Dr. Jeckyll and Sister Hyde

Dr Jeckyll and Sister Hyde

You’re thinking to yourself – “This is some new trash film R.J. fished up to torture us.”ย  Nope.ย  This is a 1972 Hammer film, which allows me to fulfill two criteria:

  1. Talk about Hammer studios.
  2. Post an obscure Hammer horror film.

I felt that Hammer was perfect the way it was in the 1950s and 60s.ย  You could tell a Hammer film in the first few seconds.ย  The direction, the colors, the sets, even the costumes.ย  Most of this came from the consistency provided by a father and son team, William and Tony Hinds.ย  William started Hammer, and Tony made it famous.ย  William lost Hammer Studios in 1937 to bankruptcy, but it was resurrected by James Carreras, who had better money sense.ย  Tony Hinds came on board as soon as he was of age.ย  Once Tony hit his stride in the 50s, we ended up with a stunning amount of film content.ย  Almost 15 years of great movies (1955-1969).

Nothing lasts forever though. American films were eating the profit margins of Hammer by introducing new, more disturbing content.ย  Tony Hinds was tired.ย  He had personally produced 39 films since the horror fad hit. He retired, and let others take the helm.ย  Experimentation occurred. Screen shocks got more brazen.ย  Nudity in films started.ย  Some of the major players were not happy with this new direction.ย  ย Keep in mind that during the 60’s, Christopher Lee’s Dracula horrified people simply because of the blood and Lee’s horn-dog eyes. Our movie tonight cranks the (British) horror up to 11, with knives jutting out of throats and full-frontal nudity. By 1972, things got so – titillating that some actors wanted little or nothing to do with it.ย  For example, it is said that Christopher Lee was so disgusted by his lines in Dracula A.D. 1972 that he refused to speak them.ย  True?ย  Maybe. 1972 was a weird time. Society was already starting to unravel.

Even with all the nudity and blood, Hammer went down.ย  The Brits just could not compete with the schlock coming out of America, Italy and Germany.ย  Hammer studios closed up in 1979, exactly ten years after Tony Hinds retired. There have been attempts to resurrect the studio.ย  It will never be the same.ย  It’s like when Atari tried to come back as a game company.ย  You cannot recreate it. The original group of people who gave us all those Hammer films in the 50s and 60s are gone. So enjoy what we have!

No doubt you’ve had your fill of my Sugar Free prompted ramblings.ย  Let me talk a little bit about the plot of Dr. Jeckyll and Sister Hyde.ย  A mad doctor finds out he can change his sex by drinking a certain female hormone, harvested from the brain within moments of death. Hilarity ensues!ย  And social commentary, relevant to our modern situation also ensues! And lots of fake blood! And good ol’ British boobies! This movie is the best of the new salacious 1970s Hammer films. It does indeed have nudity.ย  It really wasn’t THAT nude, maybe just British nude.ย  Certainly not Vampire Happening nude. I think overall it is an enjoyable classic, which doesn’t get enough screen time.

So watch!ย  Or don’t!ย  Everything is voluntary! Next week, we start a Thanksgiving countdown with trigger warnings galore!ย  Thankskilling!ย  The movie so bad it couldn’t die!

Play that funky First right now

You don’t have to play it until you die. I think Wild Cherry got a little carried away there.

Well, they were wild, after all. It is no surprise they went the whole hog.

        • R.J.

          BY WHOLE HOG MEAN…
          LONG PIG

          • Zwak says the real is not governable, but self-governing.

And how do you get long pig?

            Same way you get ants!

Bury a person up to their neck and cover the head with honey?

Do you know what your problem is, RJ?

              • R.J.

I have many problems. Of which one do you speak?

              • Brochettaward

YOU’VE BEEN THE SUGAR BUSINESS FOR SO LONG, YOU’VE FORGETTEN THE TASTE OF REAL HONEY!

I swear I have admired your stick to it attitude. Brevity might be a concept you need to study.

On the hunt for a smaller, more portable Getac PC for all the travel next year. The mighty Getac S400 is like carrying a full weight set in my backpack.
Next year I have the GlibCruise, and at least one more Glib event, hoping for Honey Harvest. Plus all the usual smaller three-day jaunts. The amusement factor of letting somebody carry my backpack with eight pounds of PC in it is wearing off.

  3. DEG

    And good olโ€™ British boobies!

I’m assuming you are aware “busty brits” is a porn site.
I didn’t know until I Iooked it up.
Have to admit that my tastes center on that small island.

That’s exactly the site I referenced.

          And, I didn’t know.

Relax, watch some light British smut. Snark. I may have an old fashioned.

Thanks ๐Ÿ™‚ I’m drinking bacardi and grapefruit.

If anyone is bothering to watch the barn burner between the Steelers and Titans, Steelers defense was just flagged 6 times on the Titans opening drive.

Titans gained like 10 yards on their own. Free FG. Why would anyone watch this crap?

    • R.J.

The baseball game last night wore me out + three Halloween parties and the usual 60 hour work week. I am just going to sit here and snark.

      • The Gunslinger

I watched highlights this morning of the baseball game. 6 no-hit innings by the Arizona pitcher and then 3 straight hits to start the 7th gives the Rangers the lead. And Arizona was threatening every inning but couldn’t push a run across. Crazy game. Congratulations to your Rangers. I’m glad to see them win one.

        • R.J.

I was watching from the second inning. It was so tense. Both teams pitchers were magnificent. No way I could have hit one of those pitches even in my heyday. You could see the tension in everybody’s face around the sixth inning. Then you had that bad error for the Diamondbacks which cost them the game. Man! It’s never that exciting when I go in person.

        • creech

I see that the Phillies’ “can’t get a hit with runners in scoring position” disease must have been catching and incubating in the Diamondback’s lineup.

