Delta Space Mission

Not only did Romania have a science fiction scene in the 70s and 80s, it had an animated science fiction scene! This is one of two films written and directed by Calin Cazan and Mircea Toia. The other film, The Son of the Stars is still not formally released with subtitles (I did find a copy with You Tube subtitles, watcher beware). Delta Space Mission is hand-drawn and really looks great. I see some rotoscope used here and there for the actors, a strong color palette, and a soundtrack which reminds me of Fantastic Planet. Overall this will be an enjoyable film post!

We are lucky to have a good copy of this. You can imagine the copies of films, cartoons, etc… were not stored particularly well during communism or after the studio went semi-private and barely had any employees. As an added point, I don’t even think Romanians knew much about the films from this time. They were mostly for export to other commie countries. So this might even be a surprise for Pie.

So what is it about? Tonight I turn to jamesrupert2014

The launch of the intergalactic starship ‘Delta’ is disrupted when the highly sophisticated computer A. I. that controls the ship falls in obsessive love with Alma (voiced by Mirela Gorea-Chelaru), a beautiful, green-skinned reporter. Things get more complicated with the giant spherical vessel suddenly disappears and the lovelorn A. I. starts sending out robots to procure the verdant vamp (who is accompanied by ‘Tin’, her two-legged omnivorous space-pet).

Thank you James, wherever you are. Much better summary than IMDB.

Don’t expect deep thoughts and ideas from this, other than a thoroughly modern theme of A.I. gone wild and impinging upon everyone’s freedom. But do enjoy the animated thrill ride. There is definitely padding from animators who wanted to put in silly sequences to get this up to a full-length film. It’s still enjoyable. And you all might be one of the few audiences in the West who know about this film and can say you saw it. Look at you all, flaunting your Glib privilege!

So watch! Or don’t! Everything is voluntary! Next week begins the audience favorites! Do you have anything you wish to see? Post in the comments below! I have previous submissions logged and will start with those.

I don’t normally go for gingers, but I won’t lie, Alma could get it.

    • Chafed

      You’re very generous.

  2. DEG

Alma (voiced by Mirela Gorea-Chelaru), a beautiful, green-skinned reporter.

    Shades of Star Trek?

    Diving in!

    “People for people”

    LOL

The second film I hid in the text of the post is actually better than this one. I really, really liked it. The subtitles were a little uneven. So I decided to go with this one, which is a definitely a cleaned up copy, with proper English subtitles.

    • R.J.

Both of them were made under the yoke of communism. Both of them made extensive use of rotoscoping. It’s interesting to see what they were able to do with what they had. Clearly they didn’t have a whole hell of a lot. When you look at other movies in the 80s, Heavy Metal, I mean Star Wars had come out, all this stuff in the West was coming out. A Renaissance of sci-fi. So these guys wanted to play the same game. But they had jack shit for production values. And they still pulled it off.

  5. DEG

This is kinda weird. I pick up some “Heavy Metal” vibes.

  6. DEG

    Is that a C96 she’s carrying?

  7. Sean

    Ladybugs have been deployed.

    • R.J.

I just saw that! I didn’t notice that during the first watch of this movie.

      • DEG

I thought you guys were talking about Mauser rifles. “I didn’t see any VZ-24s here.” Then I realized I had a brain fart. You were referring to the pistol.

  8. Sean

You know you’re in a nice area when the busboy at the Mexican restaurant is a white boy. 🤣😂

    • rhywun

lol One of the culture shocks in upstate NY was seeing white people doing jobs you don’t see white people doing downstate. Restaurant work, construction, bus and car drivers, etc. Not that it is especially nice here.

      • R.J.

Normal here. Although I was surprised when a white guy seated me at a sushi restaurant recently.
No doubt he was confused by seating a giant Brussels sprout.

      • Pat

was surprised when a white guy seated me at a sushi restaurant recently

        Live footage.

      • Tres Cool

No doubt Im a bigot, but I used to get acupuncture from this guy- https://www.drcschen.com/

Having a recent neck injury and looking for an acupuncturist in the area, they’re all white. I feel like its less effective coming from a non-asian…..

      • Tres Cool

Now that I remember it, I actually took my Great Pyrennes to see Dr Chen when she had AIHA (autoimmune hemolytic anemia) and paid to have acupuncture done to….a doge.

*She was a great dog, but a so-so Pyrennes. Certainly not “Great”.

      • Aloysious

Tres, that prick you are feeling isn’t a needle.

      • Gustave Lytton

Buddy grew up in LA. Car washes here is one he mentioned.

