Bessent’s inner circle is drafting a blueprint that could ultimately strip non-compliant organizations of their 501(c)(3) status, according to two of the people familiar with the plans. The reviews could result in massive back payments and civil penalties, the same sources said.

    “Could”, unnamed sources.

Call me when the Feds actually strip those organizations of their 501(c)(3) status. Until then, it’s still “nothing happens” o’clock.

    • AlexinCT

I am seriously not getting this “Nothing is happening” thing. I can get “I want more of it, faster”, maybe “I don’t trust unnamed sources”, and obviously “I hate that things are too slow because to get people legally takes time”, but “Mothing is happening”, to me sounds, as if your internal clock has been wrecked by social media and television where everything happens in 30 mins to an hour.

Also what is the alternative? Go back to “All the bad shit is happening”?

      • DEG

The alternative is doing something. Not talking about it.

This is talk. Talk is cheap.

      • AlexinCT

I recall a lot of people saying shit was talk a year ago that is happening now. I see none of those people saying “My bad”. No, they are doubling down on the whining.

      • (((Jarflax

There are people being deported, but our elections are not going to be fixed for the mid terms, the debt is growing faster than ever, and Trump still hasn’t realized that the trade deficit is a big part of what has been preventing the dollar from tanking. (for those who share his blindness it works like this: A trade deficit is literally us sending more dollars overseas for stuff than we take back from overseas for stuff. Since stuff has value, and dollars are merely counters of value, the more stuff we have, per dollar in circulation the more each dollar will buy. Reducing the trade deficit means bringing dollars here and sending stuff overseas.)

        This.

That is why were are complaining.

      • PutridMeat

That is why were are complaining.

I understand the complaints. I understand the “And nothing else will happen” (in no small part because of entrenched interests/decades of judicial appointments).

What I find frustrating about it is – “what’s the solution?” You’re not getting anything through congress – look at the SAVE act. How do you make it ‘permanent’ in our system of government when 1) you have decades of entrenched revolutionaries and 2) your fellow citizens seem content with continuing the status quo?

I prefer talking about issues, doing things – even if short term – to just letting it ride. We get to the bottom quicker letting it ride, but I’m not sure I’ll like what’s at the bottom. At least talking about issues and making efforts, however futile or misguided, normalize the position and make it possible for more serious and/or effective people to keep pushing forward.

      • DEG

I prefer talking about issues, doing things – even if short term – to just letting it ride.

The Federal government is collapsing. Donald Trump is not and never was the guy to fix it, even if he had a willing Congress. He’s always been a charlatan.

I do stuff where people are actually serious about making change and actually get things done.

      • PutridMeat

I do stuff where people are actually serious about making change and actually get things done.

        That’s partly the way.

And maybe the skids can be greased a bit at this level by normalizing the ideas at the national level, even if the implementation is poorly executed.

And I will not minimize the impact of putting the skids on censorship, pushing back, both in words and deeds, on trans and DEI stuff. By doing that, it makes it much more likely that efforts on the local level can progress to do something concretely. It opens up the field for the more competent and effective to do better things. Hell, 3 years ago, you couldn’t talk about things like that, let along enact any effective push-back. That’s not nothing, and given where we’ve let ourselves get to, probably the best that one can expect at the national level.

      • rhywun

I do agree about talk having some cultural impact and pushback on some of the recent ridiculousness. Hell, it’s probably more consequential than any of Donald’s executive orders.

      • AlexinCT

So how does complaining and making it easier for the next democrat admin to screw us all over help?

I am not being a dick, but it is stunning to me that anyone would think the thing to do is complain and undermine the chances of staying the course, instead of making sure others jump on the bandwagon, even if it till take time to get what we want/need, so we can get there.

      • UnCivilServant

No, Alex, I’m afraid treaties and international agreements don’t work on “exact words” magic. If they reference a geographic name which changes later, it continues to apply to the feature as understood at the time of the agreement. So agreements regarding Lake Ontario and the Gulf of Mexico remain in force despite the temporary mislabelling.

One thing I have noticed is that the new voter doesn’t vote for a government that tries to maintain infrastructure and the basic services for the least amount of money as possible like they did in the past, and seems to be a feminized asshat voting for feelings (social justice!!). But when you have decades of that shit and everything is breaking down, even the dumbest voter focused on nonsense will feel the pain and want some remediation. This idiotic and laughable stunt is an attempt to affect the idiots that are realizing everything is falling apart as billions of dollars taken from gullible people go into social welfare funding, where practically all of it is fraud and misspending.

Until we stop voting for social justice and demand working infrastructure and basic services again, expect things to keep getting worse and more of these stunts about painting stripes on a cracked road in east bumfuck.

