Saturday Morning Black Hole Links

As is our wont in the morning while 10b0t and I are preparing food for the day, we get to talking. We have to be rather circumspect, so it generally revolves around culture. I can’t remember exactly how we got there (maybe it started with a conversation about the greatness of Adam West) but the subject of Robinson Crusoe came up. And… not one of our staff had any idea of who or what that was. When I gave them a synopsis of the story and explained that Friday was to Crusoe what Tonto was to the Lone Ranger, I got even more blank looks.

Birthdays today include the guy responsible for the Hindenburg disaster;  a guy who was finished when the fat lady sang; the guy who inspired Olive Oyl; arguably the most interesting and influential composer in jazz history and, along with the Old Guy Music star, one of the Three Ms of Jazz; a talented musician and comedian who was just a bit… off; the greatest auteur in Hollywood history; a very sweet guy; a truly great and sadly departed singer/songwriter; someone who shockingly hasn’t been canceled; a guy who did a killer Holofernes imitation; a prime woodchipper candidate; a specialist in dick pics; and some dude who got famous for driving around in circles.

Links make me feel like I’m going in circles.

Yeah, well, he’s DOA.

Yeah, vous etes fucked.

“And how, exactly, do I dip my miniature beak here?”

Idea: look at a map.

I’m sure it’s just as accurate as polygraphy. But fear not, the UN is on the case!

Saudi Arabia in particular objects. “We don’t want the competition.”

Spud and I have an alibi. (Comment: they may be expensive and collectable, but they’re… boring)

“Fewer than Bernie owns mansions.”

I could use it as well, but I’d spend it better. Coke and hookers.

AIDS or monkeypox?

One of the last songs from a birthday boy. So appropriate.

    Happy birthday Herbert Morrison!

    a very sweet guy

Obviously one of the Fanjuls, but I don’t know which one.

I like the way NBC just takes his word for what was going on. When his absence in no way looked like it was just a case of the flu.

I am disappointed he’s back though. I find it simply astounding that he is favored to win the race.

The polls and the betting sites.

So, the people who answer the phone and want to be loud – got it.

      • Ted S.

That’s not what the betting sites are.

The people who compulsively gamble get their info from where?

        UCS:

Every bit and note of public and private information they can get their hands on. Insider trading on prediction markets is also not unknown.

His reappearance is sus as well. Footage of him at a music festival. No interview, nothing else as far as I know. Who rejoins a campaign after a two week absence by wandering around in public?

      • UnCivilServant

It’s not an appearance until it’s recorded by a non-friendly party who confirms the time and date. Even if all he says is “no comment” it at least confirms he’s not locked in a loony bin with the $1 coins.

Hegseth gleefully confirmed the livestream plan after previously saying that the execution would be public.

    “Gleefully”.

Executions should be public. And not barely technically public with a half dozen handpicked “witnesses”. Pay-per-view public, with the proceeds going to the families of the executee’s victims.

    • DrOtto

It should be a beheading, that’s my only gripe.

  5. R C Dean

I could use it as well, but I’d spend it better. Coke and hookers.

What makes you think that isn’t how the DNC is going to spend it?

Did you change the Old Guy Music? I was expecting Mingus or Miles, or am I reading that bit wrong.

    • Old Man With Candy

      Neither has a birthday today, I think…?

That sad article told me absolutely nothing about what those two might have in store for poor Michigan.

Some times you win when you lose. In this case we all lose.

      Been a nice ride though.

      • R C Dean

While I tend to agree that its the best shot for avoiding the hell of the DSA controlling the whole government after 2028, I still have doubts that it will play out the way he thinks.

Whatever happens in the next two years, Trump will get the blame for it and the blast radius will likely include the Repub Presidential candidate and the useless Congressional Repubs. The Dems have doubled down on wokism and worse this cycle and it doesn’t seem to be hurting them, so I’m not sure how doing it as a Congressional majority will have a different outcome.

      • UnCivilServant

Where are you getting the “doesn’t seem to be hurting them”?

    • Stinky Wizzleteats

Voting for the guys who never do what you want them to do because you’re more scared of the other guy is a sure way to never get what you want but I’m also coming around to the assessment that they wouldn’t let us vote if it actually made a difference. Not sure what a good fix is but showing up for the twats who stabbed you in the back ain’t it.

The difference between chess and politics is that chess has rules.

Or, perhaps, that black and white play by the same rules.

The progressives, should they get into power, *will* pass an immigrant amnesty, and *will* pack the SC. It doesn’t matter that ‘it’s not on the table’ politically – the left understands that they can just do things. The right can’t, because the rules are different for them.

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

The supposed right wants many of the same things as the left, they just can’t be up front about it. When they really do want to ram through unpopular and/or stupid things they usually seem to manage.

Our CFO just hired a 19-year-old kid into our Finance Operations department. Yesterday the CFO told me the kid wasn’t familiar with the term “loony bin.” 🤦‍♀️️ (He’ll soon find out.)

“A Bronx woman claims she was fired from Costco after sounding the alarm that her female boss was allegedly sexually harassing her.

The anonymous accuser alleges she was fired from the East Harlem Costco on East 117th in January 2025 after working there for two years because she reported the “hostile environment” created by her direct supervisor, Andrea Mills, according to the complaint filed Oct. 1 in Manhattan Supreme Court….

When another supervisor allegedly asked for clarification on what the issue was, Mills shouted at the woman: “You’re a very busty woman!”

    Enough with anonymous accuser.

The firebrand South Carolina Republican joined the divisive debate about the Cornell 7 case some 18 months after she came forward with her own explosive allegations that she’d been drugged and raped by her ex and three of his associates.”

“Shoppers have been left horrified after spotting ‘Nazi symbolism’ on the packaging of a Barbie doll.

Mom Ana Elizabeth recently took to TikTok from the aisles of her local store to draw attention to the unusual detail she had spotted on the kids’ toy made by Mattel….

The picture, which was in blue hue, appeared to show a sea of people with many raising a single arm at an upward angle with a straight hand – with similar echoes to the Nazi salute.”

Well I for one was horrified at the ambiguously horrifying thing.

They are like chickens. No stored memory.

Sometimes I think it might be helpful.

    • Nephilium

More death of culture transmission than lack of storage. Up until the most recent generations, people would generally watch movies and shows together. This meant that the younger generation learned the cultural markings of the previous generations. Both old and new shows. Shows from my parents childhood were played frequently when I was a kid (albeit in low ratings slots), and old movies were common fodder for late night/midday weekend local airings. Now, things drop get watched and discussed for a couple of weeks, and then fade into the background. When’s the last time you’ve heard someone mention Orange is the New Black or House of Cards? Both were considered high quality prestige dramas when they were airing, ranking up there with Breaking Bad, The Wire, Mad Men, and the Sopranos.

  13. The Late P Brooks

    ps- Friday was no Tonto.
