GlibFlick: Choose your Rockabilly Hell

Haha! I had to post this image. It’s like discussing pineapple on pizza. Tonight’s pick your poison has nothing to do with Rush.

I have had a lot of good conversations with you all the past few months.Β  A lot of interesting concepts came out of it. One that really interested me was the concept of a This or That post.Β  So, here is the first attempt.

CHOOSE YOUR FATE

I will add some kind of vote link if I can figure it out.Β  I understand there is a way to do voting in WordPress.

Update: I was going to use Survey Monkey.Β  Survey Monkey has privacy issues.Β  Also the block for surveys in WordPress requires more funding.Β  I decided we could just discuss in comments.Β Β

Tonight, you may choose your Rockabilly Hell.Β  I have two movies with short descriptions. You can pick which movie you want. If you have nothing at all happening in your life, you may watch both. To keep myself from leaning one way or the other, I used the ratings and descriptions from IMDB.

Ghostroads: A Japanese Rock N Roll Ghost Story:Β  This movie ranked 7.4 out of 10 on IMDB.Β  It is from 2017. Mind you, it had 78 ratings.Β  That could all be friends, fans and family. The description: “The Screamin’ Telstars are a Japanese retro-rock band fronted by Tony on lead vocals and lead guitar. They have been struggling and playing together for years but have never met with any real commercial success. One day, Tony’s amp burns up and he goes to buy a new one at a guitar shop with a curious owner. Tony winds up with an amp with a history. From the amp emerges a ghost who promises Tony fame and immortality in return for a favor: getting rid of his band forever. ” This is a movie for a Japanese audience, which means subtitles. I will say the first featured review was much lower than 7.4 out of 10.

Rockabilly Vampire:Β  This movie is from 1996.Β  It rates a 3.9 out of 10 on IMDB, with 226 scores.Β  The featured review was much higher than that.Β  It could be the victim of a review gang-up.Β  The description: “A woman obsessed with Elvis Presley is having problems with her job, her landlord and her landlord’s scummy son. One day she meets a man who looks and dresses just like Elvis. She immediately falls in love, but there’s one thing she doesn’t realize–‘Elvis’ is a vampire.” This is brought to us by Troma studios, which usually means movies with low production values but enthusiastic actors. Also, it’s in English, with no subtitles.

Okay, what’s it going to be?Β  Ghostroads: A Japanese Rock and Roll Story, or Rockabilly Vampire? Or nothing at all?Β  Because everything is voluntary.Β  Cast your vote in the comments.

Japanese rockabilly…. I know an Asian guy in the Philly area who is a Swing dancer and sometimes plays with a Rockabilly band.

I have to finish up some stuff for work, so no subtitles tonight.

  3. DEG

At least I’m getting a Bob’s Discount Furniture ad instead of a Nikki Haley ad.

    Two votes for Troma.

I hate rockabilly but ESPN was just (like 20 minutes ago) removed from my cable provider so I guess no more US Open or the college football that pre-empted it tonight for me.

      • rhywun

        Mercy!

        • Chafed

Why did I hear that in George Takei’s voice?

          • rhywun

            Oh my!

No, I hear it in my head in a suthen female voice.

      • Common Tater

Sounds like it could be good.

“40 years ago, I played in a one-hit wonder late 1970’s LA Punk band [The Rotters]. I had a dream. We were a lightning smash success within a few months and on radio stations and charts all over America and Europe. One night, my band played at a new club in Hollywood called Madame Wong’s [West]. We all were expecting a packed crowd of 300+. My band opened. When we hit the stage, we were dumb-founded to see a crowd of only eight people. Eight! We played a flat and disappointing set. After us, the next band played in front of the same eight people… that band was f**ing awesome. They were electric and exciting. Their power made the small crowd (including me) go simply crazy. After the show, I asked them how they did it. My band was flat “because” of the disappointing size of the crowd; their band was explosive. The guitarist said to me, “it doesn’t matter, if there’s three people in the crowd or three hundred peopleβ€”we always kick a**!” They did indeed. That was 1979. His name was Greg Ginn. The band? Maybe you’ve heard of them! Their name was Black Flag. The point of it all? It doesn’t matter, if there is only one person who sees what you do or 10,000 people, do it for yourself and build a legend. It doesn’t matter now what other people think. It only matters what you think. Remember: it is better to have Punked and lost, than to have never Punked at all! James Dean said, “dream as if you’ll live forever. Live as if you’ll die today.” I am glad I did play in my band. I am glad I made this movie. I hope you get a laugh. I hope you get a dream.”

