Poor Netflix…
/sarc
Without Netflix, there would have been neither Blue Eye Samurai nor Arcane. And the world would be less awesome for it.
Blue Eye Samurai and Arcane were great, and you didn’t mention Danjon Meshi, which is very disappointing.
But I don’t think that anyone can deny that Netflix getting into independent production hasn’t been great for the media ecosystem as a whole.
I haven’t watched that, but it’s not just the animated series. Sturgeon’s law applies to Netflix too, but I remember very much enjoying Suburra, and quite a few other shows that were just as good as BSG, by which I mean they started off great and completely fell to shit. The most recent being Monsters of Krakow.
But again, that’s completely non-unique as far as media production goes.
They never had a future as a distributor of other people’s IP, once the studios decided they wanted that revenue stream for themselves.
NA:
I was just thinking about this the other day. What’s the last Netflix original to stick in the culture for more than a month? House of Cards? Orange is the New Black? Everything since has been disposable, and Netflix hasn’t helped their case with so many abandoned adaptations that run for 1-2 seasons, and end with unresolved plot hooks and stories set up in the (now final) episode.
The unnamed corollary to Sturgeon’s Law is, “90% of people enjoy crap,” and that explains the negative effects that Netflix has had in the media sphere, in kind of a roundabout way.
Netflix is functionally an algorithm. Their success as a distributor of other IPs is based upon an extremely high-quality predictive model of what media people consume. And most people prefer to consume slop.
When Netflix started producing their own media in-house, and started getting successful with it, other studios and production companies took notice, and started using Netflix’s production tropes – everything from the de-saturated color palates to the tag-bundle characters to the tentpole writing. And everything started to look and feel like the same mediocre slop.
Gresham’s Law is applicable here as well…
And House of Cards became unwatchable when it dumped Spacey. I can’t remember the last modern series I finished. Billions started great and then lost it’s mind.
Neph:
What’s last bit of anythingto have any kind of widespread cultural impact? Not just is entertainment ephemeral, but “culture” is so fragmented that the purported popstars like T-Swizzle and BTS only reach a fraction of the population. The days of a true world-wide phenomenon are deader than a Pac-Man branded Rubix cube.
OITNB was “popular” among those people who were or wanted to be cultural gatekeepers of taste. I’ve still never seen an episode. And stuff I thought were Art (like Breaking Bad), even if they got some critical acclaim really never reached that wide of a slice of the total passively consumed media audience.
Not Adahn:
I’d say Game of Thrones, early MCU, ‘indie’ horror films, ‘Souls-like’ games, Baldur’s Gate 3, Yellowstone, Barbenheimer, and the Minecraft movie all had widespread cultural impact. Some splashes, others lingering. But the last thing from Netflix would be Stranger Things, which was fading with each new release.
Haven’t seen any of those things.
Mr Ilium – I would disagree quite heartily.
Those never even rippled through the normies in my office.
Of that list I would include only Game of Thrones. I have seen it parodied or referenced in a lot of e.g. sitcoms and animated shows. Not the others, and I don’t even know WTF one or two of those are.
I watched the first season of house of cards.
I finished Stranger things and Arested Development. Both shows went to total garbage and Stranger Things suicidednitself on the a rainbow alter
GoT is interesting because it did (does?) seem to have a cultural impact beyond the audience that’s actully ever watched something on HBO.
Barbenheimer was a short-term entertainment news story about two not terrible movies that appealed to different audiences that happened to be out in the theaters at the same time — in the midst of the worst cinema slump in the history of film.
BG3 hasn’t even had a cultural impact on me, and I’ve played through it three times.
I’d be willing to believe early MCU. With the note that Iron Man came out in 2008.
They need more Obama and Markle content …
WTF?
lolbigot
It is pretty amazing to see. During the middle of any dramatic scene on a Netflix series, all the characters have to talk about their fears and sexuality, then have a group make out session. Who writes that?
Every distributer wants to be a producer. Every producer wants to be a distributer. It makes for a siloed environment.
Not even just Netflix.
Watched Scream 7 and while I appreciate the wink to the audience, there were moments like what R.J mentioned (minus making out) where trauma needed to be addressed and “I see you” statements made….in a slasher film
The Duffer Brothers?
I think Top Gun Maverick was the last film I saw that didn’t have a dollop of woke in it. Everything else since 2020 has something that was woke and made it ridiculous.
Ownbestenemy: If I was making a slasher film, I would let all the characters start to discuss their trauma and then have the killer burst in and stab them all in the head before they could finish.
R.J.:
Both Bodies, Bodies, Bodies and the Blackening have fun bits around that.
That last season was BAD.
Having not one but two gay characters in a show set in the 80s in jr high/hifhschool.
Man the writers wernt Alice in the 80s if they thought that would have been accepted.
UnCiv: a good mnemonic is that the Japanese “no” can be replaced by “‘s” and the word order makes sense.
Nezumi no ken = rat’s sword or sword of rat.
Shichinin no Samurai?
I spent way too much time trying to make a joke off that.
Today isn’t starting so well.
Oopsie.
The business model for some of these AI companies is just wishful thinking.
Internet 3.0?
The business model is to attract tons of venture capital funding, which they’ve all been successful at doing.
It’s a (((plot))) to build Flock’s panopticon infrastructure on the cheap. Once the bubble pops, all those data centers will be bought at fire sale prices and repurposed to keep the adenochrome cattle under control.
I see NA is following some of the same SubStack accounts that show up on my Notes feed.
Is there nothing climate change can’t do? This time, it’s sorcery allegations in Papua New Guinea.

