Finishing Stage 1 of a house redo (my second floor) means getting rid of a bunch of tatty old furniture, replete with dog chew marks and bodily fluid stains, and replacing it with more modern options. And given my, ahem, rather isolated location, choices are limited unless I use Amazon. And nearly everything I bought from them was CNC-machines panels, bags of hardware, and instructions that are at once amusing, opaque, and frustration. I got most of the big stuff together and in place, but there’s still some nightstands needing to be erected.
Interestingly, modern headboards all come with LED light shows. Flashing colors, blinking, variable speeds with a remote control. This should help me seduce an epileptic.
I’m not questioning the amazingly rich array of birthdays today, as opposed to yesterday. Today’s riches include one of our spiritual forefathers; a guy who really should have had a vasectomy; a master of distribution; a king of screwball comedy; a chick who seems to have fucked EVERYBODY but me; the father of my favorite musical genre; a guy whose first name was Mister; a true piece of shit who was a worse pilot than Otto; a guy who was even worse than Christie; a guy who survived fucking Barbra Streisand; the spirit animal for Gabby Gifford; a very good player who had the misfortune of replacing the best ever; a mixed bag but a generally good guy; a complete fucking freakshow; a self-styled Smartest Guy In The World; and easily the best Supreme Court justice in my lifetime.
These will not be the best Links of my lifetime, however.
What was the word for the government controlling businesses? Oh yeah, now I remember. Communism.
Rich people pissed because the rest of us aren’t ponying up fast enough.
The US considers H-1 visas for specialists in Judenhass.
“OK, it wasn’t our brightest idea.”
Hilarious. [W]hat remains of the left is putting its hopes in a politician whose three areas of expertise are intersectional bosh, regulations, and taxes, a chemical combination known as Voter Repellent.
How about this: sell it ALL off to the highest bidder and use the proceeds to pay down debt.
How about this: shut the fucker down and NASA with it and use the savings to pay down debt.
If you beat that horse’s corpse enough, he’ll get up.
Neil Peart was once asked, “What does it feel like to be the best drummer in the world?” He responded, “You need to ask Karen Carpenter.” Like Ringo, totally not flashy, just perfect and serves the song, not her ego. Wonderful drumming and amazing how she could sing effortlessly while ripping through the percussion parts. OK, it’s not cool, but it’s great.