      Well! A vote for Ghostroads.

I saw Savoy Brown in concert on a Super Bowl Sunday. There were eight people in the audience (counting me and the Mrs.) They kicked ass and I got Kim Simmonds’ autograph on a couple of CDs.

I played 20 mins of Starfield see my 100% review! So far my face hasn’t melted nor has the game CTD.

I’m not sure what to make of “Rockabilly Vampire”.

      Still watching it.

All done. Nice car at the end.

On the bright side, I was in a weekly meeting with boss-boss today and he had some afters following the usual agenda. “All employees except remote Rhywun and OtherCoworker are required to appear in the office at least twice a week”.

It’s the first clue I’ve had in two months that my request to go remote was (apparently?) approved. Nobody would tell me. Been waiting with anxiety the whole time. It was supposed to take effect Sep. 1 so I guess I’ll check again tomorrow.

    • slumbrew

      • Chafed

That is exactly the right response given Rhywun’s employer.

          LOL.

Speaking of, huge decline in the number of Jewy days off this year. Must be some weird alignment with the days of the week. Like, we had half of last September or October off – this year, nothin’.

Sorry my friend. Rosh Hashanah falls on a September weekend this year.

Rumor has it MikeS was all in tonight but turned to stone as soon as he saw the photo at the top of the page.

    • R.J.

I put a link to Geddy’s greatest screeches there too.

      • rhywun

LOL. I have no dog in this fight. I am a fan, if not a superfan. I have a very slight preference for his later, less shrill phase BUT… the songwriting declined the lower his voice got. I guess mid-period, balanced Rush is my favorite.

    • Brochettaward

MikeS is too busy seconding into his hand to post tonight.

      • Brochettaward

Firster’s First through the hand and inseminate the world. Seconds just get a mess of goo on themselves.

        • MikeS

So…your sexual fantasies are me spooging all over myself? I mean, I guess that’s a compliment of sorts, but damn, dude.

*long string of profanity edited out for brevity*

Apparently the simpletons at Bethesda won’t let you attempt to run Starfield if your GPU does not exactly match an undefined set of parameters. They say a 1080 can run it, and a 2070 but won’t let me try on a 2060.

Let me try, don’t make me have to break your code.

    • UnCivilServant

I have an order for a 4080 Ti waiting for me to go pick up tomorrow when the brick and mortar reopens. Delivery was sunday at the earliest.

    • rhywun

My wishlist says “RELEASE DATE: SEP 5, 2023”.

I wouldn’t even try to download the f’in thing before then.

      • UnCivilServant

I paid for the premium edition and the five days early access

        • rhywun

I prolly won’t even buy it. It’s not my usual bag – I’ve bought a couple Bethesdas and not played them enough to make it worth it. Not again.

IF I buy it will be years from now.

    • Ownbestenemy

      On a 1060…running just fine

      • UnCivilServant

So how do I convince it to try my 2060?

        • Ownbestenemy

Assume you did put it on am SSD?

            • UnCivilServant

There may be a windows update that would fix the issue.

              I’ll try that.

    • MikeS

      lol. wut?

              https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patriot_(TV_series)

The best, incomplete show I have seen. Breaking Bad good, but abandoned after 2 seasons (new Amazon boss arrived and it was the baby of the old boss…)

              Still worth watching.

              • Chafed

Thanks. No can do though. I won’t pay for Amazon Prime. F*ck those guys.

              • MikeS

Serious question; why the Amazon Prime hate? Because the owner is a super villain, or something else?

                /Prime member

              • rhywun

Me, I don’t do Prime because the only benefit that seems valuable to me, the free shipping, is easy to work around.

              • MikeS

I get that. It’s a pretty big deal in Fly-over. I mean, I hate giving that modern-day super-villain money. But damn…he provides a valuable and welcome service.

              • Mojeaux

Yet again I find MikeS to be correct.

                The end is nigh.

              • MikeS

                😘

              • Chafed

No, I don’t hate Bezos but I do hate how much data they collect.

My real beef is paying them creates an incentive to always order from Amazon. I don’t want that incentive. My soon to be ex wife used to order from them all time. It was not unusual to have one or more packages arrive every day. Did we really need all that stuff? No but it was cheap and the shipping was free.

I also don’t like what they done to businesses that sell on their platform. Amazon would collect sales data, turn out a competitive version, and undercut the business. That’s a tad monopolistic for my taste.

