

Cornell predates the 1960s. The rebellion of the 60s against the impact of hormonal birth control on the mores of prior eras doesn’t invalidate claims about the advantages of those mores.

  7. rhywun

“I think that this situation absolutely requires a really stupid and futile gesture”

I still think the whole shit show is an October surprise.

  8. PieInTheSky

I note that Spud did his house in Midcentury Modern.

No point in labels as long as there is a well stocked bar in a house

    • Chipping Pioneer

Midcentury Modern requires a bar cart with glass shelves.

      • R.J.

I like midcentury modern. It’s happy furniture. That must be why that author has to tear it down.

  9. rhywun

And emerging democratic socialists haven’t made for strong lines of attack nationwide.

    OK, Jan.

Perhaps the problem is that the Party has flooded the field with so many repellant communist assholes that it becomes harder to focus on just one.

    • juris imprudent

Let us do notice that they only win in very particular precincts. When one of them wins say in Florida or Oklahoma, that would be noteworthy.

  10. PieInTheSky

China has perfected the art of the ‘Smurf Minority’. More Smurf ethnicities in traditional Smurf costumes living in Smurf villages and doing silly Smurf dances than any other country on the planet. The ‘Smurfification’ of peripheral groups, redefined to their Smurf-like features

    https://x.com/kunley_drukpa/status/2106292220739322284

    • (((Jarflax

It wears the costume and does the dance or else it gets the gulag again.

    • R C Dean

If there is a blue tsunami, then the country really is a goner. And not because Team Red last a midterm. Because Team Blue blew them out with freaks and commies and no (domestic) fundraising support. That doesn’t happen without a big fraction of the country living in a counter-reality bubble and hellbent on forcing their retardation on everybody.

And there’s no fixing that without a crisis that creates a total cultural and social reset.

      • juris imprudent

You mean like the failure to persuade slaveowners to give up on slavery?

  11. rhywun

WTF is this? The Weekly World News?

“Today I bring the revelation of who the self-described “Catholic trad wife” Candace Amber Owens truly is: a fraudulent lesbian in a false marriage with a Hebrew-speaking Zionist husband who’s allegedly gay.

Candace met her husband, George Farmer, whom she cheated on in 2022, at an event hosted by a Scientologist in Jeffrey Epstein’s black book and named in the Epstein files. In Russia, Candace attended events run by Jeffrey Epstein’s Russian spook fixer.”

        ….ummmm…yeah…

      • R.J.

“Candace Owens, one of the biggest political influencers…”

        Says who?

      • Common Tater

He does go on to discuss her numbers.

Someone I know sent me a link to a post on KiwiFarms which is that whole substack article.

I started skimming the article because it is so damn long.

One of the responses on KiwiFarms was from someone smarter than me:

        Sorry, I don’t read women’s gossip magazines

      • rhywun

“a fraudulent lesbian in a false marriage with a Hebrew-speaking Zionist husband who’s allegedly gay”

        taps out of the crazy

      • Common Tater

Don’t know if it’s crazy or not. What I don’t think is crazy is that someone saying that Brigitte Macron is a man, and the Mossad killed Charlie Kirk, might not be honest about herself.

Lesbian Until Graduation is a thing.

21% of voters hate both parties and are mistrustful of government, and crickets from the National LP.

“Californian NAACP leaders are blasting a Santa Barbara high school after several teen girls were spotted wearing blackface in a TikTok video, accusing the district of mishandling its response to the racist post.

School officials enforced unspecified consequences on the four teen girls, who attended San Marcos High School, but NAACP Santa Barbara President Connie Alexander said Friday the district’s response fell short….

The girls have not been identified. In the picture, they appear to mimic an AI-generated image of four young black boys in various poses, a trend that has since spread across TikTok….

According to the Santa Barbara Independent, a San Marcos High School substitute teacher read the N-word out loud during a reading of “Of Mice and Men” last year after being told not to. The substitute was then removed from campus.”

There’s another book to buy in hard copy before it gets censored or banned. I’ll shelve it next to Huckleberry Finn. 🙄️

      • Common Tater

You might have books where “Black” isn’t capitalized!