Was anybody deported solely for speech? I recall the headliners, at least, were directly involved in protests that included illegal activity.
My position is that aliens are here at our pleasure and can be removed at any time for any reason or for no reason at all. Unfortunately we don’t seem to have that.
But the “free speech” in question is being used to incite violence – that is the entire point of “pro-Palestinian advocacy and criticism of Israel”. We saw vivid demonstrations of this immediately after the Muslim terrorists attacked Israel.
And… I don’t buy the nice lady judge’s concern trolling for one second.
^This. There’s a difference between a person who is part of the family and a guest, and the biggest aspect of that difference is that a guest can be asked to leave without any right to debate the removal.
I think you are right with exception of the Turkish graduate student at Tufts. IIRC, she wrote a terrible op-ed but didn’t engage in any physical acts.
“A federal judge on Friday ruled that laws that US President Donald Trump’s administration used to cancel visas and initiate deportation proceedings against noncitizen college students based on their pro-Palestinian advocacy and criticism of Israel are unconstitutional. ”
What about assault, material support of terrorism, etc?
I thought her three areas of expertise were having a nice rack, managing her social media profile, and delegating her grift to her low-T sidepiece.
Campaign slogan: “Not Quite as Bad as Harris!”
lol If anything, she is worse than Kamala. Just as brainless and even more of a commie.
My God it’s going to epic. Make it happen, Dems!
No one wanted to fuck Kamala.
This is correct. If AOC releases a sextape I might rethink my disgust with her.
She’s a DC 7.
She identifies as an airplane?
She does have a lot of baggage.
AOC in mom jeans.
What has been seen can not be unseen.
Shocking, but the headline is a lie. Trading or selling are not giving away.
Trading a quarter mile strip on the edge is worse than giving El Capitan away.
Just a few years ago some idiot gave an adjacent ranch to the park.
Never give land to the state. A land trust or a tribe.
Shockingly, the Guardian has determined that this is Donald’s fault.
It probably is. Even a broken clock and all that. If he conditioned the aid on additional fire suppression measures he would at least have an argument.
This is the first I’m hearing of delays (at least in California) being caused by federal rather than local or state incompetence. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
The last time I paid attention Gavin was deliberately plotting to eminent domain that land into affordable housing or some shit. He’s always bragging how fantastically successful his state is, why does even need my help??
“The affidavit says Love allegedly portrayed himself to women as an NFL player for the 49ers or a wealthy Swiss real estate developer.”
That’s a big difference there.
Why do I doubt there is, or has ever been, a wealthy black Swiss real estate developer?
”oh, you guys”
There was this one guy, a professor, Arlay or Ardway, something like that
And Dayton-area icon! Has his own suburb named after him! Not a particularly prestigious suburb…but higher status than where I live. 😞
Trying to recapture existing higher ed institutions is probably a fool’s game at this point. The beginnings of an alternate academy are beginning to emerge, and I am modestly hopeful that the current institutions will be routed around as damage.
The interesting question is, what do with their material resources? There are hundreds of billions of dollars worth of capital tied up in organizations and activities that are worthless at best. Seems wasteful not to redirect it to something productive, but I don’t have any good ideas how.
Trump could use that cash to pay down the debt, pay for the burned up houses, rebuild Venezuela’s oil fields, create a new big, beautiful government agency named the Trump Institute of Natural Bovine Fertilizer. Barron gonna need a job, after all.
Yeah, that is a war chest that the radical left will be using to help smash the system for many decades to come.
As well as continuing to shamelessly reward their DEI heroes beyond all reason.
Given our current demographics, a good number of universities will close. Perhaps some of the newer educational programs will be able to repurpose their facilities.
Make the left tie the moneys up in propping up the left. In other words, remove external sources as much as possible, but allow them to spend it as they wish. The money will first be used to keep existing structures in place, even as they are failing (and we are seeing this with HBCUs, SLACs, and other lower end leftish institutions) and Yale, Princeton, and Harvard will be in a similar place if they keep on the same trajectory. This is what happened with many churches, and they still failed in the end no matter the money.
Basically, let them through good money after bad.
At Space Academy, the students will not be called plebes, but probees. Obviously short for probationary. Nothing else.
Good to hear, I’m pro-bee
It sounds like a mess. It will be part of NASA so outside the military but serve as the academy for the Space Force which is.
Are you telling Trump didn’t think things through? Prepare my fainting couch.

Good riddance.
But I would love to see the likes of AOC or Momdaddy shed some crocodile tears while coming to the defense of yet another poor persecuted immigrant.
Dumbass.
Good morning! We made it to the weekend. Have a wonderful day, friends.
You do the same, Kevin!
Amen. It was a really long week.
It took me a while to realize just how talented Ringo was.
I hadn’t heard the Peart quote before.
“All rock quotes are fake.”
— Frank Zappa
I think Ringo was trying to keep up with the bandmates by playing some unconventional rhythms — to the ear of someone with more traditional expectations it sounds sloppy but a lot of it is quite adept and fits the music.
“U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) recently added an official nutrition profile for watermelon rind, providing new information about its nutritional value while highlighting a potential way to reduce food waste.”