  6. DEG

I’m actually diving in now… wow… I like the way the opening credits look.

    • R.J.

The Dr. Jeckyll is such a twat.

    • R.J.

What’s the bet, Glibs and Glibbettes? How much time does he really get? Sentencing in a long, long way away. He may not even make it.

      • Chafed

He will get decades. He might get the whole thing, see Bernie Madoff. My guess is he gets 50+ years.

    • milo

He will not serve a day. He is of the body.

            Hoo boy…

            • Chafed

              He is guilty as sin.

              • slumbrew

                Yep yep yep.

The bits of the defense I’ve seen are laughable.

            • rhywun

Note to self: if youโ€™re going to write code to do fraud, make it messy and unreadable to reduce the chances itโ€™s later put in front of a jury as evidence.

              LOL

OT – The grow lamp apparently doesn’t have a stand because some psycho decided it would be cheaper to “design” it to be shoved into the soil, yet the bottom section does not feel strong enough for that, and I didn’t want to endanger the planet by plunging some chinese crap into the peat.

So I drew up a stand and am printing it. I’m testing out a new filament material (PETG) to see how it works out.

    • R.J.

I would have made a stand of wood and old bolts. Yours sounds more interesting.

      • UnCivilServant

I have a 3d printer, and no place to do woodworking.

        ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

        You use what you have.

        • milo

You have a place. You just have to clear everything out of it.

            • Common Tater

You can become a minimalist like Moby.

            • milo

Not being silly. There are areas in your home that do not mean more to you than what you are wanting to do.
              Clean them out.
Store the items contained therein. They can be restored to where they are now.
              No harm. No foul.

              • UnCivilServant

                You are being silly.

I do not want to do woodworking.

Besides, there’s nowhere to put any of it. If there were available storage, my stuff would be in it.

              • milo

Oh…I see. The woodworking reply was to someone else. My mistake.
It is very difficult to speak in a very precise way on a chat board.
I know I have fallen prey to it,
                Apologies.

    That was pretty good.

Weird. I thought those things are for spray and pray.

I’m watching last week’s Real Time. Cuomo is on. I want to punch him through the screen.

That reaction is normal for any Cuomo.

At least I can bring my lavender some fake sunlight today.

      ๐ŸŒž๐ŸŒฑ

      • UnCivilServant

        ๐Ÿ˜ณ

I very nearly lost my lavender seedling.

I had to move the planter because where I had it would put the lamp shining directly into my eyes. But as I moved it, I knocked it over. By grace, the bulk of the peat was lodged firmly into the planter, and this held the seedling, so I was able to scoop the loose pieces up and set them back in place. The plant looks none the worse for wear, and is now getting its full measure of light on a 12-hour rotation.

        • Gender Traitor

Yikes! Hope the plant is fine and thrives!

          • UnCivilServant

            ๐Ÿคž

I’m at the point where any more meddling would do more harm than good. I don’t like ‘wait and see’, but it is the rational choice.

      • Ghostpatzer

Mornin’. Ackshually, there’s a lot to like about NJ, if you ignore the high taxes. And the pollution. And crumbling infrastructure. And corrupt politicians. And Sunday blue laws (A Bergen County exclusive!).

          And the NJ drivers!

    Daily ray of sunshine?

    https://nypost.com/2023/11/01/news/biden-backed-wind-power-company-cancels-new-jersey-projects-despite-1b-in-subsidies/

A green energy company on Tuesday pulled the plug on two wind projects off the coast of New Jersey which were approved for an estimated $1 billion in taxpayer-funded subsidies by Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy and state lawmakers.

The Danish outfit Orsted cited high inflation, rising interest rates and supply chain issues as their reasons for scrapping its Ocean Wind 1 and 2 projects โ€“ both of which were buoyed by tax incentives included in President Bidenโ€™s so-called Inflation Reduction Act.

Unfortunately the trenches for cables in Island Beach State Park have already been dug. Lovely, but nice to see that venue back in the news.

    https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/n-jersey-gov-chris-christie-kicks-sand-after-being-spotted-n779256

    • rhywun

The company said it would be moving forward with its Revolution Wind project in Connecticut and Rhode Island and its South Fork Wind project in New York despite the cancellation of Ocean Wind 1 and 2.

Not if that’s the same company that’s demanding greatly increased rates or else.

I am becoming fairly confident that none of this crap gets off the ground. Especially as the public becomes aware that this will triple or quadruple their energy bills.

      • UnCivilServant

National Grid has stopped trying to sell me a “Green Energy Plan”. I’m still annoyed there was no way to reach back to the originator of those emails and go “I want Nuclear, Hydro, Gas, and Coal, not that unreliable crap.”

And it’s all comingled on the grid anyway, so it’s not like they can guarantee I’d be getting power from the gas-burning backup plant to the useless wind farm instead of from the hydro plant less than a mile from my house.

  15. Not Adahn

Huh. Apparently the time change is an excuse for IT to take things down for… 22.5h?

    • UnCivilServant

We have a change scheduled to adjust the clocks on the mainframes.

Apparently they still can’t handle that automatically.

We do not expect it to take more than an hour for all of them.

    • Rat on a train

They set all the servers to local time? At a previous project whoever setup the database server did that.

      • rhywun

I’ve more or less given up trying to deal with time properly. It’s not critical to my area anyway.

    • Ghostpatzer

Semi-annual time changes breed all kinds of stupidity. I wonder if Amtrak still has trains sit for an hour when the clocks are moved back one hour.

    • UnCivilServant

The only thing I got with my roof was a warranty.

    • Ghostpatzer

Roofs. AR-15. Florida is about to have an increased Korean population.
