My sister at Harvard spent 80% of her time in some sort of fundraising activity, whether it be grants, convincing hotels to donate a conference room for a few days, etc. 10% of her time was recruiting students and the other 10% was consulting with existing students. And all of her students were practicing physicians whom were expected to suspend patient care for several weeks while they were doing the continuing ed curriculum. (none of whom were surgeons).

Again, that fire hose of cash. And this also allowed for the debasement of high school education, as there was a idea at the back of everyone in EDU’s head that the college for everyone push would cover everything in the end, thus making lower levels superfluous.

From a cursory read of the link – hey, cursory is almost reading – I tend to agree (but could be persuaded otherwise). The state passed the law, agents of the state should abide by it. I’m much less of a federal supremacist. Of course the fly in the ointment is that immigration enforcement is a constitutional authority of the federal government and so the supremacy clause applies. But that doesn’t necessarily mean you should be able to commandeer state resources.
Of course it only ever goes one direction. Were the fed to say, “OK and we’re cutting all federal funding towards law enforcement in your state” some judge would issue a nation wide injunction preventing them from doing that.

Trump shattered ethics norms. Will voters trust Democrats to fix them?
A half-century ago, President Richard Nixon’s resignation in the aftermath of the Watergate scandal shifted how Americans viewed corruption in Washington. Today, as President Trump has shattered norms around public service ethics in ways that have enriched himself and his family, politicians in both parties agree that Nixon-era scandals seem quaint.
“If Watergate happened tomorrow, it would be like a 12-hour news story. The idea that it would have taken down a presidency is crazy,” Vice President Vance said in June at an event at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library.
“Watergate was like a Cub Scout prank compared to what we’re living through,” Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., told NPR in May.
Only people who have devoted their entire lives to public service and are free of the taint of making a living in the private sector can be trusted with the levers of power.
I love how they juxtaposition Vance and Raskin next to a statement, made without evidence, that “resident Trump has shattered norms around public service ethics in ways that have enriched himself and his family, politicians in both parties agree that Nixon-era scandals seem quaint.”
I’m pretty sure the reasons for Vance’s statement had very little to do with the statement you just made, without evidence, but you’ve put them together to suggest a connection.

The outboard horsepower explosion started about 20 years ago, when bigger boats typically had engines set within the hull. The upside was that they could generate more power than an outboard. The downside was that they were hard to service and took up a lot of interior space.

When we visited Belize, the water taxi* we took from the mainland to San Pedro was about that size, powered by three enormous outboards, and it was brutal.
*We ended up on this water taxi out of ignorance. The taxi driver from the airport took us to this water taxi, almost certainly because he was getting a cut for anyone he delivered. The first red flag should have been when they grabbed our luggage right away, before we had even booked fare.
We discovered later that there are much larger, smoother riding and more comfortable water taxis, that sail out of a completely different dock than the cut rate death trap we sailed on that first day.

Idid not walk into Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey intending to pick holes. If there was zero sexual chemistry between Odysseus and Circe, who was I to say that’s not how it went in the poem? I was most likely thinking of a feminist retelling (Madeline Miller’s novel Circe), rather than Homer, anyway.
Nevertheless, even allowing for metaphor and whatnot, even factoring in that Circe’s passion for Odysseus is (almost?) definitely a rumination on the double standards of godliness, in which the guy gods are allowed to sleep with whichever mortals they please, but the lady ones are not supposed to (I don’t think?), I am sure something happened.
Just on the balance of probabilities, I am also sure that something happened with Calypso on the beach; all that elaborate nymph-craft, all that gaslighting and coercive control and anguish-minimisation. Why would she do it if not to keep him for sex? It’s not as though she needed a warrior; she didn’t even need any DIY done.
