If You Don’t Stop It, You’ll Go Blind

Time for another edition of “Can They Make This Today?” This movie has great off-color jokes combined with randomly naked people. I figured this movie would be good bet for Thursday as it takes great joy in puns and bad jokes. It might result in more narrowed gazes than a Sergio Leone movie. Just think about it as you watch: Could you even show this in theaters today?  Discuss in the comments.

Some notes and trivia:

  • The was the first film role for Robin Williams, who did badly so his scene was cut. I wish that was saved somewhere. He did make it in the sequel, Can I Do It Till I Need Glasses?
  • “Omar, the World’s Greatest Lover” should be a Glibs handle. The Omar sketch shows up towards the end.
  • This was directed and written by I. Robert Levy, who later edited The Rockford Files.
  • Mike Callie put together a lot of these jokes. He had over 6,000 joke books when he died.  No, the giant pile of joke books didn’t crush him. He also produced a movie called The Green Girl, which was about the life and times of Susan Oliver who played the green girl on Star Trek.
  • Midway through is a musical number. Avoid it like the plague.  It’s about 10 minutes. 10 minutes too long. I rarely say anything negative like this, so fair warning.

My thoughts: If this were released today, a combination of right-wing hatred of sexual content combined with left wing hatred of the lack of fair LGBTQ representation would kill this at the box office if it even made it to an R rating. There would never have been a sequel. What do you think?  Watch!  Or Don’t! Everything is voluntary! Next week, we bump forward in time to the good old 21st century and see Punk Fu Zombie! What made me pick that film?  A review by Jennie Kermode:

“Sometimes, even in genres like science fiction and horror, a film comes along that is so far out of left field as to be almost unreviewable. Punk Fu Zombie, which premièred at Fantasia, is one of those films. Whether or not it’s any good is almost beside the point. There was a world before Punk Fu Zombie and there is a world afterwards. They are not the same.”

But is it any good?  Who knows?  It’s a blindfold post next week on GlibFlick!

    I’m going to try Tubi.

    • R.J.

It should work. You got a TV with streaming now, right?

      • Common Tater

I have an Android TV in the living room, but this TV doesn’t have internet, so computer to TV via HDMI.

    • Common Tater

Picture quality is pretty bad, but that’s probably the source. Looks like VHS.

      • UnCivilServant

Looks like the 1970s to me.

        Weren’t those years grainy?

        • R.J.

Totally. Grainy in the theater too.

        • John Nerfherder

Hairy, with a strong scent of Hai Karate

          • R.J.

That too. And everything smelled like cheap cigarettes.

            • R C Dean

              Good times, good times . . . .

              • R.J.

                Indeed! I miss them.

            • DrOtto

Just bought a pack of American Spirits – $12.33 for the pack. Ain’t no such thing as cheap cigarettes anymore.

              • Common Tater

That’s ridiculous, and one reason why I vape. Although government taxes and regulations make that more expensive too.

              • rhywun

I saw a guy in the elevator this afternoon with a pack of cigarettes in his hand. I couldn’t take my eyes off it.

One day at a time, sigh.

              • DrOtto

I only have a cigarette or 2 while drinking, but not even every time I drink. I rarely make it through a pack before they go stale. I don’t know what it is about smoking, but it’s very enjoyable in the moment in a way vaping can’t match. I think a lot of it for me is it’s very counter-culture to smoke or at least tolerate smokers.

              • rhywun

I only have a cigarette or 2 while drinking

lol I know myself well enough that if I tried that shit I’d be back to two Juul pods (or whatever replaces them now that they are for some reason illegal) a day in no time.

              • Common Tater

                Juul pods are illegal?

              • rhywun

I heard they were banned recently. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

                Seeing conflicting reports now.
I am kind of glad to get out while the getting is good.

              • Common Tater

                So you quit vaping?

              • rhywun

Yah, did the patch. That ended about a month ago. It has been… interesting.

        • The Other Kevin

          I was grainy then too.

