Snyder’s 300 was a better movie than Nolan’s Odyssey.
300 at least is honest that it’s just a fictional depiction of a real war.
Odyssey takes a foundational story in the Western tradition and strips it of everything that made it what it was and what inspired people for so long to fill it with a bunch of modern messaging and tropes. It’s based on a “translation” that is more like a fan fic version of The Odyssey made by someone who wasn’t actually a fan of the original at all.
Like various lines from Emily Wilson’s translation completely change the meaning of what’s being said to where you can fairly argue it’s not a translation at all. If Homer or the Greeks passed down a legacy celebrating the glory of the Trojan War (which doesn’t mean they didn’t recognize it’s brutality), and she takes all of that away to just replace it with anti-war nonsense, that fundamentally changes the original story.
Odysseus is a typical male lead in modern Hollywood. He was stripped of everything that made this character great. The character flaws from the original aren’t even present because, well, those aren’t the sort of things modern society cares about. Too much pride and hubris causing problems? I mean, we’re a culture that does nothing but celebrate ourselves! Who could relate to that especially when it’s someone proud of their tactical brilliance and leadership in war?
A lot can be said about that movie Troy from the 2000’s, but at least Achilles was close to the spirit of the original character. It turned the Iliad into a dumb popcorn flick, but it’s something you can mindlessly watch and enjoy. The Odyssey is a joyless trek through the ancient world.
Most morons out there will take the dark, gritty nature of the story and the Hollywood tropes on war that we’ve seen a million times written by people who never actually experienced anything resembling war (don’t even know people who did fight) and take it for depth. It’ll feel important to them despite conveying nothing new and no connection to why this story survived as long as it did.
This really is, from my perspective as a history geek with a particular interest in the ancient world and warfare, the worst shit Hollywood has crapped out yet. A big budget Hollywood movie like this rarely gets made. Nolan is maybe the only guy left who could have gotten it done at all, and this is what we got. Most people will never read anything from Homer beyond middle school where they’ll get snippets because fuck reading the whole crusty old thing that doesn’t appeal to our modern sensibilities.
The history of West in many respects is the history of war. Lowkey warfare shaped the West more than any other part of the world. Martial strength has always been celebrated to some degree. Which isn’t the same as just mindlessly glorifying war. If you want petty acts of brutality, that exists everywhere. If you want systemic violence done right, you need men from the West god damn it!

Do have one more thing to add. Odysseus isn’t quite as pathetic as Oliver Stone’s Alexander, but they’re quite similar in that they had EVERYTHING that made them memorable stripped bear in the attempt to deconstruct them and make them “relatable” to modern audiences.
Like seriously who the fucked could watch his Alexander film and walk away thinking that the guy they just saw on film could have conquered 90% of the known world and be thought of as a god? No one.
My understanding is that her translation was widely considered by academics to be a Feminist retelling which focused on Important Feminist themes rather than accuracy and that this was a Good Thing.
Then with the new movie coming out the Bad Men noticed that it was a feminist retelling, and suddenly the academics said it was a completely accurate translation and you’re a stupid chud who can’t read Ancient Greek so you’re not allowed to claim otherwise.

Honest question. Lots of takes out their, pro and con, but people who haven’t seen the move yet.
I have read both The Odyssey and The Iliad (have both on my book case). I get the question as there are a lot of people beating the drum who couldn’t care less about any of this. The ancient world has always interested me. I’m not an expert, but my hobby for years was designing an overhaul mod for a computer game based on historical accuracy. No, that’s no some attempt at passing a credential, but I actually *am* passionate about this crap. Ancient world and especially ancient warfare interests me quite a bit.
I went to some shitty public university, but even there you had to take Western Tradition courses and there was some exposure to these texts. I know in middle school and elementary I got a little bit of The Odyssey in two different states. It was pretty similar so I’m guessing one school system just covered the content later but who knows.
It bothers me on some level that the martial aspects of the text gets ripped out entirely by these hacks. Really, really bothers me but at the end of the day it’s a product of the larger culture especially the type you see in Hollywood.
Again, difference between glorifying war and recognizing how the people who fight the wars often actually feel about what they did. Shit is usually complicated, but you can’t get a portrayal of modern soldiers that doesn’t revel in the idea that they’re at best broken toys these days. It goes back well before this (already cited Alexander by Oliver Stone – few people bothered to even watch that one I suspect).
It’s hard to really put into words just how influential those texts are. From the literary perspective to just the cultures they shaped. And some Hollywood hack or modern “feminist” think they can do it better.

I plan on seeing it, but I’ve never read either ‘original.’ I know of them through history and pop culture. I know far more about the Romans than the Greeks, but I’m better than the average bear, though not ‘studied.’
