Right and UCS was asking why the IDF warned the occupants. I have no problem with them blowing up the building if it was being used as a base of operations for Hamas and they deemed that it was in their best strategic interest, I was explaining to UCS why the IDF didn’t want to massacre innocent women and children.

I’ve rediscovered milk as the drink of choice these past few weeks. Cold and refreshing, drink a glass with every meal now. Whole milk, I need the protein and calories. Goes with fried food too.

Milk was my drink of choice growing up all the way through high school, even though the rest of my family drank Pepsi like it was water. I didn’t care for anything carbonated until college – Mello Yello helped me through many an all-nighter. Now I have to be cautious of my caffeine intake past noon. I’m getting back into milk somewhat – I’ve even become accustomed to skim. (Yeah, yeah – I know: something something water.) Makes even 2% a treat when I indulge. (A bit of Bailey’s doesn’t hurt. 😉 )
I was a farm lad, we had milk cows and grew up with all the great dairy products, then I moved onto coffee for 60 years, now full circle but I still want a little coffee every day. I liked the carbonated stuff in days of old, ‘specially when it had some adult beverage mixed in.
I like milk but seems milk is no longer liking me as I get older. Cheese and other dairy seems to still be ok.
I don’t know if I could live without cheese.
I developed a lactose intolerance as I entered middle age.
Milk – no. Some cheeses – OK, other cheese not OK. Yogurt and Kefir – OK. Small amounts of ice cream – OK.
I love milk. I feel sorry for those weirdoes who can’t drink it.
Same goes for those cilantro hating miscreants. I don’t drink milk at all anymore but probably should. I get my calcium from way too much cheese and protein drinks.

I have been looking at mountain bikes to buy recently. I called a local bike shop to place an order and was told the bike was on backorder through next September. I asked about some other bikes and they were also on backorder through next spring and next summer.
This is the bike I want to order.

Can’t help. I have one of these I would be willing to part with. It is a great bike but a bit too small for me. I am short and right between sm/med frame size. I recently bought a med frame Diamond Back that fits me better. I don’t always feel like I am going over the bars on downhills on it. That was a bit unnerving when riding the Fuji.
I had one of my bikes worked on at the local bike shop. The girlfriend saw all the bikes ready to go out, and asked about the bike shortage. The workers pointed out that every bike in the store was sold, and they were looking at 8-12 month lead times for bikes.
I was hoping to pick up a touring bike this year, it’s on the goals for next year now. With a bit of Craigslist hunting come fall.
I grabbed up one of the last ones of these from bicycle warehouse before the full on run on bikes this year.
You guys are big shots. I ride a 1981 Schwinn Heavy-Duti. Industrial yellow and all original. It has a crappy seat and crappy gearing. The seat is just aged out, and I keep meaning to get a two speed kick back hub for it.
I just checked, mine’s worth around 400-600 bucks now, probably the higher end because I have the original one model only (and just a few years only) yellow fenders.

I know of a guy who lost his job during the gov’t reaction to the pandemic and ended up in the bicycle repair game due to how long bike shops are/were taking on repairs when this thing started. He’s now self-employed and quite busy himself. The funny thing is I’m an auto mechanic and I was able to pass him on to several of my customers who were asking if I could fix their bikes.
Bikes are insanely back ordered right now. I live across the street from a bike shop and they said this past year has been their best in biz by far. That coupled with supply chain disruptions and factory shutdowns have left most decent bikes back ordered. I’ve been looking at getting a Santa Cruz mountain bike myself to get back into the sport. You may want to check out Mike’s Bikes as it looks like only a 3 month wait with them.
Wow. Been thinking of a “city bike” for a while. Guess there’s no rush.
If you’re just looking for a simple hybrid you can likely get a good deal just by searching Craigslist for used ones. It’s the higher end stuff that is really hard to find right now.

Today was a good day for me mentally overall, despite some level of anxiety at the grocery store (as mentioned earlier).
My question at both of the breweries I was at today was how much they were looking forward to June 2nd. The other one was an owner, and said, “You can’t believe how much I’m looking forward to it.”
The idiots here are trying to write up new rules for mandatory verification. Or businesses can leave their own mask mandates in place. And no problems because it’s all “voluntary”.

I got a little battery Stihl saw for my wife so she could use it out in the yard where her current electric Stihl couldn’t reach. I’ve used it more than she has and have been loving it for small tasks. Definitely won’t replace my gasser but it has a place.
Speaking of cordless electric string trimmers, do any of you Middle-Aged Men who know from lawn care know if there’s owt can be done about a trimmer whose automatic line feed doesn’t feed often enough? (Note: NOT a bump-feed.) My Black & Decker Grasshog (several years old) will be down to a little stub of line for so long I often stop to unwind some more by hand.
Not sure about that type. Maybe make sure it’s clean and doesn’t have grass debris build up, lubricated (if it’s supposed to be), and the line isn’t welding either from heat from the driveshaft or storage temp/age/sunlight? YouTube has helped me out with a number of oddball OPE repairs.
Is it self feeding or require a manual feed?
It used to be better about feeding more line automatically when the line wore out and got trimmed off, if that’s what you mean by “self-feeding.” It’ll stop trimming well, and I’ll check it and find less than an inch of line sticking out. At that point, I remove the cover and unwind some more off the spool.
I’m going to bed, but if you have any other ideas, I’ll watch for your answer in the morning. Thanks!
I’m no expert but based on having that problem I would try:
1.clearing anything obstructing the line
2. Check the spool of nylon line. If it wasn’t wound correctly it won’t feed out correctly.
3. Change the spool. If it works properly then the old spool was the problem.