          • R.J.

I’m still grainy if you see me on a Zoom.

        • Common Tater

Plenty of 70’s movies look great.

This quality is worse than 16mm.

          • R.J.

I think TedS nailed it. The director was awful. And no doubt the cheapest film possible was used.

            • Common Tater

Cheap film wouldn’t explain this. Looks like it was converted to video a long time ago.

  2. UnCivilServant

Of course it couldn’t be made today. You don’t even need to ask.

  3. Common Tater

“He also produced a movie called The Green Girl, which was about the life and times of Susan Oliver who played the green girl on Star Trek.”

Wow, I need to find that.

    • R.J.

      Link provided. Also on Tubi.

      • Common Tater

        Oh, OK.

Samuel L Jackson’s kiss of his Skrull wife at the end of Secret Invasion is a trans allegory. Change my mind.

Speaking of, some music by Walter/Wendy Carlos came on earlier today. One of the first public transexuals. I looked her up. Found this:

In 1998, Carlos sued the songwriter/artist Momus for $22 million regarding the song “Walter Carlos” (from the album The Little Red Songbook, released that year), which postulated that after the sex reassignment surgery Wendy could travel back in time to marry her pre-transition self, Walter. The case was settled out of court, with Momus agreeing to remove the song from subsequent editions of the CD and owing $30,000 in legal fees.

      • Pat

Undoubtedly settled due to the cost of litigation, but I can’t imagine that would have withstood the actual malice standard at trial.

      • Common Tater

She is known for being ridiculously litigious.

      • Zwak , “There is infinite amount of hope in the universe… just not for us.”

My thoughts: If this were released today, a combination of right-wing hatred of sexual content combined with left wing hatred of the lack of fair LGBTQ representation would kill this at the box office

Somewhat unsurprisingly, the left has become as prudish as the right, especially the Andrea Dworkin “all sex is rape” wing of feminism. Who, 20 years ago, would have figured on “intimacy coordinators” unironically being a thing on Hollywood film sets?

Sadly, I cannot indulge this evening, as I must finish my packing at an accelerated pace. Title work on my new property got buttoned up a little bit early. I just wired over funds a few hours ago, and closing is tomorrow morning. Let’s fucking GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

    • R.J.

I heard you weren’t moving to TX. Sad, I am. I’ll see you someday.

      • Pat

I heard you weren’t moving to TX.

You heard wrong, sir. Although east TX didn’t work out. I’m going to be a little west of Abilene.

        • R.J.

Yay! I’ll send you an email.

    • John Nerfherder

Any sex with Dworkin would have to be rape on her part.

      *shudder*

      • Common Tater

She married a gay man, afaik.

    • Brochettaward

I don’t think the modern right is all that prudish and would mind some sex back in their movies.

The puritanical left and the Chinese market are what has led to them doing away with it. We can see it with Oppenheimer. Not a peep out of the right, but some on the left lost their shit.

      • Pat

We can see it with Oppenheimer. Not a peep out of the right, but some on the left lost their shit.

I saw a headline that the Hindus were upset that the Oppenheimer character reads from the bhagavad gita during a sex scene.

I believe “intimacy coordinators” aka “choreographers” started way back when Kubrick couldn’t get Tom Cruise to do right with Nicole Kidman in Eyes Wide Shut (I will be forever convinced that movie killed whatever was left of their marriage). He apparently had to choreograph everything so it would look right for the camera.

Also, +1 Monster’s Ball “intimacy coordinators.”

      • Common Tater

I just assume anyone who is a scientologist is secretly gay.

“Look at television now, versus 20 years ago,” Carteris said. “I mean, it’s so sexually explicit now…. Think about before I began [acting]; we had to sleep in separate beds, and you couldn’t show a woman being pregnant. Now it’s everything.”

I am now down a few IQ points for having read that.

      • rhywun

Hey Mo OT – can you remember the name again of that Kindle “helper” software?

