The End

Tonio will be proud. I only saved this post four times when editing. I guarantee he will look up here and read this because I used a picture of naked Burt.

The End

So here it is Monday already, I’m catching up on comments and reading about ferret legging, then I realized I have yet to turn in the weekly movie post. Argh!ย  So it’s time to throw a movie grenade and hope for the best.ย  No time to bask in the joy of last weeks’ anniversary. I’ve got to hustle.

Thankfully, Burt Reynolds rescued me this week.ย  So where did Burt go once Smokey and the Bandit was done?ย  He filmed a movie about trying to kill himself. Wendell Sonny Lawson (Burt Reynolds) is told by his doctor that he has less than one year to live – and enlists a mental patient to kill him. I loved this film first time I saw it.ย  I still love it. Burt loved it so much, he directed it.

Some trivia:ย  The script was written for Woody Allen.ย  That would have been a waste.ย  Burt Reynolds and his usual party crew pulled this off beautifully.

Some of you may have seen this a long time ago.ย  Some of you may never have seen it.ย  So I am going to spoil nothing. I hope you enjoy this one, it’s rare I play anything this good.ย  Normally I am too busy playing stuff like the list below, which includes some selections for GlibFlick year three:

  • Blood Car: a 1990s shoegaze movie where a boy has a car that runs on blood and two girlfriends, one that eats meat and parties and another that’s a vegetarian. Hilarity ensues!
  • The Seventh Curse: Another one of those holy-cow-this-isn’t-happening Chinese wizard films.
  • Choose Your Rockabilly Hell: Ghostroads or Rockabilly Vampire: You get to vote for your choice.
  • Forbidden Adventures: Yeah Baby!ย  Another late-1960s blue film.
  • Spellcaster:ย  Adam Ant rocks out with his wand out.
  • Super Hot:ย  Budding lesbian fights vampires.
  • Night Feeder: Punk Rock meets eyeball eating madman.
  • Heavy Trip: Death Metal band crosses country in a stolen van with a corpse to make it big on TV.

So watch!ย  Or don’t!ย  Everything is voluntary until Dom Deluise chases you with a big kitchen knife!ย  Next week, I will show Choose Your Rockabilly Hell, if I can get a vote meter up and running by then.

    This is a weird cast…

    • R.J.

      Itโ€™s the Burt Reynold regulars.

      • Common Tater

        Myrna Loy and Kristy McNichol?

          • cyto

Ok, if you are of a very specific gen X age, Kristy McNichol was all that and a bag o’ chips.

            • MikeS

              fuckin-a

            • rhywun

Her and Jimmy were the seventies version of “famous for being famous”.

              • Chafed

                Exactly.

              • MikeS

Jimmy for sure, but Kristy has two Emmys. And a couple more each of Emmy and Golden Globe nominations. She was legit in the late 70’s early 80s.

            • Chafed

I know you are right but Young Chafed never understood the love for her. She was somewhat attractive but that’s about it.

              • MikeS
              • Chafed

I just assume she is in a long term lesbian relationship.

              • MikeS

                She is.

And that has no bearing on how she looked to 13 year old MikeS and cyto.

              • Chafed

No, it doesn’t. It was just a current year intuition.

              • cyto

That exactly encapsulates why she was “it” for a very, very small window of GenX.

You had to be just the right age when she was playing these tween/teen characters. It was a lot more than “she is pretty”. She played a vulnerability that spoke to you at a very specific point in your life.

Similar – Janet Jackson on Good Times was a similar situation. She played a sweet little girl who was exactly my age who was abused. This pushed the sympathy button hard.

I’m not the most regular of posters anyway, so i don’t know if any noticed, but I’ve been out. I had spine surgery ten days ago and finally came home today. Recovery will be longer but I’m glad to be out of there. As Evan says, Evan upwards!

When I’m feeling better I can write a thing about the miracles and depravity of specialty surgery in a major metro area. Truly some amazing people and some… not so much.

    • Ownbestenemy

Glad to hear on the mend and for better days.

    • Sean

Hope you have a speedy recovery.

    • Ted S.

    • DEG

    • Lachowsky

godspeed in your recovery. spine surgery sounds scary to me.

    • Gender Traitor

I hope you’re not in too much pain. As it happens, I just learned this evening that my sister got home from the hospital today two days after back surgery (got in relatively quickly after surgery recommended due to a cancellation) – says she had a disc that was not (just?) herniated but broken. Mentioned that she’d been in extreme pain upon awakening from the anesthetic. ๐Ÿ˜Ÿ

      • Common Tater

        Yikes!

