The Forward compiled and reviewed video of 10 pageants in the U.S. since 2020 that feature a Jewish character named “zhyd,” “Moshko” or “Chaim,” and sometimes his wife, usually named Sarah. All were posted to social media, in many cases by the churches themselves.
The pageants mix and match a few motifs, all showing these two Jews in a negative light as they try to lure Christians to commit sin. Some tempt the faithful with goods, loans or liquor. Some mock believers for worshipping Christ; curse Christians; summon and collude with the devil, or betray baby Jesus to King Herod, who is seeking to kill him.
Most of the actors playing the zhyd role wore what look to be peyos, the sidelocks traditionally worn by Orthodox Jews. In one instance, the character wore an exaggerated fake nose.
The Forward located photos from an additional eight pageants for which video is not publicly available that show actors with what appear to be peyos or a fake nose.
Those U.S. pageants are part of a global phenomenon, centered in Europe. A Forward review of more than 200 videos of recent verteps internationally associated with the Ukrainian Catholic Church found that when a Jewish character was included, that character in nearly every case was portrayed in a negative light.
The verteps with offensive scenes are almost exclusively performed in the Ukrainian language and have gone largely unnoticed by Jewish organizations in the U.S.

Not surprising. In our town, the brand new 18-unit apartments built for homeless has similar issues, although not as severe. The problem is that the clientele are a mix of mentally unbalanced, drug addicted, and/or incorrigible people.
Glibs might remember that my wife started a non-profit that runs a program for the homeless, where people stay up to a year in one of our units as they get a job (or better job), learn how to interact with a landlord, and hopefully leave the program in a better financial position and with a recommendation from us that leads to more permanent housing. The units have a partial subsidy, paid for by local grants and private donations. We have strict rules for the tenants (no drugs, communicate with your landlord, pay your rent on time, etc.) and if they are not followed we will terminate them from the program (it’s a month-to-month lease). We have about a 50% success rate, as some people appreciate our help and strive to do better, but others are just there for the subsidy and don’t care to do better, or have mental problems that keeps them from succeeding.
You do good work. Respect.
The rage over this in California is white hot. Even some lefties are asking questions about these housing programs.
At least they look better than Cabrini Green, for now.

I work 2nd shift; so I sleep in. Woke up at 10am to the sound of golfball size hail hitting my metal roof. No damage to the car; although my niece who has my other car texted me asking if the insurance covered hail damage, but no details. Just got back from seeing The Odyssey.
It’s okay. Slow and long, which I guess fits. I almost feel like they should have expanded it out to 8 hours and made it an HBO miniseries.
I felt like Eliot Page was miscast because his character is supposed to be a teenage boy, which Page has the body for but not the face.
Also, Tom Holland looks and acts like a teenager, but should be a fully grown man.
Somewhat weird costuming, as you’ve got Agamemnon’s armor which is completely over the top, but then when Menelaus and Telemachus go out hunting together they look like they just pieced together random clothes at a renfair.
One of the defenses of the film I’ve heard is “It’s a myth, it’s fictional, accuracy doesn’t matter!”; but I’m sure many of those same people would complain about anachronisms in Hercules the Legendary Journeys or Xena Warrior Princess.

So far so good. Just got done watching a cute cat video. This morning, I need to take my car in to the dealer for new brakes. Luckily, they promised me a loaner so I don’t have to sit around there for hours.

I may have to recreate the template of interview questions I used last time, since I can’t find it, despite having all of the individualized paperwork for the candidates. I hate recreating work already done, and it’s essentially the same role, so using the old template as a starting point would have saved so much time.
Is any of the completed paperwork in a form you can easily edit, or is it all…on paper?
The completed paperwork has none of what I actually need. Those are all arcane HR forms.
I’m looking for my notes where I wrote down what I want to ask the candidates.

The HR-12 is declination of Interview with reasons which may or may not invalidate you on the eligable list.
The S-1000 is the formal application for the job, only filled out after the interview request.
The “Ten Day Letter” is “We haven’t heard from you, you’ll be invalidated if you don’t respond” It lets us file the HR-12 on behalf of the candidate.
And so on.