        • Mojeaux

When you say “helper,” do you mean “cracking” software?

I think when we chatted, I pointed you to this: https://apprenticealf.wordpress.com/ There should be a suite of python scripts for various file types. Let me know if you can’t find it. I’ve been using it for 15 years so I don’t know what changes it’s undergone or anything.

However, I think Calibre can do it with a plugin now. https://calibre-ebook.com/

          • R.J.

This is correct. i have Calibre on my Linux. It can do that.

          • rhywun

Yaaa the top link is the one, thanks. I got it work on Macs years ago. It wasn’t easy.

But I’m on Windows now. I will investigate these later 🙂

I have this urge to replace some paperbacks with text versions and dump the rest. Because I am tired of carrying them around from move to move.

            • Pat

I just threw out the last remaining pile of my dead tree books the other day. It turned out I already had digital copies of them all anyway.

              • rhywun

                It’s ridiculous.

                My hardcovers, sure, they’re keepers.

But I have a pile of paperbacks the newest of which is around 2007. Why the hell am I carrying these around?!

              • rhywun

I should add that all of them were sitting in boxes that I have not opened since the last time I moved in 2012.

              • rhywun

But as I’m taking inventory I realize that a LOT of them are books I want to read again. (Or for the first time….)

              • Mojeaux

If you can possibly … and Calibre will let you do this … find the book summary and put it somewhere in the metadata or in the front of the ebook. I have SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO many books and I can’t remember why I wanted to read them, and having the book summary handy is lovely. I put the book summary in the front of every one of my ebooks and make the app open the book to that page instead of Chapter 1.

              • Mojeaux

I spend a lot of time tagging and metadata-ing the ebooks I buy/download, like it’s my music library or not. I have a file naming convention and everything. LOL

Calibre will let you do all of that, I believe. I don’t use Calibre but once in a blue moon, but since I make ebooks for a living, I have my software and process.

              • rhywun

                Good tip, thx

              • Pat

Why the hell am I carrying these around?!

In the back of a spare bedroom closet I found my old 400-capacity DVD case. All but 4 pages full with various store-bought and home-ripped movies and TV series. Sold it for 15 bucks to some very nice old gentleman who still uses DVDs.

          • Pat

Can you still sideload your own files onto those things? If so, I’d just buy the books from the Amazon store if you want to support the author, kill the wifi on the device, and then use libgen to obtain DRM-free copies and store them locally. Fuck every single bit and byte of DRM.

            • Mojeaux

Can you still sideload your own files onto those things?

              On which things?

If so, I’d just buy the books from the Amazon store if you want to support the author, kill the wifi on the device, and then use libgen to obtain DRM-free copies and store them locally.

This is what I’d do if I can find what I want on LibGen. If not … I have a way to download the Kindle files onto my hard drive, but that is because I have an old Kindle keyboard without 2/3G that I never disabled. It’s long dead, but I keep it active so Amazon will let me download my files. The idea is that because I didn’t have wireless on that device, I had to sideload them and to sideload them, I have to be able to download them. So now I download all my Kindle files and break them later if I have to. I just want them on my hard drive for future reference.

Unrelated, I have found that Google Play Books is the best epub reader for Android that I can find. I put all my books into Dropbox and download them onto my phone when I want to read a book.

iBooks on iPad is okay. I guess. I’m not really a fan. I use Google Play Books for that, too. The only really good reader for everything went bye bye long ago and I’ve never found anything to match.

              • Pat

                On which things?

Newer Kindles. I wasn’t sure if they still let you sideload files to the device without some kind of workaround like the one you described.

Unrelated, I have found that Google Play Books is the best epub reader for Android that I can find.

I do all my reading on my laptop or an old Pinebook I still have kicking around. Calibre is fantastic, but way more than I really need, so I use Foliate. Bookworm and Koodo Reader are also very good though. On my phone I have Librera FD, but I’ve only ever opened epub books on it just to see if it works. I mostly use it as a PDF viewer.

