Two friends of mine, thousands of miles apart who don’t know each other, each with a daughter who “identifies as nonbinary” and go by they/them, changed their names, the whole bit. My two friends are all on board. The weird thing is they both dress like girly girls.
That said, I do know that at least one of the girls has some serious mental health problems and is in and out of psychiatric facilities (this is not a judgment). I do believe that friend thinks it’s a phase and is going along with it so as to not trigger any more episodes of cutting or suicide attempts. I don’t know about my other friend’s kid. I know my brother’s ex-boyfriend’s daughter did this, and the dad, who hates it, goes along with it so as not to make the kid hate him. My brother, as a gay man, also hates the whole trans thing.
But we all know gay men are the white men of the QUILTBAG.
Girls seem to be at particular risk of the current phenomenon. They’re craving some sort of social currency.
As a society, we should be directing them to ameliorate their self-loathing with productive activities. Instead we’re feeding them delusions. It cannot end well.
Are there more MtoF or FtoM? Serious question.
We are personally not exposed to too much of the social changes (nor would we care). My kids and grandkids are on the more conservative side, though one has a bit of liberalism but with your money.

For the longest time, almost all transitions were MTF. FTM were extremely rare. In the last decade or so there has been a massive increase in FTM in the U.S., Canada, and Europe. Some say a 4,000% increase, but exact numbers are impossible. While it’s not strictly monocausal, that increase is largely due to ideologues targeting children. That being said, I’m thinking there are still more MTF. Definitely worldwide, if you consider 50% of people in Brazil claim they personally know a MTF, and you can’t swing a dead cat in Thailand without hitting a katoi.

I think the factors you list are reasons why the social contagion is so virulent. Those existed to some degree before the current outbreak. If I’m looking for a variable that changed in the last few years, it’s not those (I don’t think).
“Non-binary” is, I think, a clue, since it’s a formless, amorphous thing that requires little more than an announcement and maybe some fashion choices. To me (and I have little direct contact with teenagers who claim to be “non-binary”) it requires about as much commitment as being goth or skater or punk.
And the normal response to a social contagion (“eh, let it run its course) doesn’t apply here because of the rush to surgery.

A number of years ago (50) I had surgery on a leg. Removed the varicose veins from my left leg, lots of veins. Any way I recovered physically but for months after I felt like something was missing. I would guess maybe a year. Just kind of lingering in the back of my mind. I can’t imagine what losing a limb or parts of the male anatomy would be like psychologically.
BTW, the next layer of veins are ugly and sticking out but that’s the way it’s gonna be.

Interesting that he chose to include studies on testosterone from Emory university. I actually used to work at the primate center there where they did work on the topic. Males who were subordinate were subjected to humiliations from the alphas and their testosterone levels were low as a result. They actually showed that looking at a sexually receptive female increased testosterone levels and improved measurements of mood, energy levels and staved off malaise.
They started with a female in an adjacent cage, but due to logistics issues the switched to a video, which also worked.

In our soil (a thin layer of sand and gravel well on its way to becoming sedimentary rock, on top of granite), laying the lines is a bitch. I was reading a little article today about the boys from my high school who have given their lives overseas — eleven in Viet Nam, one each in Iraq and Afghanistan. It was while reading about the last that I came upon something that kinda bothers me:
He died in a helicopter crash on a training mission. Not an enemy for dozens of miles in any direction. When his body was returned to his hometown, his hearse was driven by a couple of schoolchildren standing at the side of the road waving American flags. He was buried after a small service in a local cemetery. Maybe his parents still come by on his birthday or Memorial Day, but other than that, he’s largely forgotten.
Meanwhile, the West Point grad who made a rookie mistake and suffered spatial disorientation and flew the chopper into the ground, killing the entire crew and destroying a multi-million-dollar asset, was buried with full military honors in Arlington National Cemetery.
I don’t know why that bothers me, but it does.