No.
Idiots. It is great for my compost pile.
Watermelon pickles are delicious
You’re not from the South, are you CT?
The best part of being taken to visit elderly female residents as a young boy is that they’d always have a jar of watermelon rind pickles which they’d put up themselves. I would patiently wait until the magical moment I was sent to retrieve the jar from the cellar steps, or similar dark, creaky, spidery place. Then, the glorious reward: vinegar, sickeningly sweet corn syrup, and a crunchy cube dyed either red or green with now-banned FD&C colors.
That reads like a Truman Capote excerpt.
Tonio:
Not just a southern thing, you can get them around here from the Amish, most farmer’s markets, or any of the specialty stores selling the adjacent jarred goods and baking mixes.
Brings back memories of my youth.
In days gone by we didn’t believe watermelons would grow this far north. In today’s world starting plants indoors, commercial fertilizers and “daylight savings time” we’re able grow quality melons in our shorter time. I have some good looking w’melons growing, need another 10 days or so of warm weather and the melons will be way superior to the store stuff. The rinds are too thin to make pickles, unfortunately.
With political acumen like this, how could AOC not win?!
By failing to wear a tight DSA t-shirt?
I was not sure whether she was officially a communist – this is good to know.
“Previously, the representative joined DSA in 2018 with a one-year membership, which DSA’s national leadership recently noticed had lapsed, in 2019. She has since renewed her membership as of this month.”
We didn’t notice for seven years that she wasn’t paying dues anymore. You should put us in charge of the country.
lol right? JFC
“WASHINGTON — A Kentucky woman was indicted on two counts for vandalizing a World War II memorial in DC, US Attorney Jeanine Pirro announced on Friday.

Abortion to the 75th trimester.
These women need to be skinned alive in the public square.
That track is not on my Carpenters best-of. 🙁
The way they 70’sed it is just sublime.
What I find interesting is that I will listen to popular music from the 40s until roughly turn of the century, but have zero interest in US pop music from the last 20 years.
I’m not sure what that says about me getting old or the auto tuned dynamically compressed and to me utterly uninteresting crap that is modern pop music.
Same. I am completely unaware if there is anything at all decent. Everything I’m aware of is absolute garbage.
Tame Impala is interesting. He just played here. Of course he is now finding huge success even though his best work is probably behind him.
I was born in 68, but grew up listening to the previous generation’s music b/c my siblings were 16-20 years older. I had a small record player and boxes of 45’s that I couldn’t read – but at three I knew the disc with the Green Apple was Junior’s Farm (my Dad was called Junior).
Happy music moment for the week – my husband and I spent several hours yesterday at a great used store in Door County, WI and picked-up some great old 45’s for our granddaughter who loves listening to records and is just old enough to “change them” on her little turntable. And yes, Carpenters were in the mix.
I was born in 69 and with several older bros from the early 60s. So we came of age in different decades and while I was well aware of their 70s preferences I was very much a child of the 80s.
Most of the concerts I’m going to now are from bands from the 90s/00s. At most of the shows, there’s a large amount of parents who are bringing their teenagers to the shows.
Neph I call some of that geezer rock.
In this day and age of overwhelming and narrow interests many bands can’t fill live venues.
But a this time it really is the last time wink, wink Stones tour will fill stadiums.
Sensei:
The bands I’m seeing are doing small venues (House of Blues being the largest one), which is about the same size venues they were playing back in the day. Things like Bouncing Souls, Save Ferris, Slackers, and the like).
I still have 4 pieces of IKEA around the house.
I will accept no complaints about the Kallax shelving units. They are the gold standard among board gamers.
Last time I looked at IKEA their delivery charges were bananas. Like $100.
So I generally go with Amazon instead. Free delivery FTW.
Billy or GTFO.
Hemnes or fight me.
Granted they changed them and made them lighter about 15 years ago. And good god I just looked at the pricing on them now.
I know it’s a futile hope, but I dearly want Fauci to face a public reckoning.
Don’t count on it. I posted the other day that Team Red in the House isn’t sure it has the votes for even a futile gesture.
Not with half the country deifying him.
He will face no punishment and neither will any of the criminals and Bond villains that are supposedly being scrutinized in south Florida grand juries right now for all the damage they did trying to tear the country apart over the last decade.
He’s more likely to have a bad car crash than any sort of legal justice.
Why? Does he have some dirt on the Clintons?
How novel. Another ten thousand word thumbsucker about AOC. tl;dr
That’s too bad. I enjoy Matt Taibi’s writing.
It’s actually not a bad article at all.
“A chemistry teacher has been found guilty of indecently assaulting two teenage pupils at an all-boys school in the late 1980s.
Sally-Anne Bowen, who taught at Christ’s College in Finchley, north London, assaulted the teenage boys when they were aged around 14 to 15 and she was in her mid-20s….
In his evidence, the man – who cannot be named for legal reasons – said he kept their relationship secret because he felt compelled to protect the teacher, who he said had drummed it into him that he was not allowed to tell anyone.”

