“Sen. Lindsey Graham Dies at 71 From Suspected Aorta Rupture, Preliminary Findings Show”

    Yikes!

    • AlexinCT

      When it is your time…

      • juris imprudent

Graham’s time should’ve been up a couple of decades ago.

My father died from the same thing. Unless your at a hospital when it happens there is little chance of surviving that.

    • EvilSheldon

So I have very little sympathy for the whole ‘Damn those Evil Boomers!!!’ trope.

But when it comes to the workings of government, some kind of mandatory retirement age (and minimum hiring age) seems like an excellent idea.

“71 Year Old Man Dies from Heart Attack” would normally not be national news.

He was one of our leaders man. He was a Top Man! TOP MAN!

The main thing is that we are learning the lesson for the millionth time how sweet the power really is as we watch its wielders die refusing to give it up. Till the bitter end. Turtle Mitch is next.

Evidence mounts of noncitizens reaching voter rolls, casting ballots as DOJ speeds crackdown

How fast did we go from “This is not happening so we need no new regulation to punish and prevent it.” to “This is actually happening, but not a lot, so we can ignore it.” to “OK, so there is a lot of this, but it is not so bad.” already. How soon till we get “This is happening all over the place, and it is good that it is.”?

    • R C Dean

When I was getting my NM driver’s license, I went through the grueling background check process under their motor voter registration.

It was one question on a form: “You’re a US citizen, right?”

      • Ownbestenemy

And if I remember they have an option for 15 year renewal right?

Trying to remember and that was 23 years ago when I got mine.

        Don’t recall, OBE.

My state, as well, had the pinky swear question.

      • DEG

        NH doesn’t do motor voter.

Instead we have same day registration.

The process, for both same day registration and registering beforehand, is a bit more grueling than ‘It was one question on a form: “You’re a US citizen, right?”’. You have to show actual paperwork. In person.

“Fiscal responsibility should rest with the states,” Yee said. “Many of these types of issues really require better transparency and accountability and you don’t have that when you’re in this giant building in Washington, D.C.”

“The states can see what’s happening with their taxpayer dollars and ensure that that accountability and that fiscal management is there in their own individual states,” Yee added.

Then there are the states that would happily continue to fund learing centers ’til the cows come home.

    • R C Dean

The more the states spend, the more federal matching dollars they get.

It’s that simple. Fraud isn’t just allowed, it’s actively incentivized.

Eh. Austin had a thriving and frankly amazing food truck scene until the restaurant owners complained it “wasn’t fair” and got them shut down.

I am still bitter. There were a few that had built up a significant enough following that they were able to transition to brick-and-mortar locations, but my favorite went from a one-dude culinary genius to a “now we need to sell enough to cover this real estate cost, so we’ll need a consistent menu with a supply chain and line cooks and…” It’s not a bad restaurant by any means but it’s not even vaguely the same food.

And then the trailer that made awesome burgers and tenderloin sandwiches and probably the best fries in the city never made a comeback. Nor did the Jamaican trailer parked in front of the head shop.

I’m sure with the surge in housing demand the vacant lots would have eventually been converted to boutique apartments and driven the food trucks out of business, but the hand of the market doesn’t piss me off as much as the hand of Karen.

    • Raven Nation

Yeah: I suspect the better answer here is cut the rules and regulations on everyone.

I don’t think I ever look for a health dept certificate in a restaurant. But if enough Yelp reviews mention lack of cleanliness…

      • UnCivilServant

Given the mismatch I’ve seen between the certificates and teh restaurants, I just assume it validates that the owner paid the bribes.

      • R C Dean

When I go to a restaurant, I look for who’s running the kitchen. Abuela? No worries. Asian tiger mom? You could eat off the floor.

      • Ownbestenemy

If open kitchen, I look at who is cooking. If closed kitchen, I look at food coming out to diners.

Food is one of our last trusts held in society really.

      • DrOtto

This is the way. I don’t look for rankings either as they’re mostly bullshit, but if you continue to make your customers sick, or have la cucaracha running rampant at your site, word gets out.

    • rhywun

Well… I suspect most of these aren’t anything like the “food trucks” you’re thinking of. Rather, they are probably cheap crappy street food. Nothing wrong with that but I won’t touch it.

Yes, cut the rules and regulations. And/or enforce existing immigration law – then most of them go away. But of course that is the last thing elected Dem politicians want.

      • Not Adahn

The ad-hoc food vendor…genre? Can undoubtedly dredge the bottom of El Crapitano. Like the chicks selling grilled cheese sandwiches at jam-band concerts. However, occasionally you find gems there too. One of the circuit rennies would sell the most amazing stuffed French Toast on Monday mornings.

Now I want a carrot juice.