Bonus: Women hardest hit!
Can they do housework or bicycle delivery? Might be worth handing out a few hundred thousand green cards. We can hand-wave away the sorcery accusation-related violence.
Same group that asked that also wants to know “Does extreme rainfall trigger tribal violence in PNG?”
Sounds like they are the ones engaged in sorcery.
Elissa Slotkin is just pivoting from military members to a softer target.
Okay, scheduled email about yesterday’s snafu sending in 3min to assuage things and give slight info on my conundrum, which was really a silly and thoughtless, late-day mistake. I hope it goes well and have no reason to believe otherwise, as everything really is going okay other than handling too many new tasks at once.
Onward and up, y’all, and take it to the hoop.

“Released by the group We-Consent — a project of the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre which is supported by government agencies — the 25-second public service announcement boldly declares: “Not everyone wants a hug. Even from the people who love them.”
“Awkward? Maybe. Important? Absolutely,” the campaign adds.
The video features one grandchild happily hugging their grandparents, while another appears uncomfortable as her grandparents lean in for an embrace.”

OFFS!
Its the old whites that are sexually abusing family members of mixed race dontchaknow
Hugging your grandkids can turn them into rapists.
Better to sniff their hair instead.
I support this, I hate hugging.
I came here to say this.
^^^Found the autists!
As a kid I didn’t like the hugs from the aunts and other women relatives.
As a slightly older kid now I’m mostly appreciative when my kids/grandkids/great grand kids initiate the hug.
Now when we say “Good bye” it may well be “Good bye”
“Hug an Asian!”

“Modern Times Café, a Minneapolis restaurant that attempted to eliminate prices, has announced it will be closing for good by the end of the year….
“The only way for places like Modern Times to exist in the future is to actively challenge the reasons why it can no longer exist,” Alverson wrote.
Alverson announced on Instagram in January that his business, which rebranded as Post Modern Times, would operate as a “free and donation-based restaurant” where everyone would be welcome “except ICE” in protest of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations happening in his state, partly in response to the killings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti.”

