Crispy, Seasoned Beef

I’m back, just getting caught back up and realized once Starlink gets through beta testing in a few years, I can probably be sitting in a tent mounted to a pickup truck and working productively in my own basecamp outside of Bryce Canyon.  Do I need to own the campground?  Hell no.  I’ll move the truck if you ask.

This is my review of La Cumbre Azulito Mexican Lager:

I have to apologize for the stream of consciousness but this begins with  a public health emergency in Ohio:

Human Parainfluenza (HPIV) is circulating and has many of the same symptoms as influenza which we see in the fall and winter, and COVID.

HPIV can cause upper and lower respiratory illnesses in infants, young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems, but anyone can get infected.

Just so we’re clear this is not the flu nor is it COVID, but its worth mentioning because holy crap people if this takes hold upon the tenuous fear of the mob we’re going to become experts in Human Parainfluenza.  Its just like it though but its not the flu or COVID.

Which is like saying any thick, juicy cut of meat is steak.  Well, its not.  Steak is steak, and any attempt to prove to me otherwise is just propaganda from the people that want you to eat less steak because cows cause climate change.

This rebrand of familiar terms to mask the appearance of what is and what is not, has been the plan for decades.  An example early in my experience was in the late-90’s when Oprah Winfrey dedicated an episode of her show to the potential dangers of Mad-Cow disease.  This caused her to yet again do what she does best:  enable white women.  The conglomerate of big beef interests sued for defamation but ultimately lost as back then Oprah Winfrey technically had freedom of speech.  As a result demand for beef dropped for some time out of fears of mad cow.

But there were other scares during that time to create animosity for the beef industry.  Another example was the 2001 Bovine Foot and Mouth outbreak in the UK.  Even earlier was the 1993 Jack in the Box E. Coli outbreak that made sure that burgers could never again be tasty as they could only be sold in one way:  overcooked and possibly burned.

I guess the moral of the story is if you are in Ohio and not feeling too well, stay at home and rest for a bit.  In the meantime, fortify your immune system by enjoying a delicious and nutrient dense meal.  Like a steak.

Accept no substitutes.

Blue corn is often used in Mexican food as it sometimes comes in the lovely blue color in its indigenous form.  It is however, often a gimmick.  The fact is though, you eat with your eyes first so I sometimes will purchase blue corn tortillas for taco night because of the novelty.  In the end though, its a bit different but more or less tastes the same.  So when an outfit from New Mexico throws in blue corn in place of yellow corn for use as an adjunct for a traditional Mexican lager you can rest assured it tastes exactly the way its supposed to—excellent.  Although points were lost because I am admittedly disappointed the beer didn’t come out blue. La Cumbre Azulito Mexican Lager:  2.8/5 4.7% ABV

“Kars4Kids CEO suing over gun law that targets Jewish NYers ‘where children are’

Religious Jews in New York have become sitting ducks for antisemitic attacks due to the concealed carry gun law passed last year, the CEO of the nonprofit Kars4Kids claims in a new lawsuit.

Eliyohu Mintz is taking aim at the Concealed Carry Improvement Act, which prevents most New Yorkers from bringing weapons into places of religious observation or summer camps — and which he is seeking to be deemed unconstitutional, according to the June 30 Albany Federal Court filing against the state.

In addition to heading Kars4Kids — known for its ubiquitous ad jingle — Mintz is CEO of the Jewish charity Oorah, which runs a summer camp in Schoharie County.

“The violent attacks on Jewish people targeting places of worship and places where children are — the most vulnerable of the population — are random and provide the victims with no notice or advance warning,” Mintz, a concealed-carry permit holder, said in court papers.

“I cannot be left unprepared and unarmed in the event that an evildoer decides to attack one or both of the campuses, nor can the other licensed staff members.”

The suit is one of several to challenge the Concealed Carry Improvement Act, which was swiftly passed and signed by Gov. Kathy Hochul in July 2022 in the wake of the Supreme Court striking down New York’s longstanding law determining who could obtain a concealed-carry gun permit.”

    steak (n.)
mid-15c., “thick slice of meat cut for roasting,” probably from a Scandinavian source such as Old Norse steik “roast meat,” related to steikja “to roast on a spit,” and ultimately meaning “something stuck” (on a spit), from Proto-Germanic *staiko-, from PIE *steig- “to stick; pointed” (see stick (v.)).
    also from mid-15c.

    Conscientious capitalism

“When companies agree to work together to punish disfavored views or industries, or to otherwise advance environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals, this coordinated behavior may violate the antitrust laws and harm American consumers,” Republicans wrote.