The U.S. military is experiencing a “beyond critical” shortage of advanced missile interceptors in Europe largely driven by President Donald Trump’s war with Iran, a U.S. defense official in Europe and a NATO official told The Associated Press, raising concerns about vulnerabilities in NATO countries to a potential Russian attack.
The U.S. defense official said the most concerning shortfall involves Patriot missile interceptors, which can shoot down Russia’s high-speed ballistic missiles. The NATO official confirmed the low inventories of Patriots among American and NATO forces in Europe. Both spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive military matters.
They have been left defenseless.
Maybe they can shoot windmills at Russia with a giant trebuchet.
No, but Russia and Iran can produce way more cheap drones much faster than the U.S. and Europe can produce Patriots.
Of course all of this was foreseeable.
I think it’s fair to ask why we don’t have a cost effective drone defense when we have had a close look at what’s happening in Ukraine.
No big multi state pork filled extravaganza in their production would be my guess.
Congress and the Pentagon only like big projects.
Rescue us America. We spent our money elsewhere.
The U.S. supplied hundreds of Patriot missiles to Ukraine over the course of the 4 1/2-year-long conflict, but the Iran war was the tipping point for shrinking inventories, said Ed Arnold, senior associate fellow at the Royal United Services Institute, a military think tank in London.
The supply to Ukraine was planned for and reasonably measured, he said, whereas stocks in the Middle East have been unexpectedly and quickly drained, exposing supply chain constraints.
Who does Trump think he is, diverting NATO’s weapons to the ragheads?

Have any of these idiots ever heard or read the speech?
Civil rights leaders and Democratic lawmakers, alongside hundreds of protesters, rallied on the National Mall on Friday to commemorate the 1963 March on Washington, with many speakers emphasizing the importance of November’s midterm elections.
The 2026 “Defend the Vote” March on Washington, organized by the Rev. Al Sharpton’s National Action Network and Martin Luther King III, took place 63 years after the iconic march where Martin Luther King Jr. gave his famous “I Have a Dream” speech.

“We certainly have come a long way in the United States of America, but we still have a long way to go,” Jeffries declared.
“These are challenging times in this country right now. We have a hater in the White House, a reckless and costly war of choice raging in the Middle East, a Supreme Court that’s out of control,” he said, before arguing that Black Americans are particularly hard hit by the Trump administration’s policies.
Jeffries concluded his brief remarks by urging Americans to vote for Democrats in order to take back the House in November so that the nation can “continue our march towards a more perfect union.”
Ocasio-Cortez had a similar message.
Pound that wedge. Pound t in deep. Race isn’t everything, it’s the only thing.
I saw some coverage yesterday. The crowd was small, perhaps because of funding cuts.
“Around the United States, as you’ve probably heard, Gen Z Catholics are heading to the pews in eye-popping numbers. They meet up in pizzerias and follow one another on social media. They flock to Catholic student organizations, which are booming. And at Yale University, where I teach Latin American and global history, they attend classes and public lectures to learn about their faith….
At Yale, I know exactly what that should look like. Courses on Catholic history should engage women’s voices. My students and I read the 12th-century anchorite Julian of Norwich, a saint in the Anglican faith and the first known woman to write a book in the English language. We also read the journalist and activist Dorothy Day, whose blistering critiques of inequality resonate with students nearly a century after her conversion to Catholicism in 1927. Such texts are a reminder that women have long been among the most astute interpreters of religious and social life.”