              • Gustave Lytton

The Chinese knockoff/scam listings and inventory integrity adulteration, and the lack of any concrete action to fix either one, is hurting their brand immensely. Also, chopping off the long tail that made them valuable in the first place.

        • MikeS

Sorry. No 3C. I do have some R8s I don’t use. Speaking of collets, I’m just a couple ER32s short of a full set. And, I gotta doublecheck, but I think my ER16 set is missing the 1/4″.

          (How’d we do?)

Frankie has a vagina. Frankie was named Frank when we thought he/she was a boy.

Frankie just caught a mouse and brought it inside.

Frankie is a mouser! This is good news!

    /Frankie is a kitten.

    • kinnath

      Great CD

      • MikeS

        Agree

Not snark: I’m surprised you’d call it a “CD” and not an “album”. They’re albums to me, and you have a couple years on me.

        • kinnath

          Well, I have the CD.

I get tired of having young people give me the look when I say album.

And, CD is two characters while album is five.

          • rhywun

I’m with Mikes. “Album” is a generic term with no implication of medium. To me, anyway.

If I meant “record” I would say “record”.

            • kinnath

A record is a 45 rpm disk with one song per side.

An album is a 33 1/3 rpm Long Play (LP) disk with 22 minutes of fun on each side. Thus, an album is synonymous with an LP.

          • MikeS

I’ve been resolute in my insistence on calling them albums (even though I grew up with “tapes”). It’s my hill.

            • kinnath

I got lazy tonight. So shoot me.

        MikeS is correct.

    • rhywun

      LOL.

I’m moving from soda territory back to my native pop territory. It is such a relief. I have felt like such a fraud for the last 25 years.

      • MikeS

It’s crazy, but I can feel the weight lifting off your shoulders. I hope we meet one day so I can buy you a pop. As _od intended. St. Peter be damned.

        • rhywun

I am a little anxious in that it might be right on the dividing line. But I’ll take the win.

          • MikeS

Watched the 2-part premier of Archer. The new character is incredibly annoying.

Please tell me they’re not going to shit all over this final season by sticking with this shit character…

That aside, I did laugh out loud a couple times, which is good (Krieger is the best).

    • Chafed

Let us know how it goes. I gave up after the space season. It just wasn’t funny. I really used to like that show.

      • rhywun

The first few seasons are classic. I want the thing to end so I can start looking for box set bargains.

      • slumbrew

It’s been uneven since then, but some gems in there.

Tonight, Kreiger talking about a skeleton they found: β€œwell, it’s not one of mine – it’s got the quote normal unquote number of heads and look at those hands! Not even one poison sac!”

  16. cyto

    Time for some advice.

I have two 31cc two stroke string trimmers from Home Depot. A Bolens and maybe a Ryobi? They are basically the same thing, just a few years apart. Both have suffered from the florida humidity. Both had their fuel lines disintegrate. That’s why I bought the second one. At the time a new fuel line kit was about $19 and the new trimmer was on sale for about $35, so screw it, gimme the new trimmer.

Now the fuel kits are just a couple of bucks, so I grabbed one to fix the Bolens. Sitting around since last year has not been good for it. After replacing the lines, the fuel filter broke (brittle plastic) and it started leaking. The starter rewind is getting stuck… so I can’t even start the thing until I fix the leak and get inside the starter to see if I can fix that.

    Soooo….

Since the wife has decided that she wants everything nicely edged (St Augustine grass), I am considering getting an electric. Between getting the fuel mix right (or fouling a plug) and the cheap rubber fuel lines, I’m kinda thinking the electric is going to be more friendly. but I never had an electric.

The name brand stuff starts out looking pretty cheap with 18v rechargeable systems at about $80 and up. I noticed that they have 40 and 80 volt systems for a flat fortune…. so I bopped over to Harbor Freight.

They have this 80 volt (!) trimmer for only $80!!

    https://www.harborfreight.com/lawn-garden/outdoor-power-tools/trimmers/80v-brushless-cordless-16-in-string-trimmer-tool-only-56939.html

Never heard of Atlas… but Eighty bucks?!?

    Oh…. “tool only”.

Huh. 80 volt 2.5ah battery is $150. wow. They are proud of that battery.

Charger is another fifty. $90 if you want the fast charger.

So…. $200 for a battery and charger and another 80 for the trimmer. $280.

A similar system in 40 volts would run $90 for the battery, $50 for the charger and $60 for the tool. So $200.

running back over to Lowes website, they actually have their cheap brand in a comparable bundle for $170

    https://www.lowes.com/pd/Kobalt-40-volt-15-in-Straight-Cordless-String-Trimmer-4-Ah-Battery-and-Charger-Included/5005554727

Now, I don’t think Kobalt has that great of a reputation – but it does come with a 5 year warranty (3 on the battery)

Atlas comes with a 90 day warranty.