              • Mojeaux

If you can stick a USB cord in it, yes, you can sideload.

I don’t like Bookworm or Librera for different reasons. I don’t believe I’ve tried Koodo.

    • Chafed

      Congratulations on your new home.

“Omar, the World’s Greatest Lover” should be a Glibs handle.

An old friend of my dad’s used to always joke that his ex-wife, who was, shall we say, Tres-approved, got her outfits from Omar the Tentmaker.

  7. Ted S.

Keefe Brasselle directed? MGM tried to make a star of him in the early 50s, obviously not successfully. The guy had all the charisma of Joe Biden.

He did the Eddie Cantor story, as Eddie. He would be Ultra MAGA banned today.

      Adult Wednesday Addams?

      (can’t do YT)

      • Derpetologist

A young woman made some videos while dressed, acting, and speaking as Wednesday Addams. The videos were funny. She stopped making them because she was threatened with a copyright lawsuit.

        • LCDR_Fish

Think I downloaded most of S1 a few years back.

It’s a balmy 98 degrees. I grilled BBQ chicken outside, now posting at a table under the Magnolia tree. Nice out.

    • Plinker762

Did you grill it on the sidewalk?

      • R.J.

Haha. I used the grill. My big tomcat came out, he was laying in the tall grass. Under 100 here in summer feels good to us.

        • Plinker762

I was down in Flagstaff last week, it was cooler than Spokane. I guess being at 9000′ elevation helped.

          • Pat

I didn’t realize we had any Spokanites. I grew up there.

            • Plinker762

              There are at least three.

              • Pat

<– Clueless as usual. I can't imagine ever having a reason to go back there, but if I do, I'll have to keep that in mind. It's definitely not the same town in which I grew up anymore.

              • The Bearded Hobbit

Any word from Sodium? I haven’t seen her post here since our visit in Idaho. I guess I scared her off.

        • The Gunslinger

I’ve been watching The Abandoned Resort on “Off The Ranch” YouTube channel. Matt, from Demolition Ranch, bought the Guadalupe river ranch resort and is trying to bring it back. The ranch is 300+ acres near Boerne Texas and on tonight’s video his stretch of river is dry. He said he’s never seen that.

          • DrOtto

That can change in a week. I’ve got a friend with a home near Boerne on the Guadalupe and we went tubing one year, ’16 or ’17 – I think, and there were picnic tables 20 feet up in the trees that got placed there from flooding.

        • DrOtto

Yeah, I’m nearer Austin and went to the post office after sundown last week and it felt good enough to turn the AC off and get some “cool fresh air”. It was still 91 out.

    • rhywun

It was so hot inside today that every time I enter the kitchen (where I don’t have any AC) I have to OCD the stove-top knobs to make sure nothing is on. That oven air appears to be blowing in from the window that I left cracked open.

  10. LCDR_Fish

UCS – I finally bit the bullet and ordered the 9th Edition Recruit Pack off Amazon (nice price). After watching a few more Poorhammer vids – especially this one this week (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7casmuiNoPM) and the one they did a few months ago comparing Combat patrol packs. Then I went to GW to order the Necron CP – and it’s not even in stock (or listed on the site at all) – are these coming out at different schedules? Looks like I also missed the first printing of the updated SE Codex too – but I expect that’ll be relisted pretty soon.

Don’t have space for anything yet…but it’s a good motivator for me to get my place cleaned/organized better to free up enough space to work on it.

    • UnCivilServant

They shifted a lot of their production capacity to Leviathan boxes, so for other boxes they’re a bit under-stocked until they can catch up. So, yes, some of the combat patrols will be missing.

I would see if there are local game stores nearby and check their stock. Sometimes you’ll find things that are either not availabile or are piced lower than GW retail.

Did you see the freehand painting I did yesterday? I need more practice.

      • LCDR_Fish

There is one store I may drive past this weekend – may stop in. Just seemed weird to me because they list 21 combat patrols on the official store right now – including several that are out of stock, but the necron one doesn’t show up at all.

