Let’s talk about Duran Duran’s sophomore album, Rio. While the band has produced many great albums over the last 40 years, I believe this is their masterwork. Bouncy and light, dark and mysterious, Rio has a bit of everything. The bass is featured heavily in just about every song, and the band overall displays lyrical and songwriting prowess. This album has so many great songs, I’ll need to make two parts just for this album.

You will be familiar, no doubt, with mega-hits “Rio” and “Hungry Like The Wolf”. Both excellent pieces of pop in their own right, but let’s dive deeper, shall we?

Lonely in Your Nightmare – 1982. There’s something so…sexy about this song. A sense longing for a lost love, an attempt at re-seduction. With haunting harmonies on the chorus, this song makes me want to fall in love with a mysterious stranger.

Because there’s heat beneath your winter, let me in

Last Chance on the Stairway – 1982. To me this song is a bit of a departure. Less in the New Romantic style, it gives me more of a 90’s college radio soft-alt-rock vibe. Simon Le Bon notes that this song is about a night out and coming home with a beautiful companion. Notice the frenetic bass line compared to the smooth lyrics. I really dig the unexpected xylophone interlude.

It could be the atmosphere sinkingOoh, I don’t know what you’re thinkingI don’t even know what you’re drinkingBut it keeps this heaven alive

Next up, a couple more from Rio, including an entry from the Itty Bitty Titty Committee.