At Thanksgiving your Dem aunt will talk about it like it’s the undisputed truth, and when you try to counter she’ll call you a conspiracy theorist.

Such is the world we live in.

    • DEG

      Local news source

Yes, a newborn male who died of a “splenatic rupture” tested positive for measles, Diamantoni said, but measles was not the cause of death — the laceration to the spleen is the cause. And measles was ruled out as a contributing factor because, Diamantoni said, “there was no swelling or enlargement whatsoever” of the spleen and there was “massive blood loss” from the laceration.

The teacher declared Lucky Charms to be an “unhealthy” cereal, and then we ranked all of the other above/below it… by vitamin content on the side panel. Interestingly enough, sugary kids cereals are fortified with vitamins and minerals out the ying-yang, while grownup non-sugared cereals aren’t. Boy as that teacher surprised when Rice Krispies was the most unhealthy cereal available, below even shredded wheat.

Once I asked my doctor why people in the US weren’t getting scurvy and things like that. I definitely don’t eat a lot of fruits and vegetables and neither do most people. Cut up peppers and put them in an omelet.

      • PutridMeat

why people in the US weren’t getting scurvy and things like that.

While it doesn’t apply to a large fraction of people in the US, you don’t actually need that much vitamin C. Glucose binds very effectively to the receptor that vitamin C does, so in a condition of chronically elevated glucose, you will be very bad at taking up vitamin C.

That’s partly why sailors had an issue – beer for drink, carb dense hard tack style things for food. Eating citrus compensates for the preferential binding by adding more C to the system.

Look at Inuits and other northern peoples – nary a fruit to be found and not a scurvy to be found.

The simple rubric of you need fruits to prevent scurvy is, as most such simplifications and ‘just-so’ type stories, much more nuanced and complicated.

So I have seen a whole bunch of people complaining about the fact Boomers had it so good while they can’t do anything. They use all sorts of twisted statistics and make some really dubious claims that always come back to “Why do I have to work so hard, sacrifice the luxury expenditures I want, or do something as crazy as save up for a long time?”. I get that income has not kept up with inflation. I also get that education today is not worth the expense. My problem is that I keep noticing these kids complaining, don’t want to work, have enormous debt from dumb college degrees, spend all their money on luxury items they pretend they can’t live without, think the idea of roommates is icky, and believe they should immediately get the same standard of living as their parents, even though, on average, their parents took between 20 and 30 years to get there while limiting their luxury expenses. The scariest thing to me is that the loudest ones are women that do not want to get married and men that think work means being a social influencer making bank (cause any other sort of work is below them).

The worst part is that when you point any of this out they, throw a tantrum and accuse you of being the problem. No wonder they love the idea of socialism. Envy and jealousy seem to be now considered OK feelings instead of a sign your character is lacking.

    • (((Jarflax

There are two problems that look like one because they have similar effects despite very different causes. One problem is the erosion of the work ethic as you point out. But the other, which you give lip service to but then dismiss, is that inflation of the currency supply reduces the wealth of those whose wealth is in cash or contracts payable in cash, like employment agreements. Wages don’t keep up with inflation. They will never keep up with inflation. Inflation is not rising prices, rising prices are a symptom. Inflation is the process of those with the legal right to create the counters we have ‘agreed’ to use for exchanges creating more of them. The counters have value because we agree that they can be exchanged for stuff. Prices rise because there are now more counters chasing the same stuff. In other words the supply of counters has increased while the demand has stayed the same. This on the surface looks like it changes nothing, things cost more counters, but there are proportionally more counters to be used, but the nasty little trick is that your counters don’t increase. The new counters are in the hands of the people who get to create them (or more accurately are created as they are spent by those people, generally as loans to the Government). This quite literally, and every bit as effectively as taxes or direct robbery, redistributes wealth from workers, and businesses with cash or long term contracts for cash, to those who issued the new counters. People with assets, stock, land, etc. suffer less loss, but do not get the gains.

TLDR: There are lazy young people, but even the hard working ones are being screwed by money printer go brrr, and they are not wrong to view this as corrupt, even if their socialist solutions are retarded.

      • AlexinCT

“TLDR: There are lazy young people, but even the hard working ones are everyone is being screwed by money printer go brrr, and they are not wrong to view this as corrupt, even if their socialist solutions are retarded.”

      • (((Jarflax

Except older people have had the opportunity to acquire assets which don’t lose value from this process whereas young people are in the stage where all they have is their ability to trade labor for cash to hopefully begin acquiring assets. They are absolutely more vulnerable to this than I am because my wealth is in assets.

      • Gustave Lytton

Wealth in restricted assets and fixed incomes isn’t great either.