        • UnCivilServant

It’s also possible that they’re reworking that box for better profits for 10th.

I have shedloads of necrons still on the sprue. I should probably convince myself to part with a few.

            • UnCivilServant

From that video “The new kit isn’t out yet” Which would explain why GW doesn’t have it listed. I mean that’s only a month ago when they put the video up.

              • LCDR_Fish

You’re right. They had a similarly titled vid 3 months ago I was thinking of too – either way…I had assumed everything was coming out around the same time as the 10th Ed codex at the beginning of the month.

              • UnCivilServant

GW likes to space out releases so that it’s not competing with itself. It should be released by the end of the year since they’ve already shown off the contents.

              • LCDR_Fish

Good to know. May stop by the store and see if they can do special orders/requests – may as well make some local connections now.

  12. Derpetologist

The finale of the much-overlooked Samson and Delilah film fits well this this song.

    • Pat

Whoa, Pillar. That takes me back to my church youth group days.

  13. UnCivilServant

I got replacement chicken, and it just came out of the air fryer. It is indeed cripy, but the time spent cooking made the spice rub too dark on some of the pieces and now the house is a bit smoky.

    Still tasty though.

    • Common Tater

      Replacement chicken?

      • UnCivilServant

There was an unfortunate incident when I went to cook earlier today. The original chicken was no longer fit to be food.

        • Common Tater

OK, glad it worked out eventually.

          • UnCivilServant

I do have to figure out how to not risk burning the spice blend.

            • Common Tater

              Shove it under the skin?

              • UnCivilServant

That sounds like a lot of work.

              • Common Tater

Never tried with wings, but it’s a good technique for thighs, leg quarters, and breast on the bone.

    • rhywun

I’m looking at grill/air fryer/oven combos and got so overwhelmed by the variety that I gave up and ordered a simple toaster for now, because I can’t live without that.

      • UnCivilServant

That was one thing that delayed my purchase for so long.

But today’s dinner convinced me it was worth it to finally commit to one. It was the best chicken I’ve had in a long time.

      • Common Tater

I’ve thought about getting one, but already have a regular oven and toaster oven, and don’t have much room. The kitchen is smaller than the dining room.

        • UnCivilServant

I didn’t have a toaster oven, so there’s a wider niche (and more kitchen space) for this box to fill.

        • rhywun

I’m moving soon and want to take the opportunity to refresh my collection of old kitchen gadgets.

My toaster oven is seriously a POS. It doesn’t even cook toast evenly.
I have this panini press thing that sprays fat and oil everywhere, so I want an indoor grill type thing to cook burgers on.

          • Chafed

Getting an airfryee/toaster oven has changed my life. I make a bunch of different dishes that just weren’t worth the effort before.

            • rhywun

How’s the cleanup? I’m also getting a dishwasher for the first time and wonder if it’s as easy-breezy as they say for these gadgets.

              • Chafed

It’s simple. I handwash the basket or rack. Less frequently I wash the drip pan beneath it.

Dishwashers are a wonderful labor saving device. Incredibly simple to use.

              • rhywun

Heh I know how to use a dishwasher.

I was wondering if you can throw the air fryer parts in there.

              • UnCivilServant

                Mine were all aluminum.

The fry grate proper (that the food sat on to cook) tore up a brand new sponge something fierce when I washed it, so a dishwasher might be a better option for that.

              • UnCivilServant

Correction – the fry grate and its wires were probably steel.

In looking for this on Tubi, I found they have I Dismember Mama.

In searching for that, I came across an interesting sounding documentary called Don’t Think I’ve Forgotten: Cambodia’s Lost Rock and Roll. Fuck the Khmer Rouge and every other commie out there.

    • R.J.

      Yep. I hate them.