Why do woke commutards keep trying this?
Because they’re functionally and economically retarded?
They should partner with someone who needs to launder money.
Not sure how successful they will be as a money laundering front since they have no, you know, income.
Ya a $9,999 donation for your meal might seem suspicious every on the planet except Minneapolis .
They should partner with someone who “knows how” to launder money.
A quick name change could easily put them in the black
I’m sure this is the conversation they had
The whole point of laundering money is you pretend you have more customers/provide more services than you actually have. It would be even better if said money laundering partner also owned a produce/meat supplier or dry goods seller or trash hauler.
I don’t know how ICE will recover.
Because they desperately need to believe that shitty food, shitty service, and no concept of economic reality should be not only rewarded but subsided by others. Voluntarily would be ideal, by force if necessary.
They misjudge how many non-New Soviet Men have been re-educated or liquidated in the locale where they are operating.
“Laura Danbom, who works at Amazon’s Seattle headquarters as a marketing and operations manager for Amazon Web Services, sued the e-commerce giant this week for allegedly subjecting her to a hostile work environment and for violating Washington State’s Silenced No More Act, which protects victims who speak up about workplace assaults from retaliation…..
Early in the evening, Danbom and Simonte, who continues to work for Amazon at its Madrid offices, “flirted,” “joked” and “got along,” according to the complaint. At the end of the night, Simonte “kissed her,” and “persuaded Laura” to let him accompany her to her hotel room, the complaint said….
“In Laura’s hotel room, during the early morning hours, Simonte raped her,” the complaint alleged. “Before the rape started, she said no. During the rape, Laura asked him: ‘you realize this is,’ and Simonte finished her sentence saying ‘rape? Yes.’ He ignored her protests. He raped her.””

Gotta ramp up the MeToo movement
Next, GamerGate 2.0…3.0?

Oh yes. Every day. It is ao predictable.
At this point, I don’t believe the claims until and unless proven otherwise.
I look forward to complaints about male employees refusing to be alone in a room with female employees.

“Los Angeles voters are fed up with the city’s direction, as rampant homelessness, soaring living costs and sky-high housing prices fuel frustration, a new California Post poll found.
A staggering two-thirds of those polled, 66.2%, said they were unhappy with the way the city was going, while just 16.4% believed it’s on the right track, according to the California Post-McLaughlin & Associates poll.”

Yet Spencer Pratt still lost.
Because in their minds the right track is socialism wasn’t going hard enough.
Ranked choice voting for the win!
Los Angeles doesn’t use ranked choice voting.
They don’t, but an all candidacy primary and run-off election is basically the same thing.
How did they get 2 democrats running for the same office?
However, it is on their ballot to switch to ranked choice starting in 2032. So pretty sure they will go that route.
@DrOtto Fraud. No LA election is going to be a reflection of the electorate’s actual votes.
“I don’t like who won, therefore ranked choice voting is evil!”
DrOtto:
‘Jungle Primary’ non-partisan primary, with the two candidates with the most votes advancing to the general.
Ted – Ranked Choice Voting is like roundabouts – people think they work on paper, but they fail when reality hits.
Roundabouts work just fine in some places and are terrible in others.
It’s not roundabouts that are the problem. The problem is the civil engineers who have become obsessed and want to see them everywhere.
Name recognition, a lot of Californians like Ramen.
And they’re about to elect an even harder communist.
Well done, dopes.
Pratt didn’t actually lose until the machine manufactured ballots after Ramen had already conceded to put her ahead of Pratt.

TW:TOS
“On October 13, Barnard junior Christina Ma and Columbia junior Nikos Mohammadi published an article called “The ‘Cornell Seven’ Is Really About Liberalism” in the Columbia Sundial, an independent student publication. The piece argued that the discourse surrounding the alleged rape at Cornell University infantilizes women by omitting the possibility that in a post–sexual revolution, liberal society, women may make regrettable but consensual choices….
The day after the article’s publication, the Columbia Open Discourse Alliance (CODA) canceled an event about press freedom because the Sundial’s editor in chief, Nick Baum, had been slated to speak at the event. Although Baum did not author the piece, CODA wrote in an Instagram post that the free speech group “refused” to be affiliated with the Sundial’s article “in any way.”
CODA also claimed that the event, ironically called “Who Gets to Tell the Story? Press Freedom and the Public Square,” could not take place at a time when “many survivors in our community feel that their stories are under attack and are not being believed.””