The greed in today’s youth is largely due to not killing enough commies and the abandonment of traditional religion & morality.

      • (((Jarflax

Yes, anything that is payable at a set rate in cash, or a rate that only changes at long intervals, is looted by inflation.

      • AlexinCT

“Except older people have had the opportunity to acquire assets which don’t lose value from this process whereas young people are in the stage where all they have is their ability to trade labor for cash to hopefully begin acquiring assets.”

I would agree with you if they couldn’t just invest in the stock market. My kid who is in this group of young people, is living frugally and investing most of his earnings, and he will have enough money put away – in less than 6 yrs – to put $100K, after paying the onerous capital gains taxes, down for a home. He also does not get the newest phone the minute it comes out at the highest price or spends money buying $12 lattes, so there is that, I stress. His buddies that complain do a lot of that and doordash.

      • R C Dean

Except older people have had the opportunity to acquire assets which don’t lose value from this process

Savings are devalued by inflation. I would say older people have had the opportunity to acquire assets which may retain value, or lose value, while inflation happens. Traditionally, “pensioners” on fixed incomes are devastated by inflation.

Inflation also makes debt easier to repay. Young people are more likely to have a higher debt to asset ratio, meaning the impact of inflation on their finances is more complex than a simple “Old people are rich and inflation doesn’t matter to them, and young people are poor and hit harder by inflation”.

Everybody is screwed by a devaluing currency except people who hold debt at rates below the rate of inflation.

Several places with 2 bedrooms and 6 guys living there was not uncommon. Bunks in each room and learning to live with other knuckle heads.

Wasn’t fun, but it was all we could afford.

I also wonder what factor that credit has played in all of this. When I was a young man no one would think of giving us a credit card. Checks were available, but they used to actually prosecute people who wrote bad ones.

When we ran out of money, we were just out of money. Sat home and waited for the next pay check. Now? Credit cards to the rescue! All the Altar Kids had credit card companies begging them to take one of their cards when they checked into their freshmen dorms.

UnCiv: According to people who claim their opinions matter, pistols should be zeroed at 45′.

I zeroed mine at 50′ because that’s the range KFGC has at their pistol shack. Even with slide-mounted optics there’s not much height over bore, BUT at 105′ (the length of targets in two steel challenge stages) my POI is higher than my POA. Not enough to miss as long as I’m holding center, but the bullet is still travelling up.

    • PieInTheSky

zeroing? did cowboys in the wild west zero their Peacemaker? I think not. people these days.

      • UnCivilServant

Cowboys would have killed for a semiauto with a green dot.

      • Common Tater

No, they wouldn’t. You want large caliber revolver that can take down a mad steer.

      • UnCivilServant

Tater – you realize that the 45 colt that the peacemaker was chambered in provides no more energy than a 45 ACP, and only marginally more than a 9mm Para? Not until you get into the +P rounds that were not on the market back then and would probably break the old Colt.

      • Not Adahn

Bah. Olde-tymey black power loads are extremely underpowered by modern standards. Heck, .45ACP was chosen specifically because of its cow-killing power!

      • UnCivilServant

*The reference I was using might have been for smokeless .45 colt, and not black powder.

    • Common Tater

It’s how far away whatever you are shooting. 45′ seems a bit much for practical applications.

      • (((Jarflax

You are confusing zero, which is effectively fixed during shooting as changing it requires a process, and aim point. The purpose of zeroing to a set distance is so you can easily calculate aim points. That said there is very little difference between point blank and 50 feet. A 9mm will drop something like half an inch in that distance.

      • Not Adahn

Correct. Remember that since most sights are over the bore, the round will be rising until at least the point of zero (which is why my 105′ shots hit high with a 50′ zero, but would be low at some longer range) So any targets closer than that point of zero will have no greater deviation between POA and POI than the distance between the bore and the sight (and that deviation will decrease until the zero point is reached).

      • Common Tater

No, I’m not. Unless it’s set parallel (not unreasonable for a handgun) the bullet crosses the line at two points.

      • kinnath

Both of my carry pistols have green laser sights mounted under barrel.

I have them zeroed at 10 yards — point of impact is the same as the point of aim with both iron sights and the laser at 10 yards.

Most violent encounters occur inside that distance (from what I have read).

My carry pistols have 3.3 and 3 inch barrels. I don’t expect to be shooting either of those at 25 yards or beyond, but I have practiced at that distance in the past. The difference between POI and POA at that distance is negligible compared to my accuracy with a 3ish inch barrel at that distance.

        YMMV

      • Not Adahn

You’re not wrong (AFAIK) that actual defensive pistol use isn’t out at 35 yards. However, most of my trigger time is out doing fun gun stuff, and all close targets gets boring fast and also rewards pure speed over everything else.