    • Derpetologist

I taught English in Chicago to a woman who escaped the Khmer Rouge with her brother. She could understand OK, but had trouble reading it. She was ethnic Chinese and spoke Teochew as her 1st language. She took me to a great Chinese restaurant; that is, the kind that actual Chinese people eat at.

Once I asked her what Cambodians say instead of “Jesus Christ!” or “Oh my god!”. She said they say sister-fucker, brother-fucker, father-fucker…at that point I said “OK, I get the idea.”

Her family owned a jewelry business which got stolen by the communists after the revolution. She and her brother hid the jungle in Thailand til they got refugee status in the US.

Khmer Rouge means red (communist) Cambodians in French. When she said Khmer, it sounded like kuh-MY-eh.

An OT JFC… the mayor of Baltimore has secret ex(?)-gangbangers on the payroll for the express purpose of not reporting crime to the few cops left who haven’t flown the coop yet. It doesn’t seem to be working.

    • Pat

Meantime, Safe Streets, Scott’s flagship violence-reduction initiative, has also proved a failure. The program hires ex-convicts and supposedly reformed gang members as “violence interrupters” to mediate conflicts between neighborhood gang members, drug dealers, and other violent criminals. Baltimore spent $5 million on Safe Streets last year, and another $21 million is on the way. But Scott has kept secret the details of the program’s policies, operations, and finances. For more than a year, his office has refused to explain how the program works or where the money goes. Disturbingly, Scott hides the identities of Safe Streets workers from the public. The mayor has also channeled millions in taxpayer dollars to nonprofits that manage Safe Street operations and put the workers on their payrolls. Scott then claims that the workers are not city employees, using this ruse to continue concealing their names.

      Sounds legit…

Utterly unrelated, but I ran across this re-release of an old ’90s shoegaze demo cassette from an outfit called Ozean that I thought you might like. It’s like if Chapterhouse and MBV had a lovechild.

Re: Movies you can’t make today – One word – Bullshit. You could make them all, yes some idiots are going to piss and moan, but if done well they’ll still make bank. Take the one that almost everyone say can’t be made “Blazing Saddles” look up “x” watches Blazing Saddles for the first time, everyone loves it, to a person, You people give the ‘hecklers veto’ (that may not be the right term but you know what I mean) far to much credit. People still like funny and will up with put much racism or sexism or whatever-ism.

    • MikeS

Perfect Hype. Could Mel Brooks get Warner Brothers to make Blazing Saddles today? Fuck no.

Sure, anyone can “make a movie”. And you’d obviously get an audience. But getting access to top tier actors and support staff and distribution is the thing that won’t happen.

      • The Hyperbole

My bad I didn’t realize that “You can’t make that movie today” didn’t mean ‘you can’t make that movie today’ it meant ‘you can’t make that movie today under these very specific conditions’. Fuck sake.

        • The Hyperbole

Also, and I could very well be wrong but my assumption is that you can’t make a ‘Blazing Saddle’ type movie nowadays is because “racism” but as my one black friend blacksplained to me once the reason Black people love “Blazing Saddles” is because Mel Brooks is making fun of the white people who think that black people would be offended by it.

        • Brochettaward

This is exactly the bullshit I called him out for the other day. When defeated and backed into a corner, he latches onto some semantic difference that he thinks will give him an out.

    • kinnath

but if done well they’ll still make bank.

      1) They won’t be made well

      2) They will fail miserably because they aren’t made well

    • Pat

Perhaps more accurately, you could make pretty much any of those movies, just not with any money or resources from the studio system, and you probably wouldn’t be able to obtain any distribution either. Self-publishing a self-financed film in 2023 is the modern equivalent of selling Betamax copies out of the trunk of your car.

    • Mojeaux

Movies you can’t make today – One word – Bullshit.

None of those movies would get greenlit. They’d stay in preproduction hell forever, if the scripts even got optioned to begin with.

If you mean, you know, any ol’ person could physically make the movie, well, then, maybe. Possibly. With an iPhone and some basic equipment. And money. Lots of money. And connections. Don’t forget those. Put the film on a thumb drive or SD card and hand them out on the sly like little tabs of LSD.