    • rhywun

      ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

      Welcome back!

    • MikeS

      Excelsior!

    • Gustave Lytton

Good to see your return! May your recovery be short and full.

    • cyto

Praying for you….. .Spinal surgery is a beee-atch!

I used to work across the hall from a lab that did research on spinal implants. They had a room full of pig spines mounted to rigs that moved them around to test the stability of various implants and methods of attachment. It was pretty much a horror show, particularly when I was working alone at 3 in the morning and the only sounds were the spine machines moving around, lit only by the status lights on various machines, and the sounds of old men moaning in pain in the VA hospital that was connected via my hallway.

Every now and again a metal rod would snap after repeated flexing and send a loud noise forth into the night. Really startling in the quiet of a grad-school all-nighter.

      • rhywun

        Good lord that’s creepy.

I had an 11-day hospital stay a few years ago and it wasn’t so bad – except for the various old patients screaming in pain every couple nights from one room or another nearby. That was rough.

        • Common Tater

          Stupid fucking war on drugs.

    • Fourscore

Get well ASAP and pay attention to the advice of the doctors and therapists. Remember though, it hurts you more than them. Glad you’re back.

    • KSuellington

Get better, hope your recovery is quick and you are feeling better than ever before long.

  6. The Late P Brooks

I think the only Burt Reynolds movie I ever liked was Hooper.

    • Ted S.

      You didn’t like Deliverance?

    • The Hyperbole

It’s been forever since I watched it but I always thought Sharkey’s Machine was a decent flick.

      • The Hyperbole

And The Longest Yard wasn’t half bad.

        • Chafed

That was a great 70s movie.

      • Common Tater

I never saw the movie, but I saw the band open for GG Allin.

    • MikeS

You don’t like Smokey and the Bandit? The fuck?!

I mean, sure, there’s always one. I just assumed it wouldn’t be a Glib. Or if it was it would be Hyperbole.

      • The Hyperbole

I assumed SatB was a given. But it’s a Jackie Gleason vehicle, Burt is a supporting actor even if he got top billing.

        • MikeS

Fair enough. Speaking of Jackie, I wish like hell they’d put out an undubbed version.

        • Common Tater

          Oh, you.

          • The Hyperbole

Reading the wiki on SatB and apparently they wanted Richard Boone for Buford T Justice, I love me some ‘Have Gun will Travel’ but that would have been a disaster.

            • cyto

The guy from the Roger Moore bond flicks would have been better than Boone.

        • Mojeaux

          Not wrong.

      • Mojeaux

Smokey and the Bandit is my pick-me-up movie.

      • rhywun

        That and WTF, Boogie Nights.

        • DEG

          “Boogie Nights” was good.

          • rhywun

            Supposedly, Burt hated it.

      • MikeS

I watched that a bunch of times on HBO as a kid. Fast forward to my 30’s and I find it in the Walmart cheap DVD bin. I ran home in excitement to watch one of my favorite movies. I was very disappointed. Maybe my expectations were too high.

        • cyto

“These Bleeds? These Rose Bleeds here??”

Nah…. that was great. It is of an era, that’s for sure. But exactly what it pretended to be.

          • MikeS

Yeah, I don’t know what exactly I was expecting, but it wasn’t it. I still have the DVD. I’ll give it another go one day.

    • KSuellington

What?! No love for White Lightning or Gator?

      • Chafed

The opening scene in Gator was great.

    • DrOtto

      White Lightening? Gator?

  7. Sean

    I vaguely recall this movie.

  8. DEG

I’m waiting for “I’m afraid I can’t do that Dave”.

  9. Ted S.

Currently on Tubi I’m watching Jack Hawkins in Gideon’s Day (aka Gideon of Scotland Yard).

Jack Hawkins was such an underrated actor.

    • Gustave Lytton

He’s best known to American audiences for supporting roles, I think.

      • dbleagle

See him in “The Cruel Sea”. It is considered one of the best and most realistic naval warfare movies. He and the entire cast were fantastic.

  10. DEG

    Another fucking Nikki Haley ad

    • Ted S.

  11. DEG

  12. The Bearded Hobbit

Way back in 2003, My great uncle on my mom’s side of the family died. The guy’s name was Buck Metts. He was my mom’s favorite uncle, so we all loaded up and drove to Florida for the funeral. i was 16 at the time. Buck played running back for Florida State in the mid fifties. To my surprise, I got to briefly meet both Lee Corso and Burt Reynolds. They both played with my uncle.

My older brother shook Burt’s hand and said, “Nice to meet you Turd Ferguson.”