    • Ted S.

If the kids didn’t film the TikTok video on school property, the district, and even more so the NAACP race hustlers, can fuck right off.

    • rhywun

The girls have not been identified.

That is a surprise. How are we going to ruin their lives if we don’t know who they are?

    • UnCivilServant

Euthenize the NAACP paracists, then take the girls’ phones away as part of a treatment for brainrot.

      • UnCivilServant

‘paracists’? Where did that come from I suppose it might be “racist parasites” 🤷‍♂️

    • Suthenboy

Blackface…I dont get it. Is it supposed to be funny? What are they saying exactly.
It is like the limeys finding men in drag hilarious. I just dont get it. Maybe I am slow like that.

  14. Q Continuum

“A culture that treats sex as recreation, intoxication as enhancement, and restraint as repression should not be surprised when its participants find themselves bewildered about consent, memory, responsibility, betrayal, and harm.”

No. The problem here is a culture that has decoupled freedom from responsibility and accountability. People have been fucking each other silly in creative configurations since the dawn of time; however, only now do we have a vast state and cultural apparatus designed to shield favored parties from the possible guilt, regret and embarrassment associated with sexual free-for-all. Mistakes can’t just be mistakes that we learn from and move on, they have to include victimization and absurd Manichean oppressor/oppressed narrative.

Something tells me Ireland’s soccer team is mostly… Not Irish.

    • Chipping Pioneer

Of course they’re Irish. They’re just from Southern Ireland.

  16. The Late P Brooks

But “we must do better”, Kotlikoff said. “We don’t have all the answers, but we are committed to investigating and finding the answers our community deserves.”

No more behind-the-curtain stuff. Show trials, with public hangings at the predetermined conclusion.

  17. The Late P Brooks

The case has reignited scrutiny of how law enforcement and universities handle sexual assault complaints, with students questioning whether processes are enough to protect them. It has also drawn the attention of New York state officials, who have appointed a special prosecutor to investigate.

The obvious solution is to ban coeducational schools.

  18. Common Tater

““If you have very ambitious career goals in this field, there will be seasons when you work beyond normal hours,” she said, noting that a culture of working 12-hour days to keep up was not uncommon. “I don’t think there is always a neat shortcut around that than to put in the hours.”

Those kinds of work expectations can make it impossible for everyone to stay in the field. “I went on maternity leave for four months, and by the time I came back, there were completely different frameworks and levels of models,” Putatunda said. Getting caught back up was overwhelming. She said it was only possible with the help of supportive co-workers and a husband who equitably split childcare.

“That is one way women get pushed out of AI,” she said. “They don’t lack the interest or ability to keep up. They may lack the infrastructure that makes keeping up possible.””

    https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2026/oct/04/women-ai-jobs-inequality

    infrastructure?

    • UnCivilServant

Why do these people keep trying to push women into jobs and roles those women don’t like? The reason so many women abandon tech is because they quickly find out they don’t enjoy the work.

      • juris imprudent

Then the work must change to be more accommodating to women! What’s so difficult about that?

    • Gender Traitor

“I don’t want to have to make choices! I want to be able to take several months off to have a baby, have my employer accommodate a different schedule afterward to meet my new needs, and still zoom up the career ladder!” (🙄️)

    • rhywun

      Trade-offs, how do they work?

  19. The Late P Brooks

Part of the challenge for Republicans comes from Democrats’ lack of a clear leader. Pelosi stepped down from Democratic leadership at the start of 2023, and her successor, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) does not elicit the same animus from Republicans. In the 2022 cycle, her last term as Democratic leader, Pelosi was invoked in more than 80 GOP ads, POLITICO’s analysis found. Now, she’s mentioned just a handful of times, while Jeffries hasn’t been mentioned in any battleground TV ads this year, according to the POLITICO review of transcripts.

As we all know, politics can never be FOR anything, it can only be a life or death struggle against some terrible opponent.

    • rhywun

it can only be a life or death struggle against some terrible opponent

      Tell me about it.