Pssst. Hey buddy. Wanna see a Forbidden Film? Five bucks.

Sure. You could make them. Yep. Absolutely. 🙄

      • The Hyperbole

Still calling BS, there are edgy, racial and sexual themed show all around, Marty and Rich, Archer, the new Justified City Primeval ( which if you aren’t watching why not? it’s fucking awesome) other cartoons and movies I don’t know the names of because I don’t’ even have a TV, I think you people like playing the victim in the culture wars a tad too much.

        • MikeS

          Tell it to Mel Brooks

But never Blazing Saddles, because we have become stupidly politically correct, which is the death of comedy. It’s okay not to hurt feelings of various tribes and groups. However, it’s not good for comedy. Comedy has to walk a thin line, take risks. Comedy is the lecherous little elf whispering into the king’s ear, always telling the truth about human behavior.

          • The Hyperbole

Okay. Hey, Mel, your wrong. Do a Blazing saddles reboot/sequel/reimagining it’ll be bank. if you still got the chops that is. Or if your not dead, Is Mel Brooks dead?

Fuck all you tired old culture warriors! Hollywood is absolutely no different today than it was 30 years ago!

              • The Hyperbole

              • Brochettaward

The only thing that matters is that someone could go shoot a movie like that on their cellphone. Not whether anyone would ever actually get a chance to see it.

              • MikeS

I think you people like playing the victim in the culture wars a tad too much.

Yeah, I put up the strawman.

              • Brochettaward

We live in a world where white people get fired for quoting lap lyrics if they say the wrong words.

The guy talking about how Blazing Saddles was meant to mock white people getting offended on behalf of blacks is lost on Hype. It’s the white progressive who largely makes it impossible to make this movie nowadays.

What is Hype even arguing at this point? I doubt even he knows. We’ve gotten several different (contradictory) defenses of his original objection.

              • Brochettaward

there are edgy, racial and sexual themed show all around

Let’s play the Hype game. Name them. Please, name all of these shows that deal with race relations in anything approaching an “edgy” manner.

You can’t approach these subjects unless its done from one direction and we all do know it to include Hype.

          • Pat

To the point, you can only really do “edgy” type of comedy now if it’s so bludgeoningly self-ware or ironic that it saps every ounce of humor from it. Like Get Out, or Archer, for example. They might as well pop up a crawler like the South Park “THIS IS WHAT SCIENTOLOGISTS ACTUALLY BELIEVE” episode in over-explaining to us why the things being parodied are just so awful.

            • Stinky Wizzleteats

“Taco Bell hours” == gives me a map.

As much as I hate it from a privacy standpoint, I’ve made extensive use of Street View during my property search since I’m out of state. I didn’t realize Apple did street view as well. Bing doesn’t have any data for my location – cheapskates. If I could get tipped off when they’re coming by I’d just go hang out a Nazi flag so they blur it out on their own.

              • rhywun

Yeah, I did notice that Bing only hits a selection of streets. It was fucking with my head until I figured that out.

            • Rat on a train

I notice Google automatically blurs license plates. I don’t see any blurred houses on my street but all the cars parked outside have blurred plates.

      That’s hi praise

  27. Common Tater

OK, Tubi worked and no adds, but ublock blocked a ton of shit. I don’t think I’ve seen that much from one webpage. 713 items. I wouldn’t recommend Tubi without a condom.

    Thanks, RJ 🙂

        Hell, Lumbergh fucked her.

  28. Ownbestenemy

    And….flight delayed. Damn FAA

    • Chafed

It’s long past time to cut it loose from FedGov.

      • Ownbestenemy

Tangential…this is airline issues. Bar is open for another hour in Vegas….

    • Lackadaisical

I was just talking about this yesterday. Air travel is totally effed. No bad weather as far as I can tell and every single flight form Boston to Tampa was getting delayed or cancelled.