Reports of the land swap nevertheless faced significant criticism from Democrats.
“This is the most corrupt administration in history,” Sen. Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) said in a written statement to The Hill.
Yup.
Any administration that locks land up is corrupt.
Looking at you Teddy Roosevelt.
Parks advocates also criticized the plan.
“The Trump administration’s attempts to dismantle America’s conservation legacy are now taking aim at Yosemite with this secretive, backroom deal that would turn over Park Service land to a private developer. This is an attack on the American people that own this national park,” Mark Rose, senior Sierra Nevada program manager for the National Parks Conservation Association, said in a written statement.
Land swaps happen all the time. Big fucking deal.
The article very helpfully provides no pertinent details whatsoever. Those evul landsnatchers are probably just trading a few gaudy glass baubles for it. You certainly can’t expect some park service flunky to have any clear notion of what it’s worth.

“Last month, the Journal of the American Medical Association published the results of a study that should concern all of us. Researchers at Columbia University and the University of California, San Diego, analyzed more than a decade of data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s annual survey of health behaviors and found that the proportion of pregnant women who had reported drinking in the previous month rose from 9 percent in 2011 to nearly 15 percent in 2024—a 59 percent increase. Binge drinking rose by three-quarters, and heavy drinking nearly tripled.”

Curious
Women and children… well, you know
In 2019, my family suffered a head-on collision with a wrong-way driver, when he tried to pass a motorcycle up a hill and smashed his Ford F-150 truck head-on into our car. The crash left my husband and son with a few broken bones, while my daughter and I were gravely injured.
Our seatbelts tore through our abdomens and into our internal organs. My head slammed into my airbag with enough force to cause a traumatic brain injury. Why had my son and husband been protected by their seatbelts and airbags while the same safety devices almost killed me and my daughter?
Soon after the car crash, a story from Consumer Reports sent me on a journey to better understand what had happened. I discovered our injuries weren’t random: women are 17 percent more likely to be killed than men, and 73 percent more likely to be seriously injured.
At the time, I worked for a think tank advocating the use of data and design to solve public problems, a practice we called “public interest technology.” I earned a living telling people the government was capable of solving hard problems, so I assumed, given my connections, I could help save women’s lives. Especially because a well-engineered solution already existed.
Why doesn’t the government do something meaningful, like ban automobiles?
Her “solution” wasn’t any change to seatbelts, airbags, etc. It was crash test dummies designed to reflect women better.
So, she didn’t really have a solution to seatbelt or airbag design at all.
Women are more fragile than men.
Duh.
The appeal of the verfict against the two BSU administrators appears to be before the Idaho supreme Court, and there doesn’t appear to be a hearing date as of yet. maybe the Statesman has something more current, but I’m not subscribing to that rag.
The Statist is terrible.
I emailed the chief data officer in the Biden White House after learning about this issue. We had worked together at the same think tank, so I thought she would be shocked to hear about a data problem that was killing women. Unfortunately, that administration was bogged down in a sea of ideological commitments guided by political expediency, pursued at the expense of common sense and public safety.
I tried to explain that if the car industry did not address its longstanding car crash safety bias before the doomed electric vehicle rollout my former co-worker was assigned to, more electric vehicles on the road would mean more female fatalities. Former President Joe Biden lost a wife and young daughter to a car crash. I thought that surely this issue would grab the White House’s attention.
But it did not. My acquaintance was not going to tell Biden to halt his big EV project, even if it meant saving lives. First she would save the environment, then she would get around to women eventually. Sadly, 44,000 women would die over the course of her term.
FEMICIDE!!!!
That would only be true if EVs are more dangerous than IC vehicles. Surely she can’t mean that?
They are heavier.
Ban women from cars. Or make them sign a statement recognizing that they may be more seriously injured in the event of an accident.
It seems so simple even a politician could figure it out.
Auto accidents, women hardest hit!
Then it’s good the forced change to EVs failed.

Today, U.S. road deaths per 10,000 drivers rank just slightly above India. Drivers in Mexico and Sierra Leone are less likely to die on the road than drivers in Ohio. Is it any mystery why this is the case?