      • Timeloose

I hired two 50 year old white guys to landscape my parents house.

They did a great job. Nearly all work of this type is done by locals.

      • Gustave Lytton

That’s all Latinos here. Same with roofers and janitorial/housekeeping.

    • Spudalicious

It means you’re in a shitty Mexican restaurant.

    • kinnath

We went to a Mexican restaurant in Moscow in 1994 on a business trip. The busboy was clearly hispanic. We guessed that he was probably Cuban or from some Central American client state of Russia.

      • Chafed

I can’t imagine what Russian Mexican food tasted like.

      • kinnath

It’s better for you that way.

      • Evan from Evansville

Why would you have done that? When Usain Bolt was in the Olympics in China, he only ate McDs cuz he trusted it. That at least makes sense. We’re you being escorted by a Mexican cabal doing business in Russia, possibly still connected to the Soviet web they wove?

Yes. (Or you were banging a waitress. Oh… it was the busboy. *taps nose*

      • Rat on a train

I went to an Italian restaurant in the Philippines. I was the only white there. Food was good though. Apparently the owner had worked as a chef in Italy.

  9. R.J.

I do hope that Pie sees this in the morning. We were talking about a year ago, I found another really bizarre, animated sci-fi feature from Romania. He had never seen that either. I have a feeling all of these were lost. Who knows? They were probably only seen by elites in communist nations until recently.

    • Chafed

Pie is elite. He’s the only Romanian Glib.

  10. Pat

The ending was a little abrupt, but Tin is apparently the Romanian space-faring Scooby Doo.

    • R.J.

I would agree with that statement.

      • R.J.

Actually, he’s more of a speed buggy. Remember that one?

      • Pat

        speed buggy

It jogged my memory once I looked it up. Thank you mid ’90s Cartoon Network.

      • R.J.

Having a photographic memory for that sh*t can be painful at times.

      • Tres Cool

I remember the stupid theme song to Speed Buggy.

      • Pat

One of my charges at work is named Daisy, and every time I’m logging her attendance I think of that scene.

  11. R.J.

“ it must be terrible to know you will never be human”
I don’t think that’s gonna work on future AI.

    • R.J.

But the idea is that life in all of its chaos is necessary for advancement is a good one.

  12. R.J.

I am now watching the animated Animal Farm from the 50s with my daughter. Is there any interest in me posting this? Especially since we have a new, skin-suited version out?
If Bobbo is out there I know he is already a “yes.”

    • ron73440

There was a live action one a few years ago that was pretty good also.

I think Kelsey Grammer was one of the voice actors.

      • ron73440

Holy crap, I am old and time flies.

        It was from 1999.

      • R.J.

The 1950s version is definitely available. And it’s great.

      • Evan from Evansville

Oooh! Please tell me that’s good. Pretty good? The cast includes… Kelsey Grammer, Ian Holm, JULIA LOUIS-DRYFUS(!@$!), Patrick Steward, and he in many many things, Pete Postlethwaite.

Elaine was also the ‘female’ lead bug in Bug’s Life. Just visually, she defines My Type. (I also happily accept her incredible talent and billionairess status on the side. Or. Well. Yes.)

Talent wise, she’s fucking goddamn good at her job. I find it amazing that a sinfully hot woman, born into all that wealth, uh. Actually had the audacity to still go out in the first place and actually work, and more importantly, to be that good.

(Also, I’m not convinced comedic timing can be learned. Pretty much like baseball, ya can either throw one or not. *shrug* )

      • Tres Cool

        She’s out of your league:

“Julia Scarlett Elizabeth Louis-Dreyfus was born in New York City on January 13, 1961. Her mother, Judith (née LeFever), is an American writer and special needs educator.[ Her father, Gérard Louis-Dreyfus, was a French billionaire who served as chairman of the Louis Dreyfus Company. Her paternal grandfather, Pierre Louis-Dreyfus, was president of the Louis Dreyfus Group commodities and shipping conglomerate.”

      • Evan from Evansville

I said I’d happily take those things ON THE SIDE! I’m in love with her TALENT! And… HER! I don’t care if she has several children with a dude who IIRC she’s been with for quite quite some time! She made Seinfeld eps while quite pregnant!

…. I really like her. Yeah. Remarkably talented, funny, happens to be ultra wealthy aside from that, and she absolutely defines My Type. She’s the exact sort of tiny I’m into. Cuddly wuddly… *blows kiss*

      • rhywun

I’m reminded of Jessica Pegula who doesn’t have to be world-class tennis player but is.

She isn’t as pretty as Elaine though.

