Saturday evening Links

Well, the family arrived in the Gulch safe and sound yesterday evening. Son in law has been on the line since one today. No rest for the wicked, I’m paying for that stuff.

Links?

“I just own my own winery. I have no idea how this got here.”

There’s no truth to the rumor that the ghost of Dennis Hopper was seen in the area.

Suck it, Dick’s.

I think he’s at the Find Out part.

Milo comes full circle.

No corruption to see here.

It always leads back to the spooks.

Taking a page out of the COVID playbook. Despicable.

Is it communism if it’s someone else’s oil?

Okay, I’m good. Time to head back down to the shop for some grub and a glass of wine. Peace out, Glibbies.

I had someone mention measles in prep to an anti Trump rant. So I casually asked, who has more measles deaths – U.S., Canada or Mexico? She did actually answer (or guess) correctly.

    • rhywun

      Well… what was the answer?

      • juris imprudent

Canada, with their wonderful universal healthcare.

    • Threedoor

      Did she understand per capita?

Milo should have followed the process. Adios.

As for the Sporting Goods Store – turning Anti-Gun didn’t help you retain or attract customers, did it? You certainly lost my business. Now there’s a Bass Pro nearby so you’re *bleep*ed.

I walked out of Dick’s 15-20 years ago when they wanted me to show an ID.

I said something like, “Oh it must be the glasses, makes me look younger” and left the .22 ammo on the counter.

      I ain’t been back.

      • Spudalicious

When they did the whole ‘black guns bad” thing, I was done. I already thought they were a shitty business.

I shopped Cabela’s in Owatonna as I drove by. I bought a lot of reloading components on sale for some of the odd stuff that fell in the river.

    • EvilSheldon

Iโ€™ve been boycotting Dickโ€™s since they bought out Galyans. Iโ€™ve never been accused of not being able to hold a grudge.

    • SandMan

They lost my business over the anti gun crap, and I had actually shopped there quite a bit.

Fauci’s ties to American intelligence run far deeper than anyone outside a handful of investigators realized.

    Where is my fainting couch?

    • Evan from Evansville

“Newly disclosed documents reveal that Fauci’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) had a formal institutional partnership with the CIA, one that provided cover for the agency’s biological-threat research. … Documents that the Daily Caller obtained show an interagency agreement in which the CIA’s Biological Technology Center launched a collaboration with NIAID focused on “forensic microbiology” involving potential bioterrorism agents. The CIA used its own funding to leverage NIAID’s existing civilian research programs, tapping unclassified virus research to “augment and complement” its own research and development.
      —–
“Vice President Cheney assigned Fauci to head US biodefense research programs in 2002, including bioweapons-agents-development and bioweapons-agents-characterization research programs that approached, and arguably crossed, red lines set by the Biological Weapons Convention,” Ebright explained. “The documents show early steps in the process of transferring funding for, and direction of, CIA and DoD biodefense projects to Fauci’s agency, NIAID.โ€’
      ==============
That goblin gnome should be on public display. Problem: Too many people invested far too much in believing his bullshit, because they don’t want to look like the Nazi collaborators who shut down society and called hotlines to snitch and went along with it all. They don’t want to ‘reveal’ they were taken for a big fucking ride, that they actually *gasp!* FELL for that shit, and complied with pride.

COVID must remain that evil demon illness so people can feel good about acting as pathetic as they did. Again, with pride. That’s why nothing will happen. People would have to admit it. Nope.

It’s looking more like the coof was some sort of bioweapon, which perhaps escaped by accident. Not a terribly effective one but I am sure there are improved versions waiting in the wings.

      • Evan from Evansville

“Itโ€™s looking more like the coof was some sort of bioweapon… Not a terribly effective one” It was terrifyingly effective. World-changing (repeating) effective. Look how easy it was to get the West to pathetically bend the knee.

*Dr. Evil observes* “They wimp out over a bad case of the sniffles?! DAMN. Look how easy it’ll be next time! They like stickers, too! We’ll just give ’em big GOLD ones for delivering those poor, disabled, disadvantaged, minority children to the ditch! Right on their chests! To the ones less effective in transporting those in dire need, they get red ones! ‘AIM HIGHER’ it’ll read!”