    • UnCivilServant

You can’t stop an anecdote there – at least tell people what the reaction was.

    I am so there.

    • R.J.

Yeah. That movie is something else. I donโ€™t even know how to properly describe it.

      • Ted S.

I think I mentioned it over the weekend and you might not have seen it, but The Apple (1980) is on Tubi.

  18. rhywun

I used a picture of naked Burt.

    Now I want a cigarette.

    • cyto

That isn’t A picture…. that is THE picture, the centerfold from Playgirl magazine. Remember when they pretended that it was for the ladies?

      • Mojeaux

        I believe it was Cosmopolitan.

        • The Bearded Hobbit

I thought that it was Playgirl. It was used to try to project their magazine to mainstream, ala Playboy.

          • The Bearded Hobbit

            Mojeaux:

You are correct. My memory is faulty.

            • cyto

huh…. it seems that this Cosmo centerfold actually launched Playgirl magazine, and Burt graced the cover. I could not confirm if this photo or some other (or none) appeared in playgirl..

      • rhywun

Yeah, that pic is almost as iconic as the Farah pic that everybody knows.

  19. Mojeaux

I’ll admit it. I love that picture.

    • cyto

It really underlines the differences in taste over the years. 70s was Burt, Mark Spitz…. hairy, manly men. Nowadays chest hair isn’t really the sex symbol it once was.

  20. DEG

Time to go. I’ll finish this tomorrow. Thanks RJ!

  21. UnCivilServant

The downside of a resin printer is that I can’t see if I made a mistake until after several hours of printing.

The print plate is still down in the vat and the mix up of earlier today is still fresh in my mind.

    Please be good.

    • UnCivilServant

Hrmm… I’m supposed to get my retro pay soon and there’s this silly bonus that should never have been in the contract, but if they’re throwing money at me, maybe I should get a filament printer too for things that don’t need the high detail.

I need more table space, but I’m tempted.

      • MikeS

        Do it!

        • UnCivilServant

Got any recommendations for a “Please don’t make me put this thing together myself (and preferrably auto-levelling)” printer?

          • MikeS

I got an AnyCubic Vyper. I like it. Price was right. Self leveling. There was some assembly requiredโ„ข but nothing you can’t easily handle.

              • cyto

                What, you want everything?

              • MikeS

                You’re too demanding. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Yes, I’ve made a number of very good prints with it and Cura. And I’ve really haven’t dove into it as far as tweaking settings and such. It was very plug-and-play. It seems to be a very capable printer. And my understanding is it has a very good feature set for the price. The auto-level is super.

              • UnCivilServant

                ๐Ÿ‘

There are a number of things I’ve seen (mostly terrain) where I took one look at it and went “That would be too heavy in resin”, and if I don’t need the extra-high detail, a filament printer makes sense for them. Plus, given the mechanics of action, it’s less expensive to get a larger print area for filament than resin so it lends itself to bigger things.

                At least that’s my understanding.

              • UnCivilServant

Another one of those questions – how do I get cura to make supports that are not as massive or more massive than the print itself?

              • MikeS

Is resin always solid? Filament is basically never solid unless your making something that needs to be for strength.

              • UnCivilServant

No, resin is not always solid. Though depending on the slicer, the tools to automatically do the hollowing are a paid feature.

I just found the control to look at individual layers in Cura, it still looks like getting the supports of would be a pain, despite their hollowness

              • MikeS

I’ve resolutely avoided prints that require supports, so I’m not the best guy to ask. On the few that required it I played with overhang angle, IIRC. It’s been a while

              • MikeS

The times I did use supports, they weren’t that hard to remove. They weren’t solidly part of the print.

              • UnCivilServant

I’ll have to run some tests.

The piece I’m currently looking at has an estimated print time of… 25 hours 17 minutes… ๐Ÿ˜ฒ

              • UnCivilServant

It’s a house I’m thinking of using as part of a diarama. It was logistically impossible to print in resin, so 25-27 hours isn’t unreasonable.

              • MikeS

Wow! Yeah, you need a filament printer.

              • MikeS

Email me the .stl and I’ll see what Cura says for my Vyper.

              • UnCivilServant

Turning the resolution down sped things up.

Cura had defaulted to “Fine” which got the 25 hour time. “Normal” drops to 13hr 45m

              • MikeS

Ah yes. And for that house…I wonder if “draft” or even lower would even be good enough. It seems like it’s adobe or similar? As long as the print layers weren’t obvious, some roughness may be desirable?