Harbor freight is new to me. Never been in one. But YouTube gives me the impression that you can get serviceably good stuff for relatively cheap, sometimes.

So… any suggestions on a string trimmer? It mostly will have edging duty, but also some relatively heavy Ferns that take over the shaded area of my lawn and can’t really be reached with the mower (too steep and right into a canal).

    • Sean

You do your own yard work? CHUMP.

      • cyto

I used to love it. I had over an acre in the Atlanta area, and had a big 56″ riding mower. Big garden, lots of flowers. Really fun to take care of.

Moving to Florida I have 8,000 square feet. That’s the lot size. They do square feet, not acres. Mostly house and driveway. 3/4 of the yard is steep hill down to the canal. I took care of it for the first 1.5 years, getting it in sterling condition. Then I found out that it was only $25 a month to get a lawn service down here.

So they did it for about a decade. Then the guy ghosted me. Don’t know if he got arrested or what.

Nobody wanted to do it after that – the hill requires them to use string trimmers if you are a pro. They wanted $75 each time they came.

So… back to doing it myself.

    • cyto

A different search reveals that I can order up Worx for $180, Huskvarna for $250 or a Black and Decker trimmer and blower for $170 (but with a half size 2ah 40v battery)

      Now I’m even more confused.

    • Chafed

Your yard size a difficulty of the trim should be a factor. The electric trimmers pretty quickly go through their charge. Obviously battery size matters. I suspect a gas trimmer will be more useful and less expensive. Enjoy them while you can.

      /Californian

      • kinnath

I have a DeWalt cordless. The battery last a pretty long time. I did try to buy a spare one time, but the second battery was about 50% of the original cost.

I rarely have trouble where I can’t get the job done on a single charge, and I have a lot of yard.

I replaced the string spool with a three-blade attachment that can cut heavy weeds and small saplings without problems.

        • UnCivilServant

What do the blades do to walls if you need to get plants growing at the base of a building?

          • MikeS

The blades I’ve seen are plastic.

            • MikeS

I bet an enterprising guy could even 3D print them.

            • UnCivilServant

Plastic can still damage other materials.

              • MikeS

What is the base of your building made out of that plastic trimmer blades will cause noticeable damage? Do you live in a gingerbread house?

              • UnCivilServant

I just love having the paint stripped off the foundation.

              • MikeS

Well. There’s not a powered string trimmer out there that won’t damage paint.

              • UnCivilServant

More seriously, there are wooden buildings or outbuildings, and I don’t intend to always be in this house.

So I’m curious about the effect.

They are all the same; if you run it up against the building, it will cause damage. String or blade. The trick is to get close enough to hit the plant, but not the building…which is easier with the blades, since they are always the same length . The strings get shorter and shorter until you “hit” more out, and then they are longer.

You know, when I first strung the printer, I was trying to recall what the filament reminded me of.

It was edge trimmer string. Speaking of, I need to do something about my lack of edge trimmer string (I ran out last time I cut the grass)

              • MikeS

So you’ve been messing with me this entire time.

              • UnCivilServant

                Of course I have.

I’m waiting for a windows update.

              • MikeS

                Noted

        • MikeS

Yeah, the regular price on the batteries is kinda nuts. But if you keep your eye out for sales -especially around Christmas- it can take some of the sting out of it.

      • cyto

It looks like Home Depot has the 20v Dewalt (5ah battery) on sale for $220, or a 60v for the low, low price of $300.

Now, how the heck do I compare those apples and oranges?

        • MikeS

How much trimming do yo have to do? “Typical” city lot, or a farmstead, or…?

I’m guessing the 20v will do you well (and fit on dozens of other tools)

          • Timeloose

I have a B&D 40V trimmer, blower, and hedge trimmers. They work great. I can trim my 150X 50’ yard and blow it cleanwithout recharging. My battery is now 5 years old and is at about 50% and I need a replacement. The replacement is 50% of what I paid for the entire combo (100$).

    • Robonerfherder

Just pony up the money for the Stihl (gas or battery) and be satisfied with your decision.

I think horror may have a strong argument for being the wokest of movie genres. At least the modern trash that gets made.