      • rhywun

Look how easy it was to get the West to pathetically bend the knee.

Well, yeah but I’m not sure if that was the point of the exercise or just a really fortunate happenstance.

It’s all speculation because we will never know.

Based on things I have read, our refineries (some of them, anyway) are better suited to handle heavy crude from Venezuela than the lighter stuff we pump out of the ground here.

    • Spudalicious

We’re the only country that can refine their dirty crude without mixing it first with cleaner oils.

    • creech

Gulf Oil had a refinery in Phila. that did nothing but refine Venezuelan crude. I remember (my Dad was in IT there) huge mountains of yellow sulphur that had been extracted from the crude.

So, a while back I remarked how I habitually picked up Red Boat when I buy Fish Sauce. I looked into the company and I’m confused.

So, the guy who founded it grew up in Saigon, then fled to the US, where he went into Tech for a few decades before getting disappointed in the Thai fish sauce on the market, so he visited Vietnam, bought a small factory to make his own. He couldn’t make money unless he sold at western prices, so his primary market was initially just the US, but is still mainly western countries.

So the owner is born in vietnam, lives in the US, the product it made in Vietnam, and almost only sold in the US.

Is it a US or Vietnamese company?

    • rhywun

Would guess wherever it’s incorporated. Prolly the US?

I have only ever bought fish sauce once but did not find enough uses for it plus life intervened and I found myself not cooking from scratch so much anymore.

      • UnCivilServant

One advantage Red Boat has is it also comes in tiny bottles. I did not need a half liter of fish sauce.

      • The Hyperbole

        Deport anyone that uses it.

      • Fourscore

Apparently we need liters, several at a time. Mrs F is not using so much anymore as her cooking is less often and we still have a few back up bottles of ‘nuoc mam’. She also has stopped eating the hot, hot peppers that she still has lots of frozen and pickled from years gone by.

She is becoming more Minnesotan as time passes.

      • UnCivilServant

From the sound of it Hype wants the leftover fish sauce for himself.

You know, you can buy it for yourself, it’s not that expensive, and they’ll gladly sell it to even a white guy.

    • Evan from Evansville

That dude had an interesting life. Back when I cooked, I’d rarely (if ever) cook fish, but I certainly wouldn’t be putting fish sauce on it. Seems to be missing the point, but the bigger point is that fish is tremendously overrated as food. Meh. That’s too harsh. It’s just fine. After tuna and salmon, the rest of the fish all taste the same.

      Wisdom pours from me.

      • rhywun

lol Fish sauce is not for fish. Even I know that.

      • UnCivilServant

Fish Sauce isn’t sauce for fish, it is sauce from fish. It’s used as an ingredient in other dishes – adding salt and ‘umami’

And you’re pretty wrong as to fish for food.

      • Nephilium

Fish sauce is made from fish, not for fish.

Attempts to replicate it were responsible for ketchup and worcestershire sauce.

      • Aloysious

        Wisdom pours from me.

I, for one, am full of wisdom. Everyone else uses another word, but what do they know.

      • rhywun

I never liked fish much as a youngster but I appreciate it more nowadays. I flurv salmon – it’s probably the only fish I might consider ordering when chicken or beef is also available.

OTOH I have had all kinds of bony weirdo fish especially in China or with Chinese friends and those were good too.

      • Evan from Evansville

*reads* Seems I was mistaken someplace. I’ll narrow it down: Fish is overrated. To make sure *everyone* is displeased, I’ll go further: Food is overrated. Just eat calories, in decent proportions to proteins, fat, etc, and clear it out with fiber. Don’t overdo caloric intake, and don’t forget to eat, neither. Some of it tastes better than others, I suppose, but that’s far too individual to make any umbrella statement.

People make an awful lot about food. Mostly cuz people used to eat together, I suppose. Had to fake things to say in the (likely?) case ya didn’t really wanna or couldn’t say real things.

I’d prefer a perfectly red filet and some choice sides, etc to complete the whole meal. But considering the time and cost of getting that food, if I do it myself or pay someone else, or if I prepare, cook and clean up, it’d have to be an event for it to be worth the trade offs vs, uh, something frozen I’m gonna bake for $6. Or granola bars, pineapple, yogurt. Well, that’s pretty much all I eat unless someone else is paying. I just don’t see the big deal.