That same month, West Virginia’s Republican Treasurer Riley Moore joined a growing chorus of GOP state financial officers calling on the chief executive of BlackRock, Larry Fink, to step down.

“I think Larry Fink should resign,” said Moore, who is now running for a seat in the House of Representatives, in an interview with The Federalist. “I don’t think he’s obviously somebody who’s too concerned about what policymakers in the United States think.”

    ——-

As the finance sector religiously implements Environmental, Social, Governance (ESG) goals, which prioritize climate extremism and left-wing social politics over shareholder interests, BlackRock has been the primary driver. In recent days, however, Fink has tried to distance himself from the ESG term. Last month, the CEO said the ESG moniker has been “misused by the far left and the far right” but re-affirmed his devotion to “conscientious capitalism,” which is just ESG by another name.

Listen to Larry. He knows what’s good for you.

As per usual, these reviews reveal more about the reviewers than the movie.

They’re probably bitter people who are forced to carry water for shitty movies in most circumstances. When presented with an opportunity to unload on people they don’t care for anyway, they let loose.

      • Nerfherder (Non-Non-Man)

Caviezel made it his business to cynically pander to this conservative religious audience, long before he starred in TV’s “Person of Interest,” which was canceled because he’s just not an interesting, expressive actor.

Those dumb religious people will buy anythin’ if you put Jeezus on it.

        • cyto

To be fair, this used to be my view of Christian rock back in the 90s when people tried to get me to listen to stryper.

Shortly their after. Actual talented people began making a lot of money in the Christian music arena and that critique no longer applied.

Passion of the Christ kind of did that for faith films. They are mostly much better than they used to be… Even if some are made-for-TV level, they are more often than not at least competent.

          • cyto

Also… Is anyone else struggling with virtual keyboards and auto correct? Mine has taken to “correcting” correctly spelled words into different and unintended words. Witness “thereafter” above.

One particular annoyance is that somehow one of the spell check algorithms I am subject to has decided that when I type “this” I often mean “thus”. So more than half the times I use “this” in a sentence, I have to go back and change “thus” back to my intended word. Often more than once.

(And yet, typing that paragraph, I had to fix the automatic conversion of “thus” into “”this” both times. )

            • Mojeaux

I don’t have autocorrect or even predictive text on. All my typos are my own.

Hollywood used to make faith films as mainstream movies. Sometimes just another movie with plot line, but a number of films from the golden age would be now regarded as fringe religious movies if made today.

They’re actually pretty good. Obviously, (((I))) have different religious beliefs. But I have to give these credit. They love hard rock and heavy metal. They are faithful Christians and they wanted to play the music they love with the beliefs they have. They were the first ones to do it and effectively pioneered a new subgenre. Kudos to them.

          • Nerfherder (Non-Non-Man)

I’m not a particular aficionado. Most of the “Made for Christians” product is average at best.

But in the same breath that assholes like Klee would offer nothing but judgement and disdain for something with political leanings they don’t care for, they would also praise utter tripe like Kraven, the trailer for which was practically unwatchable.

They’re just cheap whores for the Left.

            • Shpip

Most of the “Made for Christians” product is average at best.

              Sturgeon’s Law says hello.

And while Mo is right that Stryper wasn’t awful, they were hair metal, which means they’re getting graded on a curve. Any band in that genre that learned a fourth chord were instant gods.

            • Nephilium

Ugh. I’m a bigger Spider-Man fanboy then almost anyone, and the trailer from Kraven killed any interest I had in it. I didn’t have a lot of faith after Morbius, but still…

              • Chafed

I’m at a loss why Marvel thinks minor villains can carry a movie. I’m at a greater to loss understand why they believe using people who hate the source material will lead to a popular movie.

              • Nephilium

Kraven is fully Sony, not Marvel. Sony has the Spider-Man license, and they’re going to run it into the ground. Kraven is also a fairly important Spider-Man villain, but has always been a villain.

I would prefer more super-hero movies not going to save the universe/galaxy/world and just deal with something street level again.

There are only 3 reviews by “top critics”. These two, and a positive review by Variety.

Interesting that the two negative reviews are either overtly political or tinted with politics.

Meanwhile. I just learned that Michael Medved doesn’t count as a top critic to Rotten Tomatoes.

Wow. They really have gone full woke. He is unequivocally one of the top critics, and has been so for decades. But being a family and faith guy is now disqualifying, I suppose.