      WTF is going on?

      • Grosspatzer

Some pretty intense storms here late last night, probably shut down LGA for a few hours. That might have a ripple effect.

      • Rat on a train

ATC held boarding of my flight at LAX for 45 minutes due to severe weather forecast for NoVA. It put our estimated landing after the end of the weather alert.

        • Ownbestenemy

ATV doesn’t hold boarding. So if airline told you that, they lied.

          • Rat on a train

Editing error. I recall the quote was “boarding will be delayed because ATC has put a hold on our flight due to severe weather”.

          • Gustave Lytton

Maybe not directly, but once they board, DOT’s tarmac delay clock starts ticking for the airline even if it’s a ground delay.

  29. Gustave Lytton

Colorado is leaving. Don’t let the door hit you on the way out. Maybe you can take Utah and the Arizona schools too.

An actual good ruling out of California. You can’t take people’s stuff without a warrant.

    • Sean

      Uh huh…sure. IT’S STILL CALIFORNIA. 🙄

      • Lackadaisical

I didn’t say I was about to move there.

    • Gender Traitor

Good morning, Sean, U, Lack, Ted’S., Mr. Nerfherder, ‘patzie, and OBE (if you’re still awaiting takeoff)!

Today could be nuts. I think we may FINALLY have restored everyone’s access to the timekeeping system, but I’ll probably be fielding questions all day from supervisors who can’t figure out what to do about the missing hours. And we’re supposed to slap mailing labels and postage on a 680-piece mailing senior management wanted out the door by today, but the senior manager who was going to get the mail merge generating the labels was nowhere to be seen all day yesterday. And I still have to finish the Board minutes, ideally before ANOTHER meeting scheduled for Tuesday which I actually have to attend.

      😕

      • Grosspatzer

Mornin’, GT. Sounds like you have a really bad URI, complete with high fever. You should take the day off.

        • Gender Traitor

          Cough cough!!

      • UnCivilServant

So… What are they going to do about the missing hours? Does anyone have edit rights to fix the timecards?

        • Gender Traitor

Oh, yes – Supervisors can edit their subordinates’ timesheets, either entering the times in and out or just plugging in a total number of hours for the day. Even so, I fully expect any number of them to contact me asking either how to do it or what to put.

And I should probably make sure they all know/notice that even though the timekeeping site company didn’t take down the site until last Saturday to address the potential security risk, all times in and out from last Friday disappeared and that day’s data will need to be re-entered.

          • UnCivilServant

            They’re going to love that.

            • Gender Traitor

Almost as much as their subordinates will love being shorted those hours if the supervisors approve the timesheets with their usual level [read “lack”] of diligence.

    • Grosspatzer

Philly really has gone off the rails.

Thank goodness Shark Week is almost over. Longest week of the year.

    • Stinky Wizzleteats

Probably just busy and distracted and didn’t realize what he was doing/where his hand was.

      • Lackadaisical

That is what I want to believe too. It looks…. very unfortunate, but I am going to see it as an accident without other corroborating info. Also possibly doctored? It is weirdly grainy.

    • Fatty Bolger

Bet you anything it’s been edited to make it look bad. I don’t trust any of these without verification any more. Even that Jeff Sessions shooing off Biden video was altered, and essentially fake.

  32. Grosspatzer

    Mornin’, reprobates.

I need a vacation. I did not realize that today was Friday, not Thursday, so I messaged a support tech in Tel-Aviv for help with a production issue. He said he was “in transit” and provided a suggestion without mentioning that it was his weekend. Probably cursing under his breath.

    • Gender Traitor

He was probably on his way to shul, you goy! 😉

    Refund granted…not going to Kentucky

Nope nope…why they didn’t just cancel I have no clue except they were hoping a thunderstorm rolled through to claim not their fault.

    • Gender Traitor

Well, phooey! I’m sorry, OBE! 😞

    • Gustave Lytton

On the plus side, you avoided flying Spirit.