IDF does what is known as roof knocking. They drop a non-explosive ordnance on the building as a warning to evacuate. They also call Palestinian security contacts who help evacuate the buildings before bombing. Considering Hamas indiscriminately fires rockets into Israel, I’m fine with how the IDF works.

Food update (because that’s what we do, right?): Grilled BBQ pork steaks were juicy and tender, and mine only had a tiny bit of bone (not a euphemism.) I didn’t even manage to shove the bone fragment in my mouth by mistake. Whipped up a small batch of mashed potatoes (confession: from a box,) plopped ’em on a baking sheet, covered them with shredded Mexican cheese blend, and stuck them under the broiler for a few minutes. (TT’s idea, and they were all for him ’cause carbs.) They got a thumbs-up-would-eat-again. Rounded out the meal with my favorite kind of lazy cook’s veggies. All in all, a delightful repast.

When we first bought our house and I started going to the farmers’ market a few blocks away, one of the vendors made a wonderful one with a lattice crust and just the right amount of tartness. Sadly for me, they retired some years back. The German Baptist market I mentioned above also came to that farmers’ market until a couple of years ago. Theirs was not quite tart enough for my taste, but still good.

I was out at a local brewpub for dinner and live music. The live music was outside. The weather was just right tonight.
The musician, half way through his performance, made a quip about not taking a break. “I’m not going on break, I’m not a union guy.” A customer, who was putting on his mask as he was going inside the brewpub, saw me smile at the quip and said, “He just lost his tip for that union joke.” I wasn’t going to tip the musician because he wasn’t that good, but I resolved then to tip him, and tip him well.
After I paid my tab and used the men’s room, I went outside and tipped the musician big.
It was a good night.

The bad news: somehow our off-menu Manhattans got lost in the shuffle and took _way_ too long to arrive. The good news: the bar made it up to us with quite generous servings. Including the second round.

Right on, it’s good to get back to some normality. For the first time in a year we had a family lunch all together (my parents had six kids, five of us still living, with their partners and kids) in a restaurant for my youngest’s sixth birthday and my parents 50th anniversary. I wouldn’t call it normal as one of my sister in laws and my sister wore masks when not eating, but everyone else was more than happy to not bother with the ridiculousness. My mom almost didn’t leave the house for a year aside from seeing us outside a handful of times, but once she got vaccinated she has been ready to get back to life.

Last evening the oldest was out at a game with his grandpa and the youngest was at his study prep class so it was just the wife and I – pretty rare these days. Most of our before-times favorite places have closed shop and we settled for an OK Italian-esque place. They seated us but immediately my wife caught a vibe and checked the “special menu” – they aren’t serving booze due to the recent emergency measures. The only reason I wanted to go to that shop was to start with a couple glasses of bubbly then go for a nice red.
So we ordered out and I picked up a nice chilled Cava on the way home. Blah – my coffee is better anyway.

Yikes – one of the few silver linings of this pandemic response has been a relaxing of rules around booze – I can (and have) gotten cocktails to go now – I _really_ hope that one sticks.

Gah! You guys are still zooming?!? I just got into bed after a full afternoon/evening event in Imperial Beach. It was the birthday and end-of-chemo-and-radiation day for an old friend of my husband’s.
Then I had to drive us home and change my spouse’s last IV bag of antibiotics. Then do some laundry.
I’m pooped physically but still wanted to see what Glibs are up to. I failed to account for Saturday Zoom.

Police say that the overwhelming majority of police are good people doing a difficult and dangerous job. I’m willing to concede that claim. There are roughly 700,000 police in the U.S. If only one half of one percent of them are really bad guys, that translates to 3,500 really bad guys with badges. And that translates to a lot of havoc.
But if they let the bad guys stay, then they can’t call themselves the good guys. The bad guys should be in jail, and the not so good guys should be fired.
True. But, to be fair, the really bad guys aren’t going to announce themselves. They’re going to claim to be good guys.
We need reform. But, understanding the math at least would give us some honest basis for discussion. That said, I’m not sure either side is all that interested in that.
As long as there are PubSec unions, there will be no real reform. Same with teachers.
I wonder, too, what personality types tend to gravitate to careers in law enforcement. Does it reflect the general population, or does it attract those more prone to controlling others and/or seeking out conflict?

Controlling or insecure personalities are certainly an issue with bad cops.
But most cops are just run-of-the-mill useless people. With all due respect to veterans here, most of these people are marginal and were military, and they just bumble around from place to place being told where to be, what to wear, and what to do, and when they can have leave. One of the harmful tropes that runs in the “trust cops” family is the “honorable service” trope we have for the military. . . this culture is the foundation for two things: a mindless need to employ thugs to ride herd on others, and the even more mindless notion that we get what we pay for (viz, we have peace and order, not because most people are good, but because our thugs intimidate and control others into behaving most of the time).
I don’t object to reform notions, but the root problem is too many missions, too many laws. We need all these soldiers lying around all these bases so that we can slap some equatorial island back into line if they scare the American children in their med school, and we need all these cops to enforce all these Baptist notions of why you can’t pursue whatever consensual, victimless behavior you might prefer.
We have a mountain of ugly. Thousands die; millions are abused. And we as a nation can’t tell the difference between cause and effect; we just sit like lumps paying our taxes so that people who are too useless to even start a lawn service can parachute into Cambodia or Compton and slap colored folk back into line.
I suspect you’re partially right about the personality types. But, I suspect it needs to break down further. As much as bullies meet that description, so do protectors.
Obviously, as a libertarian, the latter is what I want our cops to be. I guess the question is how do you get more of them than bullies?

Got a good 4 mile walk in yesterday. Lots of hard inclines too. I fell out of bed and crawled to the bathroom when I woke up. I don’t think there was any other way to get out of bed on time.