      • Evan from Evansville

Damn. Would serve. Also! “The family has a net worth of over $7.5 billion.[8] She is of part Korean descent as her mother is Korean.” There’s my in, right there. Outta my league? Psh. I *create* leagues we belong together in. *swish*

      • Threedoor

She’s in an episode of It’s Florida Man and it’s funny. She’s perfectly cast.

    • Evan from Evansville

Has anyone seen the new one out of spite?

If a group went, even/ especially(?) if they were the Proggie sort, I could see it being fun. Infuriating, but fun in its own way.

      • Chafed

No fucking way will I spend a penny on that movie. Why would I encourage it?

      • Evan from Evansville

I wouldn’t. If an occasion occurred where my nephews and maybe more were to see it, I’d go. (I wouldn’t have to pay, were such to happen with my family.) In general, it’d be an internally fun MST3K ep. (And notes for later.) But also helps see specifics of how The Cause is being messaged to kids.

I try to pay attention to the enemy’s schemes and machinations. (Eh. That’s kinda true.)

      • Rat on a train

It doesn’t appear many people have seen it not out of spite.

  13. Muzzled Woodchipper

The only bad part about my new job is that the onboarding process has been slow. Not only do I really want to just get started making some money, but I’ve been abstaining from, uh, a vice that rhymes with mead because they drug test via oral swab. I was initially told that I’d hear back and get my drug test within a couple of days, but the guy responsible for that was laid out sick, and my onboarding was delayed. I went back in today in order to get the process moving again (successful), but they’ve taken what should have been a couple of days and turned it into a couple of weeks, and I’m getting irritable. My drug test isn’t still for another 5 days (having abstained for 6 days – an oral swab only detects THC for about 72 hours). Makes me want to choke a bitch.

    • Evan from Evansville

Woah. I’m truly sorry they’re being that actively evil. No snark.

      • rhywun

I don’t even do drugs (presently) and I loathe that shit.

    • Chafed

      Is that you Wayne Brady?

    • Toxteth O'Grady

Whatever happened to the terms orientation and hiring?

  14. PieInTheSky

Yeah I think I saw this as a kid but I am not sure I want to see it again. But maybe I will briefly scroll through the youtube version. The subtitles seem decent on the youtube.

    • PieInTheSky

looks trippy and not necessarily in a good way 🙂

Update on a story I mentioned recently:

New Paltz Town Board decides against selling surplus guns

    Oh, but it’s much worse:

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. — The Town Board voted 4-1 on Wednesday to destroy surplus guns rather than sell them back to town police officers.

At a joint town and village board meeting at New Paltz Village Hall, the board moved to reject a proposed policy that would have established a uniform procedure for disposing of not-needed and surplus firearms and ammunition owned by the town and assigned to the town police department.

The proposed policy would have allowed the town to sell 42 surplus guns back to active town police officers and to destroy nine or 10 shotguns.

Instead, board member Kitty Brown made a motion to reject the proposed policy and not sell the surplus guns, with Supervisor Tim Rogers amending the motion to include that the surplus guns would be destroyed.

Good morning, Sean, homey, Ted’S., and Roat!

      • Gender Traitor

Good morning, U! How are you today?

      • UnCivilServant

        Upset at myself.

I stayed up until 2:30am playing video games, which then caused issues with my norning schedule, since it limited how much sleep I could get and consequently how well I was able to get out the door on time. Resulted in commuting while more people were on the road, which is inherently more stressfull, and I arrived only ten minutes before the start of my workday, rather than a half hour.

      • Gender Traitor

Sounds as if you need a vacation! 😉

      • UnCivilServant

You know what, I think I’ll take next week off. Just not show up to work.

      • Gender Traitor

        That’ll show ’em! 😁

Too local news: 2 hospitalized after being exposed to chemical in YMCA pool area

Now, Ive never owned or maintained a pool. But 12.5% is 120,500 parts per million (ppm). Chlorine has a IDLH (immediately dangerous to life and health) level of 10 ppm.
I thought pools were chlorinated by adding a solid form of it. How are they getting vapor ?

    • Rat on a train

      chloramines?

Chloramines are formed by reaction of chlorine used to disinfect swimming pools with ammonia and urea introduced into the pools by human perspiration, saliva, mucus, urine, and other biologic substances, and by insects and other pests. Chloramines, especially trichloramine, are responsible for most of the “chlorine smell” of pools, as well as for skin, eye, and respiratory irritation.

Good morning sir. Been changing the catbox, putting out the trash. Now I shall sit down to coffee and work that I get paid for.