She tried to turn the gun on herself afterwards but was subdued by law enforcement before she could do so
Not sure why law enforcement couldn’t have found a piece of belly button lint to examine for 20-30 seconds to give her the time to take the trash out herself.
Her pic fits the stereotype in my head of a Wyoming woman.
She plead guilty to first degree murder, so it’s not like the plea deal was for a lesser charge. There’s no mention of a sentence being agreed to, either. Presumably, she did so because they agree to take the death penalty off the table. But she tried to kill herself, so why would she even ask for that?
“X has exposed a 200,000-account bot farm on the platform being controlled by suspected Chinese actors with some of them directing ire at data center and energy policy in the United States….
“These posts contained claims that AI data centers are driving up household electricity prices and straining the grid. Others included AI-generated cartoons that depicted data-center operators enriching themselves at the public’s expense. We remain committed to maintaining an open and authentic platform where people debate topics of public interest. We take seriously any attempts to undermine the integrity of the global town square and suspend accounts that violate our Authenticity policy,” the post added.”

I’d be surprised if that wasn’t happened all across the internet.
I’ve called out those accounts. It was like “no shit” after seeing they were from South Asia.
Serious question
How does an AI data center make money?
Expensive to build and maintain, would almost sound like a government project
The data center itself is paid by the AI companies. They generally don’t own or build their own infrastructure.
Think about a company that gets an exclusive 20 year real estate lease on an office building, but the landlord is a distinct business. It’s responsible for the property itself.
But how do the AI companies make money?
That’s an entirely different question!
They offer free versions and paid versions to companies. The revenue from paid versions and the sale and use of data scraped from from the free versions do not offset the costs currently. But the supposedly it will in the future. That’s current bet.
There will indeed be a demand for it, but it will be curious what happens when it’s priced appropriately how much will be consumed and who the remaining players will be.
Data centers don’t necessarily supply just AI companies. Everything that’s cloud based runs or is stored in a data center.

Actually pretty smart to leverage speech content for trading purposes. I like potential employees who can think outside of the box.
Pretty dumb getting caught.
Brain drain
Canada is hiring dozens of researchers from US universities, including top research institutions such as Harvard, as its relationship with its neighbour continues to sour.
More than three-quarters of the 64 professors who are moving to Canada from around the world will come from the US. They will receive funding from a pool of C$504m ($362m; £268m) for research in fields such as climate change and medicine under a new government programme.

One climate researcher told the BBC that he was relocating to Canada in part because his work in the US had become more difficult in recent years.
Seth Guikema, a climate resiliency researcher at the University of Michigan and one of the 48 US researchers relocating to Canada, said he had decided to approach Canadian institutions last year in search of opportunities.
“The funding environment in the US for anything related to climate and resilience has become challenging,” Guikema said. “I was looking for a good intellectual home where I could have practical impact.”
Muh phony baloney job!
They’re taking our woke professors?
Can we send them more?
I would support a one-time payment of $5,000 to cover moving expense for wokies who want to go to Canada. Take my tax money for that.
I know I’m just a dumb chick, but isn’t 48 exactly three-quarters of 64? 🤔
None of them were math professors?
I might shed a tear if I was an underwater basket weaving enthusiast who enjoys long papers on intersectional climate change.
But I am not. Haha! Good riddance!
Lynn Pasquerella, the president of the American Association of Colleges and Universities, said institutions felt “helpless” in the face of federal and state cuts.
The deeper concern, she added, was “not the short-term brain drain” but “the possibility that the US could become less attractive as a place to pursue knowledge”.
You can’t very well expect them to fund their own activities. That’s nuts.
Just declare war on the Union and get it over with
“Trump is threatening California’s coast in pursuit of reckless offshore oil and gas extraction to pad the wallets of his corrupt oil cronies,” Newsom said in a statement earlier this month. AB 1448, the new bill by Assemblymember Gregg Hart, would prohibit the use of existing oil and gas infrastructure located in California coastal territory from being used to support federal offshore oil leases issued after Jan. 1, 2026.
This matters because the federal government has the power to lease ocean territory to fossil fuel companies, which can then build offshore platforms and drill for oil and gas. Since state control extends three miles off the California coast, the new bill would make it effectively impossible to transport oil from a newly leased federal territory to shore via a pipeline (state law already prohibits adding new oil and gas infrastructure in California waters that could enable offshore drilling in federal waters).
These are, of course, the very people screeching about more federal handouts and “disaster relief”.