              • UnCivilServant

It will require some testing. there’s a freestanding wall from the same set that should be faster to use as a test piece to see if a low res print preset would work.

              • UnCivilServant

Yes, that wall estimates 90 minutes even at “Fine” down to 16 minutes for “Extra Coarse”. Should be ideal for dialing in the best print settings for the larger building.

For giggles I clicked on CNN.com to see the headlines.

15 consecutive articles about Trump getting his mugshot in Atlanta. 15.

They went with the obviously carefully selected “Trump Surrenders” headline, a word that was repeated many times in the headlines about the day’s events.

Also interestingly, the one article they interrupted this masturbatory indulgence for was to talk about Putin and Prigozhin. They lean into conspiracy theories about people associated with Putin getting killed. Kinda ironic, given their penchant for pointing out that such speculation is “Conspiracy theories” offered without any evidence in similar circumstances.

    • rhywun

Opinion: Heโ€™s been booked. His mug shot has been taken. And incredibly this might not end Donald Trumpโ€™s race for the White House

      LOL

Giggles indeed. So supercereal over there.

      • KSuellington

Iโ€™m wondering if this might be the point too far that theyโ€™ve taken it and now start drawing sympathy for him from independents. As much as I am highly ambivalent about him, all of these indictments have made me much more likely to vote for him. While I know I am not the average voter, there have got to be a fair amount of independent voters that are pissed at the current shitshow. Who knows? I still think he is a very long shot- especially with the incoming fortifications, but Iโ€™d say that they went up a bit with this current circus”

        • rhywun

I think it’s more likely those independents just won’t vote.

          Lowest turnout ever, incoming.

          • cyto

voting is important. luckily there are many independent groups who are well funded for taking ballots door to door to collect those votes.

  27. Mojeaux

I listened to part of a chat Vivek and JBP had, and Vivek was talking about how little Trump spent on air time/ads/whatever, especially as compared to his competition. I’m like, Dude, the man got wall-to-wall breathless outrage publicity from CNN, MSNBC, FOX, and every other penny-ante news outlet. He got BILLIONS in free publicity. Of COURSE he didn’t have to spend any money!

Geez. I don’t know whether Vivek didn’t remember, didn’t think about it, or deliberately overlooked it, but that was terribly short-sighted of him.

    • Chafed

Vivek says whatever he thinks is useful in the moment. Give it a few days and he will say something else entirely.

    • MikeS

My main take-away is; Barbara Streisand recorded a fucking anti-Trump song? Of course she did. Cunt.

AAAAAhhh. I’m so tired of all this shit.

      • MikeS

Also…I honestly thought Johnny Rotten was dead. Like, not of this world, anymore. huh

          Our savior!

        • rhywun

LOL. They are so Gen X.

      • Chafed

I’m going to need to listen to this album. It sounds like he’s still got it. I remember the first time I heard Bodies off of Never Mind The Bollocks. I couldn’t believe The Sex Pistols had an anti-abortion song (that rocks). The more I learned about Rotten/Lydon, the more I realized he was an independent thinker. There is plenty he is wrong about but he sure is interesting.

        • MikeS

          I smell an article!

Trump is already selling merchandise with his mugshot on it.

We truly do live in the stupdiest timeline.

    • Stinky Wizzleteats

The dude uses a golden toilet, of course heโ€™s going to monetize that mugshot which is a good one by the way.

    • cyto

Hahaha…. I gotta admit, the dude has a sense of humor that I never appreciated. I never would have suspected that leaning into the smear campaign was a tactic. It is really strange. Someone is going to earn a PhD describing how this worked for him.

Thinking about it, this actually reminds me a bit of how my daughter dealt with bullies at the end of elementary school going into middle school. She is a bit of a tomboy, so the kids were trying to pick on her by calling her a lesbian. Instead of getting defensive, crying, getting mad and lashing out or any other reaction they wanted, she just leaned into it. “Yup, that’s what I am. That’s all I ever do. I just kiss girls all day. I don’t ever do anything but kiss girls.”

Stuck it right up their butt and that was the end of that.

This is similar. Trump has the facts on his side. There is a long history of outrage that has not been addressed. These folks were spying on his campaign using the government – a move that dwarfs the Nixon break-in at the DNC headquarters at the Watergate hotel. Their control of the media and the government meant that not only did Obama face no consequences for this, they actually used it to impeach Trump as promised.

