Rotoscoped Reeves

A Scanner Darkly

Tonight we have a dazzler of a film based on the famous book by Philip K. Dick (PKD). Get ready to enjoy paranoia, police surveillance, cops within cops and the slow decay of drug use. Hilarity ensues? Yes.  There is some hilarity.  It’s not all grim.

Richard Linklater directed this film. It was a dream of his to do a Philip K. Dick film, he just couldn’t decide which one to do. His original desire was to do Ubik. I find it interesting that Linklater would want to do any PKD books, as PKD went libertarian/anti-commie towards the end and it showed in his books.  Linklater is definitely a leftist Austin-dweller.

Some ideas (like PKD’s) cross over the ideological barrier.  Harry Potter did for a long time, until J.K. Rowling started speaking out.  Pretty sure PKD would have run afoul of leftists too, had he not died of a stroke.

Fun fact: Alex Jones played himself in A Scanner Darkly, as he did in another Linklater film, Waking Life. Does that mean Linklater is a fan?  Apparently not. Odd. Why use him twice then?  Another fun fact, both Waking Life and tonight’s film are rotoscoped.

So watch!  Or don’t!  Everything is voluntary! At least until our shared view of reality starts to dissolve.  Which it has. Things will get crazier than even Philip K. Dick can write about, very soon. Remember, “if you don’t like this world, wait until you see the others (PKD).”  Next week, some over the top mod 60’s spy film fun with 7 Golden Men Strike Again!