Watching season 5 of a show called Slasher that’s on Shudder. It is set Jack the Ripper’s London. Think of the most ridiculous casting choices you could make for that setting (black detective with dreadlocks) to cringy out of place piece of dialogue (female widow to black detective – don’t you dare assume you have more mettle than me). There is always a gay relationship at the center of each season. This one features a tranny! The killer is a character dressed as a widow who does karate and uses Japanese knots because the people who make this shit think that after 5 seasons subverting the audience’s expectations of what a slasher series villain should be is somehow exciting. Well, I guess besides the first season…that one was just straight-up delusional white guy with small penis who couldn’t please a women he was obsessed with.

The writing would be shit without all of the attempts to shoehorn in every modern political message.

Yet I watch…because as great a Firster as I am, I remain a basic bitch when it comes to the horror genre. And almost universally everything produced within it is garbage.

    • Robonerfherder

Why do you subsidize that shit by watching it?

  18. CPRM

This movie ranked 7.4 out of 10 on IMDB. It is from 2017. Mind you, it had 78 ratings

Hell, 78 views on one of my videos is something I wasn’t able to wrangle until I started feeding you aspies videos. Now I can get all the way up to 79! (Out of those views far less comments much less ratings)

      B.A.D. did not age well.

      • Sean

The original song I had lined up was a bit moodier, and I went for something lighter.

    Mornin’ all!
Today, we’re visiting one of OMWC’s much-liked bands, Jethro Tull. From what started out as an Ian Anderson solo album, thus A, we have first a video from the excellent Slipstream DVD now packaged with the latest release of A, Black Sunday..
Then, minus the quirky but fun video, Flyingdale Flyer.

I highly recommend the Slipstream DVD. It’s an interesting mix of story telling and concert video. Tull always puts on a great show and the A concert remains one of my favorite memories.

    • Gender Traitor

Hey there, Beau! Whaddaya know? And good morning, Sean!

      • Beau Knott

Mornin’ GT! How’s your day starting out?
And good morning to you as well Sean!

        • Gender Traitor

So far so good, thanks! Greeted, as usual, by two needy cats, but currently being left alone. Good coffee, email notification that yes, I got paid today. (I suppose I should check the account online just to be sure.) I need to cover a few tasks for Reliable Coworker, who took today off, and do some month-end stuff, but with any luck, nothing too hateful. How ’bout you?

          • Beau Knott

            So far so good πŸ˜‰
Gotta make a trip to the post office, which means wrestling with an increasingly recalcitrant car. Sigh. Saving up to fix one problem, another shows up πŸ™

    • Gustave Lytton

Hey, a new glib πŸ˜‰. Fuck off, tulpa!

Good morning all! I’m gonna have a cup of coffee and go back to nap. Maybe snark a little first Off hours project work is done.

      • Gender Traitor

Good morning, GL! Coffee, then back to sleep? Does coffee have a delayed reaction for you? I sometimes think that’s what happens to me – an afternoon dose of caffeine doesn’t help my P.M. sleepies, but then I can’t get to sleep at bedtime.

        • Gustave Lytton

Caffeine doesn’t seem to affect my sleeping all that much. Overthinking/worrying/anxiety is usually the cause when I can’t sleep. I probably shouldn’t, but I like the taste of coffee and I drink it later in the day just because. Cup now is similar, nice to sip on while hanging out on a conference call letting others do the actual change work.

          • Grosspatzer

“hanging out on a conference call letting others do the actual change work.”

I’m usually on the other end of that and happy to be there. Biggest career mistake I ever made was accepting a position that involved administration and people management. Never again.

            • rhywun

Heh. I’m holding fast on that one. I don’t envision them paying me enough to put up with that crap.

            • Toxteth O'Grady

Yeah, I would be bad at that.

Was Beau Shirley once, or a relation?

              • Grosspatzer

Like Lou Reed, i support the right of consenting adults to be transformers if they so choose. Rock on, Shirley Beau!

              • Beau Knott

Yup, still me. Just getting the ‘nym in line with my actual gender/sex.
                Shirley/he grated…

            • Gustave Lytton

Yeah, no not a people manager. Usually a doer too but this one was moral support in case something went sideways.

    • Grosspatzer

Mornin, to all you wonderful reprobates in glibville. And thanks for the Tull, good waking up material.

      • Gender Traitor

Good morning, ‘patzie! Better today than yesterday, I hope?

        • Grosspatzer

I don’t think it could possibly be worse. Morphine and Hydrocodone had very little effect, I would not wish that on anyone, with the possible exception of Anthony Fauci.

          • R.J.

Terrible. Still I think wish you a better morning.

            • Grosspatzer

              Thaks. So far so good…