      • rhywun

There was an awesome array of food trucks outside my office building in the Before Times. I wonder if they are still around or if they died out since I moved away, like so much else in the New Reality. Most of them already had brick and mortar elsewhere.

    • EvilSheldon

…the hand of the market doesn’t piss me off as much as the hand of Karen.

That is an excellent line, consider it stolen!

    • Michael Malaise

A municipality outside of Austin (Pflugerville or similar) should welcome food trucks with open arms. Open up a Food Truck Depot and let them park there and sell their cuisine. But that would require a smart approach from someone in government which seems sketchy.

Today, however, is my first day in a big professional, upward swing into escrow processing. Certainly a ‘paperwork & see how the office works’ sort of day, I reckon. Subtracting my ~6mo adventure into phlebotomy, and this is my first day of non make-do work since June, 2023. Take away my pay in Singapore, which may come close, though SG is hella expensive, and this is the most money I’ve ever been paid to work, $5k/yr more than the Peru Tribune.

U.S. inflation “stepped up further this spring”

    Unpossible. Donald Trump fixed inflation.

as ‌the evolving impact of tariffs, energy costs driven higher by conflict in the Middle East, and the booming buildout of artificial intelligence technology boosted price pressures that began building last year, the Federal Reserve said on Friday in a new report to Congress ahead of hearings on ‌monetary policy next week.

Chip Fabs are expensive to scale. More than once in the past there was a boom or bubble, someone scaled to meet the increased demand, when the boom went bust or the bubble burst, they were left with a shitload of debt and not enough sales, so they went bankrupt.

        So manufacturers are cautious.

It is far more effective to build new chip fabs than it is to scale as UCS points out. And it takes time to do those. I know there are a few of those in the pipeline, but the first one is still at least a year away.

    Gun Glibs.

I’m on vacation and on my personal devices. I’m finally going to break down and go through the shitshow that is NJ’s CCW process.

As a NJ resident all my current pistols are full size. I have to fucking qualify on what I carry. So Mr. Moneybags is going to purchase two pistols so I only have to go through this shitshow once.

Much as it pains me to be a Glock fanboy my Model 21 pre boating accident has been flawless. So gun #1 will be a 43X MOS. I’m in Nj so 10 rounds or less is required.

Any suggestions for the other 10 round single stack 9mm carry piece?

Because, naturally, I also need a permit for each pistol acquisition and I want to only go through that hell once as well.

Glibs, come to NJ and enjoy the freedom of CA with much shittier weather and less scenery!

    • Not Adahn

Single stack? That criterion limits things considerably.

I spent some time shooting steel with a Beretta APX carry that was single stack and an excellent shooter.

If you’re willing to go with 1.5/double stack with magazine limiters like we have in NY, the new P10C ported is getting rave reviews. Also kindof pricey, but Langdon Tactical has apparently done some wonderwork on a couple of DA/SA carry pistols specifically the PX4 compact and the P09.

      • Sensei

Thanks. Can it be ordered with the block in place?

I believe I can’t even get the damn thing purchased here without it coming pre neutered.

A ported nine? Is that for deaf people with the wrists of a five-year-old?

      • Not Adahn

        Probably.

        https://gunmagwarehouse.com/cz-p-10-c-p-07-9mm-10-round-magazine.html

The magazine exists on the market. Whether or not there is a specific SKU for gun+10 round mags, I don’t know. I’d look for a local dealer in the brand of firearm you’re checking on. Sometimes here they’ll sell with the factory blocked mags (always with SIGs) other times if there’s a reason they wat to keep the extended basepads on the gun (not a thing with most carry pistols, but it matters for guns with big magwells) the gun store will convert them in house.

      • Not Adahn

A ported nine? Is that for deaf people with the wrists of a five-year-old?

The more fun a gun is to shoot = the more you practice with it = the better you are with it.

      • EvilSheldon

What the rat said. ‘Is it fun to shoot’ is the most important characteristic for a carry gun, behind ‘does it go bang every time?’

      • Sensei

        Beretta APX

That was on the list. Objectively heavier than some other options. Subjectively, some didn’t like the perceived recoil.

What did you think about the recoil? I’m generally not bothered by most 9mm, but don’t have lots of experience with small form factor.

      • Common Tater

Depends why you are carrying it.

      • Not Adahn

I was able to get a unusually good grip on the APX carry — your hands may vary.

When I shot it, I was running the shooting/demo part of Beretta booth. We had “5 to Go” set up (which is terrible from a marketing standpoint, but w/e). I was not able to put up my fastest times with it, but it was up against the 92xi with a dot and the 80x.

    • EvilSheldon

The Glock 43X MOS is an excellent choice. I carry a Glock 48 MOS myself, and I probably would have gone with the 43X instead if it had been a thing when I bought it.