And I do keep one of my competition guns as the nightstand gun, because why the fuck not? It works great and I can hit stuff fast with it, especially at any conceivable distance inside my house.

    • EvilSheldon

I generally do an initial zero of my pistol at 10 yards (at that distance I expect to have the bullet holes touching), then confirm at 25 yards.

There are arguments to be made in favor of a 15-yard zero, but I’m used to my method.

    • UnCivilServant

Speaking of triggers, the trigger safety on the Shield X Is significantly more comfortable than on the Glock and I figured out why. They added a face plate for the finger to push against that is basically the width of the trigger, so it’s a forward half of the tirgger and you don’t have this narrow blade digging in to your finger as you disengage the safety before reaching the main trigger pull.

      • EvilSheldon

The Shield X (really the M&P style in general) is more comfortable, but it’s also somewhat less functional as a safety and more vulnerable to snag hazards.

When I was shooting Glocks more often, I would sometimes take the factory trigger and shave the safety down until it was flush with the trigger face when fully deactivated. This made it more comfortable, but also increased the chance that the trigger safety could fail to deactivate if my trigger finger placement wasn’t perfect.

There are only tradeoffs here in this imperfect world.

      • Sensei

Wow. I’ve never shot enough rounds in single sessions through my G21 to even notice the trigger safety or have it get annoying to pull the trigger.

      • UnCivilServant

With the Kydex holster I have, I only have to worry about my shirt as a snag issue, but that’s more likely to snag on the rest of the gun than get inside the trigger guard. So I think I should be good as long as I drill clearing the shirt in its entirety.

      • UnCivilServant

@Sensei – I disliked the Glock trigger safety at 0 rounds fired. Just the way it felt put me off.

So, a few weeks back, I bought Splatoon Raiders to try it out.

The default control scheme has got to be the stupidest I have ever seen. Left-right aiming was with the analog stick, while up-down was by motion controls. Now, had it been 100% analog stick or 100% motion control I could at least understand the thought processes that went into it. Both of those make sense. This 50/50 mixup did not. And it was impossible to work with, because my mind kept expecting the control I was using for a given axis would apply to the other axis, so I was fighting the system and consciously going “no, now I have to go use that instead” when these things need to be instinctive.

I was on the verge of abandoning it entirely when I got past the point in the tutorial where they Finally unlocked the configuration options to switch to 100% analog stick. After that controls were mostly a breeze.

    • rhywun

I had the same experience. The motion control sucks ass and I turned it off only to discover why they implemented motion control in the first place – because of the chaos coming at you from every direction. I find the analog stick aiming difficult to deal with so much going on at once.

I remember hearing on a podcast that Scrivener is a great tool for writers (https://www.literatureandlatte.com/scrivener/overview).

    Some things that impressed me:
    1. The product looks well designed and has good reviews
    2. The price is $59. Not per month, not a subscription. Just one time license. You get free minor releases, and have to pay for major new releases (discounted for current users).
    3. The license is good for multiple computers in your house, as long as they have the same O/S.
    4. I’m using the free trial version. It’s the full version, good for 30 days. But not 30 calendar days – 30 days of use. If you used it every other day, then you get it for 60 days.

So far I like it, and I’ll buy it if I end up using it a lot.

A federal judge has ruled in favor of artificial intelligence company Anthropic in its legal battle against the Pentagon after the government labeled the company as a supply chain risk earlier this year.

U.S. District Judge Rita Lin issued a written order Thursday night that the Pentagon acted illegally by punishing the AI company for its criticism of the Department of Defense’s views on AI use. The government is expected to fight the ruling.

    ——-

Lin wrote that the government’s actions “were based on a desire to make a public example out of Anthropic for its ‘arrogance’ in criticizing the government, not based on any articulable basis to believe that Anthropic would actually sabotage its model.”

Now all she has to do is set damages based on what a contract would have been worth.

    Being a judge is awesome.

  32. The Late P Brooks

In the 59-page ruling, Lin, an appointee of former President Joe Biden, wrote that neither the Constitution nor the federal statute the government invoked allows them to “impose sweeping penalties based principally on Anthropic’s critique of the Administration’s views.”

Anthropic sued the Pentagon over the supply chain risk designation in March for what it called an “unlawful campaign of retaliation” over its refusal to allow unrestricted military use of its technology.

The legal challenge intensified an unusually public dispute over how AI can be used in warfare and mass surveillance. Anthropic’s primary tech industry rival, ChatGPT maker OpenAI, made its own deal to work with the Pentagon just hours after the government punished Anthropic for its stance.

“You want the job, but you don’t want to accept the terms of the contract. Is that about it? NEXT!”