I don’t know how deep the knowledge of this history is among the unwashed middle who don’t follow politics. The propaganda machine has spent 8 years telling them that he is a Russian plant, that he works with Ukrainians to try to dig up dirt on political opponents and that he sent crowds of white supremacists to attack black civil rights activists and to overthrow the government. Each of those stories is actually the exact opposite of what happened – but would you know that if you don’t really follow politics?

It will be interesting to see how it plays out. I do know that my brother was in the DiSantis camp until the New York indictments came down. Now you couldn’t get him to vote against Trump for love or money. He is personally outraged by this. But he follows politics. He is not the great unwashed middle.

Fusion 360 has a very unintuitive camera interface. I did manage to construct a very simple paint holder inset for some drawers that I’m going to try to print later. It’s part of an organizational project for hobby space.

I am just not a fan of interface conventions. I spent more time fighting the software camera controls than I did actually executing the operations. I figured out the operations for making the solids with no real issue except for selection and that darn camera. (I got better at accomodating the selection mechanics at the later stages.)

The rain is hammering on the windows, but the weather radar is only showing clouds.

      oh well, fridays suck anyway.

      • Sean

Raining pretty loudly here right now too

  30. Shirley Knott

Good morning all. We got our thunderstorms last night, with power outages. Mine bounced 4 times, but then back to steady on.
So, more electronica this morning ๐Ÿ˜‰
First, something fairly gentle from Kraftwerk, Franz Schubert Endless Endless.
Then, from ‘the album that ate the entire advertising budget’, Departure From the Northern Wasteland, we have Michael Hoenig, Sun and Moon.

    • Gender Traitor

Good morning, Shirley, Sean, U, and Roat!

Just working half a day today – leaving at noon to go meet a college friend for lunch not far from my office. She lives in the Twin Cities area, I believe, but visits here regularly to visit her sister and BIL who live in a southern Dayton ‘burb. She always wants to meet me at the same Mid-priced Casual Dining Mexican chain joint. (Maybe influenced by her being a retired Spanish teacher?) I’m getting my face set for something quesadillish and, if I’m feeling daring, a strawberry margarita. ๐Ÿ˜‹๐Ÿน

      • UnCivilServant

Just don’t mix them up and order the Straberrydilla and the queso margarita.

        • Gender Traitor

Luckily, I only plan to order one of each, because that’s probably how I’d order the second ones. ๐Ÿฅด๐Ÿน

Total spending on fuel subsidies topped $7 trillion in 2022, IMF says

But an even bigger concern, the IMF said, are implicit subsidy costs, which are likely to keep rising as damage from a warming planet spreads. Consumers did not pay for over $5 trillion of environmental costs last year, the IMF said.

Remember, when calculating subsidies, include numbers pulled out of your ass.

    ๐Ÿ™

I know this complaint will give fuel to a viscious slander that you lot won’t give up, but these garlic cheese curds have too much garlic. I can’t even taste the cheese. It’s excessive.

    • Gender Traitor

Cheese curds do NOT need garlic unless you’re trying to keep away vampires. ๐Ÿ˜

      • Rat on a train

        You don’t want vampire rats.

        • Gender Traitor

It’s a good thing I have all day to stop thinking of that idea before I go to bed tonight. ๐Ÿ˜ณ

      • UnCivilServant

They were out of regular, and my choices were garlic or buffalo. I had expected a more subdued amount of garlic.

        • Gender Traitor

I would have chosen likewise. They betrayed your trust.

    • Stinky Wizzleteats

Garlic cheese curds this early? Your coworkers are gonna love ya.

      • UnCivilServant

Nobody’s in the office on fridays except me.

    • Not Adahn

Unflavored cheese curds are kind of bland.

      • UnCivilServant

These’s a middle ground between “Cheese-Flavored Cheese” and “Enough Garlic to Kill a Frenchman”

        • Not Adahn

I can’t help but noticed you mentioned a froggie and not an eye-tye or Korean. So you’re saying there could have been more garlic there?

          • UnCivilServant

Yes, there could have been more garlic. I did finish the package.

    • Sean

      Were they properly squeaky?

      • UnCivilServant

They don’t last long enough to warm up to that temperature.

  33. UnCivilServant

    Hrmm…

I would like to point out that the difference in the official vote tallies is only 377,834. So there were more than enough questionable ballots to have swung the election.

Given Kathy’s unpopularity among human voters…

      Howโ€™s the weather?
I am heading to Shreveport, LA tomorrow. Hoping for under 100 degrees.

      • UnCivilServant

I can guarantee that it will be under 100 Degrees… C

      • Tres Cool

        Oh itโ€™s balmy.
Last week I was in the 110 degree Nevada oven.
This week it the Georgia sauna.