My initial thought is to buy a second identical G43X. Having two identical carry guns just makes your life so much easier – you always have a spare available if your primary gun develops a fault, you can practice and rack up all the wear with the second gun while keeping the first one immaculate, and you don’t have to constantly unload and reload your primary gun when you want to practice with cheap ammo.

If it’s just a matter of having a second gun on your license…maybe think about something really tiny, to carry when you can’t reasonably hide a larger gun? Maybe a .32H&R J-frame revolver, or a Ruger LCP II .22LR?

      • Sensei

        That’s a good thought.

It’s the latter. I need to be licensed for each brand/type.

      • Sensei

Bonus. I’m in NJ ammo is always FMJ!

        Because scary ammunition is bad.

      • Dr Mossy Lawn

        Not quite FMJ only.

It just must not have a hollow tip..

so, Hornady Critical defense or Critical Duty are both valid (there are a couple of others like cor-bon and glasser). I have the critical defense rounds in my carry kit.

There is a State police interpretation letter on this, that they have since removed, but the way-back machine should find it.

      • UnCivilServant

I never got the hollowpoint hate. It’s supposed to dump more energy in your target and not go through as many walls when you miss.

      • Ted S.

Why do we want to save the lives of New Jerseyans?

      • Dr Mossy Lawn

NJ’s hollow point and dum-dum ban goes back to the gangster era when fine upstanding people used FMJ, and only criminals would modify their bullets. Its the same with “slung shot, brass knuckles, dirks, daggers, blackjacks, saps, etc etc.” A litany of what were “sensational weapons” in crime novels. Why ban switchblades?.. because a bunch of teen movies showed them in a bad light.. -BAN-.

Once the designs of hollow points were generally accepted, they exempted themselves, and since nobody could carry, they didn’t care..

Now, its just another thing to make your life hard.

      • DEG

UCS, because the ammunition will expand so much it will put a man sized hole in the target.

See, they know how hollow points actually work.

    • Dr Mossy Lawn

You do not need to qualify with each of your carry guns.. Or legally any of your carry guns. This was changed once the permits were no longer judge issued. (My original permit listed the 2 firearms I qualified with on a judicial limitation).. The Carry permit law has always allowed “all guns”, but the judges would write in limitations.

Now the state police system still asks “please list all of the guns you will carry” on their electronic form. Which has no legal weight, but I’m sure they will have some little hissy fit until Evan Nappen handles your case.

The last time I just qualified with my G22, but I still listed the G22 and G27 on the form.

I just checked the HCQ2 form (the predecessor of the CCARE protocol) and there is no listing of the firearm you qualified with.

I like keeping the feel the same, so since my full size firearms are double stack, I am fine with the G27. Perhaps one day we can go back to the 15 round mags that fell out of the boat in Maryland.

The Five Sisters Trophy Cup was first and last held 50 years ago as a race between the ships of the Gorch Fock class, from NYC to Boston to celebrate the US Bicentennial.

The Gorch Fock class consists of a total of 6 ships, of which 5 were built in the 1930s for the German Kriegsmarine (3 completed and 1 unfinished) and the Romanian navy (1 completed).

All 3 completed German ships were distributed to the Allies as war reparations. They became USCGC Eagle, Sagres of the Portuguese navy and Soviet Tovarishch, formerly Gorch Fock before being scuttled at the end of the war, raised, reactivated and finally retired in 1993 before returning to Stralsund, Germany as a museum ship.

The Gorch Fock (II) was built in 1958 for the (West) German navy to the plans of the slightly modified later ships of the class.

      • slumbrew

Gorch Fock won the race but I’ll call bullshit since that’s a replacement that’s 20 years younger than the other Five Sisters. 😉

The Eagle was the next pier over but shared a gigantic line with the Constitution (which I’ve been on before) so we just went on the Mircea. The Gorch Fock and Sagres weren’t accepting visitors for whatever reason.

Hidden within the coveted Goose Creek corridor lies one of Southwest Montana’s most extraordinary legacy estates. Encompassing 60.16+- acres across three separately deeded parcels, this exceptionally private retreat combines timeless craftsmanship, breathtaking natural beauty, and a level of seclusion that is increasingly difficult to find.

A peaceful, quiet drive 20 minutes from Downtown Bozeman reveals a spectacular handcrafted log residence where soaring timber beams, reclaimed wood, massive river rock fireplaces, and walls of glass create a home that feels both grand and warmly inviting. Every room has been thoughtfully designed to capture the surrounding forest, mountains, and abundant wildlife, while luxurious finishes and impeccable craftsmanship elevate every space.