So… 78% of not-top-critics at Rottentomatoes give this a positive review. And only 33% of top critics view it positively. And only 3 even deigned to review it. I think Adam Carrolla is onto something.

      • cyto

Meanwhile, the audience score is 99%. That is their new “verified audience”, so only people who bought tickets online, I suppose. 5,000+ strong.

    • Nerfherder (Non-Non-Man)

Miles Klee looks and sounds like your typical political queer whose main role at Rolling Stone is to mock anyone who threatens the woke narrative, and not in a particularly intelligent way.

The hilarity is in his constant “debunking” of the portrayed heroics, as if Hollywood doesn’t constantly oversell and amp up the stories they adapt.

    • Gustave Lytton

So let me get this right. Human trafficking is happening everywhere all of the time so that flight attendants and taxi drivers need to step in, but child trafficking is just a figment of fevered minds.

      • Nerfherder (Non-Non-Man)

        Now you’re getting it.

Cognitive dissonance is a hell of a drug.

      • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

I’m somewhat skeptical of the movie because human trafficking is one of those phrases that’s been redefined to be almost meaningless and because I don’t trust any movie “based on real events”. That said, what I’ve read about the movie the story doesn’t deviate from the truth any more than other movies inspired by true events, and the negative reviews don’t say that this stuff didn’t happen, just that the protagonist is icky.

        • R C Dean

I have zero doubt the truth about children being trafficked for sex, if it were known, would drive decent human beings into a homicidal rage.

Re Starlink and backwoods access: Paging KK. KK to the white courtesy phone.

    • R.J.

We discussed that briefly on a Zoom. 5G routers are still a superior option in many cases. Starlink has yet to roll out across the entire nation. Even when it does, the wider rollout of 5G may beat it.

      • milo

I thought I read that one of 5G drawbacks is limited range. That and the data caps. I used a 4G router once.
I’m looking for a residential solution though. Not a mobile one.

        • R.J.

Where I am, Frontier bought the Verizon network. Originally people though the network was doomed. Frontier has been great. Highly recommend if their fiber is available. I can run three work computers and any number of streaming devices with no latency.

          • milo

The only fiber around here is Metamucil. Miles away and I don’t see it getting here…maybe ever.
I have a pretty stable 100mbps DSL connection (and that’s the fastest available). It’s $145/month. Seems high compared to some of my friends but they are closer to a town than me.

          • Chafed

            I have the same experience.

        • R.J.

Also 5G is being pushed as a replacement for home internet. It’s the first OTA network that can actually do that. There are dedicated 5G modems now.

          • Gustave Lytton

Or course it’s being pushed. Wireless companies have reached near saturation and are trying to figure out how to keep their growth rates up without being solely poaching and being poached by fellow companies.

All wireless broadband is ultimately crap with higher costs and trade offs.

          • Nephilium

There are, but they still are wireless. Wired connections are better in any standard use case.

      • Mojeaux

Re 5G, at least on my phone and my mom’s phone.

I hate it. She hates it. My husband hasn’t noticed. We don’t get near the service we used to on 4G and considering her phone is her only internet connection (because she lives out in the boonies), it’s tres inconvenient. However, I DO NOT live out in the boonies. I could have Google Fiber if I wanted, which I don’t, and still my 5G service and reception is shit. No, we cannot force our phones to use 4G. There is no option for that.

I don’t know how a 5G router might be different from a phone, but if it has “5G” on it, I’m not going to trust it.

    • milo

I’m curious about it. It’s supposed to go live here this year. I’m interested because my current and only ISP is overpriced and the ISP’s customer service leaves a lot to be desired.

I have to admit, mine sucks somewhat less than it used to.

    Rambo is on the lam

Michael Burnham escaped from a jail in Warren, near a huge forest, overnight on Thursday.

The public has been told to be vigilant and report suspicious people.

He was last seen wearing an orange-and-white striped jumpsuit, croc shoes and a jail-issued blue denim jacket.

Officials say the jail noticed he was missing on Friday morning, and that he managed to escape by climbing the equipment and exiting through a metal roof.

He then used bed sheets that he tied together to lower himself off the roof.

“We have no indication that he’s being assisted by anyone at this point, but he is familiar [with] the area and… he is a survivalist and has survivalist skills,” said Warren County spokeswoman Cecile Stelter.

The jail is located around 18 miles (28km) from Jamestown, New York, near the Pennsylvania border and is near the Allegheny National Forest.

The size of the forest is approximately 515,000 acres, according to the US Department of Agriculture, which oversees US national forests.

They’ll never catch him. He’ll pick them off one by one.
