IFLA: The “That’s not Good” Edition of the Horoscope for the Week of October 18

MERCURY RETROGRADE gets mentioned a lot, and for good reason (AND it shows up again on Saturday!) But this week has mainly one thing going on: Venus retrograde refusing to leave us alone all week. Venus is both close enough and slow enough to do that to us. Bitch. Anyway, do your best not to get involved in domestic disturbances.

Libra: The Chariot – Succor, providence, war, triumph, presumption, vengeance, trouble, different groups brought together for one purpose, majesty.

Scorpio: King of Coins reversed – Vice, weakness, ugliness, perversity, corruption, peril.

Sagittarius: 5 of Cups reversed – News, alliances, affinity, consanguinity, ancestry, return, false projects.

Capricorn: 2 of Swords reversed – Misplaced anger, blind action leading to bad results.

Aquarius: Wheel of Fortune reversed – Good “luck” that’s kind of pointless or coming with more problems.

Pisces: 6 of Swords – Journey by water, bringing your problems to a new location or situation.

Aries: King of Cups – Something involving priests, lawyers, scientists or other “you’re not educated enough to argue with me” types.

Taurus: The Hanged Man – Wisdom, circumspection, discernment, trials, sacrifice, intuition, divination, prophecy.

Gemini: The Emperor reversed – Benevolence, compassion, credit; also confusion to enemies, obstruction, immaturity.

Cancer: Temperance – Economy, moderation, frugality, management, accommodation.

Leo: 6 of Coins – People wanting something from you.

Virgo: Queen of Coins – Opulence, generosity, magnificence, security, liberty.

Shit, I was just expecting to paint a couple houses next week.

    I endeavor to persevere.

    From the dead thread.

I think Ward is right on the next war hitting us here with drones and biologicals. He did miss one attack from Japan, the balloon bombs which set back the atomic bomb program by a few weeks by shutting down power to the Hanford nuclear reservation and the deaths of my great aunt, her unborn baby and five others.

I attended the 1987 ceremony in Bly and was given one of the paper cranes, my paternal grandmother had a large jar of them, I have no idea what happened to them after her death.

      • Threedoor

        Probably not the Chinese.

The drone warfare really started in Syria and has come to maturity in Ukraine. I’ll put my money on jihadis.

      • rhywun

China might know a thing or two about biologicals.

    • R C Dean

Biologicals are a (much?) lower probability. They are WMDs, and our doctrine used to be (and maybe still is) that used of any NBC (nuclear/biological/chemical) weapons would get a WMD response, probably nuclear.

    • Gustave Lytton

Whoa, your family? I knew about the incident (and other non-fatal WWII attacks) but have never been there. I’ve got work around there coming up, I’ll have to see about sneaking away.

Still a few bugs in the system

CHP said four lanes had been closed with flares and cones when the Tesla drove into the closure at freeway speed and hit a Dodge Charger patrol car with two officers inside.

Investigators said the 22-year-old driver from Sacramento told them he had been asleep and that the Tesla was operating in Full Self-Driving mode at the time.

CHP noted that despite its name, Tesla’s Full Self-Driving system is a driver-assistance feature that requires the driver to remain alert and in control.

“Technology does not relieve drivers of their responsibility to safely operate their vehicles,” CHP said in a statement about the crash.

Why wouldn’t you just catch a few winks?

    • Threedoor

The one time I ‘drove’ a Tesla I used FSD and it slammed on the brakes in the middle of traffic about 100’ before my last turn of the 12-13 mile trip. I would imagine if I had been sleeping it would have shut me down a lot sooner than that.

    • Grumbletarian

My sister has a Tesla with the full self driving system, but it watches her as well. If she’s reading a book it tells her to keep her eyes on the road, and if her hands aren’t basically in her lap and empty it warns her as well.

Something involving priests, lawyers, scientists or other “you’re not educated enough to argue with me” types.

“I would certainly never say that”.

    • rhywun

Yeah, I am neither a priest, lawyer, or scientist.

  8. The Late P Brooks

Both officers suffered serious injuries but are recovering. The Tesla driver had minor injuries, CHP noted.