Designed for gathering as beautifully as it is for quiet retreat, the property includes a stunning 4,418+- SF, 3-bedroom main residence, a beautifully appointed 1,545+- SF, 2-bedroom guest home, and an impressive 2,800+- SF barn and shop featuring horse stalls, heated workspace, office, entertainment lounge, and exceptional storage for vehicles, equipment, and recreational toys.

Outside, the estate unfolds into an unforgettable landscape. A private stocked pond with dock and solar-powered fishing cabin, Goose Creek flowing through the property, miles of private trails, mature timber, open meadows, and borders National Forest. This all creates an outdoor experience few properties can offer. Spend mornings casting a fly line, afternoons exploring on horseback or ATV, and evenings gathered around the outdoor fireplace beneath Montana’s endless stars.

While the setting feels worlds away, downtown Bozeman, Yellowstone International Airport, and world-class skiing, fishing, and recreation remain within easy reach.

Slew of lawsuits over disability access frustrates US cafe and shop owners

Small busines owners say they’re being unfairly targeted – but disability advocates say violations must be dealt with

    https://www.theguardian.com/business/2026/jul/11/disability-ada-lawsuits-small-businesses

One violation alleged a table outside the restaurant was not ADA compliant, an accusation that puzzled Nogueira: the cafe had no outdoor tables. Other alleged violations were about infractions inside the restaurant, yet the plaintiff said he was unable to enter the restaurant.

When Nogueira researched the lawsui, he discovered that the plaintiff who sued him and the plaintiff’s lawyer had filed complaints against dozens of small businesses. The attorney who filed the lawsuit against him alone had filed more than 100 ADA lawsuits over the past nine years against storefront businesses.

Nogueira, sitting at a table in his café, said: “The [plaintiff] that’s suing me – he’s got 67 cases.”

Before possibly hiring a lawyer, Nogueira filed a motion to dismiss the case himself. But the judge said a company cannot represent itself in court. For small businesses, thousands of dollars in lawyers fees to just file a motion, can be prohibitively costly.

Frustrated with the process, Nogueira sought to speak with other small business owners. He went through public court records and found nearby businesses that were also being sued for ADA noncompliance.

What started as lockdown luxury quickly put Aisha Isenovic on a path to self-destruction.

By her 30th birthday, she was round-the-clock drinker, getting through 400 units of alcohol a week.

This is why Aisha thinks delivery apps played a major role in her addiction

    https://x.com/Telegraph/status/2076335974557102546

400 units seems like a lot for a chick.

    • UnCivilServant

That is roughtly Two 750ml bottles of any given 40% ABV spirit PER DAY.

      That isn’t a “Oh, delivery is a problem” that’s a “You’re a damn drunkard” problem.

    • slumbrew

      That’s roughly 23 vodka sodas a day (2 oz pour), 7 days a week.

      That a lot for anyone.

    • EvilSheldon

FYI – according to the insipid faggots at the NHS, a ‘unit’ of alcohol is 10mL of pure Ethanol. A 1-1/2oz. shot of 80-proof spirits is 1.8 units, for instance. (The less said about the Brit’s 3/4oz. ‘shot’ standard, the better.) A typical bottle of wine is about 10 units.

So Aisha was probably drinking the equivalent of three bottles of wine or a full bottle of spirits every day. My kind of girl.

      • UnCivilServant

My math said two bottles of spirits. Though it could be one 1.5L bottle.

1.8 units per 1.5oz shot, times 17 shots in a fifth, equals about 30.6 units in a bottle – you’re right. I got my units mixed up.

Tomorrow I resign as president of my local gun club and we elect a new president. It will be my last meeting to run and I’m ready to just be a member with no responsibilities beyond dues. I was going to have my thyroid cancer removed but my oncologist said, “let’s see what the lung nodule is first because it may change how we treat the thyroid.” Hopefully it is nothing to be concerned about, but with my history who knows? Germany’s Ruhr Valley: Cities on brink of financial collapse

With tax revenues down and social spending up, more and more cities and towns in the Ruhrgebiet are struggling. Oberhausen is particularly deep in the red.

    https://www.dw.com/en/germany-economy-ruhr-valley-debt/a-77905338

In Germany, decisions made at the federal and state levels force municipalities to, for example, pay the housing costs for welfare recipients or provide social assistance for people with disabilities. In Oberhausen, 50% of expenditures are earmarked for social services.

The costs of long-term care are rising because older people increasingly cannot afford to pay for nursing home care and the city has to step in.

Expenditures for youth welfare have also risen sharply as children and adolescents are increasingly having to be removed from their families because either they or the parents are struggling — often with mental health issues. Oberhausen’s treasurer notes that the COVID-19 pandemic has left its mark, but the impact of social media is particularly concerning.
