So my new residence has a small patio with a screen door (leading outside).

And there is a cricket that has been going at it for a couple days now. It’s almost soothing. More so than the screaming meth heads and other assorted mental patients that characterized the experience at my previous residence when I opened a window.

    • Evan from Evansville

(I’d love to be your Kramer neighbor.)

Is this the first night in the new place? Or the first ‘real’ night? Odd question, but I don’t think you’ll mind: Apt? How many bedrooms? In ~far future, one bedroom is most likely but I’d considered two for reasons.

I took the 6yo out to hear the crickets, etc the other night, cuz I don’t think he gets to hear ’em in the city. They’ve been really loud this year, or I don’t recall. I hope that was a fun mini-moment he remembers. Sounds like a massive, positive change of natural background noise. I’ve lived near many things, but nothing dangerous or druggy.

      • rhywun

Last night was the first night I left the door open. I was a little apprehensive but the patio is raised a bit from street level and behind a locked gate so… hopefully I won’t be attacked in my sleep?

One bedroom – the patio leads out of the bedroom to face the rear buildings from the other side of the block. I feel like James Stewart.

      • Threedoor

Won’t get attacked from the street.

Make sure you don’t have an upside down broom on your patio first.

      • rhywun

an upside down broom on your patio

I don’t know what that means but I do want to get some patio furniture now.

And maybe some friends to use it with me. 🫤

    • Chafed

      Enjoy your new place.

Crazy play in the 10th between the Sox and Marlins: Marlins catcher flat-out misses the pitch and the ump takes a 93 MPH cutter right off the facemask. It promptly ricochets and the Sox runner comes home.

@UCS: Another Robin Hood flick is coming out. “The Uprising,” which dramatises the 1381 English Peasants’ Revolt.

“Andrew Garfield stars as the leader of a ferocious rebellion against the tyranny of King Richard II. Set against the true events of the Uprising that helped inspire the legend of Robin Hood, he forms an army of the people to face the King’s might in a fight for justice.”

I know remakes and reboots have always been a thing. Seems like a lot about one specific character though, eh? (See also: Batman.) I *am* excited to see Coyote vs. ACME, though! “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?” is in my Top 10. Just, such off-kilter perfection. And lemme tell y’all whatchy’all better already know, Judge Doom and the fucking Dip was terrifying.

    • UnCivilServant

I’m all Robin Hooded out for the time being. It was a themed event that wrapped up.

      • Evan from Evansville

Yeah. I know. That’s why I’m adding it to your docket. It’s never finished. Unwrap and finish inside the theater. Teehee.

(Just teasing.) No idea how they do it, but the Peasant’s Revolt is something I’ve wanted to see done for a bit, now. I’m sure I’ve seen many parts of it put together for historical background.

    Some movie sunshine perhaps

Coyote vs. Acme has a 96% Rotten Tomatoes critic review score ahead of its wide release, with 104 reviews counted. It’s not just the best-scored animated (well, in part) movie of the year, but one of the top three wide-releases of the year, so far.

    • rhywun

Not if it gets no advertising.

I have literally never heard of this – and I was just enjoying some classic Roadrunner toons last night so when someone mentioned upthread it was in my brain.

      • R.J.

I saw the ad on YouTube. It did look interesting.
        But yes, absolutely zero advertising.

      • Evan from Evansville

Was thought up in the Roger Rabbit era but it could never be put together. I’ve read it’s quite well done, with good use of live-action and cartoon interplay. Heard the lead is actually a developed character, interestingly enough. (The lawyer.)

I’ll find an excuse to see it in theaters.

      • Brochettaward

Not a single they/them in the whole movie. Not enough representation.

I may be going crazy at this point, but I’d honestly expect some anti-capitalist messaging in that given the entire premise is evil corporation making faulty products and getting sued for it.

    • UnCivilServant

I’m disappointed in the premise, because I’ve always seen it as obvious that Wile E Coyote works as a product tester for ACME. Thats why they all malfunction in some manner, arrive quickly, and are always different. It’s obviously his job to find these faults.

      • R.J.

        You should review it.
Think of it as a palate cleanser.

      • rhywun

        What IS the premise?

      • UnCivilServant

@Rhy – Wile E Coyote Sues ACME over the products being defective is the core building block. they added more to make a feature length piece.

      • rhywun

Hm. I think I like the premise.

seen it as obvious that Wile E Coyote works as a product tester for ACME

That thought has never occurred to me. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
But it’s not an immediately wrong idea.

        It can go either way.

      • Brochettaward

        The trailer. For those interested.

It does look kind of charming and John Cena only made me cringe at first.

      • rhywun

I take it back. It looks like the same kind of Evil Corp nonsense that made me stop watching Mr Robot.

      • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

Jeez, it is as if you people were not familar with the case

pening Statement of Mr. Harold Schoff, attorney for Mr. Coyote: My client, Mr. Wile E. Coyote, a resident of Arizona and contiguous states, does hereby bring suit for damages against the Acme Company, manufacturer and retail distributor of assorted merchandise, incorporated in Delaware and doing business in every state, district, and territory. Mr. Coyote seeks compensation for personal injuries, loss of business income, and mental suffering caused as a direct result of the actions and/or gross negligence of said company, under Title 15 of the United States Code, Chapter 47, section 2072, subsection (a), relating to product liability.

Mr. Coyote states that on eighty-five separate occasions he has purchased of the Acme Company (hereinafter, “Defendant”), through that company’s mail-order department, certain products which did cause him bodily injury due to defects in manufacture or improper cautionary labelling. Sales slips made out to Mr. Coyote as proof of purchase are at present in the possession of the Court, marked Exhibit A. Such injuries sustained by Mr. Coyote have temporarily restricted his ability to make a living in his profession of predator. Mr. Coyote is self-employed and thus not eligible for Workmen’s Compensation.

Mr. Coyote states that on December 13th he received of Defendant via parcel post one Acme Rocket Sled. The intention of Mr. Coyote was to use the Rocket Sled to aid him in pursuit of his prey. Upon receipt of the Rocket Sled Mr. Coyote removed it from its wooden shipping crate and, sighting his prey in the distance, activated the ignition. As Mr. Coyote gripped the handlebars, the Rocket Sled accelerated with such sudden and precipitate force as to stretch Mr. Coyote’s forelimbs to a length of fifty feet. Subsequently, the rest of Mr. Coyote’s body shot forward with a violent jolt, causing severe strain to his back and neck and placing him unexpectedly astride the Rocket Sled. Disappearing over the horizon at such speed as to leave a diminishing jet trail along its path, the Rocket Sled soon brought Mr. Coyote abreast of his prey. At that moment the animal he was pursuing veered sharply to the right. Mr. Coyote vigorously attempted to follow this maneuver but was unable to, due to poorly designed steering on the Rocket Sled and a faulty or nonexistent braking system. Shortly thereafter, the unchecked progress of the Rocket Sled brought it and Mr. Coyote into collision with the side of a mesa.

No, Zwak, I read that article years ago, and rejected it because it was wrong.

      • Evan from Evansville

        *stomps foot* I AM EXCITED.

I also predict anti-‘capitalist’ bullshit, but ACME has an easily likelihood of being a shitty company who needs takin’ down. I like the Product Tester idea, but a ‘Class Action’ of all the failed products and their combined failure rate and medical issues is a funny idea, if they go that route. I read it gets a bit too into itself, playing the legal angle more than it should. *shrug*

Even though based on (to kids these days!) ancient cartoons, it’s good to reward folk for doing something original with ’em. Been floating around since the late 80s and they finally got it together. Good on them.

Every time someone virtue-signaled by using a Nitter (or maybe it was xcancel) link, the page wouldn’t open properly in the background, instead giving the same “checking that you’re not a bot” stuff until I put the tab in the foreground. At least I didn’t have to do a captcha.

    Cease and desist

On 24 August 2026 cease and desist letters have been sent by X Corp. demanding a permanent takedown of Nitter instances and the project’s repository.

nitter.net is offline and development has stopped for the time being. I’m seeking legal advice and won’t be commenting further on the specifics for now.

Thank you to everyone who used, hosted, packaged, donated and contributed to Nitter over the past seven years.

    • UnCivilServant

I can only conclude that the issue is that it took out the ads – which is a direct financial impact.

      • rhywun

But I take out ads on every site I visit. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

But yeah, “X” is more powerful than the average bear.

      • UnCivilServant

“Our service is predicated on providing specifically your content less the elements that make you money” versus “I, the consumer, avoid ads served to me” are two different legal situations.

      • rhywun

        Fair enough.

Nitter was more functional than just removing ads, as well. Such as providing access to vids and comments that otherwise required an account.

  19. ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

God Damn Safeway. I have been ordering pickup from them for years now, but they changed the app to default its pickup time to Express (double lightning bolt), which means I have to head over to the damn store at 9-10PM. Stupid phone optimized apps (and seriously, it is a fucking program. Don’t give a cute BS name) need to be able to be used on a laptop, were those of us with normal fingers can select normal things. But the sheer number of in-site pop ups (do you want ice cream, did you forget lemons?) make navigating the stupid thing impossible.

    Son of a Bitch

    • rhywun

      Am honestly baffled at this.

I have never, not once twice*, been interested in ordering groceries instead of just going there for myself. GRANTED, I am still capable of doing so. I am old/infirm enough to envision a time in the near future where that is not the case so apologies if that is the case.

*The one time is when I was sick as a dog and living in a town without a car or easy access to meds.

      • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

I don’t walk too well anymore, and I would rather not spend the time I have wandering around a store. I am not worried about quality of veg, as the wife loves going to farmers markets and farm stands, which is where all of our meat comes from too. It is just as easy to keep a rolling shopping list and add things too it over the week, and then just swing by and pick it up. Keeps impulse purchases down, which helps the budget and the waistline.

      • rhywun

        Got it.

I love wandering around the grocery store and rue the day I can’t do that any more. I just moved out of an apartment building full of lazy graduate students who have absolutely everything delivered and it made me ornery.

    • Threedoor

      Safeway was too expensive for
      Me when they were local.

  20. Gustave Lytton

I like Islands in the Stream over I Will Always Love You.

    • slumbrew

      Same.

    • Gender Traitor

Fair enough, but I love the story about how Elvis almost covered “I Will Always Love You.” As I recall from an interview with Dolly I saw years ago, she was thrilled that Elvis wanted to cover it. However, the night before the scheduled recording session, Colonel Tom called her and said, essentially, “You know Elvis always gets a share of the song rights.” Dolly refused, because she never gave up any of the publishing rights to her original songs. She said the money from those songs was for her nieces’ and nephews’ educations. So the recording didn’t happen.

But as she pointed out, when Whitney Houston covered it years later, “I made enough money to buy Graceland.”

    • rhywun

I like Jolene over either of those.

      • Evan from Evansville

Indeed. Also like Jack White’s simple cover. She earned the money. Props.

    • rhywun

Now I want to watch “9 to 5”. I haven’t seen it in 40 years or so but I remember it being competent and Dabney Coleman is nothing if not a spectacular villain in everything I have seen him in.

      • Evan from Evansville

        Lily Tomlin’s great in everything.

I love she’s Mrs. Fritz. (Speaking of earning their money.) Also enjoy I Heart Huckabees, which I’m likely on my own in liking it, here. It’s been forever, but I enjoyed the over-the-top silliness of it, played straight. There were a few similar flicks like that in a row, if I’m not mistaken.

    • Ted S.

Islands in the Stream was actually written by the Bee Gees.

      • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

It was written by Ernest Hemingway first.

Note: When I let y’all know about my steady-paycheck status, do remind me about this. This place has been the coin’s flip side of my family, helping to keep me the somewhat sane creature ‘before’ you. Least I can do. (Well. The least would be nothing, but no thing about that seems proper.)

I’ve mentioned my little memoir-project I’m working on, and a much-tightened, non-gory version of Crest Quest is the hook opening. Chapter 2 is about my bold but quick-lived expedition to Daejeon only five months after The Incident. I arrived just as COVID lockdowns started. Again, looking back, uh? That seems extra non-sane. Well. No can say I wasn’t trying. It’s kinda a dour chapter, booze is introduced, but I’m pleased I don’t know how to write sappy. Also, the end, with me on the crazy plane back to America, that really was something special. A+ Cinematic Life Moment.

Exceptionally pleased with my job interview next Monday. I’m glad on my employment rung, ya kinda really gotta fuck up the interview for it not to go further. So I’m kinda on vacation. I should get said Chapter, and perhaps another, done before then. Decompress time!

      • R C Dean

        I’m annoyed at wordpress.

    Bill Gates continues his slide.

Gates called for taxes on AI tokens and bots. This could delay companies’ rush away from human labor. Those taxes could also fund a social safety net for retraining people whose jobs won’t exist. He noted that the funding could offset income tax revenue—which will shrink if fewer people work—so that governments can provide services.

    https://www.wsj.com/tech/ai/three-takeaways-from-bill-gatess-5-784-word-warning-on-ai-there-is-no-plan-aa0c3441?st=qHzyfH&reflink=desktopwebshare_permalink

How is one to afford Russian hookers with such a tax?

    • Ted S.

      Fuck you, cut spending.

      • cyto

        Just spittin’ in the wind.

Instead of “cut spending”, everyone is championing new spending.

        And new regulations.

It is like something broke somewhere between the era Bill Clinton and Newt Gingrich and the election of Obama that allowed infinite, unfettered spending.

Bush left with a trillion dollars for the financial crisis and Obama came in and they just continuing resolutioned away all budget restraints.

There are no consequences. In fact, a substantial part of fhe electorate actively *wants* the nation destroyed (so they can usher in the socialist/communist utopia). Hence the intentional hyper-inflation under Biden, the ludicrous minimum wage laws ($25 an hour for all fast food workers… except at my buddy’s restaurant)

This AI tax idea is just another way to bring down the system. Like other dumb ideas (like CO2 restrictions or taxes), all this would do is push productivity gains to other countries.

I was gonna say something like “these people are not serious”, but honestly, it is we the people who are not serious. Mamdani actually got elected with promises of confiscating private housing and even “the means of production”.

Karen Bass got the most votes in the LA mayor race, despite having utterly failed. And her opponent in the general election was part of that failure and promises to fail even harder if she wins.

We are not a serious people anymore.