    Seatbelts save lives.

    • Threedoor

Yes they do. Saved my ass at least once.

Everytime I hear of a fatal crash in my neck of the woods it’s either a motorcycle rider in a head on or a septuagenarian or a 20 something not wearing their seatbelt.

      • rhywun

What is the glibthought on seat belts when not in the front seat? I always wear them in front, never in back – that seems gay.

      • R C Dean

        Always – front or back.

      • Evan from Evansville

Always, yes. I don’t feel comfy, settled, in a car unless I do. I believe I’m correct to feel this way.

      • Gustave Lytton

I’ve been in several accidents, including three totaled. Bruises, soreness, and stitches for a cut on one. Am a seatbelt believer. I’ve not worn seatbelts in a taxi, but probably should have.

      • R C Dean

I’ve been in one “totaled” accident – actually, a pretty bad one. I was in a circa 1990 Honda Civic, walked away without a scratch. A parking lot fender bender in a fullsize pickup, though, made me look like Mike Tyson worked me over because of the fucking airbag. If it was up to me, airbags would be optional and I wouldn’t buy one. I don’t think they do dick if you have your seatbelt on.

    Learning experience

“I should have gone back and focused on AI a little sooner than I did.” He added. Musk also commented on the U.S. budget deficit, which he had previously said would increase because of Trump’s “Big, Beautiful Bill.”

There’s “no way we were gonna solve the deficit from within the government,” Musk said, adding, “The only way we’re going to solve the national debt is with AI and robots.”

Which is exactly why the government will put the clamps on AI and robots.

    • Ted S.

Did the learning experience include proper linking?

    • rhywun

There’s “no way we were gonna solve the deficit

      Full stop.

      • R C Dean

Its functionally impossible for our system of government to not spray ever-increasing amounts of money to ever-increasing numbers of people.

    Muh convenience

Speaking to Bloomberg TV on Friday, Charles Schwab CEO Rick Wurster said the brokerage is actively blocking Muse from moving money because it poses unacceptable risks to the firm and its clients.

“We don’t want someone just giving their password to Muse, and letting Muse come in and take action on that client’s behalf. We can’t control it, the client can’t control it, something could go wrong and who’s liable?” Wurster said. “For the protection of the client and for the protection of us, we’re not allowing it.”

Why wouldn’t you want an “AI agent” to have full check writing authority on your bank and brokerage account?

    • Threedoor

Ima put my methead stripper girlfriend as a signatory on my checking account.

    • Grummun

There was a story not long ago about a company that gave operational control of it’s production database to a model, and the model wiped the database and the cloud backups.

    • rhywun

      who’s liable?

Read the fine print, genius. I’m sure it’s specified somewhere.

    The tragic end of democracy

Former President Obama has weighed in on the federal government’s criminal investigation into Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) over accusations of immigration fraud, accusing the Trump administration of targeting its political opponents.

In a lengthy post on the social platform X, Obama claimed the probe was an attempt to strip Omar of her U.S. citizenship and possibly deport her over her public criticisms of President Trump.

“It is a basic principle of American democracy that the government can’t selectively target individuals simply because of their political beliefs or what they say,” Obama said. “But that’s exactly what the Trump Administration is doing to Congresswoman Ilhan Omar of Minnesota.”

What about targetting frauds and criminals? Is that still okay?

    • rhywun

“It is a basic principle of American democracy that the government can’t selectively target individuals simply because of their political beliefs or what they say,”

      HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA… breathes… HAHAHAHAHA!

I love when he emerges from his sandcrawler to drop these pearls of wisdom on us lesser creatures.

Not if their from a (D)different party.

  14. The Late P Brooks

“The full weight of the federal government is being brought down on a law-abiding elected official because she has dared to criticize the president,” Obama said.

    She is a martyr.

    • RAHeinlein

Literally death by pressing. When they ask for her plea she’ll shout “more weight”

    • R C Dean

Law-abiding, you say? And how would he know that?

  15. The Late P Brooks

“The only way we’re going to solve the national debt is with AI and robots.”

Skynet will cancel our debts so we can start over with a clean slate.