Meh. I rather like cooking for people when there’s occasion. Otherwise? Uh. I’ll take about 1,500 calories a day, please. (Or whatever I eat.) Thx.

      • rhywun

In my dotage I don’t entertain much anymore so oh well. I still like to experiment once in a while. I also like to pop a frozen Stouffers into the microwave.

      • Fourscore

We’re doing the same, Rhy. It’s a lot easier, lots of variety at the store and clean up is much less.

Made the final big purchase on bicycle components to do the resto-mod my 50 year old bike.

Getting ready to push the button, the rational part of the brain says “why the fuck are we doing this?” . . . “why don’t you just buy a new bike?”

And the excitable part of the brain says “because it will be fun . . so fuck off”. And then I pushed the button.

At any rate I’ll have all the parts in hand within weeks. Then I can tear down the bike, strip the old paint, and start over.

I will be replacing everything except the frame, handle bar stem, and handle bar. Because everything else is subject to wear.

It will essentially be new bike when it is over.

Of course, all projects can spin off into disaster. Part of excitement I suppose.

    • UnCivilServant

Fixing the disaster is part of the process.

      Good on you.

    • rhywun

I’m the opposite. I am not a tinkerer, at all. Tinkering is something I work long hours at shit I actually enjoy in order to earn enough money to pay somebody else to do.

    • Evan from Evansville

As long as it’s fun, or if the reward is more than the fuss ‘n strain, have fun with it!

Rhy mirrors my phrasing, particularly when looking for work and my not, necessarily, care about what I do: “Work is what you do to afford play.” The more comfortable and accessible said fun can be, well. Bit of an incentive for more work.

My next big financial ‘purchase,’ commitment, will afford me infinitely more space and time for fun than at present. NOT tinkering will bring much fun. I’m doing just fine, here. Went to a street festival in Indy with the 6 and 11yo with bro and parents. Good lord, I will say, an exorbitant amount of poison frog dye was congealed in the hair of attendees. I’m just ‘not used’ to having my own place. Last time was for maybe three months in 2023 in Kokomo, didn’t have time to ‘settle’ and think about scenes.

Will be quite an interesting adventure. But much to come before that can be realized. *plugs along*

    • kinnath

And just dropped 200 bucks on new old stock pedals and toe clips, because they don’t make them anymore.

Modern riders use “clipless” pedals and special-purpose cycling shoes to lock into the pedals.

Except, they only come in standard widths. The guy with 4E shoes with orthopedic inserts says that ain’t gonna work.

    • Grumbletarian

Make an article out of the process, please! And good luck.

    • R C Dean

the final big purchase on bicycle components

Youโ€™re funny. Its like you never done a project before.

  12. rhywun

I had an interesting comment before I just got bot-fucked and *poof* it’s escaped me.

Something about the whiskey sour I just made and how I might dare adding an egg white to the next one. The internet tells me that’s dangerous and I not sure I give a flying fuck anymore.

    • Nephilium

If you’re really concerned, get pasteurized eggs or use aquafaba. Of course, considering the whiskey and lemon, unless you’re immunocompromised, the risk is below minimal..

      • rhywun

        I am immunocompromised – maybe?

Because reasons I basically had the blood of a newborn baby last year. I completed the whole battery of vaccines recently and was just informed it’s looking A-OK.

I don’t wear masks, I cook runny eggs, and now that I live in the big city again I ride crowded trains with the unwashed masses all the time. Nothing. I am stronk like bear.

      • Nephilium

        rhywun:

That would put the risk to minimal. Personally, I’m not concerned for myself, but that’s a choice.

If you go the route, I recommend adding a dry shake (10-15 seconds with no ice, it’ll try to pop on you) and double straining (one a fine mesh, strains out any proteins that coagulate due to alcohol/acid). Neither are strictly necessary, but will give you the best foamy top that you can decorate with a couple of drops of bitters.

      • rhywun

I know about the dry shake but I don’t have a fine strainer and sadly I tossed my remaining bitters bottles during a recent move. They were like a dozen or more years old anyway.

      • rhywun

        Done. Mmmm… yummy.