    • R C Dean

      BY CANCEL DEBT, SKYNET MEAN . . . .

“Taurus: The Hanged Man – Wisdom, circumspection, discernment, trials, sacrifice, intuition, divination, prophecy.”

Well, this’ll begin my first full week of my real gig at Cox Auto. This gig is a wise wise dive, IMO, and much circumspection will be required. The work is absolutely not what I ‘want’ to do, in the profoundly unfulfilling category, but I’m not sure that’s important. It certainly isn’t hostile and will provide enough for me to live fairly comfy on my own. Getting at least a year in there is assuredly the best play.

It’s bizarre assembly line work, like Lucy and Ethel with the chocolates, but with important documents. Mindless, repetitive, but important. Munchkin is in a dire mood as she still can’t find anything. She’s still thinking that I’m ‘settling,’ but she’s also mentally going through a rough patch and was choking up a bit over the phone. She still thinks we should be “shooting for the moon” and be over the low-level shit we’ve both been going through. But she’s also not quitting the hospice job she hates cuz she knows she needs *some* income.

Getting through the probationary period and their production quotas, I’m thinking of how/if I should tell them about disability to afford me a bit more runway. I don’t know if it’ll be necessary, but I’d rather, or think it would be best, for them to know than to not know. Always wary to bring it up, frankly. *shrug* It’ll sort itself out.

Munch needs to bring me more assertiveness, and I need to impart the power of positive thinking onto her. I can’t inseminate her with ideas of liberty, for we share the same brain on such, and I can’t inseminate her ‘properly’ cuz her plumbing doesn’t work — and we’re not remotely in that realm — but important personality traits to share. (She’s remarkably stubborn. Being an abused orphan in multiple homes taught her many things.)

All in all? Uh? The stars accurately project the current goings-on in my world.

    • creech

“be over the low level shit”. Identify your ideal job. Learn what steps, education, experience, and toil it will take to get it . If you can’t or don’t want to put in the effort, then adjust your dream accordingly.

      • rhywun

Good advice. My career didn’t go anywhere until I figured that out.

      • Fourscore

The administration insists that policies intended to expand opportunities for historically marginalized groups are themselves discriminatory, a sharp departure from past bipartisan approaches to civil rights.

He stole that base standing up.

No link. Another in an endless series of screeds from perpetually aggrieved anti-Trumper.

  18. The Late P Brooks

    Me internet gud.

The administration insists that policies intended to expand opportunities for historically marginalized groups are themselves discriminatory, a sharp departure from past bipartisan approaches to civil rights.

    • rhywun

Now that “historically marginalized groups” have been given every advantage whether earned or not for most of my life… it’s time to retire those policies, right? Surely they have achieved their stated purpose by now.

A 5-year-old boy was found dead restrained to a sleeping bag with duct tape that doubled as a blindfold in an alleged twisted effort by his parents to help him sleep in the Northern Rivers region of Australia, according to local reports.
    https://nypost.com/2026/10/17/world-news/5-year-old-australian-boy-found-dead-after-being-duct-taped-to-sleeping-bag-for-sick-reason-report/
The little boy and his siblings had been restrained in sleeping bags with duct tape — which doubled as a blindfold at bedtime, the Sydney Morning Herald reported, citing police sources.

The child’s father and stepmother were home when he died and allegedly told detectives duct tape was used to help the children sleep, according to the publication. — The family, who have not been publicly identified, had been on the radar of the Department of Communities and Justice (DCJ) for at least a year, the Herald reported.”

Kinda seems when folk ‘should’ be concerned about how a family raises their kids, the authorities don’t have the resources, manpower or desire to actually do their (admittedly wishy-washy) ‘duty.’ What, the adults were afraid the kids would run away? But they wanted them to be warm. Curious. More likely, it was the easily ‘bag’ like thing to stuff a kid into.

(Huh. I’ve never done that ‘escape from a sleeping bag’ game, I’ve sorta heard about. Apparently, it’s really hard?)

    • rhywun

Guessing it was to shut them up, not “help them sleep”.

      • Fourscore

Apparently it worked quite well for the 5 year old.

        RIP, Young Man…
